Team management 9

Human interactions at work are changing all the time. The introduction and adoption of new technology has resulted in tremendous disruption of all aspects of our society especially in the workplace.  Events such as natural disasters and political upheaval are also a source of disruption. The events of the Covid-19 pandemic and related economic impact are prime examples of these changes.

It is important for managers and leaders to keep abreast of current events, the real and potential disruptors of tomorrow. This assignment is intended to help the student engage actively with a wide variety of information sources and bring focus of the topics covered in class to bear on real world events.

Please submit 1 article per week from a legitimate news outlet, industry periodical, academic journal or other source that explores the topics of managing people and technology as a current event. Prepare a short synopsis of the article and discuss your interpretation of the events, conflicts, subjects or ideas described.

The topic is very wide.  I expect a concise summary of the pertinent details and your analysis, opinion or interpretation of the article.

Your review should be about 600 words long, approximately the length of this description.

Please include the article with your submission.

Government Intervention

Purpose of Assignment

The theory of market economies emphasizes  freedom of choice and limited government intervention. The classic  argument for government intervention is market failure – the inability  of the market economy to correct itself from a dysfunctional state (such  as the Great Depression). Students will examine articles from the  University library to analyze real-world examples of U.S. government  intervention programs and apply current week readings to make  intelligent conclusions about the economic policies.

Assignment Steps

Resources: Tutorial help on Excel® and Word functions can be found on the Microsoft® Office website. There are also additional tutorials via the web offering support for Office products.

Using the University Library, EBSCOhost, or ProQuest data bases,  locate up to three different articles/publications and/or use The  Economist Online from the University Library to examine one case of  significant government intervention as it relates to your current  industry of employment or an industry in which you are interested in  working. You may access EBSCOhost, ProQuest or The Economist Online  through the University Library homepage:

  1. Click on the Library tab.
  2. Click on University Library.
  3. Click on the tab to Databases A-Z.
  4. Click on “E”.
  5. Scroll down to Economist.com.

Examples of intervention programs you may select, but are not limited to:

  • US agriculture support programs
  • Low income support programs (Food Stamps, Earned Income Tax Credit,  Child Tax Credit, and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families)
  • Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program, The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)
  • Low-income rent controls and housing vouchers
  • Government promotion of renewable energy sources to discourage use of fossil fuels such as coal and oil
  • Unemployment Insurance
  • Bailout of U.S. banks and other financial institutions during the Great Recession
  • Bailout of U.S. auto makers during the Great Recession
  • Social Security retirement benefits

Develop a minimum 10-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation including detailed speaker notes or voiceover including the following:

  • Describe the intervention and detail its history.
  • Analyze the arguments for government intervention as opposed to arguments for market-based solutions. Hint: See the information in our course textbook on market failures.
  • Examine who may be helped and who may be hurt by the selected government intervention.
  • Examine externalities and/or unintended consequences of such intervention.
  • Determine the cost trend of the intervention program since its  implementation including whether costs are increasing, decreasing, or  vary with the state of the economy.
  • Evaluate the success or failure of the intervention in achieving its objectives and develop conclusions.
  • Recommend whether the program should be continued as is, discontinued, or modified and defend your recommendation.

Note: The use of tables and/or  charts to display economic data over the time period discussed is highly  encouraged. However, if your source includes the copyright symbol,  which looks like this: ©, then you should not copy any table and/or  charts from that source. You could use, but are not required to use,  charts/graphs retrieved from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis FRED  web site as long as the data sources used by FRED to create those charts  are government sources such as the Bureau of Economic Analysis or the  Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Cite a minimum of three scholarly, peer-reviewed references.

Ethics and Sustainability

“Ethical Aspects of Sustainability” by Bruce Jennings, he defines our moral responsibility to natural resources and the climate crisis in this way, “A sustainable society lives within the carrying capacity of its natural and social system. It has a system of rules and incentives that promote replenishing and limit depletion and pollution. A sustainable society builds upon the commitment of its members to conform to these rules voluntarily, and it enforces them when necessary”.

1.  In your own words, explain what he means by  “the carrying capacity of its natural and social system”? What is the implied relationship between the planet, society, and our natural resources, according to Jennings? Then, can you point out other authors whom we have read in this course who echo this sentiment or idea regarding natural resources? Who are they and what are the common ideas?

2. Jennings describes three kinds of philosophical orientations. I like to call them points of view –  that occur when engaging in ethical or moral debates, such as those that exist around and within the moral responsibility discourse of sustainability. How we respond to our responsibilities, then have everything do to with the way we frame or view our relationship to me ( what directly concerns me, and the not-me, those things that are indirectly related to me). Please define all 3 of them as he defines them in his post. Then, consider which frame or lens is the best one, the one most necessary for sustainability discussions and outlooks? In contrast, which one is the most detrimental to conversations regarding sustainability and responsibility?

Essay #3

For this paper, you can choose between two topics:

1.  How can educational television shows about science receive more funding and airtime?

2.  How can small businesses be supported to prevent them from being destroyed by huge chains?

For this essay:

Your introduction should provide background information and important details the reader should know before you move onto other parts.  The introduction has to catch the reader’s attention:  make him/her want to read the paper.  Remember that a good introduction includes a thesis statement.

Briefly state your proposal – the idea that you want the reader to accept.

Discuss your plan of action – explain how you plan to achieve the proposal.  How will your reader know your proposal is valid?  This is the section where you have to convince the reader to agree with your ideas.

In the Conclusion, summarize the key points and include a call-to-action.  Do not include any new information in the Conclusion.

You will need to do research for this essay.

Criteria:

MLA format

5 pages

Works Cited page with 3-4 academic sources.

For this essay, you will need outside sources.  If you have completed the SPLAT tutorial, you will know which are considered academic sources.

You will also need a Works Cited page.

Entries are in alpha order according to the author’s last name.  If there is no author name, use the first word of the title for your alpha listing.

Note:  The first line of the entry is at the margin.  The second and subsequent lines are indented.

A Works Cited page is important.  It shows the reader where to find full information about something you have already mentioned in an in-text citation.

These formats are important for academic work.  You will lose extra points if your in-text citations and/or Works Cited references are not done correctly.

Week8 ethics discussion

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 13
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)

Introduction
Some people believe that you can tell who a person is by what they do when no one is looking. Let’s look at the following case. John Doe, a nurse, has downloaded an application to her phone that allows him to download copyrighted textbooks for a nursing course (that Doe is going to take) without his Internet Service Provider knowing it. The application is called “Cloak” as in cloak of invisibility (a hooded coat one wears to make it so others cannot see you). The application disguises his phone and makes it so the information on it is inaccessible. John is aware that other people who are of a lower socio-economic status (like him) also use this software program for the same reason (and to save money). John Doe knows that his religion forbids him from using this application to download in this manner. John Doe is focused on his own economic situation and does not consider the publisher, author, and others involved in the books. Think about a course of social action; what social values should be used to address this moral issue and conflict.

  • Initial Post Instructions
Create a personal ethical philosophy and explain from which philosophy or philosophies (it must include at least one of the following: virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, or social contract ethics) you created it and why the contents are important and meaningful for you. List its precepts.
  • Take your personal ethical philosophy statement and use it to work through John Doe’s case. What is moral and immoral per your theory?
  • How would the veil of ignorance or a different theory of justice address John Doe’s case?

Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least one peer. When possible, respond to a peer who chose a different ethical theory than you did in your posting. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.

Writing Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up)
  • Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside scholarly source)
  • APA format for in-text citations and list of references

Answers1:

Hello Professor and Class,

My personal philosophy is that I always make sure people are happy and put people before myself because in the long run when I am in need of help, they will remember the time I helped them and gave them happiness. “Kantian ethics provide a human-centric ethical framework placing human existence and capacity at the centre of a norm-creating philosophy that guides our understanding of moral conduct” (Ulgen, 2017). I believe Kantians ethics follows this philosophy I have because it is the moral thing to do in my mind to put people first and make sure happiness is covered all around. Helping and ensuring a person is a way of making that person the center and making sure they know they are existing.

John Doe in my personal philosophy wouldn’t work out. Knowing it is against his religion, he went ahead and downloaded the app because he cant afford the books by himself. He cared more about himself and passing his classes than his religion and that I believe is morally right. The morally wrong thing to do is knowing other low income people have it and it works, then not downloading the help that he needs and failing his classes. Although downloading an app that disguises a phone is wrong, it’ll help John Doe in the long run.

“The political philosopher John Rawls is well known for his thought experiment of the “veil of ignorance.” The thought experiment goes something like this: when designing rules for your society, you should be ignorant of what social position you yourself will occupy” (Gobry, 2015). This addressed John Doe’s case by doing what is best for himself. He knows he is low income and needs these books to be able to get through the classes but cant afford them. He knows other people have the same app and it works well for them. John Doe knows he needs this to succeed so he got the app so he won;t fail.

analyzing and visualizing data midterm

Review the attached file. Suzie has an issue. She can either move to NY or FL and needs to review some data that her agent gave her. The agent reviewed house prices and crime ratings for houses that Suzie would be interested in based on her selection criteria.  She wants to live in an area with lower crime but wants to know a few things:

  1. Is it more expensive or less expensive to live in FL or NY?
  2. Is the crime rate higher in FL or NY (Note a low score in crime means lower crime)?
  3. Is the crime rate higher in lower or higher house price areas?

Using the R tool, show the data in the tool to answer each of the questions.  Also, show the data visualization to go along with the summary.

  1. If you were Suzie, where would you move based on the questions above?
  2. After you gave Suzie the answer above (to #4), she gave you some additional information that you need to consider:
    1. She has $100,000 to put down for the house.
    2. If she moves to NY she will have a job earning $120,000 per year.
    3. If she moves to FL she will have a job earning $75,000 per year.
    4. She wants to know the following:
      1. On average what location will she be able to pay off her house first based on average housing prices and income she will receive?
      2. Where should she move and why?  Please show graphics and thoroughly explain your answer here based on the new information provided above.

Note: The screenshots should be copied and pasted and must be legible.  Only upload the word document.  Be sure to answer all of the questions above and number the answers.  Be sure to also explain the rational for each answer and also ensure that there are visuals for each question above. Use two peer reviewed articles to support your position.

Incarceration of Juveniles

  1. Alternatives to Incarceration
    Overview
A recent study illustrates that nearly two million juveniles are processed through juvenile courts across the United States each year. Depending on the nature of the crime, juveniles may face detention or incarceration if they are convicted. Given the fact that many courts are reluctant to incarcerate criminal offenders, judges often consider alternatives to incarceration. The driving force behind these alternatives is to save taxpayer money yet still demand offender accountability and impose sanctions for criminal behavior.
In this assignment, you will examine alternatives to incarceration for juveniles.
    Preparation
Use the Internet or the Strayer University databases to research the use of sanctions other than incarceration or detention for juvenile offenders.
    Instructions
Write a 2–3 page paper in which you:

    • Examine the underlying historical and economic reasons behind the quest for alternatives to committing juveniles to detention centers.
    • Describe three alternatives to incarceration that juvenile courts currently use. Provide examples of such alternatives in practice to support the response.
    • Discuss the significant societal and individual benefits of imposing sanctions or punishments that do not involve removing an offender from his or her family or community.
    • Use at least three quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.
    • This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions
The specific learning outcome associated with this assignment is:
    • Examine alternatives to incarceration for juveniles.
