Operational excellence – Mid term

The general structure and scope of operations involves the structural, functional, and environmental aspects that affects an organization’s decisions in achieving optimum results with the integration of its objectives and constrains.Operations management is generally concerned with the planning, organizing and supervising of an organization’s daily activities in the context of production, manufacturing and the provision of services in a way that creates optimal output from various input sources (Slack, Brandon-Jones & Johnston, 2016). It is considered as delivery-focused where necessary improvements are made by the company for higher profitability (Khanna, 2015). These changes are required to align with the organization’s strategic goals, thus making it necessary for them to be preceded by profound analysis and measurements of the current organizational operations. To determine if a company is doing well, its operation performance is measured against standards of effectiveness, efficiency, and environmental responsibility such as regulatory compliance and productivity (Slack, Brandon-Jones & Johnston, 2016). Additionally, the company’s objectives are put into consideration including areas that the company is trying to improve in a bid to meet its strategies.

According to Khann (2015) an operational strategy includes long-range plans for the design and use of the operations function to support the overall business strategy based on the mission it has set out to ensure future organizational success. These may include short-term operations activities and decisions that are consistent with the long-term strategic intentions and their overall contribution to the company’s overall strategy and competitive advantage (Slack, Brandon-Jones & Johnston, 2016). The operational strategy can be inclusive of new products and services that focus on developing the latest knowledge in the areas of operations that require particular emphasis. This means while seeking to improve their overall performance, the idea of improving an organization’s service delivery and creating innovative products and methods to establish new paths in business performance is integral. Over the past six weeks we discussed operation management, operation performance, operation strategy, product and service innovation & the structure and scope of operation. Which of these principles can you apply at your workplace? Select one or two and provide examples.

PRIMARY RESOURCE ASSIGNMENT

Overview:  History is the study of the past, and primary resources are windows into the past as they describe events at the time of their occurrences. The United States in 1850 was at a crossroads and seemed at times to be on the verge of falling apart due to the ongoing controversy over sectionalism. By using primary sources, students can look at how Americans viewed the sectional crisis facing their country in the 1850s

Instructions:  From the perspective of a literate and informed American (Southern planter, New England abolitionist, Texan rancher, Midwestern farmer, Northern shopkeeper, European immigrant, Free Black, etc) describe the situation of the United States in the 1850s. What is holding the country together? What is threatening to tear the United States apart? How serious is the South’s threat to leave the Union? Is the Compromise of 1850 a victory for sectionalism or nationalism? Will the Union survive?

Special Notes: You are not limited to the above personas when you write your essay, but you should write from the perspective of a typical person from the region you pick. For instance, if you choose to write as a wealthy Southern planter, it would be as inappropriate to take an antislavery stance just as it would be for a New Englander to actively support slavery. Use common sense based on what you have been taught in class. You are writing from the perspective of an American living in 1850. You do NOT know what will happen over the next fifteen years. Also note that moral standards were different in the mid-19th century than they are in the early 21st century – your essay should reflect the standards at the time.

Required format:

• Font – Use either Times New Roman (12pt), Calibri (11pt), or Arial (11pt).

 • Margins – 1 inch margins all around

• Page numbers starting with 1 at the bottom and centered on each page after the cover sheet.

• Double-space, do not include extra spacing between paragraphs.

 • Reviews should be at least three full pages. There is no maximum length. The cover sheet and works cited do not count towards the three page minimum.

• Name, “Primary Resource Assignment” followed by your persona, course information (class and section number), and date should be single spaced, center aligned, and placed in middle of the cover sheet. Example: Jack D. Andersen Primary Resource Assignment: Southern Farmer HIST 1301-21300 October 28, 2018

• The essay should be organized into multiple paragraphs including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

• All citations, including the works cited page, should be in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition. MLA, APA, or any other format is not acceptable.

• Please refer to the Writing Guide handout for advice on style

nursing stereotypes

Case Study, Chapter 23, Professional Identity and ImageNursing care is frequently perceived by the public as simple and unskilled. Many male nurses live in fear of how their caring actions might be interpreted. Many nurses hold that stereotypes about the profession are true, just as the general public does. Public identity and image has been a struggle for nurses for a long time. The greater public clearly does not understand what professional nursing is all about, and the nursing profession has done a poor job of correcting long-standing, historically inaccurate stereotypes.

1. What are the common nursing stereotypes?

2. What was the role of the Center for Nursing Advocacy? Discuss the role of Truth about Nursing in addressing inaccurate or negative portrayals of nursing in the media and the process they use to raise public and professional awareness of the issues surrounding nursing public image?

3. What are some of the ways of changing nursing’s image in the public eye?

4. One of the most important strategies needed to change nursing’s image is to change the image of nursing in the mind of the image makers. What are some of the key ways for nurses to interact with the media?

CMIS 102 6383 Introduction to Problem Solving and Algorithm Design

The final project involves writing a Python program to determine the body-mass index of a collection of six individuals. Your program should include a list of six names. Using a for loop, it should successively prompt the user for the height in inches and weight in pounds of each individual. Each prompt should include the name of the individual whose height and weight is to be input. It should call a function that accepts the height and weight as parameters and returns the body mass index for that individual using the formula weight × 703 / height2. That body mass index should then be appended to an array. Using a second loop it should traverse the array of body mass indices and call another function that accepts the body mass index as a parameter and returns whether the individual is underweight, normal weight or overweight. The number of individuals in each category should be counted and the number in each of those categories should be displayed. You should decide on the names of the six individuals and the thresholds used for categorization.

Your program should include the pseudocode used for your design in the comments. Document the thresholds you chose for under weight and over weight in your comments as well.

Statistical Literacy Discussion

This video discusses sampling in the context of how estimates of population parameters are obtained. It refers to the What Is an Average? (Links to an external site.) video, where they obtained an “average of 1.89 feet per person” using a sample of a group of playground-bound kids plus a one-legged man who was asked to show up. They concluded that the sample was a bad one and that random sampling would be a better way of obtaining a representative sample to be confident that the sample statistic is a good estimate of the population parameter.

Respond to one of the following options in your initial post, citing at least one specific credible source in support. Question on credible sources? See the resource Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Source (Links to an external site.)

Option 1

  • Identify three ways professionals use statistics in their fields.
  • Go deeper with one, and provide a specific example of how a manger in your field might organize a study and leverage the results to positively influence customer or public perception.
  • Remember to cite your sources.

Option 2: Magazines often report surveys giving statistics such as, “63% of women expect the man to pay on the first date.”

  • Determine whether these are random samples.
  • Briefly discuss in the context of a specific example.
  • Remember to cite your sources.

Option 3

  • Discuss whether all good samples are random.
  • Briefly elaborate in the context of a specific example related to your field.
  • Remember to cite your sources.

Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length.

Leadership Theories in Practice6053

A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.

However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations.

Yet, how well are these theories put to practice? In this Discussion, you will examine formal leadership theories. You will compare these theories to behaviors you have observed firsthand and discuss their effectiveness in impacting your organization.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and examine the leadership theories and behaviors introduced.
  • Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
  • Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.

Post two key insights you had from the scholarly resources you selected. Describe a leader whom you have seen use such behaviors and skills, or a situation where you have seen these behaviors and skills used in practice. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain to what extent these skills were effective and how their practice impacted the workplace.

REPEAT MISTAKES: Mistakes that have been previously identified are still being made.  Once a mistake has been identified, then please do not continue making the same mistake in subsequent papers. Please do not repeat the same mistakes. (3 points).

HANGING INDENTS: The references on the reference page should be formatted with “hanging indents.” The first line of a reference should not be indented, but the second and subsequent lines should be. It’s called a “hanging indent.” If you would like to see a sample hanging indent, then please click on this link and scroll down to page 3: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HxbY6yCGtNTch6uupDvEMYdFSrAJuVA6/view?usp=sharing  (1 point).

General Comments: This assignment is supposed to produce an edited rough draft of the body of a proposed research paper. It should present a clear focus on the problems – and provide a tentative solution(s). The references should be scholarly sources to support ideas that are presented. It should present an introduction to the problem (a thesis statement), a hypothesis, research questions, an annotated bibliography and a consideration of ethical issues, as they relate to an Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Mentor Interview

Interview a leader of your choice who has experience with creating and managing budgets, and write a 3-5 page analysis of your findings from the interview.

Introduction

Note: Complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.

Business acumen, including financial management skills, is a key competency for nurse leaders, and a primary responsibility for many is the development and management of operating and capital budgets.

For this assessment, you will speak with a leader of your choice who has experience with creating and managing budgets, learn about that person’s approach to budget management, and consider techniques or strategies you may emulate when you create and manage budgets.

Nurse leaders must be well-versed in the fundamentals of health care economics. A firm understanding of these concepts is essential in order to examine national trends and diverse health care organizations. At the organizational level, health care economics operate in a manner very similar to other competitive industries and businesses.

Within any organization, regardless of size, nurse leaders must understand the purpose and complexity of building a solid budget. Nurse leaders must be able to recognize the organizational or unit goals and then be adept and competent in the planning, designing, and defending a budget to meet those needs.

Note: Complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.

Preparation

You are the nurse manager of a new urgent care clinic, and one of your first tasks is to prepare next year’s operating budget. Like many nurses, you have had little or no direct experience with the budgeting process and realize that financial management is not one of your strengths as a leader. Consequently, you have decided that you need to reach out for help from someone in the facility with budgeting experience and financial management expertise who can offer you help and insight.

Note: Remember that you can submit all of, or a portion of, your draft analysis to Smarthinking for feedback, before you submit the final version for this assessment. However, be mindful of the turnaround time of 24–48 hours for receiving feedback, if you plan on using this free service.

As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.

Capital and operating budgets each play a major role in the financial expenditures of nursing units.

  • What is the purpose of each type of budget?
  • How does managing these two types of budgets differ?
  • What financial management techniques are common to both types?

Reflect on your experience with either type of budget.

  • How have one or the other of these two budgets affected the provision of care in your organization or unit?
