Assignment two

Yes, these instructions are long. Read them c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y before starting! Ask me about any questions before you start! But skim at your own risk- you could lose significant points for missing some part of this assignment.

For this assignment, we are going to look at one of the most common types of research methods: the survey/questionnaire. We are going to loosely model the research process as described in your book so far using this type of study. There are a few components to this assignment, so please make sure each is under its own distinct subheading within the body of your paper (i.e. Step 1, Step 2, etc.). As usual, make sure your entire paper is in APA format and is a minimum of 2 pages (that means two full pages), but no longer than 4 pages. This assignment has a lot of moving parts. Papers that go above and beyond by being well written, organized, thought out, and show mastery of the topic area will be eligible for extra credit.

Step 1: Identify a topic in the healthcare field that interests you (this can be broad at this point, like “Medicare,” “mental disorders,” “elderly care,” etc.)

Step 2: Find 4 peer-reviewed journal articlespublished between 2007 and 2020 that are closely related to your topic. It will help you with the rest of the assignment if these studies are also based on surveys- play with different key words in the journal databases to focus on these types of studies . Briefly summarize (in your own words) what these articles tell you about your topic in a few paragraphs (I don’t need every detail of the papers. Just convey what is relevant). Make sure they are cited in APA format on the References page at the end of your paper.

Step 3: Based on what you learned from the articles above and what you still want to know about your topic, brainstorm 3-4 potential specific research questions (these are not the same as survey questions) about your topic- include each of your brainstorms in the paper (i.e. if you pick elderly care, one potential question could be, “Does regular family visitation decrease risk of depression in elderly individuals aged 70-90 who are living in long-term care facilities?” but not something too vague or subjective, like “Is elderly care in Florida good or bad?”). Remember, study questions should be specific, measurable, and realistic.

Step 4: Pick one of your brainstormed questions that would be best suited for a survey/questionnaire methodology. If your question requires you to collect biomedical data or use secondary data, or in any other way does not depend on participant attitudes/behaviors, it is not suited for a survey- your book has a lot of good information about this. For example, a question like “Does daily intake of a fish oil supplement increase HDL levels in post-menopausal women?” would not be appropriate. To answer this type of question, you would need to measure HDL levels, which obviously cannot be done as a survey.

Step 5: Develop a 5-10 question survey that could be a part of a study that addresses the research question. To make this easier, we are going to standardize the question responses to fit a Likert scale. Click here to see examples of Likert scale type responses. Identify ONE type of scale from the link that you will use in your survey (i.e. each question would have the same potential answers- clearly identify which of the scales on the linked page you would use for your survey– you are picking only one that will work for all of your questions, so make sure you write your questions in such a way that each could be answered be one single scale). You only need to write out the scale ONCE so I know what you picked- not once for each question.

This assignment is about the development of the research process. I want you to think through what it takes to take an idea from inception to development, even if it isn’t perfect. Just do your best to fulfill the assignment criteria- we aren’t aiming for the Nobel Prize here, we are just trying to apply what we’ve learned in the book to a real-world problem.

https://www.extension.iastate.edu/Documents/ANR/LikertScaleExamplesforSurveys.pdf

Step 6 : pick your study question, or write/edit your survey questions. This is the skill set we are working to develop in this assignment, so there are no short cuts. There are TONS of examples of surveys online, so feel free to browse them for inspiration, but do not copy and paste questions. Remember, this assignment will be run through turnitin.com to check for plagiarism.

Good luck!

Final Project Part 3

Final Project, Part 3: Paper.

This part of the final project is the paper that presents your description and analysis of your selected works.

In a 750-1200 word essay:

  • Explain the subject you chose and why it’s worth exploring in the Humanities
  • Describe each of your selected examples, including 1) information about its creator; 2) its historical or cultural context (how it fits into a historical period’s or a specific culture’s attitudes, events etc. Think about what else was going on in the culture and history when the piece was created); and 3) link to the example or an embedded image with a citation in the paper where you write about each example.
  • Use at least one specific interpretative tool, concept or method from the course to explain each of your selected examples. You should use a different tool, concept or method for each example, so you should use at least three different tools in your paper.
  • Assess the effectiveness or impact of each representation. In other words, how well did the representation present the subject? How effective was it? What impact did this representation have? What specific elements of the representation lead you to your conclusions?
  • Provide a correctly formatted paper, complete and proper citations for any references you consult, using MLA format

Documentation Style: The paper is to be formatted and documented in the MLA format. For general assistance, see the links below to the UMGC  Library.

STOP: Before you hand in your assignment, make sure to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Have I included a paragraph that provides one to two logical, concrete, well-stated reasons that this subject is worth exploring within the Humanities?
  2. Have I included least two to three sentences for each example that clearly and concretely provide information about its creator, cultural/historical context, and where I found it-an image or link?
  3. Have I included at least one to three sentences that explains and applies a specific interpretative tool, concept or method that is from the course’s Learning Resources each example?
  4. Have I included at least one to three sentences that contains an assessment of the effectiveness of each example in representing the chosen subject?
  5. Have I provided a list of resources and do all of my citations conform to MLA 8th edition guidelines?
  6. Have I proofread this assignment for grammatical, structural, and spelling errors?

concept you wish to measure answer

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in American women. Since 1984, the annual cardiovascular disease mortality rate has remained greater for women than men (Mehta et al., 2016). Regardless of age, within a year of a first acute myocardial infarction (MI), more women than men will die and within 5 years of a first acute myocardial infarction, more women than men will die, have heart failure, or suffer from a stroke (Mehta et al., 2016). Female patients had worse outcomes, higher rates of cardiac shock, heart failure, and in-hospital mortality was higher in women (Luo et al., 2020). The female patients also had higher rate of diabetes, and preferred to take conservative treatment (Luo et al., 2020). Why are the mortality rates higher in women than in men after an acute myocardial infarction?

Direct measurement is measurement of data that can be objective, specific, and straightforward in research (Gray & Grove, 2020). Measuring mortality in this study would be considered a direct measurement. A questionnaire to help develop trends and accurate data would be helpful during the analysis of patient’s charts with an acute myocardial infarction causing death.

  1. What was the patient’s sex? male or female?
  2. What was the patient’s age?
  3. Did the patient have diabetes or hypertension?
  4. Did the patient have a prior MI?
  5. Was mortality within the first year of the MI?

Discussion 3.1

Strategies for Individual, Couple, and Family Crisis Intervention

Human services professionals often find themselves enmeshed in the most personal and intimate details of their clients’ lives, perhaps even only a few minutes after meeting them. Such is the nature of individual, couple, and family crisis intervention. As a result, human services professionals must be especially attuned to the nuances of different types of individual, couple, and family crises in order to handle these situations with sensitivity, compassion, and composure. Moreover, human services professionals must enter these situations prepared to use whichever strategies seem most appropriate and necessary in order to secure the safety and well-being of their clients. The selection of these strategies is dictated by the type and nature of the crisis at hand. An individual who seeks help from a human services professional as a result of suicide ideation for example, has far different needs than a woman who has recently left an abusive relationship. Similarly, the intervention strategies used to help a sexual assault survivor will vary considerably from those used to assist a grieving child.

As suggested by this week’s Learning Resources, a comprehensive body of empirical research exists about which intervention strategies are best suited for particular types of individual, couple, and family crisis interventions. Human services professionals carry knowledge of this collective body of strategies into every situation they encounter. Determining the most appropriate strategy to use during an individual, couple, or family crisis intervention is an ongoing process for human services professionals. If one strategy does not work, they must be prepared to try a different approach. Thus, it is essential that human services professionals possess an expansive knowledge of crisis intervention strategies for all types of individual, couple, and family crises in order to optimize their abilities to provide effective care for their clients.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapters 8, 9, and 10 in your course text, Crisis Intervention Strategies. As you read, focus on specific crisis intervention strategies that might be used with individuals, couples, and/or families dealing with crises of lethality, sexual assault, and/or partner violence.
  • Review the articles, “Optimistic Explanatory Style as a Moderator of the Association Between Negative Life Events and Suicide Ideation” and “Best Practices for Working With Rape Crisis Centers to Address Elder Sexual Abuse.” Focus on how the implications of the findings discussed in each article, especially specific crisis intervention strategies, may be applied when handling cases involving individual, couple, and/or family crisis situations.
  • Select two of the three types of individual, couple, and family crisis situations you have examined in-depth this week: crisis of lethality, sexual assault, and/or partner violence. Reflect on which intervention strategies might be best suited for situations stemming from these two types of crises, and why.

With these thoughts in mind:
Do a brief description of each of the two individual, couple, and/or family crisis situations you selected. Then explain what intervention strategies you might apply to each situation and why. Use specific examples to illustrate your points.

Jurisdiction/Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read The Burden of Reasonable Doubt: When a Standard Designed to Protect Defendants Actually Hurts Them (Links to an external site.) and Federal and State Jurisdiction (Links to an external site.) Additionally, watch What Does Beyond a Reasonable Doubt Mean? (Links to an external site.)

A central component to any criminal case is the jurisdictional requirement for a court to hear a criminal case. In your examinations this week, focus on the power of jurisdiction and its significance as part of the criminal justice system. Who creates jurisdiction, and why is it so significant? Similarly, a sound understanding of the legal requirement that the prosecution must prove every element of a statute beyond a reasonable doubt is required for all criminal justice professionals. This discussion requires you to examine reasonable doubt instructions for juries from three states and choose which one is best; remember to justify your responses with reliable sources.

  • What is the legal concept of the prosecutor’s burden of proving all elements of a criminal offense beyond a reasonable doubt (BARD)?
    • Where did the burden of BARD come from, historically?
    • Compare and contrast the beyond a reasonable doubt jury instructions from these three different states: Nevada, New York, and Louisiana; pick the one that best explains this legal concept and justify your answer in your primary discussion posting.

Not Just the Beatles

Overview

You are the lead singer and manager of a new and quickly rising band. Everyone—from record companies, movie producers, video game producers, magazine editors, and the like—is approaching you. As described in Chapter 26 of the text, you do not want to make the same mistakes Brian Epstein, the manager of the Beatles, made when the band made their first movie, easily losing the Beatles millions in lost revenue. You have been asked to now take your band to support the troops in a number of war zones. You do not want to engender negative press coverage and agree to a contract with the U.S.O. and Armed Forces Radio.

Instructions

Write a 6–8 page paper in which you:

  • Discuss the steps that would have helped a negotiator or manager like Brian Epstein to prevent media and entertainment industries from taking advantage of the negotiator’s lack of experience with these industries.
  • Indicate the basic skills that you believe you need to effectively negotiate with those individuals mentioned in the scenario. Justify your response.
  • Compare and contrast at least two different negotiation approaches that you would use when negotiating with the individuals mentioned in the scenario. Provide a rationale for your response.
  • Outline a plan for your contract negotiation in which you specify at least two different strategies that you can utilize, as needed, during the negotiation process.
  • Stress the fundamental reasons why it is important for you, as a negotiator, to set the terms of the contract for your band, as opposed to allowing the opposing negotiation team to set those terms. Present two reasons why you would not want to allow industry members to write the contract. Justify your response.
  • Use at least three quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as quality resources.

This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of negotiation skills, strategies, and approaches for a given scenario.

Revisions for Assignment

Alternatives to Incarceration

Overview

A recent study illustrates that nearly two million juveniles are processed through juvenile courts across the United States each year. Depending on the nature of the crime, juveniles may face detention or incarceration if they are convicted. Given the fact that many courts are reluctant to incarcerate criminal offenders, judges often consider alternatives to incarceration. The driving force behind these alternatives is to save taxpayer money yet still demand offender accountability and impose sanctions for criminal behavior.

In this assignment, you will examine alternatives to incarceration for juveniles.

Preparation

Use the Internet or the Strayer University databases to research the use of sanctions other than incarceration or detention for juvenile offenders.

Instructions

Write a 2–3 page paper in which you:

  • Examine the underlying historical and economic reasons behind the quest for alternatives to committing juveniles to detention centers.
  • Describe three alternatives to incarceration that juvenile courts currently use. Provide examples of such alternatives in practice to support the response.

Discuss the significant societal and individual benefits of imposing sanctions or punishments that do not involve removing an offender from his or her family or community.

  • Use at least three quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions

The specific learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

  • Examine alternatives to incarceration for juveniles.

Intermediate Macroeconomics

Case Study 2 : China / US Trade war

In the last few years of his presidency, Donald Trump announcedPDF ever-escalatingPDF import tariffsPDF against Chinese made goods, in an effort to boost US production, and lower the trade balance.  (Note: because the NY Times needs an account / subscription, PDF versions of the articles are also linked)

According to this site, the tariffs (see total tab) have impacted nearly 400,000 jobs, causing unemployment to rise, and thus long run GDP to fall.

Further, look at the numbers for the US trade deficit between May 2018 (the start of the tariffs) and January 2020 (when the Phase One deal was signed)

The trade war brought on by Trump’s protectionist policy has left many wondering have the tariffs made America great again?

1. What models / Chapters are used in this case study?

2. Use labour market statistics to determine if the fall in GDP projected by taxfoundation.org is reasonable

3. Did the tariffs have the expected impact on the trade balance?

4. Given the revenue generated from US tariffs, will it be possible to offset the economic loss in the long-run? Will resulting revenues have an impact on the federal budget?

5. Consider the USD/CNY exchange rate. Use this information to reconcile your expectations of the model.

6. What assumptions made in the model we studied are valid in this case? What assumptions are invalid?

7. Look at what has happened to China’s growth rate over the last few years. Considering the retaliatory tariffs imposed by China, are the results consistent with the model?

Suicide Assessment

Effective suicide prevention counseling can literally save a life. With timely interventions, treatment and support, suicides and suicide attempts can be prevented. In crisis counseling, how you encounter the suicidal client may differ from the traditional face-to-face interactions we typically consider for long-term care. Some suicidal clients reach out with a phone call or online messaging. Other times we are given a written case referral and asked to consult for immediate safety planning. Since we encounter suicidal clients in a variety of platforms, this discussion is designated to help you not only perfect your skills in determining how to assess and intervene with a suicidal client, but also to consider the impact of how the client information is presented on our decision making regarding best client care.

In this Discussion, you will be assigned a particular case presentation to review. Students with the last name A–I will watch the video recording as if working with a face-to-face or online client. Students with the last name J–R will review the transcript as if given a written referral. Students with the last name S–Z will listen to the audio recording as if speaking to a client by phone. Based on your assigned format, you will assess for risk factors and begin safety planning for your client.

To Prepare:

  • Download the transcript and review the video Facilitative Response Activity. You can download the transcript for future reference with clients.
  • Review the video How to accurately assess and help a client by Dr. Sue Banks and Dr. Michelle Slater.
  • Based on your last name, review the case presentation for Robert in the Suicide assessment and safety planning link using the format assigned.

Note: When the media resource is accessed and appears, please make certain that you choose the format that coincides with the group you are assigned. Students with the last name A–I will watch the video recording. Students with the last name J–R will use the written transcript. Students with the last name S–Z will listen to the audio recording.

By Day 3

Post your responses to the following:

  • The type of interaction you reviewed of Robert (i.e., written, video, or audio)
  • Risk factors for Robert
  • Things you would like to know about Robert (i.e., what information is missing?)
  • Components you think will be important to include in a safety plan for Robert
