Introduction to Risk and Crisis Communications

The tragedies of 9/11 marked a turning point in the perception of the word “crisis,” especially to people in the United States who had never experienced such an attack on their own soil. The attacks were also a turning point in the perceptions of crisis management and crisis communications.

A crisis management/communications plan saved the lives of numerous people in the World Trade Center (WTC) on that fateful day. Rick Rescola was head of security for Morgan Stanley, which occupied 40 floors in one of the WTC towers. After the 1993 terrorist attack on the WTC, Rescola formed a crisis management team to try to avert an attack or to help employees survive another attack. The team members were in agreement that another attack would occur, and that it would probably occur at the WTC because of the symbolism of the towers being the tallest in the United States.

Team Rescola, as it was called, determined that the next attack would not be a ground attack, because the garage was protected after the 1993 incident. They even took a test flight around the buildings and predicted the attack would be by air.

Crisis communications was necessary to convince employees and managers that preparations needed to be made and that training for evacuation was necessary, and to explain how it would be done. Subsequently, there were drills. Rescola had lighting put in the stairways, and every person knew where the stairways were.

When the planes struck, WTC security advised all persons that it was safer to stay in the building. Rescola and his team began to evacuate employees. A glitch occurred in that one of the stairways was blocked by debris. Visibility was hampered either by smoke or darkness or both. Survivors and some of Rescola’s team members, consultants who were not in the building at the time, told the History Channel that team Rescola went to each floor and yelled, “Is anyone here?” If so, they led them out by alternate stairways. They say the team saved 95 percent of the total number of Morgan Stanley employees.

However, there was not enough time for them to reach every floor. Rescola and some of his team members died when the buildings collapsed. His wife said, when she saw the buildings go down on television, she knew her husband was there still trying to get everyone out.

Questions

 1. Consider the Rescola story, what should offices in skyscrapers and large buildings do other than plan for evacuations?
2. Imagine the employees who objected to the training: what would be persuasive messages to them?
3. The 1993 attack was considered a prodrome by Rescola. Why didn’t others see it?
4. In a crisis situation, using the image restoration theory, how could an organization determine which publics should receive which messages? Why would you send different messages to different publics?

Note about this assignment:  To ensure students are properly placed into the English courses that  will best set them up for successful college writing, it is customary  for students to have their writing skills assessed. For students without  transfer credit for college-level English courses, the writing you  provide in Assignment 2 will be assessed to determine whether you should  be placed into ENG090 or into ENG116. This review of your writing will  not affect your grade on the assignment or the overall course; your  instructor will grade Assignment 2 based on the rubric for the course,  which is separate from the writing review.

What to submit/deliverables: Word document that contains Parts 1‐3 of the Assignment 2 Template.

What is the value of doing this assignment?  In this assignment, you will reflect on the qualities, values,  strengths, areas of improvement, and accomplishments that capture who  you are and how they connect to the 10 Skills and your personal,  academic, and professional goals. You‘ll then practice your  communication skill by writing about what you‘ve identified in ways  appropriate for a CV or résumé (you will not need to complete a résumé).  You‘ll use this information in Assignment 3 to create an action plan  for developing skills that will help you reach your future goals. After  completing this assignment, you will have a document you can bring to  the Career Center where counselors can help you further develop your  career strategy.

Your goal for this assignment is to:  Reflect on and communicate your skills, goals, and accomplishments. To  truly develop your communication skill it is important that you write  using your own words and do not cut and paste from the Skills Definition  table or any other source.

Deliverable 6-Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Information Gathering & Decisi

Assignment Content

  1. Competency
Select appropriate software platforms for sales management and customer relationship management (CRM).

    Student Success Criteria
View the grading rubric for this deliverable by selecting the “This item is graded with a rubric” link, which is located in the Details & Information pane.

    Scenario
You are the regional sales manager for International Herb Express (IHE) which is a large, US-based spice & herbs supplier. IHE sells to other businesses that purchase bulk spices and spice blends for use in their end products. The primary customers are baking and soup mix corporations that sell to other businesses, for example, bakeries, restaurants, other food-service, and regional grocery chains. IHE is launching a new spice blend that reflects a more diverse cultural & ethnic flavor profile than IHE’s traditional offerings.
The abridged marketing strategy for this new spice blend is to target both current customers, but also to reach new customers that are target regions with higher ethnic diversity and/or the more adventurous “foodies” market. The marketing efforts will focus on taste testing, sampling, and on-site promotion. IHE is launching this marketing plan to help create a product offering that is not as commodity-driven (as most spices and herbs are the same quality no matter where they are purchased) and can potentially offer higher profit margins.
It is important to note that spices and other ingredients are raw goods and traded as commodities. The raw price for these goods changes on a day-to-day basis. Pricing is based on classic supply and demand, though nature is a key contributor to the supply–extreme weather as well as health of crops have a direct impact on the supply chain and access to the raw goods.

    Instructions
The Board of Directors has decided that the sales and marketing organization at IHE desperately needs an upgrade in managing customer relationship information. This information includes basic data on customers, but also important facts that can be useful to marketing, manufacturing, and logistics.
You have been selected to represent the sales force’s needs as part of a team of stakeholders that will meet to create a recommendation to the Board of Directors on a CRM approach. The recommendation will include the top-3 CRM companies to be considered to work with IHE.
To prepare for your role on the team, you are going to research and explore existing CRM companies to evaluate information to share at the first meeting. You will want to be prepared to discuss details, so you have decided to create:

    • The steps to select and implement the right CRM system
    • Including the expected timing of the various steps
    • A list of CRM system needs and wants for the sales force to be effective
    • A table that compares the 3 companies on the list of needs and wants you identified
    • A supporting document to explain the previous steps to further clarify and rationalize the choices made
    • These tasks can be prepared as either PowerPoint slides, Word, or Excel documents that would be useful to the assembled stakeholder team to discuss CRM.

Mike and his young girlfriend, Tina, both out of work and penniless, thought that love was all that mattered and decided to get married. Although Mike had no money, he told Tina he was going to buy her an engagement ring. Tina inquired how he could afford it and he looked at her, winked, and said, “watch me”. The couple went to Malaguti’s Jewelry store and Tina picked out the ring of her dreams, which cost $5,000.00. Mike paid in cash and Tina could not understand how and asked where Mike got the money. Mike rushed Tina from the store with the ring.

Mike told Tina not to worry about the money and besides, it only cost him $500.00 because the money was counterfeit and he had purchased it earlier from his friend Tony. The argument ended as he kissed her and slipped the ring onto her finger. They got married the next day at the Justice of the Peace.

After the ceremony they decided to go to the local bar and drink to their wedded bliss. While there, several friends purchased multiple rounds of shots for them. Mike drank what Tina was unable to. When Mike ordered more, the bartender Tommy, refused to serve him further due to his condition. An argument ensued and Mike pulled out a gun from his pocket and fired a single shot which grazed Tommy’s arm, ricocheted and killed Maria, another bartender, who was standing behind Tommy.

Mike grabbed Tina and started to leave. Tina, who had come to her sense about Mike by now, resisted, but Mike forced her out and pushed her into his car. Tina insisted that if he did not turn himself into the police, she would. Mike drove to his friend Tony’s apartment. Mike pushed Tina, now hysterical, into Tony’s apartment and told Tony what happened. Mike, now panicked, aimed the gun at Tina. Tony, a small time x-con did not want to be charged with murder, so he stepped in front on Mike to try to stop him. Before Mike could accomplish this however, Tina had backed away from Mike to an open window from which she fell to her death. Mike then hit Tony over the head with the gun and Tony fell to an unconscious state. Before leaving, Mike filled his pockets with Mike’s phony money to use for his getaway.

Mike flagged a taxi down to take to his apartment. The taxi driver, Marie, realized the money was phony Mike had paid his fare with. In a fit of anger, and remembering where she dropped Mike off, Marie decided to get the money that was owed to her and went to confront Mike. After no one answered the door, Marie noticed a doggie door on the side door. She decided to slip through the dog door and tip toe into the apartment to get her money. In the dark, she tripped over a skate board, hit her head. In the morning the police were called to Mike’s apartment. Marie was taken to the hospital and eventually released.

Blueprint Project

The Assignment

All components of the assignment must be turned in as one document:

  1. The executive summary: Write an Executive Summary of the course (2–3 paragraphs) that addresses the following questions:
    • Which content and assignments in this course improved your understanding of managing people and fostering collaboration within your organization (or one with which you are familiar)?
    • What impact has your improved understanding had or (what do you anticipate it will have) on the value you will bring to your role within an organization?
    • How have the content and assignments changed the way you think of the manager’s role within the organization and the way you will practice management and collaboration?
    • How have the content and assignments shaped your goals now and how do you anticipate they will shape your goals in the future?
    • How has the content in this course helped you appreciate the role that managers have in facilitating positive social change within an organization or more broadly?
  2. After considering what you have learned in the course, review the article by Christensen (2010). Then create a strategy for your professional and personal life that will enable you to be the person you described in “Your Sentence” in Week 3. As part of your strategy, be sure to include responses to the following questions:
    • How can I be sure that I will be happy in my career and be the manager I aspire to be?
    • How can I be sure that my relationships with my spouse/partner and my family become an enduring source of happiness?
    • How can I be sure I will maintain my personal integrity, regardless of ethically challenging situations, or morally ambiguous situations? (Hint: Most people consider themselves to be ethical and would not think they could violate their personal integrity. But what would you do if your employer asked you to perform a task or make a decision you are ethically uncomfortable with (but is not illegal), when failure to carry out such a task would risk your termination, your next promotion, or upcoming pay increase? What might you do if you discovered that a task or policy you carried out in good faith had unforeseen consequences you would feel the need to correct? Seriously reflect on how you will safeguard your own integrity, even when faced with an ethically ambiguous situation, potentially harsh personal consequences, or attempting to right a wrong you may have committed.)
  3. Your action plan: Write a detailed action plan for one new goal for professional and personal development (you will continue to build on the list of goals you started in your previous course). Include the following in your action plan:
    • Your specific goal for professional and personal development with an explanation as to why you selected the goal. Be sure to provide concrete and specific examples of why the goal is important, the extent to which this goal enables you to be an agent for positive social change, the personal or professional value you expect from achieving each goal, and how the goal relates to the resources you reviewed in the course.
    • At least two objectives for the goal you have identified. Provide a rationale that explains how your objectives support the goal.

Guidance on Assignment Length: Your BPPG, including the Executive Summary (which should be 2–3 paragraphs in length and no more than one page single spaced), your strategy and action plan should be 3–6 pages total (1.5–3 pages total if single spaced). Refer to the Week 8 Individual Reflection Rubric for grading elements and criteria. Your instructor will use the rubric to assess your work.. References and info will be provided.

Response #2

I need a response for this post with at least 200 words, two references (references from post below) and at least one Biblical reference.

Microsoft has been at the forefront of the technological boom for the past 25 years. With the further advancement of technology, Microsoft is still out in front as the progression of technology has gone to a whole other level. With the presence of Covid-19, there has been an increasing need for our electronic devices and computing services. Microsoft saw an uptick in business in the fall of 2019 with a 10-year contract with the Pentagon that is worth $10 billion (Greene, 2020).

Software development is at an all-time high with the high demand of dependable software and technology for survival in the business world. The pandemic has brought many challenges in how we work but it has also caused a spike in demand on how we play. Microsoft Xbox has also caused revenue to rise during these trying times. During the fiscal year, Microsoft’s revenue increased by 17 billion. It was up 14 percent from the previous year. There was an increase across the board including operating income, net income, and the stock price has been in a steady incline for not only this year, but the past 5 years.

Microsoft has been a company that has evolved over the years and found ways to re-invent themselves just like many of the other successful companies such as Amazon and Apple. The stock prices are high but there is no reason to believe that the stock prices will fall anytime soon based on the past five years in the stock market. Investing in Microsoft would be a great stock to buy. This pandemic has changed the way the world views things, as well as how things operate. Companies have spent thousands of dollars having meetings in the past that they have now found out through necessity during these trying times, can be conducted in the comfort of your own home with little to no cost. This is the technology age and it will continue to prosper and Microsoft is a company that will be right at the forefront of this movement.
