  • YOU must post your word count at the end of your discussion and the word count at the end of your reply.  Your references cannot be included in your word count.

Ajibola: cultural competence

As with all areas of the social work process, cultural competence is essential when engaging and assessing a child’s concerns. Being culturally competent includes understanding the unique needs of your client and asking how those needs can be fulfilled. Using an empowerment perspective treating clients as experts on their lives and their needs is essential. Not only does this establish your commitment to being culturally sensitive and aware, but it will enhance the therapeutic relationship. While it is essential to learn and master social work skills and techniques to be a successful practitioner, another significant indicator of a successful intervention is the relationship a social worker builds with his or her client. Some research suggests that the quality of the therapeutic relationship will account for 30% of the clinical outcome of the treatment (Miller, Duncan, and Hubble, 2005, as stated in Walsh, 2010, p. 7). Exhibiting a dedication to learning about a client’s culture, history, and current environmental factors exemplifies a social worker’s desire to build that client–worker bond.

For this Assignment, read the case study for Claudia and find two to three scholarly articles on social issues surrounding immigrant families.

By Day 7

In a 2- to 4-page paper, explain how the literature informs you about Claudia and her family when assessing her situation.

  • Describe two social issues related to the course-specific case study for Claudia that inform a culturally competent social worker.
  • Describe culturally competent strategies you might use to assess the needs of children.
  • Describe the types of data you would collect from Claudia and her family in order to best serve them.
  • Identify other resources that may offer you further information about Claudia’s case.
  • Create an eco-map to represent Claudia’s situation. Describe how the ecological perspective of assessment influenced how the social worker interacted with Claudia.
  • Describe how the social worker in the case used a strengths perspective and multiple tools in her assessment of Claudia. Explain how those factors contributed to the therapeutic relationship with Claudia and her family.

Assignment 2/ World Civilization

Part of what we will try to establish in this course are connections that tie events that are often centuries and continents apart.  Think of it as big picture over time.

I would like you to reflect upon the possible connections that would tie the rise of Genghis (Chinggis) Khan to the era of intense spiritual and intellectual upheaval and questioning that preceded what came to be known as the Protestant Reformation over two centuries later in Europe. The Mongol expansion sparked a series of events that might provide us with at least one piece of the puzzle to explain what led society to question everything it had more or less quietly accepted before.  (I stress, this is a possible explanation of some of the many factors). Very specifically, I am asking you to consider disease as the particular engine of change here.

In essence I am asking you to follow the domino pieces.  Some of the domino pieces include the Mongol conquests, Mongol Empire, Trade, Plague, Depletion of Monastic Orders, Expanded Charity Requirements…. Making the correct connections and linkages and expressing them well is crucial. I am asking you to follow one particular argument  focused mostly on disease, so although there are many other interesting factors (knowledge transfers and the like) please focus on disease.

In other words try to provide a fleshed out narrative that could explain the connections between these seemingly unconnected events (fleshed out refers to the need to provide some level of detail on each event and a clear explanation of the connections – please be sure to establish a timeline and to provide dates.)

Notice that there is already an argument inherent to this prompt.  You do not need to create and original argument. Part of the exercise here is to see how well you can succinctly express this argument in your thesis statement.

Instructions:

To answer this question you will want to use the Power Points, the “Three Days in October 1630” and the “Siege of Caffa” articles. Please be sure to cite. DO NOT use arguments from outside sources. I expect this to be typed, proofed, edited and polished.  Double space, use 12 size font and employ regular margins (1 inch).  You should be able to answer this in no more than 4 pages.

Send me or your TAs any questions you might have and we will do our best to answer them.

There are a few issues I would like to elaborate on in order to dispel any possible confusion.

Assignment II – Elaboration

  1. This particular assignment is NOT about the Protestant Reformation itself – that topic we will be covering later on in the semester – but about some of the many possible precursors to the Reformation.
  2. When you are asked to look at possible connections between the rise of Genghis Khan and the changes in Europe, I am not asking for a direct connection!! The Mongol unification gave rise to a certain set of events.  Those then set other events off, which in turn set off yet others until we finally have the events that I have referred to as possible precursors to the Reformation (Those things that caused people to question the Church and so on and so forth.) That is what I am asking you to discuss and explain. The events leading to the preconditions for a movement of intellectual and social revolt (so to speak.)
  3. The articles we read should be useful since if you draw the right information from it you can describe the effects of the plague and how it affected society, to support the argument that this was a time of chaos and fear and so on a so forth…Be sure to review the lecture notes carefully when appropriate.
  4. Please use Chicago Manual of Style referencing style – simple guides readily available online. You may also want to use our library resources: Citations & Plagiarism (Links to an external site.)

Describe one evidence-based strategy for leading emergency preparedness.

The global COVID-19 pandemic presented specific challenges to several areas worldwide, including hot spots like New York City, which suffered over 22 000 deaths. As a result, new innovative strategies were created to include resource allocation of emergency workers. Specialty providers from other practice settings such as Neurosurgery, Radiology, Bariatric surgery, and General surgery were deployed to work at alternative sites, including mobile field hospitals. It is important to note that the deployed staff received the appropriate onboarding/training. Their practices received ongoing support and services, including telemedicine, to stay connected with their patients during their absence (Amos, et al., 2020). During a disaster, it is critical to the mission to determine the right resources are being used to ensure safety and mitigate further sentinel events.

Identify one evidence-based strategy for shaping healthcare system outcomes in a disaster.

Hanefeld et al. (2018) wrote people respond in different ways to disasters, and the sudden shock and response can determine the outcomes. One of the best strategies for shaping healthcare system outcomes in a disaster is to build a level of resistance from what individuals have learned from a previous crisis. It is integral to understand the overall capacity and abilities a system has in place to respond. For instance, the financial, political, information, and planning systems can independently influence if the response to the disaster is a success or not (Hanefeld, 2018). Building resistance can be achieved when each healthcare system strives to use each crisis as an opportunity to improve their responses in preparation for future disasters.

Examine the disaster risks for your local community. Identify two priority concerns. Describe the significance of these issues of concern.

The two disaster risks identified for the state of Alaska are earthquakes plus extreme cold and blizzards. According to the University of Alaska (2021), Alaska experiences over 20,000 earthquakes annually, more than any other state. It is estimated that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 to 8 occurs yearly and 8+ on average every 13 years. The significant damage that can happen is costly due to poor infrastructure in some areas-especially remote villages. When there is an earthquake, tsunamis can be a concern depending on the time of the year and if people live near the coastline, which many do for sustenance purposes. Another disaster risk for Alaska is the long and harsh winters that create hazardous conditions such as white-out road conditions and avalanches. Unprepared people can be stuck for hours to days before help arrives and suffer frostbite, loss of limb, and possibly loss of life.

Identify one professional organization active in emergency preparedness or disaster response. Describe the services provided.

The American Red Cross (ARC) is a well-known non-profit organization that utilizes its volunteers to respond and provide relief to communities affected by local, state, and international disasters. In addition, the ARC offers Basic Life Support (BLS), First Aid, and many other training opportunities and certifications. The ARC also provides invaluable support for military families in need and assists with notifying service members of family emergencies when deployed overseas or in remote locations. Plus, therapy and other essential services to active duty, veterans, and military families (ARC, 2021).

Essay #4

Background:   As we read in Herbert Hoover’s “Rugged Individualism” Campaign Speech, the United States has been founded on the idea of rugged individualism and personal liberty. Yet, in Luis Rodriguez’s Always Running, we saw times when Rodriguez tried to bring about social change, often with the help of others. At the end of the day, though, it was Rodriguez who ultimately brought about change in his own life and left his past life in gangs behind.Social progress in the United States, like the more small-scale successes shown in Always Running, was also generally won with the help of many different people and groups.  In the short documentary films “The March on Washington: How the Movement Began” and “The March on Washington: The Spirit of the Day,” both by TIME, as well as March: Book 2, one of three books in John Lewis’ March Trilogy, we saw how an event led by a relatively small group of people could bring about great social change in the United States: the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  Additionally, in the short documentary film “Sal Castro and the 1968 East LA Walkouts,” we saw the impact of Sal Castro and his students here in Los Angeles.  However, when reflecting back on the historical impact of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and the 1968 East LA Walkouts, many people often focus on the impact of one individual rather than the numerous people who participated. [For further context: Merriam-Webster defines rugged individualism as “the practice or advocacy of individualism in social and economic relations emphasizing personal liberty and independence, self-reliance, resourcefulness, self-direction of the individual, and free competition in enterprise,” or a system in which the individual is stressed.  It defines collectivism as “emphasis on collective rather than individual action or identity,” or a group/groups of people is stressed instead of the individual.]Prompt:  Respond to the following using Always Running, at least two of the other readings or films from this unit, and your own personal experience(s): Do you believe success (whether it be on a smaller, more individual scale or something as large as achieving social progress) is largely a result of individualism or collectivism? The most effective essays will engage and synthesize the different sources specified from the unit and utilize the pre-writing activities completed for our class.

Article Analysis 1

The interpretation of research in health care is essential to decision making. By understanding research, health care providers can identify risk factors, trends, outcomes for treatment, health care costs and best practices. To be effective in evaluating and interpreting research, the reader must first understand how to interpret the findings. You will practice article analysis in Topics 2, 3, and 5.

For this assignment:

Search the GCU Library and find three different health care articles that use quantitative research. Do not use articles that appear in the Topic Materials or textbook. Complete an article analysis for each using the “Article Analysis 1” template.

Refer to the “Patient Preference and Satisfaction in Hospital-at-Home and Usual Hospital Care for COPD Exacerbations: Results of a Randomised Controlled Trial,” in conjunction with the “Article Analysis Example 1,” for an example of an article analysis.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Program Design Discussion post

There are many different collaborative practice models in healthcare. These include the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model and others. For your initial discussion post, identify one model and examine how it could be applied to improve the design of a healthcare program. The articles located in the module resources section will assist you in this discussion. Be sure to include concepts from the class in support of your initial post and provide evidence by way of peer-reviewed sources to support your post.

Module Resources:

Collaborative Practice Models

This module will introduce you to the concept of collaborative practice models and how those models relate to the development of healthcare programs. While it is easy to think of healthcare programs in silos (nursing, laboratory, physician, pharmacy), effective programs are rarely effective when delivered in silos. Scarce resources are best allocated and utilized by collaborative teams of practitioners when addressing healthcare transformation. You are introduced to a number of different collaborative models in this module. These resources will encourage you to integrate the idea of clapboard of practice into the design of your final project.

Health Disparities and Disparate Populations

Health disparities are often regarded as referring only to populations who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. In reality there are many types of health disparities in the U.S. and global health economies. As outlined by Healthy People 2020, the simple reality of a condition or disease occurrence being different in genders of the same socioeconomic group can create a significant disparity (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). Thus, when you think about how to design and play healthcare programs, the challenge has to do with thinking about diverse populations and the realities of differences in society. Factors that create disparities may be as broad as considerations related to geography and will access populations, gender, educational level, or sexual orientation. When leaders design healthcare programs aimed to assist disparate populations, they must keep in mind that the deployment of those programs must be done in as ethical a manner as possible.

Blending Programs Into Existing Workflows

It is challenging to develop programs for many disparate populations and incorporate those programs into the existing flow of healthcare organizations. When you look at practical matters such as the onslaught of volumes into the healthcare system as a result of the Affordable Care Act, you have to consider the tolerance of existing healthcare infrastructure (Medicaid, 2015). The number of primary care visits is expected to increase from 15 million visits per year to 24 million visits per year in the year 2019 from the onset of the Accountable Care Act alone (Hofer, Abraham, & Moscovice, 2011). This module addresses some of these types of issues related to the deployment of classic healthcare programs, such as vouchers and their effect on healthcare utilization and volumes. The reality is that the healthcare manager’s role is to create innovative ways to blend these programs into existing healthcare workflows, creating as efficient a new process as possible.

Challenging Old Paradigms

In this module, you are given the opportunity to think critically and evaluate current program models such as voucher programs. As you progress into increasingly stringent requirements around healthcare resources and accountability, it is imperative that you, as a program manager, are able to critically assess programs and their value. Some of the old paradigms that are held true do not necessarily apply to evolving healthcare models that are focused less on volume and more on outcomes. Therefore, as you look at a model as traditional as a voucher program that increases service utilization, you have to ask yourself whether the current systems can adequately address increased utilization. Are there ways in which you can leverage in different healthcare providers to more cost effectively and efficiently address some of the traditional program models? Can you shift some of the activities of administering a program to the patient/client as a collaborator?

This module challenges you to apply a collaborative care model to your program idea. You should ask yourself if the practice of collaboration between different healthcare providers improves the possible performance of your program idea? Are there nontraditional ways that elements of your program can be delivered to patients (such as using providers in an innovative manner)? What are the roles of providers, such as a pharmacist in the coordination of care? What is the role of the patient’s family member or caregiver in the collaborative practice model? All of these questions help you apply the ideas of collaborative practice to your evolving program and improve the creative elements of that program.

As we read in our lectures this week, philosopher John Locke asked: “If a man in the state of nature is free if he is absolute lord of his own person and possessions, why will he give up his freedom? Why will he put himself under the control of any person or institution?”

John Locke’s answer was: “that the rights in the state of nature are constantly exposed to the attacks of others. Since every man is equal and since most men do not concern themselves with equity and justice, the enjoyment of rights in the state of nature is unsafe and insecure. Hence each man joins in society with others to preserve life, liberty, and property.”

In at least 500 words answer the following questions:

·  In your own words, what is freedom? (*Note: dictionary definitions of the word freedom will not be accepted)

·  In your own words, what is liberty? (*Note: dictionary definitions of the words liberty will not be accepted)

·  Does your definition of freedom agree with Locke’s definition of freedom? Why or why not?

·  Does your definition of liberty agree with Locke’s understanding of liberty? Why or why not?

·  John Locke argues that freedom and liberty are very different things. Do you agree or not? Why or why not?

·  Finally, how did these ideas of liberty and freedom connect to the creation of the Constitution?
