Discussion: External Factors Impacting an Organization-6070-wk2D

Last week, you explored how systems theory and the ecological perspective emphasize the interaction between a human services organization and its environment. Any change in one part of the system effects change in another part of the system. Because organizations are not immune to their environment, local, national, and global events affect them.

Social workers in administrative roles must be able to identify and analyze the external factors that affect the function of the human services organizations for which they work. Though you may apply leadership and management skills as you assume an administrative position, you may also be able to repurpose many of the assessment skills you use in clinical practice for macro social work. Just as you gather information about a client and develop strategies for treatment at a micro level, so too, at a macro level, you gather and analyze information about a situation or program and identify appropriate strategies that will support positive organizational functioning.

For this Discussion, you address the Phoenix House case study in the Social Work Case Studies: Concentration Year text.

Post( 2 to 3 pages)  an analysis of the supervisor’s role in the Phoenix House case study and identify leadership skills that might help the supervisor resolve the issue. Identify which aspect of this situation would be most challenging for you if you were the supervisor. Finally, explain how you would use leadership skills to proceed if you were the supervisor.

Do not copy the prompt, write so that you are answering the question in an essay format. Use the prompt to help you write to the topic.

Prompt 1:
Does any president deserve credit for an economic boom or recession? Who is more instrumental in influencing the economy—the president or the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board?

Prompt 2:
Many people have argued that we should privatize much of government—that is, turn over to the private sector such traditional governmental activities as running prisons, Social Security, public broadcasting, and even public schools. Is this a good idea? What programs, if any, should be privatized? What are the relative disadvantages in privatization?

Prompt 3:
If you had to choose between having a strong economy and a weak military or having a weak economy and a strong military, which would they choose and why?

Prompt 4:
The themes of democracy, equality, and liberty are emphasized in the textbook. Do you have a better understanding of those terms today than when they started this course? Do they think the United States has a moral responsibility to spread democracy throughout the world? If so, how should it be done? How could Americans export their strengths (such as freedom) without exporting some of our weaknesses (such as low voter turnout)?

8-1 Assignment: Next Steps

Scenario

The funding pitch went extremely well, and you just received word that your idea for the new product/service has been approved. In fact, senior management sent a memo, company-wide, announcing the project.

One line in the memo really caught your attention: “We are eager to see the project to completion and the many other product offerings to come from this initiative.”

You reach out to the project manager (PM) and are told that, typically, senior management expects to see product/service extensions or some type of next steps stemming from an original product. This could include different versions of the product/service, such as cheaper or premium versions, new targeted customers, and more. The PM also adds that senior management will look for contingency planning to protect the funding for the project.

Prompt

For your business continuity plan, consider your next steps, including project improvements and how to mitigate risk to the project to protect the product investment. To accomplish this, you must leverage employee and customer feedback on the new product/service. Additionally, research the market and use a PESTLE analysis to examine if any external factor could affect your new product offering.

Specifically, your plan must address the following criteria:

  • Business continuity plan: Outline a basic business continuity plan for your business that identifies key business areas and critical functions as well as identifies at least one measure for recovering or maintaining critical business operations in case of an emergency. Include how you will ensure that this plan is followed.
  • Post-launch stage: Propose new ideas for the post-launch stage, including one idea for a product/service improvement you plan to implement after the initial launch, and one idea for increasing your customer base or engagement after the initial launch.
  • Feedback loops: Explain how you will implement feedback loops for your product or service.
  • PESTLE analysis: Use PESTLE analysis to identify at least one external risk factor that may affect the project. Then provide a solution or contingency plan for mitigating that risk.

Guidelines for Submission

Submission must be a 1- to 2-page Word document. Any sources cited should use APA formatting.

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

To Prepare:

  • Identify two      to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that      evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work      environments.
  • Reflect on      the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you      selected for review.
  • Reflect on      your results of the CliftonStrengths Assessment, and consider how the      results relate to your leadership traits.
  • Download your      Signature Theme Report to submit for this Assignment.

The Assignment (2-3 pages):

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:

  • A description      of your core values.
  • A personal      mission/vision statement.
  • An analysis      of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your      profile
  • A description      of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen.
  • A development      plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you      selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal      vision. Be specific and provide examples.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Employment-at-Will Doctrine

The employment-at-will doctrine is a complex issue with several advantages and disadvantages: the advantages include faster termination of labor contracts, efficient use of human resources, and emphasis on the performance and merit of an employee; and the disadvantages include the potential for discriminatory employment practices in the workplace, low employee morale arising from relying on misguided attitudes to employment contracts; and greater legal risk. The doctrine offers employers total contractual freedom in the absence of exceptions: a factor that reduces or eliminates negotiations with an employee when terminating an employment contract. Under the doctrine, employers can achieve assignment help efficient utilization of human resources by firing unproductive employees in a straightforward manner and avoid delays. The doctrine also helps employers to focus on merit as opposed to ranks.

The disadvantages have major implications for stakeholders in the labor force. The potential for discriminatory practices such as firing employees due to older age suggests the doctrine undermines inclusiveness in the workplace. Some get help with homework attitudes associated with the doctrine might hamper employee morale and overall productivity (Coggburn et al., 2010). An example is the perception by employees that the employer is not considerate when the organization’s culture is dominated by the feared statement— “You are fired!” Some states have exceptions to the doctrine with significant implications for various employment scenarios (Gertz, 2017). An employer might face legal action for breaching the exceptions. Such exceptions underscore the limitations of the employment-at-will doctrine.
