ENG 103 DB #1 & Response #1

Discussion Board # 1 – Each thread is to be 250–300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge.

Answer Question: Because technical communication is for your job and not for school, is it easier to write than academic writing?

Response #1 –  Each reply must be 250–300 words.

Christy Adams Discussion Board Forum 1:
I feel that technical writing is easier than academic writing because the author of the document, memo, etc. would be writing about a subject on which they’d spent time each day. It would most likely pertain to something, like a project, that one would have extensive knowledge of already and would know what is needed in the document that would convey what they needed to convey to get to the reader.

If its a grant, for example, then the writer would know what money was needed to fund the project. If it was for some type of disciplinary action, then most likely it would be the manager who was taking the appropriate steps toward improving the employee and so on.

When writing for academic purposes, the writer wants to please the teacher, or professor by including all of the correct information that was asked for, writing in the correct format, citing, and references, all while speaking about a topic that was chosen by someone else. One hopes to get it all right by technically putting all of those things in the paper, but the student can never be sure that it’s exactly what the teacher is looking for until it has been graded.

So, for me, it’s much harder to please a teacher with trying to figure out what they are looking for in a paper than with typing a technical paper for your office.

Week 2 – Assignment 2

Industry Competitor Ratios: Appendix D [WLOs: 2, 3] [CLOs: 1, 2]

Ratios are rarely used in isolation. For a good understanding of a company’s financial performance, it is important to evaluate the company’s ratios relative to the industry in which it operates. For this assignment, you will use Mergent through the university library to download the most recent year of financial ratios for top competitors in your publicly traded company’s industry. You will download the competitor financial ratios into Excel. Once you have these competitor financial ratios in Excel, you will save that Excel sheet as a PDF and submit it to Waypoint.

Prepare:

Prior to beginning work on this assignment,

(Links to an external site.)BUS401 | Retrieving Industry Ratios Using Mergent (Links to an external site.)

Construct Appendix D:

Using the Mergent database in the university library, and following the instructions in the BUS401 | Retrieving Industry Ratios Using Mergent (Links to an external site.) video from above complete the following:

  • Retrieve the industry competitor ratios for the most recent year.
  • Download the competitor ratios you retrieved as an Excel document.
  • Calculate the average ratio for the industry for each ratio.
  • Format the Excel spreadsheet according to the video instructions.
  • Then save competitor ratios as a PDF. Title this PDF file “Appendix D” and submit it to Waypoint.

The Company Ratios: Appendix D,

  • Must contain industry competitor ratios for the most recent year.
  • Must include the calculations for the average ratio for the industry for each ratio.

Book Review Discussion

  • Read the article: “The Pearl in the Shell: Author’s Notes in Multicultural Children’s Literature,” found in the Reading Teacher, Volume 55, Number 5 February 2002. Use the Online Library to access it. Use the quotation marks around the title in your search if you experience difficulties in locating the article.
  • You should have already located a Young Adult book that deals with diversity. (It was on the notices page for several weeks and it was assigned at the end of the last lesson.) There are MANY at your public library, school library and in bookstores. I have given you extra time for this assignment so READ THE BOOK!!!
  • Name the book title in the subject line of your posting.
  • Include the title and author of the book in your posting.
  • Compose well thought out and descriptive paragraph summary of the book. Include the diversity aspect of the book.
  • Compose a second paragraph for the reaction to the book.
  • In a third paragraph, describe how you might include this book in a lesson. Incorporate the material suggested from “The Pearl in the Shell: Author’s Notes in Multicultural Children’s Literature” article. Be sure to include the appropriate grade level and lesson topic.

For those of you who missed the original explanation, here it is again.

  • Read the Young Adult Book dealing with diversity. For this course, a Young Adult book is defined as a chapter book appropriate for grades 5 – 12. This book may be fiction or non-fiction, but may not be a textbook. Good resources include the public library, the librarian at your field experience school, and the internet. Application of Role Theory to a Case Study (Tiffanni Bradley)

This week, you will use role theory to apply to your chosen case study. In other words, your theoretical orientation—or lens—is role theory as you analyze the case study.

Use the same case study that you chose in Week 2. (Remember, you will be using this same case study throughout the entire course). Use the “Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet to help you dissect the theory. You do not need to submit this handout. It is a tool for you to use to dissect the theory, and then you can employ the information in the table to complete your assignment.

To prepare:

  • Review and focus on the same case study that you used in Week 2.
  • Review the websites and guides for developing PowerPoint skills found in the Learning Resources.
  • Use Personal Capture to record the PPT slides on your screen and your audio as you present the information. You will then use Kaltura Media to upload this recording to the assignment link.

Submit a narrated PowerPoint presentation using Kaltura Media that includes 11 to 12 slides.

  • Each slide should be written using bullet points, meaning no long paragraphs of written text should be in the slides.
  • The recorded audio takes the place of any written paragraphs, while the bullet points provide context and cues for the audience to follow along).

Your presentation should address the following:

  • Identify the presenting problem for the case study you selected. (Remember the presenting problem has to be framed from the perspective of role theory. For example, the presenting problem can be framed within the context of role functioning).
  • Identify all the relevant roles assumed by the client.
  • Analyze the social expectations and social and cultural norms revolving around the role, social position, and role scripts of one of the roles assumed by the client.
  • Explain the role and social position of the social worker in working with the client in the case study.
  • Describe how the role(s) and social position(s) assumed by the social worker will influence the relationship between the social worker and the client.
  • Identify three assessment questions that are guided by role theory that you will ask the client to better understand the problem.
  • Identify and describe two interventions that are aligned with the presenting problem and role theory.
  • Identify one outcome that you would measure if you were to evaluate one of the interventions you would implement to determine if the intervention is effective.
  • Evaluate one advantage and one limitation in using role theory in understanding the case.

Be sure to:

  • Identify and correctly reference the case study you have chosen.
  • Use literature to support your claims.
  • Use APA formatting and style.
  • Include the reference list on the last slide.

Friday

Prepare a 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation, with speaker notes, that examines the significance of an organization’s culture and values. For the presentation of your PowerPoint, use Loom to create a voice-over or a video. Refer to the Topic Materials for additional guidance on recording your presentation with Loom. Include an additional slide for the Loom link at the beginning, and an additional slide for References at the end.

1.  Outline the purpose of an organization’s mission, vision, and values.

2.  Explain why an organization’s mission, vision, and values are significant to nurse engagement and patient outcomes.

3.  Explain what factors lead to conflict in a professional practice. Describe how organizational values and culture can influence the way conflict is addressed.

4.  Discuss effective strategies for resolving workplace conflict and encouraging interprofessional collaboration.

5.  Discuss how organizational needs and the culture of health care influence organizational outcomes. Describe how these relate to health promotion and disease prevention from a community health perspective.

While APA style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Refer to the LopesWrite Technical Support articles for assistance.

How are state judges selected in Texas?  Discuss two different methods used in other states for selecting judges. What are the arguments for each of the selection methods you discussed?  Do you think that judges should be elected or appointed?  Explain your reasoning.   How informed do you think the public is about judicial elections and judicial candidates?  If you were voting for a judge, would you research the candidates and their qualifications or would you vote based on party affiliation?

How has Texas ranked over the last 10 years in the percent of people without health insurance when compared to other states?  (Refer to Census Bureau data.)  Has the percentage of people without health insurance been increasing or decreasing?  What are some of the explanations for the differences between the current uninsured rate in Texas and the rate in other states?  Do you think this issue should be a priority for Texas legislators?  Why or why not?  Was this issue addressed in the most recent legislative session and if so, what was the outcome?  (Note: The Texas Tribune is a good resource for information on public policy issues in Texas).
