Module 3 Assignment 2: LASA – Project Planning – Developing the Project Plan and Determining Critical Path – AU MGT 402

Assignment 2: LASA – Project Planning – Developing the Project Plan and Determining Critical Path

  1. Using the District4WarehouseMove WBS.xls provided, create a project plan for the District 4 Warehouse Move project. Use the PDF document, Project Plan Check – District4Move, to check your work to be sure you have created your starting project plan correctly. ProjectLibre is required for this task. If you have not yet downloaded ProjectLibre, please click here and follow the directions to do so now. (This is the Project Libre download link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/projectlibre/)

Note: you will need to insert a column to include your WBS codes, then you will need to sequence the tasks to show tasks by work package.

  2. Based upon the details in the WBS and the project case, determine which tasks need to be completed first and which tasks are dependent upon other tasks to be completed prior to starting. Using this information identify predecessors in your project plan’s predecessor column. Complete the predecessor column by entering the line number of tasks that must be completed in order for each task to start. This will create your project timeline.
  3. Using ProjectLibre’s Network or flow diagram view, determine the critical path for this project. In a MS Word document, list the activities that are on the critical path. Considering the risks identified in the risk table below, identify which risks would be most likely to increase your project timeline. Justify your responses.
  4. Submit both your completed project plan and your MS Word document.

What is the message the media is trying to convey?

The advertisement that I found was a advertisement pertain to female gender stereotyping in the 1950’s. The particular advertisement that I found was of a female holding a ketchup bottle. The advertisement is trying to convey the message that women can now open this new bottle cap because the older caps were to tight for them. The message is basically portraying that women of the 1950’s were not very strong.

What examples are used to convey this message?

The advertisement is stereotyping females to be weak and not strong enough to open the bottle cap. The advertisement uses a hard working mom and a tight bottle cap, the advertisement tries to show that females are weak and need someone else to open their bottles, but not anymore. The bottle cap is suppose to represent their barrier from being strong.

Does the message fit a gender-role stereotype? Why?

The message does fit a gender-role stereotype because during the 1950’s women were perceived to be weak and men are to be stronger. Even though the women works in the kitchen, the men were designed to to the heavy lifting and opening bottles. It basically is attacking the female and basically is showing the ketchup company had to redesign the bottle because females could not get bottle off before.

Is the gender message consistent with your beliefs about gender?

This gender message is not consistent with my beliefs about a gender. The times have changed and the female does as much as a male or even more. The media has also changed the views of a female and made them the same status of males. Thank goodness we live in a country where females are a equal to men, I know times were different in the past.

I watched an Allstate commercial on YouTube called AllState Safe Driving Bonus Check and in it there is a man and a woman sitting at a table in a restaurant and she is showing him her safe driving bonus check talking about how he said men were more superior drivers than women, but she was the one with the check.  The actual check she is holding is an example of how she proved that not men are superior drivers to women.  There is a lot of misconception that women are horrible drivers and as the woman stated in the commercial the man has previously said that men were more superior drivers.  So, the commercial does include a gender role stereotype.  I personally do think men are better drivers than women because women are more likely to get into accidents because they multitask more in the car.  And before I discussed this with my girlfriend and she did agree with me.  After we talked about it, we came to the conclusion that men were more focused drivers than women.  This week alone I saw women putting on makeup, texting, talking with their cell phone up to their ear, eating, all while driving.  I am not trying to sound sexist and I am far from it, my girlfriend had even agreed with me when we talked about this but those were the observations that I had made.  I did some research and it was said that men were more likely to get ticketed for reckless driving or drunk driving and women were more law abiding (Edgerton, 2011).

From Justice Robert A. Jackson, Dissent in Korematsu v. United States (1944)

Korematsu was born on our soil, of parents born in Japan. The Constitution makes him a citizen of the United States by nativity, and a citizen of California by residence. No claim is made that he is not loyal to this country….

Now, if any fundamental assumption underlies our system, it is that guilt is personal and not inheritable. Even if all of one’s antecedents had been convicted of treason, the Constitution forbids its penalties to be visited upon him… But here is an attempt to make an otherwise innocent act a crime merely because this prisoner is the son of parents as to whom he had no choice, and belongs to a race from which there is no way to resign…

In the very nature of things, military decisions are not susceptible of intelligent judicial appraisal… Courts can never have any real alternative to accepting the mere declaration of the authority that issued the order that it was reasonably necessary from a military viewpoint.

Much is said of the danger to liberty from the Army program for deporting and detaining these citizens of Japanese extraction. But a judicial construction of the due process clause that will sustain this order is a far more subtle blow to liberty than the promulgation of the order itself. A military order, however unconstitutional, is not apt to last longer than the military emergency. Even during that period, a succeeding commander may revoke it all. But once a judicial opinion rationalizes such an order to show that it conforms to the Constitution, or rather rationalizes the Constitution to show that the Constitution sanctions such an order, the Court for all time has validated the principle of racial discrimination in criminal procedure and of transplanting American citizens. The principle then lies about like a loaded weapon, ready for the hand of any authority that can bring forward a plausible claim of an urgent need.

Analyze and interpret Document 1. Why does Justice Jackson believe that even though military authorities have the power to violate constitutional protections in time of war, the courts should not approve their actions? Who is his intended audience? What does he mean by comparing the Court’s decision to “a loaded weapon”?

Remember to consider who the author is, the context (time and place), and the intended audience. Identify the author’s argument and the significance of the document.

From Margaret Chase Smith, Speech in the Senate (1950)

The United States Senate has long enjoyed worldwide respect as the greatest deliberative body in the world. But recently that deliberative character has too often been debased to the level of a forum of hate and character assassination sheltered by the shield of congressional immunity…

I think that it is high time for the United States Senate and its members to do some soul searching— for us to weigh our consciences—on the manner in which we are performing our duty to the people of America—on the manner in which we are using or abusing our individual powers and privileges… I think that it is high time that we remembered; that the Constitution, as amended, speaks not only of the freedom of speech but also of trial by jury instead of trial by accusation.

Those of us who shout the loudest about Americanism in making character assassinations are all too frequently those who, by our own words and acts, ignore some of the basic principles of Americanism—

The right to criticize; The right to hold unpopular beliefs; The right to protest; The right of independent thought.

The exercise of these rights should not cost one single American citizen his reputation or his right to a livelihood nor should he be in danger of losing his reputation or livelihood merely because he happens to know someone who holds unpopular beliefs. Who of us doesn’t? Otherwise none of us could call our souls our own. Otherwise thought control would have set in.

The American people are sick and tired of being afraid to speak their minds lest they be politically smeared as “Communists” or “Fascists” by their opponents. Freedom of speech is not what it used to be in America. It has been so abused by some that it is not exercised by others. The American people are sick and tired of seeing innocent people smeared and guilty people whitewashed.

The nation sorely needs a Republican victory. But I don’t want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the Four Horsemen of Calumny—Fear, Ignorance, Bigotry and Smear…

As a United States Senator, I am not proud of the way in which the Senate has been made a publicity platform for irresponsible sensationalism… I don’t like the way the Senate has been made a rendezvous for vilification, for selfish political gain at the sacrifice of individual reputations and national unity.

Analyze and interpret Document 2. What does Smith believe is the essence of freedom of speech? Who is the intended audience? What is the intention/purpose behind this speech? What does this document suggest about how the Cold War affected discussions of freedom in the early 1950s?

Remember to consider who the author is, the context (time and place), and the intended audience. Identify the author’s argument and the significance of the document.

Final Paper:
Find an ethical problem or issue in a profession in which you are interested or that you expect to enter yourself.

Part 1
Present a summary explanation and/or analysis of the ethical problem(s) or issue(s), presenting the various sides of the conflict, and, if possible, the differing opinions that have been given about it. State clearly what the ethical problem is that you will be dealing with. This section should be neutral and objective. Shorter is better than longer in this section. Do not try to solve the problem or present your opinion(s) in this section.

Part 2
Discuss three different ethical positions or theories that you would apply. Also reference any relevant sections of your professional code of ethics; e.g., APA, ACA, etc. Do not present your opinion(s) on the problem or attempt to solve it here.

Part 3
In this  final section, present what you think would be the best solution to the problem, along with your reasons for your solution and why you think your solution is superior to the others that might be given. This is the section in which you should discuss your problem and present your opinion(s). Longer is better than shorter in this section. Say what ethical theory or theories and professional-code sections you are using to arrive at your solution.

This should be a 2,100- to 2,800-word (or 6- to 8-page) paper, excluding cover page, abstract, and references, using APA formatting.

Analysis Paper( philosophy)

Directions: You may write your paper on Agent Smith in The Matrix or any other android or robot from a film (Cyborgs and others may qualify) . If not Agent Smith, I would approve any of the following: “David” from A.I., “Tron” or “Master Control” from Tron, “Sonny” from I, Robot, “Data” from Star Trek: The Next Generation, “Hal” from 2001, any replicant from Blade Runner, or “The Terminator” from Terminator 2. (Contact me if some other character or film interests you.)

Discuss the claim that even though Agent Smith is a program, he is a Sentient Being with mental states*. You will need to address the views of Paul Churchland, John Searle, functionalism, and Rene Descartes as well as answer for yourself. Begin with a brief introduction but number and address the five parts separately.

1.  Dualism: What exactly would Tron (Character Disney movie “Tron”) need according to Descartes’ theory of Substance Dualism? From the film do you think Tron meets Descartes’ criteria? Explain.

2. Identity Theory: In spite of some criticisms of it, Searle is an advocate of the Identity theory. Is Tron (Character Disney movie “Tron”) a “person” according to Searle? Why or why not?

3. Functionalism: What would a functionalist say about Tron’s (Character from  Disney movie “Tron”) personhood?

4. Eliminative Materialism: Does Churchland allow for Tron (Character from Disney movie “Tron”) to have “mental states”? Is Tron “one of us” according to Churchland’s theory? Explain.

5. You: Which view most closely corresponds to yours? Is Tron (Character from Disney movie “Tron”) a person according to you?

*Note: The Philosophers in Part may have different definitions in mind for the word “mental state”. Being clear on their respective definitions may go a long ways toward answering these questions. Some terms you may want to discuss (but are not required to): personhood, sentience, artificial, consciousness, intelligence, mentality, “one of us”.

Some Philosophical Questions about Robots in general and Smith’s program in particular:

· Philosophy of Mind: Do Robots have qualia? (see Ultimate Questions for a definition) Do they have minds? Are they sentient beings?

· Ethics and Freedom: Are they persons? Do they have rights? Are they morally responsible for what they do? Do they have free will?

Our Analysis Paper is primarily concerned with questions pertaining to the Philosophy of mind. Ethics will overlap with our issue but you need not consider the moral questions in this paper. You will be attempting to interpret whether 4 philosophical theorists (Churchland, Searle, a functionalist and Descartes) have room for Smith as a person. You should also include your view.

What is a Sentient Being? What is a Person? There are no universally agreed answers to these questions. But there are several philosophical theories that attempt to answer these questions. In one Star Trek (The Next Generation) episode, the Android Data is put on trial to see if he has intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness. In effect, this is their definition of a “sentient being”. This is not a bad attempt for a television program but should we accept this? How do we test for our criteria?

All four of the philosophical positions we are considering have different criteria and it is up to us to discover what the criteria are as well as to apply the criteria to the case of Smith. We, of course, have opinions about personhood as well. For instance, it is typically considered permissible to step on an insect but it is not permissible to injure a cocker spaniel. If we agree with this, then we are advocating a position about ethical status and perhaps even personhood. Of course, attitudes vary greatly in regards to eating or experimenting on other animals. Ethical issues permeate this metaphysical issue but, again, you need not focus on this aspect

A strongly legalistic and systemic approach entails federalism, which requires formal and informal methods essential for the functioning of an elaborate government structure. The United States is the most extensive and diverse federal system in the world, with 57 state and state-like regional governments; nearly 88,000 discrete and overlying municipal governments; and nearly 88,000 legislative bodies; various judicial systems; thousands of federal, state, local, and administrative agencies, and more than half a million elected official administrative agencies (Stephens and Wikstrom, 2006). On page 32, we read that “all models of the U.S. federal system are inadequate to explain the overall complexity and interaction that takes place in the system” (Stephens and Wikstrom, 2006). Deil Wright made a suggestion known as the “overlapping authority model,” which captures some of the complexity of intergovernmental relations in the U.S. and presents areas of political authority and/or governmental exclusivity for each of the three levels of government (federal, state, local). Power in the overlapping authority model tends to be widely dispersed, making bargaining necessary (Stephens and Wikstrom, 2006).

Models of federalism include the layer-cake, which is also known as dual federalism, which places local government at the bottom and limits authoritarian activity, with state governments serving in the middle, which are superior to local but succumbed to the federal government, thus leaving federal government at the top. There is also marble-cake federalism, also known as co-operative federalism, which mises the functions and relationships between each governmental function. While some have described our system as a “picket fence federalism” arrangement due to the vertical functional flow of influence and the responsibilities from the three levels(Stephens and Wikstrom, 2006). Levels of authority can be listed as separate authority model, centralized or unitary system, and as mentioned previously, the overlapping model. We have seen new federalism with each president, and it hasn’t always brought positive changes to the U.S. The “Iron Triangle” explains the conspiratorial alliance between bureaucracies, legislative committees, and interest groups. The three points collaborate mainly for financial gains and interests. This allows for the overturn of the democratic process by allowing few stakeholders to have an inadequate effect on legislation development affecting all (Stephens and Wikstrom, 2006).

The Obama administration’s main focus points were the Obamacare administration, education, climate change, financial reform, etc. While he used a framework for policy tools, but he abused federal mandating and other policies. Many of the policies that Obama pushed created a feud between state and federal governments. When we look at the issue of Obamacare, many states were not on board with the nationwide mandated healthcare. States pushed for their healthcare coverage agenda, but the Obama administration did not agree, thus creating tension between many states and the federal government. Sadly, in my opinion, there will be no federalism effect due to everything that he accomplished is currently being overturned. Everything that Trump worked hard to achieve in his four years in office is being thrown out the window in a matter of days. While there are instances where we can look at COVID and the nationwide shutdown, many states did not want to open back up once Trump decided it was time to begin opening businesses and returning to work. The actual effects of what is happening now are not being felt at this time, but once the states’ people begin to see these new changes, I fear it will not be suitable for our government.
