Unit 4 Discussion – Am I Normal?

Unit 4 Discussion – Am I Normal?

Instructions:

The average height for all males is 69.3 inches, with a standard deviation of 2.8 inches. For females, the average height is 64 inches, and the standard deviation is 2.8.  These are population values. For this week’s discussion, you will calculate a z-score based on your own height and determine whether your score is within the 95% normal range or if it is out of that range and considered unusual.

  • Measure your height as precisely as possible to a tenth of an inch. For example, 5’2 ¼” would be 62.3 inches tall.
  • Calculate the z-score based on population values for males or females.  Use the formula:  z= (x-µ)/σ where x is your height in inches.
  • Calculate the normal range by creating the interval that is within 2 standard deviations of the population mean.  Multiply the population standard deviation by 2 and then add/subtract from the population mean.

In your discussion post, include the following, based on your calculations.

  • Is your height within the normal range?  Is this what you expected?
  • Would your height be considered unusual?  Why or why not.
  • Have you encountered any challenges based on your height?  For example, someone who is shorter or taller may have difficulty finding pants that are an appropriate length.
  • How is the concept of normality used in your field?  For example, a patient’s blood pressure is compared to a normal range of values, and a financial planner may check the “average” return of a stock.
  • How does knowing what is usual help people and corporations and government organizations plan?  For example, how do airplane manufacturers use the normal height to design aircraft seating?

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

The topic of your essay needs to be a global societal problem from the following list:

  • Climate change
  • Pollution
  • Religious conflict and violence
  • Rise of artificial intelligence
  • Lack of education
  • Unemployment and lack of economic opportunity
  • Government accountability and corruption
  • Food and water security
  • International drug trafficking
  • Poverty and income inequality

Reflect: Based on the topic that you have chosen, you will need to use critical thinking skills to thoroughly understand how this topic can be a global societal problem and determine some logical solutions to the problem.

Write: This Final Paper, an argumentative essay, will present research relating the critical thinker to the modern, globalized world. In this assignment, you need to address the items below in separate sections with new headings for each.

In your paper,

  • Identify the global societal problem within the introductory paragraph.
  • Describe background information on how that problem developed or came into existence.
    • Show why this is a societal problem.
    • Provide perspectives from multiple disciplines or populations so that you fully represent what different parts of society have to say about this issue.
  • Construct an argument supporting your proposed solutions, considering multiple disciplines or populations so that your solution shows that multiple parts of society will benefit from this solution.
    • Provide evidence from multiple scholarly sources as evidence that your proposed solution is viable.
  • Interpret statistical data from at least three peer-reviewed scholarly sources within your argument.
    • Discuss the validity, reliability, and any biases.
    • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of these sources, pointing out limitations of current research and attempting to indicate areas for future research. (You may even use visual representations such as graphs or charts to explain statistics from sources.)
  • Evaluate the ethical outcomes that result from your solution.
    • Provide at least one positive ethical outcome as well as at least one negative ethical outcome that could result from your solution.
    • Explain at least two ethical issues related to each of those outcomes. (It is important to consider all of society.)
  • Develop a conclusion for the last paragraphs of the essay, starting with rephrasing your thesis statement and then presenting the major points of the topic and how they support your argument. Current event study

  Business-Level Strategy :

In order to bring current examples of strategic issues and problems into the class, each student will prepare a current event analysis. The analysis should be drawn from material in the business press and must deal with a topic within the last 12 months. The article/material should highlight the strategic issues facing a particular firm or industry and should be directly related to specific topics of this course. Your presentation should include the following points:

  1. A very brief review of the key facts of the story.
  2. Identification and explanation of the key course concepts, tools, topics that this report relates to.
  3. Your analysis/evaluation of the actions or situations with respect to the relevant topic.
  4. One question for the class discussion

Each presenter should submit your analysis report by 5 PM of the day before the presentation.

The length of the outline should be one to two pages. Be sure to attach a link/copy of the article and any other materials from which the outline is derived.

Each presentation should be about 3 minutes. You may be randomly selected to do an oral presentation.

The grading template for the individual case presentation is as below:

Academic Integrity

 Prepare:

 Reflect:

  • Reflect on all the concepts from the catalog and course textbook and how they might help you to become a better scholar and professional.
  • Consider how you can apply your understanding of ethical use of information to the materials you see and read daily.
  • Think about how the online writing or graphic you selected uses information unethically.

 Write:

  • Identify two key elements of the catalog’s Academic Integrity (Links to an external site.) and Academic Dishonesty (Links to an external site.) sections and describe how you feel these elements are important to you as a scholar and professional.
  • Explain how the online writing or graphic you chose uses information unethically. In your explanation, be sure to refer to the two key elements you identified in the previous step.
  • Develop a strategy for how you, as a scholar, could avoid making this same ethical mistake?

Your initial post must be at least 350 words and address all of the prompt’s elements.

You must cite and reference any sources that you use in your posts, including your textbook or any other sources of information that you use. Please refer to the Writing Center’s Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.) and Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.) for help with citing and referencing your sources.

Read this article to frame this week’s discussion.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas:

Part 1

Having experienced a robust debate discussion on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and trends (SWOTT) analysis and strategic planning for a particular fast-food franchise, it is time to shift gears a bit and consider the competition in the fast-food industry. Read this article to frame this week’s discussion. Complete the following:

www.ibtimes.com/best-restaurants-usa-chick-fil-trumps-competition-mcdonalds-falls-out-favor-1990232

  • Identify 1 or 2 other major competitors in the fast-food industry, and describe their sources of competitive advantage.
  • Discuss a current issue that this industry faces. It could be favorable or unfavorable to the industry.
  • Which of the major competitors has the strongest competitive advantage and ability to overcome the barriers presented by the current issues identified and why?

Part 2: Based on the first initial of your last name:

  • First initial M-Z: provide an argument ‘FOR’ the success of the fast-food franchise’s competitors. Submit your position by posting in the Unit 2 Debate forum, under the ‘FOR’ topic.
  • First initial A-L: provide an argument ‘AGAINST’ the ability of the competition to overtake fast-food franchise. Submit your position by posting in the Unit 2 Debate forum, under the ‘AGAINST’ topic.

In both considerations, provide research that supports your assertions.

ASSIGNMENT 1: DEALING WITH DIVERSITY IN AMERICA FROM RECONSTRUCTION THROUGH THE 1920’s

Researching and References in Your Paper

List of Sources for Your Paper

Grading Rubric

After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. Reconstruction was partly a period of military occupation of the south by the northern victors. Former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.

Possible position—in each case you can take the pro or con position:

  1. The Lost Cause narrative of the South effectively sabotaged and influenced racial policy in the US for most of the post-Civil War period. (or you can take the position that it did not)
  2. Political policies in the decades after the Civil War generally promoted diversity and “the melting pot” despite the strong prejudices of a few. (or you can take the position that political policies did not)
  3. Reform movements between 1865 and 1930, like the Progressives and the agrarian populists, generally led the way to increased democracy. (or you can take the position that these movements did not)

After giving general consideration to your readings so far and any general research, select one of the positions above as your position—your thesis. (Sometimes after doing more thorough research, you might choose the reverse position. This happens with critical thinking and inquiry. Your final paper might end up taking a different position than you originally envisioned.). Organize your paper as follows, handling these issues:

  • The position you choose (from the list above)—or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
  • To support your position, use three specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1930. You may narrowly focus on race or gender or immigrant status, or you may use examples relevant to all categories.
  • Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
  • Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession?

Length:
The paper should be 500-to-750 words in length. This normally means 3-to-4 pages for the body of the paper. (The title page and References page do not count in these calculations.) Double-space between lines. Format instructions are below.

Research and References:
You must use a MINIMUM of three sources; the Schultz textbook must be one of them. Your other two sources should be drawn from the list provided below. This is guided research, not open-ended Googling. You will have an alphabetized list of Reference entries at the end, using APA format. You will have short, APA-style in-text citations appropriately placed in the body of the paper; these in-text citations will match the References listed at the end. Except as your instructor might direct, don’t use other sources for your paper than those listed here. (Of course, for “starter research” you can read many sources.)

mod 3

Your textbook mentions daycare/childcare in a couple of sections (you’ll read about it next week as well).  After you’ve read all the reading for this week, answer the following questions. Don’t make this a political response (“I like . . . don’t like childcare”) but use it as an example to pull together and apply core concepts from the two chapters for the week.

Divide your answer into three sections (use a heading for each section)

1. What would be necessary in a childcare setting to stimulate full development during infancy and toddler hood? Think of physical/motor, cognitive, language, personality and sociocultural development. Don’t write a book but pick out main points and make it clear that you are applying text content.

2. Based on the chapters’ content, what could go wrong in development because of a daycare setting? What would be the optimum daycare environment to complete development?

3. What would you as a parent contribute to the development of your child that daycare can’t?

In your answer, make sure you address all of the questions asked and draw in text material that applies (cite correctly per APA)

Benchmark – Patient’s Spiritual Needs: Case Analysis

In addition to the topic study materials, use the chart you completed and questions you answered in the Topic 3 about “Case Study: Healing and Autonomy” as the basis for your responses in this assignment.

Answer the following questions about a patient’s spiritual needs in light of the Christian worldview.

  1. In 200-250 words, respond to the following: Should the physician allow Mike to continue making decisions that seem to him to be irrational and harmful to James, or would that mean a disrespect of a patient’s autonomy? Explain your rationale.
  2. In 400-500 words, respond to the following: How ought the Christian think about sickness and health? How should a Christian think about medical intervention? What should Mike as a Christian do? How should he reason about trusting God and treating James in relation to what is truly honoring the principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence in James’s care?
  3. In 200-250 words, respond to the following: How would a spiritual needs assessment help the physician assist Mike determine appropriate interventions for James and for his family or others involved in his care?

Remember to support your responses with the topic study materials.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

present-sl 1 (repost)

For the SLP this session, you will be taking a close look at a company of your choice. You are free to choose any company you want as long as it is publicly traded on one of the major stock market exchanges such as NYSE or NASDAQ. This could be a company that you personally are interested in investing in, or a company whose product you buy, or one that you’ve read about in the news recently and would like to know more about. Do some research on this company, including recent articles. Also, look up the company on Google Finance. This will give you a wealth of information including stock prices over the last month, year, five years, etc., along with other information such as the beta or whether or not the company is profitable.

Once you have chosen a company and have done some initial research on it, write a 2- to 3-page paper discussing the following items:

  1. Give a brief description of the company and why you find it interesting.
  2. What is the beta of this company’s stock? Based on the magnitude of the beta, do you think it is low risk, high risk, or somewhere in between?
  3. Now look at recent stock price movements. What is the highest price the stock has been over the last year? The lowest price over the last year? Look at the five-year pattern as well. Based on what you see, what does this tell you about the riskiness of the stock?
  4. Look at some other companies in the same industry as your chosen company. How do they compare in terms of beta and other measures of riskiness? Would you prefer to invest in your chosen company, or do some of its competitors seem like a better bet?

SLP Assignment Expectations

  • Answer the assignment questions directly.
  • Stay focused on the precise assignment questions. Do not go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials.
  • For computational problems, make sure to show your work and explain your steps.
