LEAN INITIATIVES AND GROWTH: AT ORLANDO METERING COMPANY

OVERVIEW

The Orlando Metering Company has been manufacturing water meters for the worldwide utilities industry for decades. Early on, OMC developed a friendly, cooperative, and supportive work environment. Even when the organization transitioned to a lean manufacturing operation that focused on working in teams, the collaborative and positive atmosphere continued. Employees felt empowered, and their contributions and suggestions were acknowledged and celebrated. However, OMC has recently lost its way. Its parent company decided to transfer the production of four product lines to the Orlando plant, and this shift has resulted in a number of challenging technical issues. Furthermore, the plant has had to double its workforce, so it has turned to temporary agencies to provide new workers. The plant’s leadership has been so consumed with resolving technical problems that they have not adequately trained the new workers, and all employees seem to have lost sight of the team-based work environment that is the hallmark of lean manufacturing. As a result, employee morale is low, turnover and absenteeism are high, and productivity is declining rapidly.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS TO ASSIGN

  1. Why do you think employee morale is low? Explain.
  2. How would you describe OMC’s culture? What caused the change in culture?
  3. What should Ed do now to reduce turnover and absenteeism?

Assessing and Managing Risk on IKEA

Keep in mind that increasing value for the firm does not necessarily  mean expanding the business. Acquiring other firms, conducting research  and development, or introducing new products and services might fall  under the umbrella of value enhancement, while in other cases it may  mean downsizing, rightsizing, or even refining the products and services  the firm offers.

In a paper of approximately 1,500 words, revisit  the strategic alternatives and financial analysis recommendations that  offer the greatest opportunities to add value to your firm and assess  the risks of each. Use the information you have learned about your  company’s business model, industry, competition, and target market in  conjunction with the feedback you received on your work in the previous  two topics to assist you in addressing the following.

  1. In the  Strategic Alternatives Assessment, you evaluated potential growth  opportunities and strategies for your firm, using a SWOT analysis to  assess the advantages and disadvantages of each. Recapitulate your  findings here in conjunction with any instructor feedback received,  identifying how you determined your proposed strategic alternative(s)  and calculated potential inhibitors to each. Expand upon your initial  proposed alternatives to include financial considerations.
  2. Throughout  the course, you have developed and submitted reports for your firm  based on information that you and your CLC group have acquired and  assessed. However, it is equally important to consider what other  information, had you been able to locate it, would have been of value in  formulating recommendations. What information are you lacking that  might assist you and your team in developing and suggesting  value-enhancing strategic alternatives? What information are you lacking  that would assist you and your team in better assessing and managing  possible risks of the proposed alternatives?
  3. When it comes to  making strategic recommendations to management, financial considerations  weigh significantly on the feasibility and viability of the available  options. Revisit the Financial Analysis assignment and, with the  incorporation of any instructor feedback received, reiterate your  findings on the financial condition and performance of the firm  respective to the risks and benefits of forming a strategic alliance,  profitability ratios, and possible value-enhancing strategies.
  4. Given  your instructor’s feedback and considering how the financial markets  have changed since you submitted your Financial Analysis assignment, how  would you refine or update your assessment of the organization’s  current performance and financial strategies?
  5. How would you use a  decision matrix to determine the risks of your suggested strategic  alternative and the potential financial implications for your company of  pursuing this alternative? Is the decision matrix an effective tool for  predicting risk? Why or why not? How does the application of the  decision matrix alter what you previously chose as the most advantageous  strategy?
  6. Utilizing a risk matrix, identify a minimum of 10  unique risks associated with the strategic alternative you believe will  provide the most significant opportunity for your firm to add value.  Choose two or three of the most critical risks and discuss their  potential impacts on your selected alternative.

Submit your risk matrix with your written response.

Philosophy Paper 2

There are 6 (specific) requirements which must be fulfilled. However, you are ultimately responsible for choosing the topic and direction of your essay. There are obviously general requirements of any argumentative paper but I will add a rubric outline for argumentative papers below.

If you muck up one of these, then expects big points off of your paper:

1. Find a movie, short story, documentary, or complex news item (not a one-page article but only investigative or in-depth pieces, check with me if you are unsure) to base your analysis around and focus your thesis.

I have given you a few suggestions: the movie “Her” for philo of mind or personal identity and “Minority Report” for free will.

2. You must present a philosophy of mind, personal identity, philosophy of religion, or free will topic. The purpose is to argue/explain, for example, a theory in the philosophy of mind or personal identity in terms of the movie “Her”. Examples: Functionalism, Substance Dualism, Memory Theory, etc… In this case, you would be arguing that the character Sam is a mind or how to interpret Sam as a person over time as a way to make the case that the theory you are advancing/argueing for is the best answer to the mind-body problem.

3. Include an objection to your view. Some possibilities:

Could there be another theory that best explains our intuitions about thought experiments in the movie/show?

Does your theory lead to some absurd consequences whether in real life or via the movie’s world?

Is there a possible way to develop a contrasting view of the OSes from the behavior of one of the characters?

4. Include discussions of the thought experiments, ideas, philosophers found in the textbook and links given to you by the prof.

5. You must include one secondary source and provide a full works-cited page. (This means citing the articles we used IN CLASS, from the research, the textbook, and EC work). This also means you SHOULD be using the course material to help make your case in addition to the secondary source from the textbook.

6. Word Minimum: Roughly 1500 -1800 words (MINIMUM). It is permissible to go over the 1800 words if needed (no excuses about not knowing you could write more to fulfill the tasks).

module 2

Module 2 Discussion – Buyer Behavior Question 2

No unread replies.No replies.

Select Group has decided to offer the first accountable care plan managed care product in a small community of 25,000 people in West Virginia. Accountable care organizations (ACOs) are a new concept, especially in this region. In conducting a consumer survey prior to the introduction of this structure, Select Group finds that attitudes toward ACOs are very negative. Some people believe they will be locked into a system if they join. Others feel this form of health care delivery is a socialistic approach to medicine. What options does Select Group have in trying to change these attitudes?

Module 2 Discussion – The Environment of Marketing Strategy Question 1

Assume you were hired to design a managed care organization targeted to baby boomers in San Antonio, Texas, a city with large Hispanic population.  How would you make this service offering unique to respond to the major trends discussed within this chapter?

Written Assignment Requirements:

  1. 12 pt. Times New Roman
  2. Double Space
  3. All margins must be one inch each
  4. Please type the question on your paper
  5. 1000 words

What environmental factors would you suggest account for (a) the company clinics that deal with employee medical problems, such as the one established by Toyota, and (b) the success of after-hours clinics and urgent-care facilities in many metropolitan areas?

Ethical Reasoning

[WLO: 3] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4]

Please read these assignment instructions before writing your paper as they contain very precise and specific instructions on both the content and format requirements. You should download the provided outlinePreview the document and use that to structure your paper, and consult the assignment guidancePreview the document and modeled examplePreview the document for additional help. Finally, before submitting your assignment please use the checklistPreview the document to ensure that you have completed all of the requirements.

Overview

This course has three written assignments that build upon one another and are designed to take you step-by-step through a process of writing a paper that identifies an ethical question, examines the context, issues, and arguments surrounding the question, and attempts to defend an answer to that question using strong moral reasoning.

In the Week 1 assignment, “Ethical Question,” you chose an ethical question, provided an introduction, a position statement and supporting reason, and an opposing position statement and supporting reason.

In the Week 3 assignment, “Applying an Ethical Theory,” you explained utilitarianism, deontology, or virtue ethics, including its core moral principle or ideal, and applied that theory to the topic by demonstrating how its principles would support a particular position on your ethical question.

In this final written assignment, you will combine what you have done in these two exercises by examining an ethical issue and defending your own position on an ethical question regarding that issue.

This final written assignment should be written in essay form with the following clearly labeled sections:

  1. Introduction
  2. Ethical Argument
  3. Explanation and Defense
  4. Objection and Response
  5. Conclusion

The paper should be between 1,300 and 1,500 words, utilize three scholarly resources, and include a title page and reference page.

Part 1: Introduction

In this section of the paper, you will begin with your ethical question, introduce the topic and paper, and close with a thesis statement.

  • The ethical question may be the same as your Week 3 written assignment (“Applying an Ethical Theory”) or a revised version of it.
  • The introduction should be revised in a way that reflects your additional thinking on the issue and question.
  • End this section with a thesis statement that states your position on the issue (the answer to the ethical question you believe is strongest) and provides a brief summary of the main ideas you will be presenting in the paper. Please see the assignment guidance for examples of thesis statements.

Place the introduction under the Part 1: Introduction heading.

Part 2: Ethical Argument

In this section of the paper, you will present the strongest argument you can in support of the position you have stated in your introduction.

  • This will be similar to the “supporting reasons” you offered in the first assignment; however, this argument should reflect your research into the key ethical issues that need to be identified and addressed, the arguments on different sides of this problem, and the theories of moral reasoning we have studied in the class (you will discuss the specific details and implications of the moral theories in the next two sections).
  • You can think of this as a summary of the main argument you would give if you were an attorney trying to convince a jury of your position.

Place this information under the Part 2: Ethical Argument heading.

Part 3: Explanation and Defense

In this section, you will explain and defend your argument by drawing on the moral theory that aligns most closely with the argument you presented in Part 2. This may be the same theory you discussed in your second assignment, but it may also be a different theory.

  • You must first explain the theory in general terms similar to how you explained a theory in your second assignment, including a brief account of the historical background of the theory and the philosopher(s) associated with it and general overview of the core moral ideal or principle of the theory, including the way it guides and constrains moral reasoning.
  • You should then clearly show how your argument represents an application of that form of moral reasoning.
  • In other words, if the argument you present in Part 2 is utilitarian, deontological, or virtue-based (teleological), you will want to explain utilitarianism, deontology, or virtue ethics in general terms, then explain how your argument from Part 2 reflects or draws upon the core principles and values of that theory. Please refer to the Week 3 assignment instructions for directions on how to explain and apply the moral theory.

Place this section under the Part 3: Explanation and Defense heading.

Part 4: Objection and Response

In this section of the paper, you will present the strongest objection you can to your argument, and briefly defend that objection by appealing to a different ethical theory than the one you focused on in Part 3.

  • Briefly explain the core moral ideal or principle of the theory and how that could be the basis of an objection to your argument. For instance, if you explained and defended your own argument by applying the principles of virtue ethics, you could raise an objection from the perspective of utilitarianism by briefly explaining the core utilitarian principle and how applying that principle could lead someone to a different conclusion than the one you are defending.
  • Next, you should respond to the objection by explaining why it is not strong enough to undermine the main argument in defense of your position.
  • See the assignment guidance for suggestions on how to effectively respond to the objection.

Place this section under the Part 4: Objection and Response heading.

Part 5: Conclusion

In this section of the paper, provide a summary of what you have done in the paper by briefly describing what you accomplished in each of the above sections.

Place this section under the Part 5: Conclusion heading.

Resource Requirement

You must use at least three scholarly resources, only one of which may be the textbook. In other words, you must use at least two scholarly resources in addition to the textbook.

Acceptable ways of using a source include providing a quotation, summary, or paraphrase; merely providing a citation, especially when it is unclear how or where the text supports your claim, is not sufficient.

If you need help with finding additional resources or are unsure about whether a particular resource will count toward the requirement, please contact your instructor.

For sources to count toward the resources requirement, they must be cited within the text of your paper and on the reference page. Sources that are listed on the references page but not cited within the paper do not count toward fulfilling the resources requirement.

In your paper,

  • Introduce the topic and paper.
  • Provide a thesis statement.
  • Present an argument in support of the position.
  • Defend the argument by explaining and applying the ethical theory that most closely aligns with the argument.
  • Present an objection to the argument by appealing to a different ethical theory.
  • Respond to the objection.
  • Provide a conclusion that describes what was accomplished in each of the sections of the paper.

The Ethical Reasoning Final Paper

  • Must be 1,300 to 1,500 words in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s APA Style  (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.resource.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted

For further assistance with the formatting and the title page, refer to APA Formatting for Word 2013 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

Application Case 1 – Aging the Pediatric Patient (Part 1)

Please review this file  download and observe how patient age is calculated, and how cohorts are created for each category of Pediatric Patient. Please go thru each of the worksheets presented as “Step 1”, “Step 2”, and so forth. Upon completion, create a Pivot Table in Step 6 which analyzes the Pediatric patient data by age cohort in Step 5. Submit the MS Excel file here.

Part 2:   Case StudyWeek 2:Defining Age Cohort Definitional Problems in anAcute Care Hospital Quality Resource DepartmentCase Background:  A 450 bed acute care hospital that was runningat a typical daily occupancy of rate of 86% performs approximately 85focused chart reviews per day, concentrating on a number of factors, including the patient’s length of stay  (LOS),  severity,  current  diagnosis, pre-operative surgical risk  factor  status, infection  status,  current  medication protocols, and a number of behavioral health indicators.During the course of developing chart review protocolsin anticipation of a focused review involving the Department of Pediatrics,  a  lively  discussion  ensued  among  the  Quality  Resource  Management (QRM) staff  as to  what constituteda “Pediatric”case.  A number of members of the team had different opinions as to which patient ageboundaries should be  used  whendesignating  a  case  to  qualify  as “Pediatric”.    Some  members felt  that  many  of  the older patients  seen within  the  Pediatric  Department should be  classified  as “adults”due  to  a  number  of  physiological  and  psychological factors,  while  other  members  of  the  team  felt  that  it  was  important,  for  reasons  of  data  consistency,  to  maintain  the traditional pediatric age cut-off point of “under age 18years”for designating pediatric patients.Data  Collection, Preparation,  and  Analysis: The  Chairman  of  the  Department  of  Pediatrics charged  those  individuals responsible  for  data  collection,  preparation,  and  analysis  to  take  an “open”and “flexible”approach  to  the  issue  of designating  which  patients  would  be  considered “pediatric”from  a  clinical  perspective  versus  from  an  administrative perspective.    In  essence,  the  Chairman  was  directing  the  team  to analyze  the datain  such  a  way  that  would  permit grouping of patients by age into multiple cohorts.  One member of the team cautioned that creating multiple definitions of “pediatric”might create confusion when conducting analysis. Conclusion:  The Quality Resource Management staff ultimately decided to create sixage cohort designations based on the patient’s age at the time of admission.   These cohorts consisted of these groupings:

Discussion

Discuss the contraceptive methods using the latest evidence-based guidelines that Karen would be medically eligible for.

Evidence-based guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) (2019) indicate that women with pre-existing medical conditions should avoid the use of hormonal contraceptives. Nevertheless, https://perfectwriterblog.com/humanities/im-working-on-a-humanities-question-and-need-an-explanation-to-help-me-learn-1/  there are various contraceptive methods, apart from condoms, which Karen is medically eligible for. The first option is using a non-hormonal intrauterine device (IUD), also known as the coil. Secondly is using a diaphragm; this is a cup-like device inserted into the vaginal canal to prevent sperm from passing through the cervix to the womb. A third option is the calendar method, whereby the patient calculates their safe days and avoids sex during ovulation (ACOG, 2019).

Identify one method that you feel would be most beneficial to Karen and discuss why you selected it.

Out of all the contraception methods discussed herein, the most beneficial for Karen is the IUD. Firstly, the American Cancer Society (2020) asserts that IUD reduces the risk of cervical cancer; this is important for Karen because she has a family history of the condition. Secondly, the IUD is non-hormonal; this is beneficial for Karen, with DVT https://www.keenessays.xyz/computer-science-homework-help/take-the-assignment-from-the-previous-week-add-at-least-twice-as-much-data-to-t/ and cardiac disease history. Thirdly, according to the case “Karen does not desire pregnancy soon,”; IUDs are effective for as long as 5-10 years.

Are there any methods that you would not recommend for Karen? Why?

There are contraception methods that are not recommended for Karen. These include combined-injectables like depo provera, hormonal implants, and combined patch/vaginal rings containing hormones like estrogen (ACOG, 2019). This is because the use of such contraceptives in women with a history of DVT and cardiac illness may increase their risk of thrombus formation or venous thrombus.
