ECE 405 WEEK 2 ASSIGNMENT-CHILDREN & FAMILIES IN A DIVERSE SOCIETY

Culturally Relevant, Developmentally Appropriate Lesson Plan

Early childhood educators and administrators play an important role in the development of culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate curricula. As discussed in Chapter 3, the concept of culturally relevant, anti-bias instruction includes planning lessons that are relevant to the children and families in your program. For inspiration, read the article Reading Your Way to a Culturally Responsive Classroom (Links to an external site.). Using the required Lesson Plan Template (Links to an external site.), create two multicultural lessons that you could conduct as an early childhood professional based on the developmental level of your choice:

  • Infant/toddler (must be activity-based)
  • Preschool (can be literature- or activity-based)
  • Early elementary (must be literature-based)

It is required that you use the Lesson Plan Template to complete this portion of your assignment. It is suggested that you utilize the Early Childhood and Child Development: Lesson Plan Handbook download as a guide for how to effectively plan this lesson.

Film Review

Instructions

The Extra Credit Film Review is your opportunity to earn extra credit by evaluating a feature film or documentary, applying ideas and information from class to popular media.  A good review must be written in a clear, concise narrative that is free of typographical errors, misspellings, and grammatical difficulties. When starting, it is useful to keep in mind that you should “read” the film rather than simply “watch” it. You should plan to be an active participant rather than a passive viewer. This exercise is not for couch potatoes! Be prepared to analyze, interpret, and understand the meaning of the film in addition to being entertained.You will need to use evidence from the film – such as quoting a passage or describing a particular scene. You need to have a strong grasp on what scenes are most important in relationship to the major theme of the film. Those scenes will be described accurately and with adequate detail.Your film review should seek to analyze and interpret rather than merely describe the plot. The review should seek to understand the argument and perspective of the film and how they are conveyed in its narrative and assemblage of characters, images, scenes, interviews, etc. You should evaluate the film’s effectiveness in presenting these elements and note what worked well or what is missing. Why did the director, actress, or cinematographer choose to approach their subject in this particular way? Why is their approach particularly effective (or ineffective)? What is the perspective of the filmmaker? Can you identify an argument or specific story that they are trying to tell?  Good reviews will uncover these perspectives and show how the filmmakers present them and why they are or are not effective. It is also important to pay attention to the historical details of each film. Do they match up with what you’ve learned in this course? Are facts and events being misrepresented or left out? This will help you determine what choices the filmmakers had to make and how they shape the story for the purposes of popular entertainment. Note: historically inaccurate films are not necessarily bad films given that they are trying to entertain as much as educate viewers.

Film Selection

Choosing an appropriate film is the first step towards successfully completing this assignment. The film must be relevant to American History before 1877.  You can not review one of the required documentaries. When you have a film in mind, you should email to get approval/permission before proceeding. This will ensure that you have chosen a suitable film.

Formatting

Your film review should be 4 pages, double-spaces, size 12 font with 1-inch margins. You need not cite any sources, but be sure to clearly identify which film you are reviewing at the top of the page.

Theoretical Frameworks

            The two academic journal articles by authors L. Connelly and H. Green gave me more incite regarding the nature of theoretical frameworks and their purpose for giving a research study direction or an identifiable outcome. The incorporation of a theoretical or conceptual framework is part of a research study, such as the use of Grounded theory. An inductive method in which, theory generation comes from data collection and analysis. However, some researchers may utilize theories in order to link findings together and make them meaningful (Green, 2014).

            The lack of research comparison for nurse practitioner education and clinical training has not defined any prevalent or common themes/theories. Some qualitative studies regarding nurse practitioner education models referenced the work of Martha Rogers, a pioneer in a Unitarian concept of nursing. Rogers influenced conceptual thoughts that the participatory process is emphasized for learning and success of the nurse-patient relationship. Nurse practitioners require sophisticated education, expansive skillsets, clinical/diagnostic reasoning experience and develop a broader scope of nursing practice. A recent outcome-based study on NP education revealed a insufficient amount of theoretical models (Wood, 2020). Thus, the conceptual map below should illustrate the basic use of Grounded theory to compare qualitative research to support a generalizable hypothesis for the most effective NP clinical education model, based competency and confidence.

Theoretical frameworks are the basis for nursing theory.  When considering the theories that are pertinent to the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), the theories that stand out are Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory and Roy’s adaptation theory.  With both theories, the basis for consideration is that a patient with poorly managed diabetes develops a life-threatening complication of diabetic ketoacidosis, which requires focused detailed care to holistically treat the patient and address each complication.  When reviewing the articles chosen for the research proposal, author Connelly (2014), warns that “theory should not be added to a study because the researcher was told in school that a theory is needed for a research study.” (p. 187).  Theories should fit the research ideas, and often must be added as the research is conducted.  Author, Helen Green (2014) adds that she suggests that a researcher analyze his or her data before drawing any conclusions in reference to theories.  While none of the articles chosen for this project mention theories in the body of their works, it is reasonable to infer which theories such as Orem’s self-care deficit theory and Roy’s adaptation theory could be applied to each of the articles.

Economics plays a significant role in global health issues. In general, wealthier countries are healthier countries (Markle, et al., 2013). It is unclear whether increased wealth or improved health leads is the driver of the relationship or if there is a third undiscovered factor (Markle, et al., 2013). It is clear that there is some causal relationship between wealth and health which is positive (Markle, et al., 2013). Several global health initiatives address this relationship in the framework of their goals (CDC, 2021). Whether it is the millennium goals, sustainable development goals, or the CDC’s own global strategy, improving economics is key to creating better health outcomes around the world (CDC, 2021).

            In this context my research took me to the CDC’s global health strategy. There I found several goals outlined which address global health issues. Specifically, the CDC has outline three main goals addressing Health Security, health Impact, and Public health science leadership (CDC, 2021). Under each goal are several sub goals pertaining to the goal category. Relevant to my discussion is objective 2.1 which reads, ‘Reduce the morbidity and mortality of high burden diseases and conditions’ (CDC, 2021).  High burden diseases have an enormous economic impact globally, particularly in poor and developing nations (Zhang, et al., 2020). Several diseases meet the criteria of ‘high burden’ diseases such as HIV and Malaria. However, I chose to discuss Tuberculosis (TB).

            TB is a well characterized disease that impacts countries on a widespread scale. While there have been improvements through initiatives such as the MDG and SDG, TB remains a troubling global issue (Zhang, et al., 2020). 10 million people globally are infected with TB and 1.6 million die each year from the disease (Zhang, et al., 2020). Nearly 95% of these infections occur in developing countries (Markle, et al., 2013). Additonally, TB affects primarily working age individuals (15 – 54), where infection means 20% – 30% loss of yearly wages due to months of treatment and recovery (Markle, et al., 2013). Furthermore, those who die from the disease leave an estimated 15 year loss of income (Markle, et al., 2013). TB is interlinked with poverty as crowded and unsanitary living conditions are significant risk factors for infection (Markle, et al., 2013). Conversely, those infected are often forced into poverty through the sale of assets which is necessary to pay for treatment (Markle, et al., 2013). As stated before many of the initiatives have seen some success in combating TB and reducing the overall disease burden but more work is needed in order to help developing countries with this issue (Zhang, et al., 2020).

IT Development Week 4

Assignment Details

The Alset Corporation wants to begin marketing electric vehicles (EVs) to customers in the nation of Climatonia. Because the company is brand new, models and options are very limited. The user can only select from one of three types of models, and the only available option is an extra charging cable. Your job is to write a program in Java that will allow employees to see the configurations that are currently available for purchase.

Alset EVs come in three types:
Type 1: Rear wheel drive, small battery pack (short range)
Type 2: Rear wheel drive, medium battery pack (medium range)
Type 3: All wheel drive, large battery pack (long range)

All cars feature four doors and come with a charging cable. Type 1 vehicles are painted green and have no other options. Type 2 vehicles are painted blue and have GPS navigation. Type 3 vehicles are painted red, have GPS navigation, and also have a sunroof.

After meeting with the client, the design team determined the following custom class requirements for this program:

A class called Alset with the following:

  • A property called numDoors (integer) with a value of 4
  • A property called chargeCable (integer) with a value of 1
  • A property called paintColor (String) with a value of Green
  • A property called freeCharge (String) with a value of No
  • A method called displayInfo() that prints each of these properties on screen like this example: “Number of doors: 4”

A class called Type1 with the following:

  • Inherits from Alset class
  • This model does not have any additional features

A class called Type2 with the following:

  • Inherits from Alset class
  • A String property called gpsNav with a value of Yes
  • A method that overrides displayInfo(), adding a line to report the gpsNav property

A class called Type3 with the following:

  • Inherits from Alset class
  • A String property called gpsNav with a value of Yes
  • A String property called sunroof with a value of Yes
  • A method that overrides displayInfo(), adding lines to report the gpsNav and sunroof properties

When the program runs, present the user with a simple explanation of the program (one sentence), followed by a menu that asks them to enter 1 for Type 1, 2 for Type 2, or 3 for Type 3. Use the Scanner class to process input and use IF/ELSE statements to handle their choice. Once the choice has been made, instantiate a member of the appropriate class, set the correct paint color (if type 2 or 3), then execute the displayInfo() method to display the properties of the vehicle on screen. Once the information has been displayed, the program should end.

Write code comments in both the project class and each of the custom classes to document your program. In your custom classes, use JavaDoc comments to document the features of the class.

NOTE: The paint color may not be set within the Type2 or Type3 classes.

NOTE: This program must be submitted as a NetBeans project in a ZIP. Separate files or code are not acceptable.

Assembly assignment

A valid password consists of up to 7 characters and must contain one lowercase letter, at one uppercase letter, and one digit from 0-9. You are a security consultant for company XYZ. Your job is to assess the security of their password protected network. To enter their network, the user must pass the password checker. This is accomplished by calling a function and passing into the function a password string:

int check_password(char *passwd);

check_password returns a 7-digit integer of 0s and 1s to indicate which character was correct (0 to indicate a character was incorrect, 1 to indicate it is correct, and 2 to indicate it was not used). If the password entered is “aB2” and the passwd is “a11”, then check_password returns the integer 2222100. If passwd entered is “ab2”, then check_password returns the integer 2222101.

Your assignment is to write an assembly function “hack_password” that will find the secret password stored in “check_password” by iterating through all possible combinations of a-z, A-Z, and 0-9 according to password rule given above and calling the function check_password to determine when the return value is all 1’s and 2’s (e.g., 2211111, 1111111, 2222111, etc…). Note that the correct password decoder returns indicator that a character was not used as well. hack_password will print out the correct password.

You may write the main driver in C as follow:

int main()

{

hack_password();

return 0;

}

Article Critique

Locate and review a scholarly article found in a peer – reviewed journal related to HR recruiting, unions, labor relations, or international human resources management. In peer – reviewed journals, the articles were reviewed by other professionals in the field to ensure the accuracy and quality of the articles, which is ideal when writing an article critique.

Research tip : When researching using the databases, you can limit your search to only peer – reviewed articles. To do this, look for the phrase “limit results,” and select “peer -reviewed articles.”

There is a minimum requirement of 500 words for the article critique.

1. Format your critique in APA style.

2. Begin with an introduction that defines the subject of your critique and your point of view. You will first need to identify and explain the author’s ideas. Include specific passages that support your description of the author’s

point of view.

3. Take into consideration how you would approach a recruiting program for your company based on the author’s ideas on the subject matter.

4. What challenges would you face if your company were a global conglomerate?

5. Defend your point of view by raising specific issues or aspects of the argument. Offer your own opinion. Explain what you think about the argument. Describe several points with which you agree or disagree.

6. Explain how the passages support your opinion.

7. Conclude your critique by summarizing your argument and re – emphasizing your opinion.

8. For each of the points you mention, include specific passages from the text (you may summarize, quote, or paraphrase, being sure to include proper in – text citations) that provide evidence for your point of view.

Potential Benefits of Using Big Data as Part of a Clinical System

Health care systems use an abundance of resources to collect big data. Big data can be collected from electronic medical records (EMR), imaging, public records, pharmaceutical research, patient portals, wearable devices, and more (Shanthagiri, 2014). Several app developers are deploying beneficial apps to assist patient to manage their care, locate providers and improve their health (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2014). Not only can these apps provide analytical information to the patient profiles they can assist patients in making preventative care or lifestyle changes, find support prevention initiatives, identifying/detecting diseases in early stages, and provide more patient specific goals (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2014). Big data that can be extracted from patients’ wearable devices and personal apps can assist clinicians to track their lifestyles and compare them on a larger scale across populations with or without similar lifestyles and geographical locations.

Potential Risks/Challenges of Using Big Data as Part of a Clinical System

 There are several challenges when it comes to big data extracting. The one that correlates with the patient app that is linked with their wearable device is the risk of data security and most importantly who owns the data (Shanthagiri, 2014). Is it the patient, the generators of the app, the clinicians, the information technology department that is extracting the data? Though raw data information needs to be extracted to create new knowledge, and ultimately wisdom (Laureate Education, 2018) it cannot always be done due to legal reasons. Determining who owns the data is crucial and should be included in the acknowledgments and allow a release of patient’s data when accepting and downloading the app when checking the “I Agree to” check boxes. If information, such as the data, may not be extracted if it is not included or else there could be legal complications if the patient did not consent to release their information. Therefore, a lawsuit could occur. Lastly, being able to deal with and understand big data can be challenging and difficult (Thew, 2016), so creating an app that is user friendly and easy to exact usable data will be important.

Strategy to Mitigate the Challenges/Risks of Using Big Data

            With challenges there are always strategies to attempt to mitigate the challenges and risks when using big data. As I previously stated there are risks with security when apps and personal data is imported into systems. A way to assist with security holes or breeches is to be cautious and be cognizant in the beginning stages of designing the programs, because if you do not start with big data security from the start, you will get bite when you least expect it (Bekker, 2018). Additionally, when creating an app or a recourse for patients to utilize that will track patient data be sure to include an acknowledgment that states that data will be extracted and utilized to track their health and obtain large scale data from their records. This will decrease the chances of lawsuits and additionally inform patients that this data is not just theirs but the apps owners and whomever they may sell or share their data with.
