International Perspectives in Community Health

TOPIC: Benchmark – Participatory Learning and Action Tools

Participatory learning and action (PLA) tools are used to engage communities in a process of shared decision making around their strengths and assets. Action steps are often identified by the group to make social, economic, or environmental changes in their community. Select and practice one of the following participatory learning and action tools:

  1. Community asset map
  2. Holistic worldview analysis
  3. Appreciative inquiry interview
  4. Problem tree analysis (also called diagramming)
  5. Photovoice

Guides on how to facilitate the tools are described in the community engagement and PLA resources in the Topic Materials. Identify an individual or group of individuals with whom you are currently working as part of your job, service, volunteerism, or family. Review the selected tool and become familiar with the process and purpose of the tool prior to facilitating it with your selected individual or group.

In a 1,000-1,250-word essay, discuss the following:

  1. What tool did you select and why did you select it instead of the other options?
  2. What cultural insight did you learn based on the individual or group you selected? Include a brief description of the individual or group you engaged for this assignment.
  3. What challenges did you identify in facilitating the tool?
  4. Discuss how the participants responded to the tool regarding their participation and shared decision making. Consider how PLA tools are focused on building the capacity of people versus projects or programs.
  5. A Health in All Policies approach, which include economic and environmental factors, is important in addressing the interconnectedness of health factors to support holistic transformation. Discuss how this community engagement approach through such a tool is useful for assessing a Health in All      Policies approach. In addition, consider how this approach is effective in reducing health disparities by addressing economic and environmental issues through community mobilization and assets. Review the website and introductory report on “Health in All Policies,” by the American Public Health Association (APHA), and “What You Need to Know About Health in All Policies,” by the World Health
Organization (WHO), located in the Topic Materials for additional insight.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.

NU560-WEEK5-DISCUSSION2-REPLY2

Implementing EBP Model in Practice, Administration, or Education Setting

To implement evidence based practice (EBP), the Iowa Model is widely considered to be one of the best models to use. It is routinely used in implementing EBP in nursing practice and education. This model consists of seven steps for implementation including: selecting a topic, forming a team, evidence retrieval, grading the evidence developing a EBP standard, implementing the evidence, and evaluation (Buckwalter et al., 2017). Due to the thorough nature of this theory, it can useful in implementing EBP interventions in nursing education and/or practice. This model is detailed in terms of the steps that it lays out and allows for a researcher to easy follow the steps to implement EBP in their respective setting. Another important step in the process of implementing EBP is evaluation, this model addresses this topic and allows the researcher to determine if the intervention was effective in practice or an educational setting (Buckwalter et al., 2017).

Introducing the Change

This change could be introduced by two methods. First to help introduce the change a team could be formed specific to that area of practice (Buckwalter et al., 2017). This would help facilitate engagement among staff members when trying to implement EBP in a practice setting or among learners in an educational environment. The other major factor with using this model to introduce change, is the impact or magnitude of the problem being researched. If the problem lacks depth and importance, it is less likely to be implemented (Buckwalter et al., 2017).

Barriers to Change

One possible barrier to introducing this model may be lack of support for its use in the practice or educational setting. For example, some staff members may find the IOWA Model more difficult to use compared to other models. Another possible barrier is preconceived notions that EBP research and implementation is difficult and time consuming. Lastly, another barrier to implementing change with this model is that some people may find that using this process takes time and some may not want to use this method (Buckwalter et al., 2017).

Lab Assignment: Assessing the Genitalia and Rectum

PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AS INDICATED BELOW:

1). ZERO (0) PLAGIARISM

2). AT LEAST 5 REFERENCES, NO MORE THAN 5 YEARS (WITHIN 5YRS, OR LESS THAN 5YRS)

3). PLEASE SEE THE ATTACHMENT FOR RUBRIC DETAILS AND EPISODIC/FOCUSED NOTE TEMPLATE

Patients are frequently uncomfortable discussing with healthcare professional’s issues that involve the genitalia and rectum; however, gathering an adequate history and properly conducting a physical exam are vital. Examining case studies of genital and rectal abnormalities can help prepare advanced practice nurses to accurately assess patients with problems in these areas.

In this Lab Assignment, you will analyze an Episodic note case study that describes abnormal findings in patients seen in a clinical setting. You will consider what history should be collected from the patients, as well as which physical exams and diagnostic tests should be conducted. You will also formulate a differential diagnosis with several possible conditions.

To Prepare

  • Review the Episodic note case study your instructor provides you for this week’s Assignment. Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your Episodic note case study.
  • Based on the Episodic note case study:
    • Review this week’s Learning Resources, and consider the insights they provide about the case study. Refer to Chapter 3 of the Sullivan resource to guide you as you complete your Lab Assignment.
    • Search the Walden library or the Internet for evidence-based resources to support your answers to the questions provided.
    • Consider what history would be necessary to collect from the patient in the case study.
    • Consider what physical exams and diagnostic tests would be appropriate to gather more information about the patient’s condition. How would the results be used to make a diagnosis?
    • Identify at least five possible conditions that may be considered in a differential diagnosis for the patient.

The Lab Assignment

Using evidence-based resources from your search, answer the following questions and support your answers using current evidence from the literature.

  • Analyze the subjective portion of the note. List additional information that should be included in the documentation.
  • Analyze the objective portion of the note. List additional information that should be included in the documentation.
  • Is the assessment supported by the subjective and objective information? Why or why not?
  • Would diagnostics be appropriate for this case, and how would the results be used to make a diagnosis?
  • Would you reject/accept the current diagnosis? Why or why not? Identify three possible conditions that may be considered as a differential diagnosis for this patient. Explain your reasoning using at least three different references from current evidence-based literature.

Sports Management Briefing

Assignment: Each student will carefully read a legal opinion (Hiett v. Lake Barcroft Community Association).
Upon reading said case, each student will complete a case brief following the instructions outlined below. After reading and analyzing the case, address the following issues:
1. Do you believe that certain topics should be ‘off limits’ when it comes to the subject matter of contracts? For example, should the Courts uphold contracts dealing with illegal issues (e.g. drugs, prostitution, etc.)?
2. Should triathlon participants be expected to honor their promise with respect to exculpatory clauses in contracts? In other words, does one’s promise ‘not to sue’ matter, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling?
3. Did you agree or disagree with the Court’s rationale in deciding the case?
4. Which authority should have jurisdiction (power/authority) over the issue of contracts and enforcement among private parties? Civil government, Church, Family, Self?
5. Reflect on the case in light of the truths outlined in the Christian worldview. Support your position using various Christian sources (e.g. Scripture, Catechisms, historic Christian Creeds, etc.).
Your paper must be completed based on the following criteria:
 3 full pages;
 1-inch margins;
 Double-spaced;
 12-point, Times New Roman font;
Put a title on the top line of the first page, and include your name. No other identifying information is needed. Do not include a separate cover page. Citations must be in APA format and included on a separate reference page.

Immigration Discussion

The current immigration issue has long historical roots in American society. We are all immigrants (based on the Bering Strait theory). Some immigrants have been widely accepted by the U.S. or at worst accepted after a generation. Others have not.

What is the common basis for American acceptance and what is common to non acceptance. Why were some groups accepted and others not?  Why is the current immigration issue in terms of Latinos such a hot topic and why is it often  debated  in Congress. The current often discussed issue is focused on  Latino young people and children being “the new wave “of immigrants ( which are not wanted) but this issue towards Latinos had long historical roots  and does not evolve from just a  current perceived  “crises”. There is more to this issue. Homeland security is probably not a significant issue as there have been few indications of security threats from the south. Nearly all orange alert related events have pointed to our NORTHERN border.  Current Numbers are also not THE  primary issue as many Latinos encountered similar “immigration issues” and  attempt to “plug” the borders and reduce Latino immigration in past decade. Be logical and thoughtful and complete. Why do many people and officials  focus primarily (but not exclusively) on Latinos when we  discuss immigration?   Our highest percentage increases in immigrants were Anglos  (primarily British -many also in a sense were illegal as  they did not attempt to obtain the approval of indigenous peoples.  Europe was he source of this “uninvited ” migration. ?

Do not rely on the issue of legal and illegal status for though important, it is an issue that has always been present for all groups and is usually now a rationalization not a reason.

DO NOT USE THE PROXIMITY OF MEXICO , CENTRAL AMERICA AND SOUTH AMERICA AS PART OF YOUR ARGUMENTS NOR USE THE INCREASING NUMBERS OF LATINOS   These ideas  do play a role but they are far too simplistic. You need to think and develop more complete discussions.

Let me state once again. Do not use the issue of illegal or  illegal as part of your discussion at all. The first settlers to American were ILLEGAL. ( That means the settlers at Jamestown and Plymouth Rock) Ask the Native Americans. The European settlers ( primarily British at the beginning) were not invited nor did they try to assimilate to the tribes in which they found themselves. They did not obey the Native American  “laws” either. I want you to reach beyond this every simple argument to other ideas. It simply does not adequately explain the passion or focus of many.

Let me also dispel some other “common sense myths”. Latino immigrants do pay taxes and they pay in far greater amounts (value) then other people (non immigrants) of similar income levels pay. . They receive social services (health, welfare) fairly equal in value or less than other groups in their income categories.. They have added enormous value to and even provided the foundation for the continued low pricing of agricultural products and also housing and business construction. Without this labor pool, it is fairly unanimously agreed that the prices of these goods and other services would be very high. (2-3 times higher).  One of the major reasons that immigrants have increased in North America recently  is due to NAFTA ( a Free trade agreement) which had destructive impact on Mexico and in some ways benefited United States more than any other participant.

Individual Research Paper (6 – 8 pages)

Textbook : Myers, David G. & Twenge, Jean, M.  (2018). Exploring Social Psychology. 8th ed. McGraw-Hill Education.

It will be 6 – 8 pages on a chosen topic reflecting your thoughts and perspectives relating to the social “self”.  This research paper is based on appraisal of the social “self” by examining personal attitudes in relation to group processes through a carefully reasoned research paper.

Select two social psychological concepts from our class textbook. Your Research Paper will adhere to this structure: Your first section, Thesis and Literature Review, must contain a well-focused thesis and your two theories/concepts that you are researching. The literature must include material from our class textbook (2 sources) and 3 additional articles that summarize your theories/concepts.  All 5 sources must be properly cited both in this section and in your Works Cited section.

Your Methods section will include data from your personality profile; 20 Statements Test (see below); your Myers-Briggs Personality profile and any other method which may include either a qualitative research method (ex: interviews) or a quantitative research method (ex: surveys). Any of these methods are acceptable but it must be based on your “self”.

Your Discussion section is a detailed analysis of your findings. This is a very thorough section and includes your personal perspectives, and your reactions from your Methods section.

Your Conclusion section should contain an impactful summary that relates back to your thesis. It is also suggested that recommendations for future research is also included within your Conclusion. Works Cited includes all properly cited sources used within your paper.

To sum it up, consider the Individual Research paper Part 1 is the the 2 Modules you will be analyzing that fit your concept of yourself,  Part 2 is your collection of the personality tests and reflections, including your conclusion. Your test results should be added at the end of your paper as an appendix.

20 Statements Test

In your Research Paper write a different answer to the question  “Who am I?”
As you write these answers, respond as if you are giving these answers to yourself and not to somebody else.  Also, write your responses quickly and in the order they occur to you. When you have completed 20 Answers, you have finished taking the 20 Statements Test.

Please take this test yourself AND also give it to 2 OTHER PEOPLE:  your friends/ family/ co-workers/ classmates/ significant other to take the 20 Statements Test about YOU. Then COMPARE the similarities and differences to how you view yourself and how others view YOU.

NOTE: ATTACH EACH OF THE SETS OF The 20 RESPONSES FROM EACH OF THE 2 PEOPLE YOU GAVE THE 20 STATEMENTS TEST TO,  ALONG WITH YOUR OWN RESPONSES, IN THE SECTION THAT YOU TITLE “ 20 STATEMENTS TEST.” YOU CAN SCAN THE ACTUAL TESTS IF YOU WISH OR RE -TYPE THE ANSWERS YOU RECEIVED IN THE 20 STATEMENTS TEST.

Compare your responses to the 2 people you have given the 20 Statements Test to. What responses are you surprised by, do you agrees with how you see yourself, what gives you something to think about in terms of what you would like to work on personally? Conclude with a thorough self-reflection and link back significant social psychological concepts you cited within your paper.

Career Discussion

What do you anticipate would be the most difficult clinical issue (based on the chapter readings) facing students in secondary schools today? Why would this be difficult for you, and what steps could you take to address this issue? Provide at least one good paragraph and be sure to check your work for spelling and grammatical errors.

Respond to 2 other student’s posts.  Your responses should be at least a paragraph and not just “I agree”.  Points will be deducted for limited work.

——————-

1 – the first student response

The most clinical issue that children in secondary schools face today are bullying. Bullying is a serious problem affecting all ages, and it affects every age group. The effects of bullying can be devastating for any child. There are many ways to deal with this problem. There are many different types of bullying. Some people bully others because they feel like they have to or want too. The best way to handle bullying is to address what you know about it. If someone has been bullied before, they should talk to a teacher or counselor. They should also try to get help from a friend or family member.

2- the second response

The most clinical issue facing students in secondary schools today is bullying. I find it difficult for me speaking on the fact I have a 6 year old child that’s in kindergarten. Kids are really cruel and mean.  I feel with bullying it starts from the home leading to school Parents should take bullying serious, teach kids to treat others with respect, learn the child’s social life, and encourage good behavior. The schools should mandate bullying in the students curriculum as least 30 mins a day or twice a week giving any student the option to express themselves and fell safe rather its at home or school.
