Micheal

Hello Class,

For this week’s forum discussion, I chose to cover the supply chain profession.  With this being the eighth and final week of this course, I look forward to seeing the discussion posts from my classmates.  The supply chain encompasses the entire process and network of people, agencies, and commodities from initial request requisition, to aggregation of materials, to forwarding of goods and people to its necessary destination for use.  The supply chain profession sees the engagement of vehicle operators, warehouse managers, customer support, information technology, executive officers, and more, in the execution of the tasks necessary for the endeavor.   There are many factors that influence the supply chain profession at all levels.  One factor is the labor market.  The United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a seven percent job growth from 2016 to 2016 (BLS.gov, Apr 2018)  This is considered as being “fast as average.”  (BLS.gov, Apr 2018)  The Bureau also shows that a typical entry level education is a bachelor’s degree.  This makes many potential individuals wanting to enter this profession have to compete with a high level of competency and education.

Another factor is job knowledge and safety.  Many aspects have hazardous situations that would require safety and hazardous communications training for professionals to mitigate potential dangers such as lifting safety, mechanized material handling equipment operation, and hazardous materials.  Additionally, North Carolina State University lists some changes within the field.  “Changing nature of customer/supplier relationships and alliances; the growth and use of the internet to facilitate e-business; significant reductions in staffs; focus on strategic goals related to cost/value; the evolution of supply chain management as an integrated competitive business strategy, and the contribution of purchasing to this strategy; and the uncertainty brought about by 9/11 in a time when nothing can be taken for granted.”  (NCSU.egu, 2002)  Thank you.

Class,

We have arrived in the last of class and I wanted to express that it has been great working with you all these past eight weeks. The Supply Chain Profession is not an easy profession to be in. Endless hours, being able to prioritize and having a strong leadership attributes are necessities that must be present when choosing this profession.

“Despite the numerous different job classifications and titles within the supply chain profession (e.g., logistics manager, supply chain director, procurement manager, vice president of distribution, operations manager, director of global trade), these professionals all share common goals and face similar challenges” (Blanchard, p. 228, 2010).

Holding one of these positions is not an employment opportunity which is a mindless nine to five. These positions must be filled with true professionals, who invest their passion into their position. Strong leadership traits are a necessity as a lot depends on these managers to guide their staff into the right direction and give their management adequate insight and advice on how things should be. The company decision makers are depending on their subject matter expert opinions when it comes to their specific area within a supply chain. If the leadership is not present to guide and share knowledge the company usually is not able to survive for the long haul.

Not everyone is fit to work in the supply chain profession and only true professionals who are able to conduct several tasks at one time, and who are able to focus on the important issues rather than all of the issues are going to be the ones who will make a company’s supply chain a success.

4 – Organizational Teams Strategic Plan

Scenario

New Age Creations is an interior design firm that specializes in high-end home designs. The business’ customers are primarily from new home sales and turnover of existing homes. People who purchase houses are decorating the homes to fit their style. Recently, the company leadership team has noticed a slowing of business in the designing of expensive homes. Upon further market research, the team noticed that high-value home sales have slowed for new and existing homes. New Age Creations management also conducted market research on mid-level valued homes and noticed this housing market experienced dramatic sales growth.

The leadership team concludes that the upper, mid-level priced homes market is a new market that they would like to enter to increase sales and communicate to both the design and sales teams to coordinate their efforts. Leadership has communicated details about the new market strategy and the focus to guide the design, sales, and work teams.

A significant factor in developing positive organizational relationships amongst staff working in teams is effective communication for cooperating on shared decision-making to meet objectives. The design and sales teams will need to collaborate on the designs for the size and style of homes in this pricing category.

You need to create a written strategic plan for the sales and design teams to work on the new business strategy that will be communicated to the leadership team.

Instructions

Create a written strategic plan that addresses the following:

  • Why will it be important for these teams to collaborate on the new business strategy? What will the organizational impact of the teams’ collaborative work be to the new business strategy? Use examples of organizational impact and a well defined strategic plan.
  • What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of team decision-making? How can team members ensure effective decision-making- Use examples of how team members can ensure effective communication.
  • What modes of communication will the teams leverage to coordinate work and achieve team objectives?
  • Use examples to support the understanding of concepts in a well-defined strategic plan.
  • Provide attribution for credible references used in the development of content ideas following academic guidelines.
  • As always, please keep in mind who your audience is and use correct grammar and spelling.

Assignment: From Kitchen Baker to Operations Manager

Baking dog treats in her kitchen has been a simple process for Wanda to manage. She has two ovens, one sink, a refrigerator, and enough room for two people to work at the same time. However, when Wanda moves her business out of her home, she will have a commercial kitchen that can accommodate as many as six people working simultaneously. She had never thought of her business as “production” until the real estate agent who showed her the space asked how many production workers she needs to accommodate. At that point Wanda realized she would be running a production system. Even worse, she realized that she had never even visited a manufacturing facility or set foot on a real production floor. How will she ever manage this process?

Your Task

Explain the following to Wanda:

  • How can she apply principles of operations management to ensure that her business remains successful?
  • What decisions does she need to make about how her process will change from making treats in her kitchen?

  • Locate a peer-reviewed scholarly source and provide statistical data that you found surprising on the topic.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length, which should include a thorough response to each prompt. You are required to provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide full reference entries of all sources cited at the end of your response. Briefing Paper

  6-8 pages.

After the collection of data, the next step is assembling information into a draft in preparation for writing the final product. To fully assess and understand the data collected, an outline is a great format to utilize to map out your ideas and the structure of the final briefing paper. Additionally, an outline is useful in connecting concepts, ideas, and principles from the readings, relating these ideas to the data collected. In addition to honing research and writing skills, this assignment will be useful in further developing the framework for the final briefing paper.

Instructions

To prepare for this paper’s final submission, you will need to focus on the data collected through your review of articles listed in your annotated bibliography. For this assignment, you will need to create a detailed outline of your summary of the issue. You will also need to include a clear explanation of current policies. Besides, clearly outline or propose policies and state a recommendation.

Items to include are outlined as follows:

· Length of assignment: 6-8-page outline

· Format of assignment: Current Turabian Format

· Number of citations: 10 from the annotated bibliography

· Acceptable sources: scholarly articles, empirical journals, and assigned textbook readings published within the last 20 years.

MG495 Case Analysis (Executive Summary)

  • A team must select a publicly held company where financial data is readily available.  Most publicly held companies have this information readily available.  You will need at least 3 years of historical data (5 – 10 years is preferred).  A private company can be used if they provide you access to financial data.
  • Discuss the relationship, if any, between the economy and industry, and the industry and company.
  • Provide an overview of the company’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.  Please note that Strengths and Weakness are internal, Threats are external, and Opportunities tend to be a combination of internal Strengths combined with favorable industry/economy factors.  There is a difference between Opportunities and Options.
  • Use one of the readily available forecasts of the economy versus trying to develop your own economic forecasting model.  Most major industries are forecasted by the government, think tanks, and/or industry trade groups.  Use their information for your forecast of the industry.  For the company, use historical sales data and perform regression analysis.  Regression analysis for most publicly held companies will provide strong R squared and R values to be used in forecasting future sales.  In those cases where R squared and R values are too low for forecasting purposes, you will have to develop your own methodology to forecast sales.  Be sure and explain how you arrive at a forecasted sales value.
  • An abbreviated Pro-forma Income Statement and Balance Sheet is needed.  You do no need to encompass all the variables but rather show sales, cost of goods sold or cost of services provides, and fixed costs.  Other noteworthy items can be included if they are significant.
  • Draw conclusions based on your forecast and analysis of the company including the challenges faced by the company and industry.
