1 Essay Question A recurrent theme that runs through the various philosophies is some form of “happiness.” Think of John Stuart Mill’s writings of “higher pleasures,” or Bentham’s “happiness calculus”, or Aristotle’s “eudaimonia”, or Rand’s idea of “selfishness” just to name a few. What we are talking about are the ethical actions that identify us as human—in the best way possible. We all strive to self-actualize, to become the best that we can be. Sometimes we succeed and sometimes we fail, but if we have done our best with an ethical consideration of others, then it helps define us as good people. Your task is to identify who you are and who you want to be. Ask yourself things like what are your “higher pleasures,” or what makes you “happy”? Include the following, but feel free to add to this: 1. What is “happiness”? (remember, this is not always a momentary concept) 2. What actions have you done to achieve happiness? Give two or three examples. 3. A “right” action must be ethical (although it need not conform to societal standards). What made your actions ethical or “right”? Justify your answer. 4. What do your actions say about your values and concept as a person? 5. Choose someone you think exemplifies the ideal ethical person. Explain who and why. 6. Compare your actions (from #3 and #4) to the person in #5. 7. Conclusion: Where to you go from here? How can you better achieve happiness, in its highest sense?

2-1 Assignment: Project Outline

Overview

Leaders need input, especially from stakeholders, to move ideas along. Having a unique, insightful product or service is just one step. Project outlines that include careful consideration of a company’s mission, opportunities, and risks can help ideas gain momentum and snowball in significance.

Scenario

Now that you have written a blog post identifying critical elements needed to support the rationale of your project, outlining specifics is key! These specifics will be used in an upcoming elevator pitch you will submit to senior management in Milestone One. Before management will approve exploring the idea for new opportunities and funding, they have key performance indicators (KPIs) you will need to address. Your goal for this assignment is to provide an outline that strongly, yet carefully, presents an argument to move your concept forward.

Prompt

Using MarketLine, Yahoo Finance, and the company’s investor relations webpage, continue your investigation of the company you selected in your Module One blog post. Specifically, look at the company’s profile, financials, and SWOT analysis.

Using speculative strategies, articulate your thoughts. Remember, success may mean revenue to a for-profit business; however, to a non-profit, it may mean a specific outcome, such as donor retention rate, social media engagement, or email open rate.

Draft a project outline that presents a prospective timeline and targeted customer segment of your project. This project outline is a precursor to Milestone One: Elevator Pitch. The KPIs you need to consider and address in your outline are:

  • The intended customer: Describe the intended customer or customer profile for the new product or service.
  • Opportunities in the market: Explain the opportunities in the market based on your research.
  • The financial opportunity: Assess the financial opportunity that the project presents for increasing cash flow and topline revenue.
    • Can it be cash flow positive and profitable? For example, Zappos donates a pair of shoes for every pair of shoes sold. This leads to profit in the long run due to good CSR and company image, but is not immediately profitable.

Your contribution will be evaluated based on the quality of the input.

who can have this done by the May 8?

This assignment is due at the end of the course (Exam Week), no later than May 8th.

You are an intellectual living at the court of the late Medici family in Florence, Italy, during the very last portion of the 1500’s. This is the time during which the power and influence of the Medici had peaked and was now on a descending trajectory. As it was customary across that time period in Renaissance Italy, the Medici want to be surrounded with a vast array of “men of knowledge” so that, among other things, they can better understand the intellectual trends occurring in the world around them, which in turn will make it easier to dominate it.

A lot is happening in Europe at that time: new and emerging philosophical currents are often in questionable accordance with the rule of Religion. At the same time the Muslim world in the south remains a powerful force that needs to be reckoned with. Lastly, echoes of a faraway and extremely successful civilization in the Far Eastern lands of Asia (Chinese Empire) are reaching the Medici Court, about which more needs to be known. The Medici need to have a clear picture of who they can be their allies and who are likely to be their enemies to coordinate their future foreign policy. At the same time they are very curious to learn whether the new trend called “science” can benefit their rise to power – without upsetting the all-powerful Pope or the Roman Catholic Church.

You have been asked to coordinate the creation and delivery of a cultural program that will assist the Medici understand the cultural climate so that they can appropriately strategize their climb to world dominance. Specifically, you have been asked to invite to court five key religious, philosophical, artistic thought-leaders from around the western world with which we are concerned in our course that embody the then-current trends of each discipline.

Your task is to identify the exact individuals that you will invite to court (note that they must be living during the time period encompassing the XVII century – the 1500’s) and summarize what they will present.

For this project you will create the following deliverable:

Individual Presentation: deliver a video-recorded or live presentation of about 5 minutes in length for each of the five intellectuals who were invited to Florence (5 minutes x 5) during which you provide in first person their presentation to the Medici court. During each presentation you will need to introduce yourself (impersonating each individual) to the court, as well as provide a detailed explanation of their respective doctrines as well as how and why their knowledge will benefit the Medici. You will not be allowed to read your presentation from notes: only a maximum of 5-6 bullet points for each individual is allowed during this exercise.

Note: narrated PowerPoint presentations can be produced using MS PowerPoint and then uploaded as “unlisted” (not publicly available) to a free streaming media service such as YouTube. Alternatively students can use Google Chrome and a free plug-in called Screencastify. The free version of Screencastify lets users create narrated presentations up to 10 minutes long. Presentation longer than 10 minutes can be broken up into as many 10-minute segments as needed.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE HUMAN PERSON PAPER

Please submit a short commentary (around 3-4 pages long) on the following passage in Plato’s Republic

The passage, commonly known as Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, is found near the beginning of Book Seven. The passage begins on pg. 193 of your paperback book (ed. Bloom, Plato’s Republic), pg. 216 of the PDF, or the beginning of pg. 514a in the margins, “Next, then, I said, make an image of our nature in its education and want of education…” and continues to the middle of pg. 197, pg. 220 of the PDF, “… And accomplishes this object. – So it seems, he said.”, that is, the middle of pg. 518d in the margins.

Your commentary should achieve two goals.

One is descriptive. You should tell me what is happening in these paragraphs in simple language. Figure out what the views  are and describe them to me. What is the context of the discussion, or how does the passage I’ve selected relate to bigger thematic issues at work in the Republic? Perhaps you want to draw attention to thematic issues that are present in earlier or later Books as well. Aim to restate the protagonist’s view here in a few short sentences before further describing the structure and content of the passage selected. Accuracy is important, but so is recognizing when the speaker is, in fact, developing a valuable aspect of their argument. Your primary aim here is to CLARIFY the selected material. Think about what steps the discussion takes, and why it takes those steps.

The second goal is evaluative. You should tell me how strong you think SOCRATES’ argument(s) is (or are), and why. Is he persuasive? How compelling is the evidence he provides for his view(s)? Consider possible objections to your own position, and consider how you can stand up to criticisms of your EVALUATION.

Remember to use extra sign-posting! This means: tell me what you are going to say, what you are saying, and what you’ve just said. Being clear with the structure of your paper is a big asset. And remember to go over any notes you have from the reading, from the discussion board posts (where we have covered this material), from earlier class meetings, etc. Above all, engage directly with the text whenever possible. This means CITING the text. Additional secondary sources are NOT required, but are always welcome. However, if you are CITING the text, this means you will need minimally a single-entry bibliography, where you indicate the text you are citing.

employee performance

Throughout the previous weeks, we identified and discussed the elements of a Total Rewards Package. In an effort to lay the ground for the upcoming weeks, exploring some of these elements in further detail, you will create a PowerPoint presentation that is reflective of the following:

1)  Type of position you are seeking if you were to leave your current position.

2)  The location (if it matters where the job is located), compensation, and benefits you are wanting. You will want to consider the differences in cost of living when evaluating the compensation and benefits.

3)  Using your current organization (if not currently working anywhere feel free to choose another organization you find interesting), identify and discuss your current total rewards package.

3) Select an organization or entity you are interested in working for, identifying and discussing the total rewards package offered.  Look at both direct and indirect compensation.

(3) Compare the two packages, evaluating the pros and cons of each organization’s total rewards package and opportunity

(4) In closing, make the determination as to which organization you would choose and why.

The purpose of the assignment is that often times, when people are looking for a new job; they are often enticed by the direct compensation, i.e. the wages, not really giving any thought to the benefits before making their decisions. In addition, it is common for employees to be unaware of the benefits that are available to them as well as to access them. Besides becoming familiar with the benefits offered to employees by yours and other organizations, you be able to evaluate the total compensation being offered by organizations for the purpose of job offers and benchmarking to help your organization remain competitive.

Using the Government Spending and Taxation case, Chapters 5 and 6, the knowledge you have gained in this course, as well as at least three additional credible resources, analyze the case by addressing the following:

·  Describe how government spending and the composition of the government changed in recent decades. In other words, in what areas has the government cut spending and in what areas has the government increased spending in recent decades?

·  Determine if this change in government spending and composition will help Americans achieve a higher living standard. Be sure to support all opinions with research.

·  Assess if democracy can survive if the majority of the U.S. citizens pay little or nothing in taxes while benefiting directly from a higher level of government spending. Why or why not?

·  Propose the composition of government, government spending, and taxation that you believe would work best. Be sure to be specific and support your proposal with research.

Case 2: The Economics of Social Security

Case 3: Keynes and Hayek: Contrasting Views on Sound Economics and the Role of Government (Case 4 in the text)

Read the Special Topic 2, pages 439 through 444. You may also want to review Chapters 11 and 12 of Macroeconomics: Private and Public Choice as the role of government and different views of government intervention were discussed.

Using the Keynes and Hayek: Contrasting Views on Sound Economics and the Role of Government case, Chapters 11 and 12, the knowledge you have gained in this course, as well as at least three additional credible resources, analyze the case by addressing the following:

·  Describe briefly how Keynes’s and Hayek’s economic theory and views differ.

·  Contrast the two views on how savings may be harmful or beneficial to the economy.

·  Compare the two views on whether the economy would fluctuate more or less over the business cycle without government intervention. Be sure to address both the inherent stability of the market economy as well as the impact of government interventions to steer the economy.

·  Hypothesize on which economist theory, Keynes or Hayek, you believe is more accurate and why. Be specific and support your hypothesis with research.
