Case Study of Physician Practice Management and Relative Value Unit Analysis

Please follow the instructions that are provided below. Attached is a sample analysis and the article that is required.

Instructions:

In this assessment, you will evaluate the physicians’ practice financial condition based on the following Relative Value Unit (RVU) calculations and analysis:

  1. Average and Marginal Costs per RVU,
  2. Total Average Cost,
  3. Total Marginal Cost per CPT code, and
  4. Analyzing the information to assist the physicians in using these costs appropriately and making informed decisions.

You will be graded based on your understanding of the calculations, the accuracy of your calculations, the validity of your conclusions, and your ability to clearly communicate your analysis. To complete this assignment, follow these steps:

  1. Review the article How Managerial Accountants Make Physician’s Practices More Profitable
  2. From this financial information, calculate the three RVU calculations:
  3. Average and Marginal Costs per RVU,
  4. Total Average Cost, and
  5. Total Marginal cost per CPT code.
  6. In proper APA format, write a 3-5 page paper (include a cover and reference page not included in page count). For each RVU calculation, in a paragraph:
    1. Calculate the costs,
    2. Show your calculations, and
    3. Write a conclusion about the physician practice’s financial condition and discuss how you can assist the physicians in using these costs in making informed decisions.

*Please use headings for each paragraph and category to decipher the discussion and organize the paragraphs.

Use the following assumptions:

Assume that during the FY2016 year, Lovely Life LLC historical costs were $750,000 when 11,000 RVUs were produced and $950,000 when 14,000 RVUs were produced.  The contract specifies that the number of RVUs per service CPT code are five (5).

Personal Research Narrative

Summary of assignment

 • Task: o

o o

You will complete the following

Expand on the topic that you researched for writing assignment #2 by locating at least five more sources on the topic.

Take notes as you read through the sources.

Write a personal research narrative in which you not only comment on what the sources say but also comment on your research journey that led you to these sources.

• Length: 1800-2400 words

• Format: APA

• Sources: 10 sources, six of which should be scholarly sources

More details that explain each of these sections are provided below.

Background to this Essay

In many classes in the past, you might have been instructed never to use the word “I” in your writing. However, throughout this class, in both the response essay and the reflective annotated bibliography, you have been instructed that the use of the word “I” was totally acceptable, even encouraged. In this essay, this use of first-person point of view continues. This essay is a research essay in which you use the word “I.”

Ken Macrorie, a professor at Western Michigan University, wrote a textbook in 1980 called The I-Search Paper. In the book, Macrorie criticized traditional research papers that students were often asked to produce in classes. He designed, instead, a type of research paper that asked students to use the first-person point of view (“I”) in their papers, encouraged them to explore topics that were of interest to them, and required that they comment on their research journey in finding sources and information on their topics as much as on any arguments or conclusions they were making on their topics.

This writing assignment in WRTG 291 is informed by Macrorie’s approach, although it does not involve all elements of the research process he asked for.

In your WRTG 291 class, you have been given access to a chapter from Linda Bergmann, “Writing a Personal Research Narrative.” Please access that chapter.

In that chapter, please review “The Personal Research (‘I Search’) Paper,” starting on page 160.

On page 160, Bergmann (2010) writes:

Although an I-Search assignment calls for a personal narrative, like most academic writing it is written to communicate to a particular audience, not for the writer alone. Its purpose is to help you discover and communicate the personal and professional significance of your research to a particular audience.

Moreover, pages 161-162 in Bergmann’s chapter list some steps to take in organizing and preparing to write your paper.

Sample Personal Research Narrative Essay

On pages 162-166 of Bergmann’s chapter is a sample personal research narrative essay. Another sample I-Search paper can be seen by clicking here, although this example has fewer sources and fewer scholarly sources than this assignment calls for.

Moving from the Reflective Annotated Bibliography to the Personal Research Narrative

For writing assignment #2, you wrote a reflective annotated bibliography. In that assignment, for each of the articles you found, you wrote not only a précis of the article but also some vocabulary, reflection, and quotes from the article.

Hopefully through that assignment, you developed an interest in a focused aspect of your topic. The following describe some examples of focusing your topic:

• You may have conducted research on whether Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are effective classroom environments. For writing assignment #2, you may have found 5-6 articles on MOOCs in general.

Perhaps, as a result of your findings, you have now done more research and have focused on MOOCs for a particular field of study (e.g., computer programming or creative writing). You then found more articles related to not only MOOCs but also MOOCs for learning computer programming or MOOCs for learning creative writing.

• You may have conducted research on cyber breaches in the health care industry. For writing assignment #2, you may have found 5-6 articles on various cybersecurity incidents in hospitals or other areas of the health care industry.

Perhaps, as a result of your findings, you have now done more research and have focused on not only what breaches have occurred but what training practices are being implemented to avert such occurrences in the future. As a result, you found more articles that rounded out your research on this topic.

• You may have conducted research on the CSI effect. For writing assignment #2, you may have found 5-6 articles on studies that analyze whether a CSI effect exists.

Perhaps, as a result of your findings, you have now done more research and have focused on the various types of CSI effects that are shown in the literature. You then found more articles that expanded your knowledge of the CSI effect.

It is this research experience on which you will write the personal research narrative.

Examining the Sample Personal Research Narrative in Bergmann’s Chapter:

Note how, in the sample student personal research narrative on page 162, the student begins by providing the background that gave him interest in the topic. He then discusses his first steps in researching the topic. As he describes his steps in the research process, he uses expressions like, “I was astounded by…” or “This idea seemed valid to me, but…” or “…let me to wonder…” or “At this point in my exploration I have come up with a slight dilemma.”

For your personal research narrative, you want to follow the same pattern. Describe to the reader what you thought when you started researching, what you already knew about the subject, what interested you in the subject, etc. Then describe your various steps, commenting on what surprised you, what ideas did not seem valid to you, what research articles you may have questioned, etc.

You might consider your response essay, which was the first essay you wrote for this class. The personal research narrative is, in some ways, an expanded response essay. In the personal research narrative, you may be responding to several authors while providing a narrative of your thought process and learning process throughout your research journey.

Length and Other Requirements:

Your paper should be 1800-2400 words. It should include at least ten sources, six of which should be scholarly. The sources are to be cited and listed in APA format.

In addition, the paper should be formatted according to APA style (e.g., you should include a running head with page numbers, have appropriate margins, etc. in accordance with the video tutorial you observed in class, How to format your paper according to APA style.)

Additional resources:

In our class, in the e-reserves section, we have a chapter from the book by Graff, G. and Birkenstein, C, They Say / I Say: The Moves that Matter in Academic Writing with Readings. The chapter mentions various techniques to apply in stating what an author said and your response to the author. As was recommended for the response essay, it is recommended that you read through that chapter so that you might apply these techniques to this essay.

Consumer Report

Consumer Report–100 Points

Topic

Choose a consumer product to investigate, such as a camera, small 4×4 pickup truck, CD player, computer printer, computer software, bicycle, motorcycle, television, power tool, rowing machine, stove or microwave. Try to choose a product that you or your family might consider purchasing. You will do research on this product and present your findings in form of a report. Make sure to choose all your items for a similar category. If you’re looking at motorcycles for instance, then you could look at three different 1500 cc touring models.

Sources

You must use six-eight primary or secondary sources in your paper. Your primary research can be in the form of interviews with individuals (users, owners, salespeople, technicians) in a position to comment on the merits of the product. You also could use a brief survey, if you like, to gather opinions. Secondary research will be in the form of pamphlets, magazine articles, or periodicals. Avoid using books for this assignment.

Length, Content, and Style

Excluding the cover page, table of contents, abstract, and sources page, your paper should be about six double-spaced typed pages. Your paper can be longer than six pages, but don’t make it shorter. Include a Works Cited or References section, based on the style of documentation that you use (required). Consult Appendix A pages 669-70 for more information. You also can use the handbook from College Writing or Composition I, if you still have it.

Appearance

All reports must be neatly typed in 12 point type on good quality paper.

Grading

Your report will be graded for completeness, format, content and clear writing. Try to proofread your report carefully and at least have one other person look at it before you submit the final draft.

Submission

Include all the drafts that you write of this paper (don’t throw them away), and also include any pamphlets or copies of article that you have. I take into consideration the research that you did for this report, so that’s why I like to see how much work you have involved. Also, don’t just submit your smooth copy of your final report without anything else in your folder. I like to see everything that you do.

Here are some examples of this assignment.

Journal Analysis 1

Pick one of the following terms for your research:

•Trust

•Authenticity

•Assertiveness

•Motivation

Find ONE peer reviewed article written in the last three years that discusses your chosen term as it relates to leadership.

Summarize and discuss this article per the instructions in the syllabus. You must use APA style, including proper citations, headers, and grammar.

Instructions:

Within each module, there is a list of one or more key terms. Each student will select one of the key terms and conduct a search of Campbellsville University’s online Library resources to find ONE (1) recent peer reviewed article (within the past 3 years) that closely relates to the concept. Your submission must include the following information in the following format:

DEFINITION: a brief definition of the key term followed by the APA reference for the term; this does not count in the word requirement.

SUMMARY: Summarize the article in your own words- this should be in the 150-200-word range. Be sure to note the article’s author, note their credentials and why we should put any weight behind his/her opinions, research or findings regarding the key term.

DISCUSSION: Using 300-350 words, write a brief discussion, in your own words of how the article relates to the selected chapter Key Term. A discussion is not rehashing what was already stated in the article, but the opportunity for you to add value by sharing your experiences, thoughts and opinions. This is the most important part of the assignment.

REFERENCES: All references must be listed at the bottom of the submission–in APA format.

Be sure to use the headers in your submission to ensure that all aspects of the assignment are completed as required.

Essay/Research

Unlike our previous assignments where I have discouraged you from relying on sources other than our assigned materials, this one requires some outside research.  In reading Chapter 5 of DeGrazia’s book, we see that his arguments against eating meat are based on considerations of the moral status of animals.  However, on pp. 75-6, he gives a number of reasons why changing our eating habits would promote human welfare.  These are offered as prudent reasons for changing our habits rather than moral reasons.  (In other words, these are reasons why changing our habits is prudent; they are not  claiming a change is morally required.)  For a utilitarian, these facts will actually be part of the moral argument but since DeGrazia is arguing based on rights, they are not part of the moral argument for him.

For this assignment, pick one of the kinds of reasons he offers on those two pages and briefly checks it out.

What evidence can you find?

Does the evidence support or contradict DeGrazia’s claims?  (Obviously, really checking things out would require searching many sources, but for this assignment, one is fine.  We’re going to rely on the fact that everyone in the course is finding one source to give us a variety of kinds of evidence.)

For your post, you will need to find one outside source (i.e., not any of our assigned readings).  It needs to be a responsible source (e.g., not the website for a company or the Beef Board, not Wikipedia, etc.).  It can come from a textbook, from responsible websites, from journal articles, books in the library, etc.  Use good judgment.  Ask me if you are uncertain.

Explain the information that you found and how it fits with DeGrazia’s points or contradicts them.  Be sure to provide the relevant information on your source so that others can check it out if they so desire.

It should be about 250-300 words long. It is worth 20 points.

Discussion and Professional assessment(PA)

Prior to reading this Discussion, please read the PA assignment (Below) and understand what the assignment is asking you to complete. Once you have an understanding of the PA assignment, please continue to the paragraph below to complete Discussion.

Your discussion should summarize the articles in such a way that it can justify any arguments you may present in your PA assignment and should be different from the abstract. In addition to your researched peer-reviewed article, you must include an example of the article researched as it is applied by industry (company, business entity, and so forth).

Important: Please ensure that your reference for the article is in correct APA format, as your reference in your discussion post. Depending on which electronic database you use, you should see a “Cite” selection for your article. In addition, there should be a variety of articles summarized and as such, students should have different articles summarized. Your summary MUST include ALL of the following in your DQ post (include every item in the bullet list below, or you will not receive full credit):

Do these in order:

●  In correct APA format, write the Reference of the article.

●  Clearly state what the article is about and its purpose.

●  Describe how you will use it in your upcoming assignment.

●  Repeat for a total of six (6) peer-reviewed sources.

Professional Assessment

write a minimum of four (4) pages of high quality well written APA formatted standard about the following scenario.  Please keep in mind that this assignment is quantitative, therefore do not forget to use the figures and charts.

Price of oil in international markets has dropped stunningly 60% in the past twelve months. Among the factors mentioned behind this drastic fall is the millions of barrels of oil produced in the US called shale oil.” and analyze:

●  The market structure for oil industry

●  The supply and demand for oil in that market structure

●  The pricing of oil at the presence of OPEC and the role of Speculators

●  Why shale oil is a substitute for oil and explain the news in regard to the Cross elasticity of demand.

REPLY TO MY PEER DISCUSSION AND WORD COUNT SHOULD BE MIN 150

PHILIP,

Hello all, when it comes to finding a landscaper to cut your grass, you will have no problem finding someone and they will have no difficulty finding customers. This is a very COMPETITIVE MARKET. You could say the providers are a dime a dozen and they could say the same about customers. Other than a few minor differences in quality of work, you could expect their services to be close in price to each other.

When it comes to choosing where you do your grocery shopping, there are several stores you can choose from that offer identical and/ or similar products with competitive prices. Public grocery stores offer incentives like buy one get one and also have generic products sold much cheaper than the name brands. Club stores are structured a little differently than their public counterparts but they are both OLIGOPOLISTIC.

Club stores usually carry their own line of products as well as some certain name brands and use no compete agreements which indicates COLLUSION with their competitors. The prices at the club are usually much cheaper than the public stores but you must buy in bulk. Quite often some items, if not whole isles are moved around to make you spend more time searching which increases the likelyhood of more products being purchase.

Typically there are items placed at the end of an isle, or a bump out to spotlight a product which is being promoted at a discounted price. An item that was displayed at the end of an isle three weeks ago could be replaced by another one, same brand, but the previous item might be found half way down the isle.

Product packaging has an impact on buying. Generic brand products are proprietary to the store that is selling the product and are usually white packages with colored writing only, and are always a cheaper alternative to brand names without quality sacrifice. Brand names rely on the familiarity of their label design and when loyalty to a brand is established, a consumer will usually tolerate a price increase.

The industry giants such as car manufacturers, phone companies, large grocery chains, including the big brand names that they sell, to name a few, are in the category of oligopolies. MONOPOLIES include such entities as water and electricity providers. This is where your freedom of choice ends, as these are neccessity products for everyone. In contrast to the competitive market where they cannot effect market prices, a monpolistic advantage is that the price is in their control as they are the market with no competition.

Advanced registered nurse

Advanced registered nursing graduates are entering the profession at dynamic time when roles and scope of practice are shifting based on developments in legislation and policy in response to the evolving needs of the health care system. Professional nursing organizations play an important role in making sure the perspectives of advanced registered nurses are heard, and in supporting nurse specialties in their efforts to expand their scope of practice and their full participation throughout the health care system.

For this assignment, you will conduct research on the current scope of practice for leadership (nurse leader) and efforts that are being made to expand that scope and the role of the advanced nurse in positively influencing the health care system. Write a 1,250-1,500-word paper that includes the following:

  1. A discussion of the scope of your future role as an advanced registered nurse, including any regulatory, certification, or accreditation agencies that define that scope.
  2. A discussion of three professional nursing organizations that you think are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing. Of these organizations, evaluate the one that you would most like to join. How do its goals and mission fit in with your worldview and philosophy of care? How might membership in this organization improve your practice?
  3. A discussion of a controversial or evolving issue that is most likely to affect your scope of practice or role in the next few years. How do you think this issue could influence the profession and other stakeholders, and why does it matters to the advanced registered nurse?

You are required to cite five to 10 sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

American History I

Risk is inherent in providing healthcare services. We will always deal with a certain amount of risk as we go about our work of caring for patients each day. Discuss at least two specific healthcare projects, services, or processes that come with significant risk. As CEO of your own healthcare facility, how would you work to reduce risk in these areas?

Please include the name of the person or question to which you are replying in the subject line. For example, “Tom’s response to Susan’s comment.”

ALSO PLEASE REPLY TO STUDENTS COMMENT BELOW

Two examples of healthcare projects that pose organizational risk are 1) the implementation of an electronic health record system (EHR) to replace an existing paper-based system; and 2) implementation of telehealth services.  In these examples, there can be a physical risk that accompanies placement of new equipment, such as physical plant and clinic layout changes that may cause trips and falls, which can result in staff and patient injuries.  Another physical risk could be physiological impacts to staff using the equipment, such as whether the new equipment is ergonomically sound for daily use, and if not, the potential impact to lost days of work due to injury.   Financial risks to be considered include the cost of new equipment and ongoing maintenance, the cost of specialized training, and the cost to provide temporary help or vendor consultations to support staff while they’re trying to get over the learning curve.  Another financial risk concerns the privacy of health information as there are fines associated with breaches, as well as a loss of trust from patients and their families.  Psychological risk can include providers who are being asked to use new technology, which may be difficult to adapt to and cause frustration; or remote encounters via telehealth that negatively affect the behavior of both staff and patients, or their patient-provider relationships.

As an administrator, a comprehensive risk assessment would need to be conducted before taking major changes to the delivery of health care services.  The risk assessment would include: identifying potential harm (i.e., physical, psychological or financial), identifying who could be harmed; determining risk levels, identifying mitigating factors already in place and new precautions to be put into place, consultation with stakeholders who can be impacted; completing a cost-benefit analysis, arriving at final decision, and documenting the entire risk assessment process, findings and decisions
