Cultural Activity Report

Visit a museum or art gallery before the end of Week 9. If you are unable to get to a museum or gallery within your area, then a “create your own museum” assignment can be completed in its place (see Option 2 details, below). The museum or gallery should have content that fits our course well. Here is some information about the museum visit in person:

  • It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
  • If there is a traveling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things.
  • The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or the number of works of art that you see.
  • The most rewarding experiences can come from finding 5–10 works of art by 5–10 different artists who intrigue you, and then considering those works in leisurely contemplation. Most museums have benches where you can sit and study a particular piece.
Option 1: Visiting a Museum

Write a 2–3 page report, 500–750 words that describes your experience.

  1. Clearly identify the event location, date attended and your initial reaction upon arriving at the museum or gallery.
  2. Provide specific information and a description of at least five pieces by a minimum of five different artists.
  3. Provide a summary of the pieces and describe your overall reaction after viewing them.
  4. Describe the role of museum founder and curator.
  5. Use the class text as a reference (additional sources are fine, but not necessary unless required by your content). Your report should include connections you make between things observed in your activity and things learned in the course and text.
Option 2: Create and Curate Your Own Art Museum

For this paper, you will select and curate 5–10 works of art to include in your own art museum. Use the text and online sources to help you find these works of art. This assignment is an alternative option for visiting a museum or art gallery. After researching, answer the following questions by writing a 2–3 page report, 750–800 words, that describes your experience.

  • Select 5–10 works of art from at least five artists from different time periods discussed in the text, the 18th century to modern times.
  • Provide a brief description of each piece and a picture if possible, explaining why you chose each piece.
  • Describe where and how you would display each piece, whether individually or grouped together.
  • Describe your role as museum founder and curator. Give your museum a name and a location.

Use at least the class text as a reference. Additional sources are fine but not necessary unless required by your content. Your report should include connections you make between things observed in your activity and things learned in the course and text.

Note: The same rubric will be used for both options. In one section of the rubric, you are graded on your discussion of the role of the founder and curator of the museum. For Option 1, you will likely find this information on the museum web page or museum materials. For Option 2, the roles of museum founder and curator are held by you.

Additional Requirements

  • Paper must be typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman font, 12 points, with one-inch margins on all sides. Formatting of citations and references must follow Strayer Writing Standards (SWS) [PDF]  . Check with your professor for any additional instructions. (Note: Students can find Strayer Writing Standards materials located in the Additional Resources section of their Student Center within their course shell for reference.)
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Describe historical works of art, including their displays and locations.
  • Review the rubric in the Course Guide to see how your assignment will be graded on answer quality, logic and organization of the paper, and language and writing skills.

The Quest for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties

The Quest for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

As you read in the discussion introduction, civil liberties and civil rights are salient rights enshrined by the U.S. Constitution, subsequent congressional legislation, executive actions, and judicial decisions. Whereas many times civil liberties and civil rights are used interchangeably, the two terms are distinct.

Many civil liberties and civil rights are either directly written into the U.S. Constitution or later legislated by an Act of Congress. That said, many of America’s important civil liberties and civil rights are the result of Supreme Court decisions.

With this in mind, in the Unit 6 Assignment, you will write an essay analyzing the judicial intersection of civil rights and civil liberties.

Directions: Write a 400 word, APA-formatted expository essay that addresses the following:

  • Identify the distinction between civil liberties and civil rights.
  • Identify where civil liberties are addressed within the U.S. Constitution.
  • Identify where civil rights are addressed within the U.S. Constitution.
  • Select two Supreme Court cases from the Supreme Court Case List: one case that concerns civil liberties and one case that concerns civil rights.
  • For both selected Supreme Court cases:
    • Identify the historical circumstances of the Supreme Court Case.
      • Speculate as to why the Supreme Court justices decided to hear this case.
    • Explain the Supreme Court’s decision.
      • Explain how this Supreme Court case discussed the U.S. Constitution, subsequent federal and state laws, and/or lower court judicial decisions.
      • How did this Supreme Court case affect the legislative, executive, and/or judicial branches?
    • Evaluate the resulting impact of the Supreme Court case on U.S. society.
      • Do you agree or disagree with the Supreme Court decision?
    • Evaluate the resulting impact of the Supreme Court case on you.
      • Why did the Supreme Court case interest you?
      • How does this Supreme Court case affect you and society?
  • Support your analysis with information from the text and at least two additional academic source.

Your paper should also meet the following requirements:

  • APA format.
    • Title page.
    • Reference page.
    • APA citations.
    • Double spaced sentences.
    • 12-point Times New Roman font.
  • Standard English grammar conventions.
    • Correct grammar.
    • Correct punctuation and spelling.
    • Logical, well-ordered sentences.

Optional Resources

Application: Predicting and Preventing Terrorist Attacks

U.S. and foreign intelligence organizations have averted a number of terrorist plots, including several directed at the United States. Nevertheless, it is not good enough to foil most terrorist attacks; intelligence organizations are expected to foil all of them. Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States has reformed its intelligence organizations to make them better able to predict terrorist activity. These reforms include the establishment of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to coordinate intelligence activities, as well as the National Counter Terrorism Center to develop counterterrorism strategy and planning. Although reforms and new legislative actions can help provide a means to prevent terrorist attacks, the most important component to counterterrorism efforts is having accurate and timely intelligence. There are many challenges inherent to collecting data on terrorists and terrorist organizations. For instance, the extensive amount of data collected can make it difficult to distinguish useful information from irrelevant information. It is important to be aware of and consistently address challenges like this, because they can make predicting and preventing terrorist attacks very difficult.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the online article “Strategic Choices, Intelligence Challenges.” Think about challenges intelligence officials encounter.
  • Read the article “Spies and Bureaucrats: Getting Intel Right.” Consider the difficulty related to monitoring and understanding intelligence data.
  • Review the assigned pages in Chapter 8 of the text Introduction to Homeland Security. Focus on intelligence challenges as well as post-9/11 reforms that have addressed these challenges.
  • Review the articles “Homeland Security: Progress in Implementing 9/11 Commission Recommendations,” “Final Report on 9/11 Commission Recommendations,” and “Legislation Related to the Attacks of September 11, 2001.” Reflect on the extent to which post-9/11 reforms have addressed the intelligence challenges related to forecasting and preventing terrorist attacks.
  • Think about how the difficulty of gathering intelligence affects the forecasting and prevention of terrorist attacks.
  • Consider the extent to which post-9/11 reforms have addressed the intelligence challenges to forecasting and preventing terrorist attacks.

The assignment: (1–2 pages)

  • Explain why it is so difficult to forecast and prevent terrorist attacks. Be sure to include brief descriptions of some of the major challenges.
  • Explain the extent to which post-9/11 reforms have addressed the intelligence challenges to forecasting and preventing terrorist attacks. Be specific and use examples to support your explanation.

Support your Application with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the Learning Resources for this course.

ORG 6499 Week 6 Final Paper

Cultural Perspectives

The goal of this assignment is to integrate cultural nuances, expectations, and perspectives into a final paper. You will present a current diversity-related situation or dilemma; compare and contrast the cultures involved in the situation; provide a historical perspective; and analyze the contributing factors to the current state of the situation. You will then interpret the effects of the situation on the cultures involved, provide evidence in favor of and opposed to each side of the situation. Finally, you will assess your beliefs and perspectives regarding the situation or dilemma and identify strategies for building inclusion by synthesizing the varying perspectives.

Instructions:

This final paper will build upon the written assignment from Week 5. Based on the feedback received from the Paper Review (submitted in Week 5), revise your Week 5 written assignment. The final paper should be 2800-3500 words (8-10 pages) in length, double-spaced, and include a title page and references page.

Address complete responses to the following:

  1. Identify a diversity situation or cultural dilemma that is prevalent in today’s society that involves more than one cultural group:
    1. What is the diversity situation or cultural dilemma that you chose?
    2. Provide an analysis of the topic, including an historical perspective and the current day situation.
    3. Explain why this is a topic of interest in general, and to you in particular.
  2. Compare and contrast the different cultural groups involved:
    1. What cultural groups are involved in this situation or dilemma?
    2. What stereotypes and biases are associated with each of these cultural groups?
    3. What privileges and power are associated with each of these cultural groups?
  3. Determine a personal position regarding the topic:
    1. Identify and present your own attitudes, beliefs, cultural norms, stereotypes, or biases that you may have, or had in the past, regarding this topic.
    2. Present at least one argument supporting the perspective or each cultural group involved with the topic.
  4. How can this situation or dilemma be addressed moving forward with a mutually beneficial outcome?

Utilize 5 to 7 resources, including resources provided throughout the course, to support your arguments. Make sure to gather evidence and present persuasive, well-reasoned arguments regarding your topic, and consider all perspectives and opinions.

Process Flowchart Drawing

For this assignment, you will practice drawing a process flowchart. A process flowchart provides a visual representation of the steps in a process. Constructing a flowchart is often one of the first activities of a process improvement effort because it provides a clear understanding of the process and flow of resources, helps to identify non-value-added operations, and facilitates teamwork and communication (the flow of information and people).

To complete this assignment, refer to problem 3 in the “Problems and Activities” section at the end of Chapter 7 in your text.

Specifically, be sure to address the following:

  • Draw a flowchart for a process of interest to you, such as a quick oil change service, a factory process you might have worked in, ordering a pizza, renting a car or truck, buying products on the internet, or applying for an automobile loan. You must include a legend to accompany your process flowchart. See the examples in Chapter 7 of your text for examples of flow charts.
  • Identify the points where something (people, information) waits for service or is held in work-in-process inventory, the estimated time to accomplish each activity in the process, and the total flow time. Remember that a decision symbol must have at least two direction arrows to accompany it.
  • Evaluate how well the process works and what might be done to improve it.

To successfully complete this assignment, view the Process Flowchart Drawing Assignment Rubric document.

Week 5 – Final Project

Mini Equity Research Report [WLO: 4] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4]

Many investment banks employ analysts to write equity research reports on public companies to advise their clients on their stock investments. In many cases, an initial equity research report is 20 to 50 pages long! For this class, you will focus on only three of the many important sections typically included in an equity research report. Thankfully, your Mini Equity Research Report will be much shorter than those published by investment banks!

In Week 1, you chose a publicly traded company to use throughout this class for the Mini Equity Research Report. In the first section of the Mini Equity Research Report, you evaluate the historical financial performance of the company (Week 1). In the second section of the Mini Equity Research Report, you evaluate the company’s performance using common financial ratios, and you compare the company to the competitor’s performance with the same financial ratios (Week 2). Finally, in Sections 3 and 4 of the report, you develop a value for the company’s stock and compare your value to the current market price of the stock (Weeks 3 and 4). Based on the analysis you present in these four sections, you will develop your recommendation to buy, hold, or sell the stock of this company.

It is very rare for one company to have only positive facts. Most companies have some good facts and some weak facts. In Sections 1 and 2 of the Mini Equity Research Report, you will analyze a variety of financial data for your selected company. As the equity analyst, it is your responsibility to combine the positive and negative facts into one recommendation (buy, hold, or sell). It is important to consider the importance of each fact and acknowledge that there is no perfect answer. Your recommendation should be based on the strength of the positive facts while recognizing the risks from the negative facts.

This week, you will write the introduction (including your stock recommendation) and the conclusion of the Mini Equity Research Report. In addition, you will revise the four sections from the first four weeks of class and combine them into this Mini Equity Research Report. Finally, you will submit your final Appendices A, B, C, and D with the Mini Equity Research Report.

Prepare:

Prior to beginning work on this final project,

  • Complete the Week 5 – Learning Activity: Understanding Cost of Capital.

    • State the name of the company and a brief description of what it does.
    • State the current market price per share and total market capitalization of the company.
    • State two key historical financial performance facts about your company (you can ascertain this information from your Week 1 – Assignment 3, Section 1: Financial Statement Analysis).
      • Categorize the overall financial performance as strong, neutral, or weak.
      • Justify your assessment based on the key facts.
    • Summarize (briefly) the ratio performance of the company.
