HISTORY 175 (PRIMARY SOURCE ANALYSIS)

Instructions: Read the primary source provided and answer the following questions at the bottom. The length of your analysis should be at least a paragraph or more. These assignments should not be answered in only 3-4 sentences. An excellent analysis will be thorough and detailed, providing a lot of in-depth discussion. Use complete sentences and check your grammar/spelling. Submit your answer as a text entry or as a separate file, saved as a word document or PDF. The grading rubric is posted at the bottom of this assignment page.

What does it mean to analyze and interpret a source?

When you are analyzing a text, you are breaking it down into parts to understand it. You then interpret each part by explaining it in your own words. You look at what it is, what the author meant, who the intended audience is, how ongoing events during that time affected the author’s argument, and why it is significant. As a result, you are doing more then just directly answering the question below.

—————————-

From Frederick Douglass, “The Composite Nation” (1869)

In a speech delivered in Boston, Frederick Douglass condemned anti-Asian discrimination and called for giving Chinese immigrants all the rights of other Americans, including the right to vote. Douglass’s vision of a country made up of people of all races and national origins—and enjoying equal rights—was too radical for the time, and remains controversial today.

We are a country of all extremes, ends and opposites; the most conspicuous example of composite nationality in the world. Our people defy all the ethnological and logical classifications. In races we range all the way from black to white, with intermediate shades which… no man can name a number… Our land is capable of supporting the fifth of all the globe. Here, labor is abundant and here labor is better remunerated than anywhere else. All moral, social, and geographical causes conspire to bring to us the peoples of all other over-population countries.

Europe and Africa are already here, and the Indian was here before either… Heretofore the policy of our government has been governed by race pride, rather than by wisdom… Before the relations of [blacks and Indians] are satisfactorily settled, and in spire of all opposition, a new race is making its appearance within our borders, and claiming attention [the Chinese]… Do you ask, if I favor such immigration. I answer I would. Would you have them naturalized, and have them invested with all the rights of American citizenship? I would. Would you allow them to hold office? I would

There are such things in the world as human rights. They rest upon no conventional foundation, but are external, universal, and indestructible. Among these, is the right of locomotion; the right of migration; the right which belongs to no particular race, but belongs alike to all… We shall mold them all… into Americans; Indian and Celt, Negro, and Saxon, Latin, and Teuton, Mongolian and Caucasian, Jew and Gentile, all shall here bow to the same law, speak the same language, support the same government, enjoy the same liberty.

Analyze and interpret the document to answer the following question(s):

  1. Who is Douglass’s answer to the question, “Who is an American?”
  2. Why does he believe that being able to move freely from one country to another should be considered a universal human right?
  3. Who is his intended audience?
  4. What is the intention/purpose behind this speech?

TIP: When analyzing a primary source document, consider who, what, when, and why. For example, how does location, current events (of the period), and who the author is play a role in the author’s intent/message? Remember that you are not just answering the question, you are also breaking down parts of the source to analyze and interpret the author’s message.

A successful and strong analysis will provide evidence (specific example from the text/quote) to help explain and support the interpretation. However, do not let the quotes overshadow your own analysis.

Explain the role of the community health nurse in partnership with community stakeholders for population health promotio

 1 DQ 1

Community and public health nurses consider the effect of ethnicity, culture, spiritual values, and geographic and socioeconomic conditions on the wellness of the population. Diverse populations have various health disparities and health inequities that affect their ability to maintain health and meet health care needs, according to Green (2018).

One of the essential roles of a community health nurse is to educate and provide best care practices that promote optimal health. They educate the client tailoring to their needs, as the needs of the population have changed.  Being a community health nurse is not just tending to the homebound geriatric population. Nurses also visit group homes to provide monthly antipsychotic medications to clients and manage their medications, for example. They are needed to manage cases of patients when it is not easily accessible to travel to hospitals or physician offices.

There are a variety of examples of care they provide are providing hospice care, wound care, assessing the needs of the homeless or addicted population, or a school nurse. Nurse guide and coordinate essential services needed such as social workers, and counselling services.
Community nurses can help promote local resources available to the patient that are not aware such programs are available, such as community youth programs. In order to plan interventions or treatment nurses must be aware of services offered by the community.

An example may be a mental health nurse assisting a patient that has been affected by a death of a family member. Educating the patient on the stages of grief is vital and providing local resources to attend counselling or grief groups will help that patient gain a sense of understanding through members of their community to help them process a great loss with other people that are going through the same thing.  A Pastor can help counsel a patient to understand the spiritual reasons of death and help them turn to their church leaders for strength and guidance.

Respond to the above post discussion using 200-300 words with references supporting discussion

Explain the role of the community health nurse in partnership with community stakeholders for population health promotion. Explain why it is important to appraise community resources (nonprofit, spiritual/religious, etc.) as part of a community assessment and why these resources are important in population health promotion.

American History Research Essay – Tuskegee Airmen

RESEARCH PAPER

Assignment: Each student will write a 6 to 8-page research paper on a topic that contributes to the study of American history since 1877.  The purpose of this assignment is to write a research paper in history that analyzes sources to answer a research question.

Detailed instructions:

1.  Thesis statement. Take a clear position and precisely state the argument you will make in your research paper. You must have a thesis statement and defend it with carefully chosen, detailed evidence.  The thesis must be clear and contain (in succinct form) the main points you will cover in your paper.  The structure and order of the thesis should reflect the structure and order in your paper.

2.  Organize your evidence carefully. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that clearly links back to your thesis.  Avoid making historical claims without making sure you provide sufficient evidence to prove your claim.  You must use in-text citations per MLA format.

3. Document, document, document. For the research paper, at a minimum, you must use two scholarly, academic, well-researched secondary sources from the timeframe covered in the course that come from offline scholarly, academic printed books and academic journals. You cannot use textbooks (including your course textbook), encyclopedia articles, website articles that are not from an offline published academic journal, juvenile non-fiction books or articles, blogs, chats, or wiki sites (especially Wikipedia) as the two

mandatory sources for your paper. Keep in mind that every borrowed idea or phrase must be documented with in-text citations and a “Works Cited” section using MLA format. The following from the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning provides insight into why you are relying on offline scholarly sources only for this writing assignment: “Internet vs. Print Sources:  Some professors will discourage you from using sources you find or access over the Internet. Although such restrictions may be excessive, there are reasons to be wary. It’s much easier to publish information on the Internet than to publish a book or periodical in print. Since it’s easier, Web posters are not always as careful to make sure that the information is accurate. For one thing, print publishing is more expensive, so many print publishers are careful not to make mistakes or to cut corners in case what they publish turns out to be unreliable—and therefore useless. The seeming anonymity of the Internet also encourages some people to write things quickly, without checking to be sure of their facts or their conclusions. Most of us have had the experience of sending by email something we wrote quickly—perhaps when rushed or angry. Often these are things we wouldn’t print, sign, and

mail, because those extra steps give us time to consider our words more carefully, and also because we recognize a higher expectation that things in print should be trustworthy.”

(Source: http://ctl.yale.edu/writing/using-sources/citing-internet-sources)

4.  State your conclusion. Your conclusion must support your thesis, and should tie into your introduction.

5.  Write clearly and concisely.  You do not have space to waste words.  Make every single sentence count.  Use direct quotes sparingly and only when absolutely necessary.  Grammar, spelling, and style do count. Use spell-check and grammar check as a minimum.

6.  Format properly. Double-space (“0” point) your paper, with one-inch margins, using Times New Roman 12 font in MLA format.  Your paper must include in-text citations and a Works Cited page listing the sources you are using.  There must be a minimum of 5 and ½ pages of manuscript text plus the Works Cited page.

Deliverable 3 – Employment Law Infographic

Title:

Module 03: The role of employment law in business relationships

Competency:

Evaluate employment law at the state and federal levels.

Scenario:

Your work as a contract employee for a U.S. based company that develops gaming software. Having been there for years, and going into the office five days a week for usually more than forty hours a week, you were inspired by the various projects you have worked on and in your spare time, using company equipment, you work on your own side project – an app that would give gamers an edge. You know that your company’s business partners would be very enthusiastic about this new product, and you would probably make a great profit; in fact, you might be able to retire! You decide to reach out to these business relationships to see who might have interest.

Instructions:

  • Review the situation and conduct scholarly research on employment law. Upon review of the given business situation, create an infographic that evaluates employment law utilizing both federal and state regulations (students should use their own state of residence regulations for the project).
    • Address the following:
      1. Distinguish between full-time, part-time, at-will, and contract employment statuses, and state which status reflects your employment position in this company.
      2. What federal, state and international laws explain the rights, responsibilities and protections of employees and employers in the employment relationship?
      3. What are the property rights of employees and employers for inventions as provided in federal intellectual property laws?
  • Use at least three credible sources. These should be cited and in APA format.

Rafi Case study

(Executive summary) Based on your analysis in the following questions, would you endorse the RAFI strategy to any of your institutional clients? (Hint: How much weight should you put on that asset in a portfolio?)

 2. Does Research Affiliates believe the stock market is efficient? Why does Research Affiliates think the Fundamental Index strategy produces better weights than the standard cap-weighted approach? (Avoid using case-specific jargon terms like “economycentric”)

3. Even if Research Affiliates views about fundamental weights being better than market cap weights were true, are there any extra costs/expenses for using fundamental weights in trading strategies that would not be present using market-cap-based weights?

4. Look at Exhibit 14 in the case. In this exhibit, what kinds of stocks get relatively more weight in the fundamental index strategy compared to the (cap-weighted) Russell 1000?

 5. Did the RAFI ETF earn CAPM alpha leading up to this decision? The data is on Canvas. Note that this ETF was essentially the only means investors had to actually invest real money using the fundamental index methodology.
6. RAFI’s sales pitch was based on the analysis in Exhibit 4. Notice the time period of their analysis and read the notes at the bottom of the Exhibit. Do you have any reason to trust your analysis more than RAFI’s analysis in Exhibit 4?

Instructions

Part 1: Law Enforcement Officer Arrives at the Scene Scenario

An 18-year-old high school student walks to class carrying a backpack. He is stopped by the school security guard and his backpack is searched. A loaded handgun is discovered. The school security guard takes the student to the principal’s office. The principal calls the local police. In the state where the school is located, it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon without a permit and all weapons are prohibited on campus.

Officer Smith arrives at the school approximately 10 minutes later. Officer Smith takes a statement from the school security guard and searches the student’s backpack. He seizes the gun and places the student under arrest. Officer Smith then asks the student if he would like to make a statement to explain why he was carrying a concealed weapon on campus.

The student replies, “What weapon? That’s not my backpack and I never saw that gun before.”

The student is then transported to the local jail. However, on the way to the local jail, Officer Smith asks the student again why he brought a loaded gun on campus. The student admits that it was his gun and stated that he needed it for protection. Upon arrival at the local jail, the student is booked. Six hours later, the student is interviewed by a Detective Columbo. The detective reads the student his Miranda warning and asks the student if he would like to make a statement.

The student replies, “No, I want a lawyer.”

Write a 1–page paper in which you:

  1. Examine the constitutional amendment or amendments that would relate to this situation.
  2. Outline the appropriate procedures you would need to follow to comply with the associated amendments to ensure admissibility of evidence.
  3. Evaluate the officer’s actions and determine whether his search, the student’s confession, and the weapon discovery were lawful and/or admissible. Provide a rationale for your opinion.
  4. Use at least two sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.
    • Consider using Cornell Law’s LII U.S. Constitution Web page. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as academic resources.
Part 2: Arrest and Trial Scenario

Tyler, a well-known escort service provider in his community, is suspected of the murder of an escort who worked for him. The local police meet Tyler at the airport when he arrives from a trip to Cancun. He is arrested for his suspected connection to the murder of the escort. The police do not inform Tyler of his right to remain silent or his right to counsel. They immediately begin to interrogate him. They continue to question him until he admits that he knew the prostitute and that she worked for him. He also admits that he was with her the night of the alleged murder. Tyler is transported to the local jail and booked. The prosecutor files charges of first degree murder against Tyler. Tyler does not waive his rights to a speedy trial. He asks that an attorney be appointed and demands a trial by jury.

Write a 1– page paper in which you:

  1. Examine the constitutional amendment or amendments that would relate to this situation.
  2. Identify and discuss four elements of arrest.
  3. Describe the appropriate procedures to comply with Tyler’s rights to due process.
  4. Examine any consequences that might occur if his right to due process is violated.
  5. Use at least two sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.
Part 3: Correctional Officers and Rights of Inmates

Hudson v. McMillian is a U.S. Supreme court case involving the excessive force resulting in a claim of cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment. The court’s decision resulted in the five-pronged Hudson test, also known as PANAM:

  • (P)erceived threat by correctional officers;
  • (A)ny and all efforts to de-escalate;
  • (N)eed for the application of force;
  • (A)mount of force that was used and;
  • (M)edical issues, and extent of any injuries, that are used to evaluate cases involving any use of force before trial and after conviction.

The test helps the courts determine whether correctional officers’ actions were reasonable, necessary, and conducted in good faith.

Watch the video scenario and take notes as you watch: CJ in Practice Constitutional Issue: Deprivation of Inmates’ Rights

Write a 1– page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize the events of this scenario and the persons involved.
  2. Examine the constitutional amendments related to this situation and whether the rights of the inmates in this scenario were violated. Support your opinion.
  3. Determine whether the incidents pass the five-pronged Hudson test discussed above.
  4. Recommend how the sergeant should respond to the officer’s behavior. Support your response.
  5. Use at least two sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.

The goal of this week’s analysis is to compare your current skill, competencies, and capabilities analysis of Trader Joe’s with what your think the future Key Success Factors (KSFs) for the company will be, drawing on data you research about the industry.

Be sure to use the attachment as reference page the article listed below needs to be included in the paper.

There is  Ager, D. L., & Roberto, M. A. (2013). Trader Joe’s (Harvard Business School Case No. 9-714-419). . Which i already paste so you can put it in the APA format of the reference page.

Post a polished Key Success Factor analysis that responds to each of the prompts below:

  1. Based on your projections for the implications of FUTURE five-forces of competition, P.E.S.T. (general environment), and stakeholder support (or stakeholder challenges), what essential skills, competencies, and capabilities will be CRITICAL in order for Trader Joe’s to survive or thrive in the future? Why? Support your evaluation with evidence and reasoning linked to appropriate knowledge.

Note: These critical areas may be the same as in the past, BUT they may not. Think this through carefully and use your innovative and economic thinking skills from prior courses. You must become futurists to be good strategists, which means there IS some ambiguity about the bets you will be making (that’s one of the responsibilities of senior leadership).

  2. Identify critical gaps in the skills, competencies, and capabilities that Trader Joe’s currently has versus what you think they will need in the future. Think about how Trader Joe’s can bridge that gap. If Trader Joe’s were to hire you as consultant to provide strategic direction in what specific skills, competencies, and capabilities the company should invest in or acquire (and how), which would you emphasize as critical and why?
  3.  Your original discussion post for the Capstone Forum will typically be 1 to 1 ½ single-spaced pages
