The industry I chose to discuss this week is Aerospace more specifically the space side. The space industry has been transforming itself beginning with the launch of Sputnik in 1957. Industry activities have been driven by innovation; however, the insertion of commercial market demands have pushed momentum beginning at the Cold War. Because of this, the industry changed directions in order to “leverage new business opportunities, which reached a pivotal point in the last decade” (Preeti, 2020). The trend of removing traditional barriers and allowing commercial companies into the space realm drives innovation.

Traditional barriers prevented access to space but with removal of some tapes more and more startups, companies, and governments can launch their own spacecrafts. Smaller lesser-known companies like Planet, Hawkeye360, Spire, Capella Space, BlackSky, and Swarm have successfully raised money and launched satellites. Then there are also more known private organizations like SpaceX that entered the game in 2002. SpaceX brought technologies like the falcon 9 that can return to its launchpad after taking off, the first of its kind. Business model for each company varies from tracking radio signals and gathering radar data to imaging every inch of the Earth to communicating with internet-of-things devices. The number is going to increase over the years and redefine items that consumers use every day including items like the GPS.

DQ. 2 DAV

I chose to research biotechnology, drugs, and genetics, and more specifically biotechnology in the diagnostics and surgical sector (namely, hospital biomedical/clinical technology). R&D is at an all-time high with companies such as Siemens, GE, Phillips, Steris, Beckman Coulter, and several others.

The industry is headed in a direction toward more robotics and automation. While this reduces the need for personnel, the precision of computers and robots reduces or eliminates the possibility of human error.

One leader in robotics in the biomedical industry is a company called Intuitive. They make a machine called the da Vinci machine. it is a robotic assisted surgical device where the surgeon sits in a control center that is away from the patient. In this control center, the surgeon has detailed and enlarged views of microscopic areas of the patient. The surgeon then has controls (think joy sticks) to move the robotic arms and perform minute surgical procedures.

The benefits of using this procedure rather than conventional procedures is that the patient ends up with less scarring and has a much less possibility of an error being made. The incision is much smaller and the repair is much more detailed.

From a marketing standpoint, when a hospital has this device, they then to mention it in all advertising. It shows that the facility is innovative and is on the cutting edge of biomedical technology.

paper A

Paper A: Application of a decision making framework to an IT-related ethical issue.

This assignment is an opportunity to explore and apply a decision making framework to an IT-related ethical issue. A framework provides a methodical and systematic approach for decision making. UMGC Module 2 – Methods of Ethical Analysis (see LEO Content – Readings for week 2) describes three structured frameworks that may be used for ethical analysis, namely Reynolds Seven-Step Approach, Kidder’s Nine Steps, and Spinello’s Seven-Step Process. There are several ways described in UMGC Module 2 to systematically approach an ethical dilemma, and while each of the frameworks described has its merits, each will result in an ethical decision if straightforwardly, objectively,  and honestly applied.

In addition, consider the ethical theories described in Module 1 – Introduction to Theoretical Ethical Frameworks (see LEO Content – Readings for week 1) which help decision makers find the right balance concerning the acceptability of and justification for their actions. A separate write-up of the ethical theory that supports your decision is part of the following requirements.

For this paper, the following five elements must be addressed:

  • Describe a current IT-related ethical issue: Since this is a paper exercise, not a real-time situation, you may want to construct a brief scenario where this issue comes into play, and thus causes an ethical dilemma.  The dilemma may affect you, your family, your job, or your company; or it may be a matter of public policy or law that affects the general populace. See the list below for a list of suggested issues, which may be a source of ethical dilemmas.
  • Define a concise problem statement that is extracted from the above description or scenario. It is best if you define a specific problem caused by the dilemma, that needs a specific ethical decision to be made, that will solve the dilemma.   Be aware that if it is a matter of public policy or law, that it may require a regulatory body or congressional approval to take action to implement a solution.
  • Analyze your problem using one of the structured decision-making frameworks chosen from Module 2. Make sure that you identify the decision-making framework utilized. In addition, the steps in the decision-making framework selected must be used as major headings in the Analysis section.
  • Consider and state the impact of the decision that you made on an individual, an organization, stakeholders, customers suppliers, and the environment, as applicable!
  • State and discuss the applicable ethical theory from Module 1 that supports your decision.

Concerning your paper:

  • Prepare a minimum 3- 5 page, double-spaced paper and submit it to the LEO Assignments Module as an attached Microsoft Word file.
  • Use headings for each topic criteria
  • Provide appropriate American Psychological Association (APA) source citations for all sources you use.  In addition to critical thinking and analysis skills, your paper should reflect appropriate grammar and spelling, good organization, and proper business-writing style.
  • Include a Cover Page with your Name, the UMGC/Name of the Class, and the Title of the Paper.

For example, Kidder’s approach has nine steps, which are:

  • Recognize that there is a moral issue.
  • Determine the actor (whose moral issue is it?).
  • Gather the relevant facts.
  • Test for right-versus-wrong issues.
  • Test for right-versus-right paradigms (what sort of dilemma is this?).
  • Apply the resolution principles (ends-based, rule-based, or care-based).
  • Investigate the “trilemma” options (look for common ground or compromise).
  • Make the decision.
  • Revisit and reflect on the decision. (Kidder, 1995, p. 183-187)

Reminder: Each of the steps for whatever framework that you select must be a major heading in the Analysis section of your paper.

Here are some suggested issues for you to consider, the additional text is designed to help you flesh out the issue:

  1. Privacy on the Web: What is happening now in terms of privacy on the Web? Think about recent abuses and improvements. Describe and evaluate Web site policies, technical and privacy policy protections, and current proposals for government regulations.
  2. Personal Data Privacy Regulations in Other Countries: Report on personal data privacy regulations, Web site privacy policies, and governmental/law enforcement about access to personal data in one or more countries; e.g., the European Union.  This is especially relevant as our global economic community expands and we are more dependent on non-US clients for e-business over the Internet.
  3. Computer-Based Crimes: Discuss the most prevalent types of computer crimes, such as Phishing. Analyze why and how these can occur. Describe protective measures that might assist in preventing or mitigating these types of crimes.
  4. Government Surveillance of the Internet: The 9/11 attacks on the US in 2001 brought many new laws and permits more government surveillance of the Internet. Is this a good idea?
  5. The Digital Divide: Does it exist; what does it look like; and, what are the ethical considerations and impact?
  6. Privacy in the Workplace – Monitoring Employee Web and E-Mail Use: What are current opinions concerning the monitoring of employee computer use. What policies are employers using? Should this practice of monitoring, be authorized or not?
  7. Medical Privacy: Who owns your medical history? What is the state of current legislation to protect your health information? Is it sufficient?  There are new incentives with federal stimulus financing for health care organizations to develop and implement digital health records.
  8. Software Piracy: How many of you have ever made an unauthorized copy of software, downloaded software or music (free or for a fee), or used copyrighted information without giving proper credit or asking permission? Was this illegal or just wrong? How is this being addressed?
  9. 9. Consumer Profiling: With every purchase you make, every Web site you visit, your preferences are being profiled. What is your opinion regarding the legal authority of these organizations to collect and aggregate this data?
  10. Biometrics & Ethics: Your fingerprint, retinal-vessel image, and DNA map can exist entirely as a digital image in a computer, on a network, or in the infosphere.  What new and old ethical problems must we address?
  11. Social Networking:  What are some of the ethical issues surrounding using new social networks?  How are these now considered for business use?  What are business social communities?  Are new/different protections and security needed for these networks?
  12. Gambling in Cyberspace: Is it legal? Are there national regulations and/or licensing? What are the oversight and enforcement requirements? Are there international implications? What are the social and public health issues?
  13. Pornography in Cyberspace: For example, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling protecting as free speech computer-generated child pornography
  14. Medicine and Psychiatry in Cyberspace: Some considerations include: privacy issues; security; third-party record-keeping; electronic medical records; access to information, even by the patient (patient rights); access to information by outsiders without patient knowledge; authority to transfer and/or share information. Are there any policies proposed by professional organizations?
  15. Counterterrorism and Information Systems: Your protection versus your rights
  16. Open-source Software versus Closed-source Software: Ethical ramifications and impact on intellectual property law
  17. Creative Commons Licenses: How do they work and what are the legal and ethical impacts and concerns?
  18. Universal ID card: What is the general position of the U.S. government about issuing each individual a unique ID card? Which individual U.S. government agencies have already provided a unique ID card? What steps have been taken to include individual ID information electronically in passports? How is privacy and security provided?
  19. Video Games: Does playing video games distract from everyday responsibilities? Do video games correlate with real world violence? Why do game creators continually increase the violence of video games? What is video game addiction?
  20. Cyberbullying: What is cyberbullying and what can be done to stop it?
  21. Net Neutrality: What is the current position of the federal government and is it fair to all?

Building Information Modelling Management, Theory and Practice.

Coursework Tasks to be Completed by Students  The submission should be structured as follows:   Commence by contextualising key strategic targets across the Architectural, Engineering and  Construction (AEC) industry in relation to the use of BIM and Modern Methods of Construction.   In the main body of the report the student should make use of a range of quality academic literature  in order to explore collaborative working and the importance of effective building design  management processes on BIM-enabled projects.   Suitable conclusions should then be drawn (as informed by the literature) as how the AEC industry  can respond to current challenges and opportunities in this area.  To successfully complete this report a minimum of 20 carefully selected sources should be used to inform  the literature review. These are to be relevant peer-reviewed quality academic journal articles.  Relevant textbooks and conference papers can also be used to support the review. Web based sources  should not be used, and will not be counted as any of these 20 selected sources.  3.4 Expected Size of Submission  (e.g. typical word length, number of pages, time limit for a presentation. If there is a maximum size limit,  please specify along with the penalties for exceeding this limit).   4,000 equivalent words (excluding the references section).   Figures (diagrams, illustrations, photographs etc.) and tables are welcome but must be fully  incorporated into the submission, integrated with the text and fully explained as to why they are  exhibited. 200 words are counted for each figure/table used.   The work must form a structured and coherent whole. On the front sheet of the submission, identify  the total number of words used (excluding references section) and the number of figures/tables  used.   Penalties for exceeding this limit: If the work exceeds the allowable word limit by 10% (i.e. 300  words) then a 10% marks penalty will apply. This 10% penalty will continually be applied for any  additional text that exceed blocks of 300 words thereafter.

discussion #4 disease

Sperry poses the need for a comprehensive assessment informed by a biopsychosocial perspective when treating individuals with chronic illness. In our text, he identifies the formulation of the thirteen key markers that should be discussed with the patient during the assessment process.

These markers include:

1)       Disease progression and impact of illness on functioning

2)       Illness representation or explanatory model

3)       Adequacy of health behaviors and exposure history

4)       Early parental bond and adverse childhood experiences

5)       Personal schemas and family narratives

6)       Personality style or disorder

7)       Family competence level and style

8)       Religious and spiritual beliefs

9)       Patient resources and self-capacities

10)     Readiness for treatment and self-management capacity

11)     Adequacy of treatment relationship with previous providers

12)     Alignment between clinician-patient explanatory models and treatment goals

13)     Phase of illness

Please select one of these markers and describe why you feel it is an important aspect of the assessment process:

Imagine that you are currently practicing as a health psychologist and provide examples of the way in which you could assess this particular marker in an individual that might come to seek services from you in an effort to cope with their specific chronic illness. You may provide examples of assessment strategies or semi-structured questions for any stage of disease progression. You may also cite and share existing screening tools that you consider helpful. Feel free to endorse any of the aforementioned factors or propose a different aspect of the illness process that you feel should routinely warrant clinical attention.

ASSIGNMENT 2/24

To complete this assignment, students will select only one industry/business to review, analyze, and assess risks using the LSS tools/techniques, quantitative risk assessment, and your creative ideas. Suppose you are the operation and quality coordinator in the organization, with the current COVID-19 situation, new government with some new policies. To stimulate the overall performance, the company CEO provided a budget for each department to improve productivity of its employees/workers. The results must show at least 7% increase in outputs within the next 6 months.

Your selection can be a specific organization or overall industry, for example

Overall industry – Automotive, Pharmaceutical, Hotel and hospitality, E-commerce, Social Media, Retail, Wholesale, Education, or others.

Specific business – GM, Toyota, Ford, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Marriott International, Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, Amazon.com, Facebook, Google, Walmart, Target, Costco, or others.

The writing must include answers of these 5 items:

  1. Reviewing general information of your selection, about      150-200 words on demographic data (e.g. organization, nature of its      business, products/services, annual revenue, current situation, quality      dimension,…)
  2. Assessing risk factors –  consider your selection      and construct a risk analysis that examines the various forms of potential      risk (technical, financial, operational, perimeter, strategic risks,…)      related to the existing of the business. How would your analysis change if      your overall business’ revenue was down 5% due to the COVID-19 situation?
  3. Qualitative risk assessment – Imagine that you are a      member of a project team that has been charged to improve productivity of      your operation sections by purchasing new application/software system.      Using a qualitative risk analysis matrix, develop a risk assessment for a      project based on the following information:

Identified risk factors Likelihood

           1.   Your manager/supervisor resigned                      1.   High

           2.   Chance of economic downturn                             2.   Low

           3.   Budget cut                                                            3.   Medium

           4.   Project scope changes                                           4.   High

           5.   Poor spec. performance                                        5.   Low

Based on this information, how would you rate the consequences of each of the identified risk factors? Why? Construct the risk matrix and classify each of the risk factors in the matrix.

Tips: Using the handout – Risk Analysis (Unit Two/Supplement/Handout), pages 2-4, for guideline in drawing a simple 3×3 risk matrix with Probability and Consequences as the two axes. Depending on how you view the consequences of each of the above risks, it is possible to classify them into one of the quadrants of the qualitative risk matrix. The key is that students justify their classifications by giving a logical reason for the consequences they perceive for each risk factor, should the problem actually occur.

  1. Developing Risk Mitigation Strategies. Develop a      preliminary risk mitigation strategy for each of the risk factors      identified in Problem 2. If you were to prioritize your efforts, which      risk factors would you address first? Why?
  2. Quantitative Risk Assessment. Assume the following information:

Probability of Failure Consequences of Failure

                                      Maturity = .3                                          Cost = .1

                                      Complexity = .3                                     Schedule = .7

                                      Dependency = .5                                    Performance = .5

Calculate the overall risk factor for this project. Would you assess this level of risk as low, moderate, or high? Why?

Assignment 2: Discussion Question

Important note: Discussion questions in this course use a case study that is found in Shared Documents in the file named “Project Management Case.” It is strongly recommended that you read this case study before attempting an assignment. Also, it is mandatory that you attempt all assignment questions in the order they are presented in.

By the due date assigned, respond to the discussion question. Submit your responses to the Discussion Area. Start reviewing and responding to your classmates as early in the week as possible.

Discussion Question

Consider one of the following ethical situations that could arise when a company such as Trillo Apparel Company requests an outside contractor to perform work.

Situation 1

You need to hire contractors for the electrical work. You also know that getting the permits is going to be very difficult and my delay your project. You have a friend in the electrical business who knows an inspector that can be bribed to move your inspections to the top of the list. If you hire your friend’s company, you know you will have your inspections completed on time.

Situation 2

You need to hire inexpensive labor to build your work benches for the production floor. You have a bunch of college friends who are in need of work and the pay is good for this work. You also feel you might have more control over the workers since they are your friends. You know that your company usually uses takes bids for this type of work

Week 7 – Assignment: Choose a Research Topic

This week, you will focus on a topic of your choice and include a problem statement, theory or conceptual framework, and the annotated bibliography from your previous work. This is a draft to get feedback from your professor to complete the Signature Assignment.

The problem statement is between 250-300 words. It describes the gap in the literature or the problem found in the research. It is something that has not been solved. A problem statement is used to describe what the researcher intends to solve. This also includes what is known about the problem or what should be known about the problem. Identify who is impacted if the problem is not solved. Refer back to week 5, if needed to parallel the outline of the problem statement. Include at least one citation from your literature that supports the evidence of a problem.

The purpose statement is written to align with the problem statement. Also, in this section, you will identify the type of study such as qualitative or quantitative methodology. (Since you have not yet studied the methodology, it is in another research block course, you may use your best idea here.) Include a sentence of who the population and number of participants may be for this study. Finally, in one or two paragraphs, describe how you will maintain the confidentiality of the participants.

Assignment Instructions:

Include the following items in your draft:

Write a problem statement with no more than 250 words.

Write a purpose statement using the directions below.

Include two or three paragraphs about a theory or conceptual framework.

Add you annotated bibliography from previous work.

From the dissertation template, use the following points to write a purpose statement: Begin with a succinct purpose statement that identifies the study method, design, and overarching goal: “The purpose of this [identify research methodology] [identify research design] study is to [identify the goal of the dissertation that directly reflects and encompasses the research questions that will follow].”

  • Indicate how the study is a logical, explicit research response to the stated problem and the research questions that will follow.
  • Continue with a brief and clear step-by-step overview of how the study will be (proposal) or was (manuscript) conducted.
  • Identify the variables/constructs, materials/instrumentation, and analysis.
  • Identify the target population and sample size that will be needed (proposal) or was obtained (manuscript).

Length: 11 pages

References:  Include a minimum of seven (7) scholarly resources.

Module 1 – Session Long Project (SLP) – ACTION RESEARCH AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

For the Session Long Project in this class, you will be applying the principles of organizational development to an organization you currently work for or have worked for in the past. For this first SLP, think carefully about the background readings and how they might apply to a specific organizational situation or problem that you have experienced firsthand. Then write a 2- to 3-page paper answering the following questions:

  1. What do you think the biggest problem your current organization or one of the previous organizations you worked for faces? Why do you think management has had difficulty with this problem?
  2. Do you think this problem could be mitigated by hiring an organizational development consultant based on what you’ve read in the background materials? Why or why not? Make sure to cite some of the readings in your answer.
  3. Of the action research and organizational development steps listed in the required readings, which ones do you think would be the more challenging steps that an organizational development consultant would face coming into your organization? Explain your reasoning and cite at least one of the required background readings.

SLP Assignment Expectations

  • Answer the assignment questions directly.
  • Stay focused on the precise assignment questions; don’t go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials.
  • Make sure to use reliable and credible sources as your references. Articles published in established newspapers or business journals/magazines are preferred. If you use articles from the Internet, make sure they are from credible sources.
