Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 4: Research Analysis

Architect Daniel Libeskind is credited with saying “To provide meaningful architecture is not to parody history, but to articulate it.” The suggestion is that his work does not copy the efforts of others but relies on it.

Understanding the work of others is critically important to new work. Contributions to the nursing body of knowledge can happen when you are able to analyze and articulate the efforts of previous research. Research analysis skills are therefore critical tools for your toolbox.

In this Assignment, you will locate relevant existing research. You also will analyze this research using a tool helpful for analysis.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the strategies presented in the Resources this Module’s Learning Resources in support of locating and analyzing research.
  • Use the school Library to identify and read one peer-reviewed research article focused on a topic in your specialty field that interests you.
  • Review the article you selected and reflect on the professional practice use of theories/concepts described by the article.

The Assignment:

Using the “Module 4 | Part 4” section of your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Template presented in the Resources, conduct an analysis of the elements of the research article you identified. Be sure to include the following:

  • Your topic of interest.
  • A correctly formatted APA citation of the article you selected, along with link or search details.
  • Identify a professional practice use of the theories/concepts presented in the article.
  • Analysis of the article using the “Research Analysis      Matrix” section of the template
  • Write a 1-paragraph justification stating whether you would recommend this article to inform professional practice.
  • Write a 2- to 3-paragraph summary that you will add to your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan that includes the following:
    • Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research.
    • Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research.
    • Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research.

GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS

Requesting a 24-page research paper (excluding the title page, abstract, and references) utilizing at least 24 references from reputable professional and/or scholarly journals and/or informational venues that deal with the content of the course (i.e., not blogs, Wikipedia, newspapers, etc.) on the global business cultural analysis.  The writer can select from the following countries:

Chile

Italy

Japan

Singapore

South Korea

Spain

United Arab Emirates

The paper must be broken into the four following section

  1. What are the major elements and dimensions of culture in this region? (See Chapter 2 of the      textbook for a list of the required dimensions.)
    1. How are these elements and dimensions integrated by locals conducting business in the nation?
    2. How do both of the above items compare with US culture and business?
    3. What are the implications for US businesses that wish to conduct business in that region?

More directions below and attached.

The purpose of this research project is for you to write a professional, graduate-level research paper in current APA format. Competency in current APA format is required of all business graduates of Liberty University, as set forth by policy of both the graduate faculty and the administration.

You will research and write a paper analyzing the cultural perspectives of doing business in another nation. You will select a nation to study, and have approximately 8 modules/weeks to research and write the paper. Your professor will provide a list of approved nations by the second day of the course. Select a nation, then begin working on the project.

After reading your paper, the reader should be able to comprehensively answer the following research questions. Thus, the research questions form the major aspects (APA Level 1 headings) of your outline.

  • What are the major elements and dimensions of culture in this region? (See Chapter 2 of the      textbook for a list of the required dimensions.)
  • How are these elements and dimensions integrated by locals conducting business in the nation?
  • How do both of the above items compare with US culture and business?
  • What are the implications for US businesses that wish to conduct business in that region?

Important Points to Consider

This paper must be written in strict conformance to the current APA format, and contain a minimum of 24 pages of content (excluding the title page, abstract, and references) utilizing at least 24 references from reputable professional and/or scholarly journals and/or informational venues that deal with the content of the course (i.e., not blogs, Wikipedia, newspapers, etc.).

  1. Use the following as the exact title of your paper, Global Business Cultural Analysis: ( Chile, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, or United Arab Emirates
  2. The paper must consist of only 4 sections (below), as indicated above. Do not add sections, or revise the research questions.
  3. Three levels of current APA headings must be used throughout the paper, as this is a graduate-level research paper.

Some students do not fully understand the difference between plagiarism and paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is when you take a source or someone else’s idea and say it in your own words. When you paraphrase, you must still give the author’s name, date, title of the source, the scholarly journal from where it came, and the exact website address or book from where it came. However, when you directly quote a source, it must have quotation marks around the quote, or (if 40 words or more) it must be set in block quotation format. Give detailed information of where you acquired the quote.

For the purpose of this academic paper, adhere to the following rules when quoting or using a source:

· Do not directly quote more than 120 words from any 1 source.

· If the source is 2,000 words or less, do not directly quote more than 50 words from it.

· Do not use the same source more than a total of 3 times within the whole document for quoting or paraphrasing.

· Quotes must contain the section (if provided) and paragraph or page numbers of the quote and this information must be placed in the reference.

· In all instances, use current APA guidelines for citations and references.

Understanding what students need to know is as important as knowing where they came from in the previous grade and where they are headed in the next grade. This allows for meaningful scaffolding of instruction. Discussing techniques for scaffolding instruction with other teachers is a great way to continue to improve in your teaching practices.

For this assignment, interview two teachers in consecutive K-3 grades at the same school. In your interviews, include the following questions:

  • How do you scaffold instruction for your students?
  • How do you create instruction that incorporates concepts from previous grades and prepares students for the next grade?
  • Do you collaborate with teachers in other grade levels? If so, in what capacity?
  • Using the information from the interviews and your observations, write a 250-500 word summary addressing the following:
  • After your interviews, spend at least one hour observing each of these teachers, particularly noting how they scaffold math instruction.
  • Describe how scaffolding could be the basis of instruction.
  • Explain the purposes and benefits to students when teachers collaborate between grade levels.
  • Describe how you can apply what you learned about designing and implementing standards-based math instruction to your future teaching practice.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected

Individual project 5

The best way to identify strengths and weaknesses of an infrastructure sector is conducting a survey or vulnerability assessment. Following the parameters of the type of assessment tool being used, any weaknesses in the critical infrastructure component will be noted and brought to attention to the agencies responsible for the component. Many tools contain a checklist, which is used to eliminate the possibility of overlooking a vulnerability factor.

Address the following in a 5–7-page paper:

  • Conduct a vulnerability analysis on a component of critical infrastructure of your choice.
  • You may select the vulnerability assessment method or tool, but you must fully explain the assessment methodology in your final report.
    • In your report, you must address the following questions:
      • What vulnerability assessment method did you use? Explain why.
      • What strengths did you find with regard to your selected critical infrastructure component? Explain in detail.
      • What vulnerabilities did you find associated with your selected critical infrastructure component? Explain in detail.
      • Is there any information that you would require for a more thorough analysis? Explain why or why not.
      • What challenges did you encounter? Explain.
      • How did you overcome these challenges? Explain.
  • Your report must use the following format:
    • Title
    • Synopsis
    • Executive Summary
    • Introduction
    • Details
    • Summary
    • Conclusion
    • Final recommendations to the agency or agencies responsible for the component

Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

HOMEWORK ASSIGMMENT

Assignment Overview

As a health care administrator, one of the challenges can be ensuring that federal, state, and local policies are effectively implemented within one’s health care organization, and they become part of internal policy. The background readings have highlighted three such policies.

  • The requirement of certain health care facilities who participate in Medicare and Medicaid to strengthen their emergency preparedness
  • The requirement to reduce hospital readmissions
  • The requirement that hospitals comply with regulations surrounding the release of patients’ health care records

Case Assignment

You are an assistant administrator in a nonprofit hospital that receives Medicare and Medicaid funding. Your boss has asked you to make a presentation to other leadership about one of the above policies. She would like for you to provide an overview of the policy, the implications for your organization for non-compliance, as well as recommendations about what you should be doing to ensure compliance.

After reviewing the background readings and doing additional necessary research, choose one of the regulations above. You must locate and review the legislation in question as part of your research, and include the correct citation to the federal legislation in your reference list. This must be for the actual legislation and not for a secondary source. Create a 10- to 15-slide PowerPoint presentation that covers all of the expectations of your boss. Be sure to provide speaker’s notes that extrapolate on the information within your slides and cite your sources in your slides and speaker’s notes. You should also include a reference slide.

Discuss how geopolitical and phenomenological place influence the context of a population or community assessment and intervention.

  Topic 1 DQ 2

Geopolitical and phenomenological place influence the context of a population or community assessment and intervention in various ways. A community could be defined by one of two designations, phenomenological (relational) or geological (spatial). A geographic community is a community within defined jurisdictional boundaries. These communities could include city communities, rural municipalities or towns. Phenomenological communities, on the other hand, define a group of people with shared or similar-minded relationships, beliefs, goals, and interests (Leipert, 1996). They might not necessarily share the same geographical boundaries as geographical communities. These communities could include social groups or religious groups. These people mostly come together to achieve the feeling of belonging in their relational designations. These people may have a group perspective that differentiates them from other groups on matters including culture, values, beliefs, characteristics, and goals.

Everyone lives in a geographic community and many people are also part of a phenomenological group. These groupings present various challenges for public health nurses. The main challenge is the issue of cultural and language barriers. Some of the practices that can help overcome these challenges include reflective practice and obtaining knowledge of different cultures and practices. Nurses should also self-evaluate and ensure that their personal beliefs do not interfere with the nursing process.

The nursing process is utilized to assist in identifying health issues because it involves the appropriate application of a systematic series of actions that aim at ensuring that individuals achieve their optimal level of health. The main steps in the nursing processes include assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Assessment refers to the collection and evaluation of information regarding the status of health in the community (Rector, 2013). It aids in discovering potential or existing needs and assets as a basis for any future action plans or interventions.

Using 200-300 words APA format with references to support the discussion.

Discuss how geopolitical and phenomenological place influence the context of a population or community assessment and intervention. Describe how the nursing process is utilized to assist in identifying health issues (local or global in nature) and in creating an appropriate intervention, including screenings and referrals, for the community or population.

Globalization and Cross-cultural Psychology

Subscribe

The readings for Week 5 discuss how globalization and the spread of new concepts and ideas and change from other cultures can cause anxiety.  The studies done in places like Samoa are now world famous and presented in nearly every sociology and cross-cultural psychology course around the world.  As we have seen earlier in this course, change, especially changes in technology culture, can often bring great improvements in human life.  For example, think of improvements in medicine that extend life, or in information technology (robotics, computers, the cell phone, social media, etc.).  Why is it then that the effects of globalization can cause so much cultural anxiety?  For this conference discussion, please answer the following two questions.  Be sure to support your comments with evidence of research (citations) and respond to at least two other students main postings.

1.  Imagine you are a 55 year old American factory worker looking forward to retirement but afraid of being “laid off” by new technology in your workplace.  You have a high school education but never attended college.  Over the years you have seen your section of the city and neighborhood change as the older generation of white residents like you has aged and moved away or passed away.  Most of the new arrivals in your neighborhood are ethnic minorities and most do not speak English at home.  The languages you now mostly hear on the streets include Spanish and some other languages you cannot even identify.  The school board is asking the mayor to increase the school  budget (and taxes) to provide for more teaching aides to assist teachers in the crowded schools.  Explain how this combination of factors might contribute to your outlook and concerns.

2.  Imagine that you are the ethnic minority parents of two school age children (6 and 12 years old) that just moved in to the same neighborhood after waiting years to move into the United States.  You want to earn enough money to buy your own home as soon as possible and you are also very determined to have your children learn English and possibly have at least some lessons in the schools taught in your native language so they do not fall behind in learning.  You also hope to convert or build a place of worship for your religious beliefs.  Finally, you hope to bring your aging parents and siblings to join you in your new neighborhood.  Explain how this combination of factors might contribute to your outlook and concerns.

LITERATURE REVIEW DUE IN 20 HOURS

DUE IN 20 HOURS

Literature Review

You are to write a 1050 to 1750 word literature review (in addition to the title page and references page) on the articles you selected for Week 2, synthesizing the findings in the articles that you found on your topic. You may incorporate other articles or references to support your discussion, as needed. Use APA citation and reference guidelines.

What is a literature review?
A literature review is a synthesis and critique of the published research in a given area of research. Your focus is on the findings of the studies you are exploring – their methods, approach, results, and implications – rather than the broad topic overall. It should synthesize findings in specific areas. Thus, you should look for themes in the range of articles and write about them as you group common themes.

Synthesize the material you found. In other words, find connected themes in the different areas you cover. Occasionally you might discuss individual articles, but only if the article is very unique and no other article has similar findings. The synthesis should focus strictly on existing, published research.

What else should you include besides a synthesis of research?
Be sure to include in your review other potential areas that still need to be explored. What unanswered questions are there? What holes are in the research that you have not yet found answers to? What contradictions are in the research will you seek to explore?

Examples of Synthesized Findings for Literature Review:

College students were found to have a large number of conflicts with roommates (Darsey, 2003; Smith, 2001; Yarmouth, 2005). Researchers also found that roommate conflicts were most frequent during the first semester of college (Lotspiech, 2004; Nominskee, 2001; Zackarov, 2000). Morissey (2004) found a reduction of roommate conflicts continued as students progressed from freshman to seniors, with seniors having the fewest roommate conflicts. However, Ellensworth (2001) found no correlation with year in school and frequency of roommate conflict. The contradiction between Ellensworth’s and Morissey’s findings suggest that additional research is needed in this area.

Ellensworth’s (2001) research was strictly quantitative, lacking a full picture of the contexts or reasons for the specific conflicts. It asked people to mark the frequency of their conflicts and types of people with whom they typically disputed. Morissey (2004) conducted interviews that allowed participants to provide an explanation for the reasons for the conflicts, and the contexts (dorm roommates, apartment roommates, house roommates, etc.). However, she interviewed far fewer people than Ellensworth surveyed.

Combining Ellensworth’s surveys with Morissey’s interview questions and utilizing a research team to increase the number of interviews could provide more details about the conflicts and contexts, and allow us to further look into the question of year in school and conflict behavior.

DeSoto (2005) and Craig (2004) found that most students lack an understanding of the term “binge drinking.” This research finding suggests that earlier investigations that utilized the words “binge drinking,” as an identifier for students have limited use. It also suggests that researchers should be very careful when using terms to make sure that research participants fully understand the terms being used.

Legal and Ethical Scenarios

Select two of the scenarios provided below. Analyze the facts in the scenarios and develop appropriate arguments/resolutions and recommendations. Support your responses with appropriate cases, laws and other relevant examples by using at least one scholarly source from the SUO Library in addition to your textbook for each scenario. Do not copy the scenarios into the paper. Cite your sources in APA format on a separate page. Submit the paper to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.

Scenario 1—Bankruptcy

Rusty Weaver, a project manager for the Tipton Machinery, filed a petition in bankruptcy under Chapter 7, seeking to discharge $75,000 in credit-card debts and $45,000 in student loans.  Weaver’s wife died and left him with two children, Paul, who attended college, and Diana, who was thirteen years old.  According to Weaver, Diana was an “elite” swimmer who practiced ten to fifteen hours a week and placed between first and third at more than thirty competitive events. Diana was homeschooled with academic achievements that were average for her grade level.  His petition showed monthly income of $5,325 and expenses of $5,200.  The expenses included annual homeschool costs of $8,200 and annual swimming expenses of $5,000.  The expenses did not include college costs for Paul, or airfare for his upcoming summer trip to Europe, and other items.  The trustee allowed monthly expenses of $4,227, with nothing for swimming, and asked the court to dismiss the petition.

If Weaver qualified for Chapter 7, which debts would be discharged?  Which debts would not be discharged?  Why?

Using the median income from your state, does Weaver qualify for Chapter 7?

Should the court grant the trustee’s request?  Does Weaver have other options if the Chapter 7 petition is dismissed?

Explain your answers and support them with relevant scholarly sources.

Scenario II – Organizations and Liability

Vance Armstrong was the sole incorporator of Triathlon Training Inc., a corporation designed to operate a training center for triathletes of all ages. The business was incorporated according to Florida law in January 2015, with Armstrong as the sole director and shareholder. Armstrong contributed $20,000 of starting capital, which was just enough to make minor repairs to the property he purchased for $400,000 with a loan from the bank. The corporation had no liability insurance. On June 15, 2015, the center opened for business. Over the next few months, the corporation operated with a profit.

In July, Armstrong took a two-week vacation in France and used a check written on the company bank account to purchase his airline ticket. In September, Armstrong decided to have the pool resurfaced. Because business had slowed and the corporation’s bank account did not have sufficient funds, Armstrong wrote a personal check to cover the work. Armstrong feared he would not make enough money through the winter to turn a profit, so he decided to work a part-time job selling fitness equipment as an independent contractor for Bowflex. Armstrong used the training center’s office phone to make calls, the copy machine for copies, and the computer for searches. He made a substantial profit, which was maintained in a third bank account not associated with Triathlon Training or his personal account.

On April 1, 2016, a child with a mild learning disability drowned in the pool while training for the local children’s triathlon. The parents brought a suit for wrongful death against Triathlon Training Inc. and against Armstrong in his individual capacity as owner. At the time of the suit, the corporation had less than $2,500 in its bank account. Because of these limited funds, the child’s parents hoped to recover most of their damages directly from Armstrong, who lived in a mansion on the beach.

Will the parents be successful in holding Triathlon Training Inc. liable for the child’s death?

What should the parents argue in order to hold Vance Armstrong liable in his individual capacity? Will the parents prevail? Why or why not?

How could Armstrong have protected himself against this type of potential liability?

Scenario III—Insider Trading

During a session with her doctor, Billy Mooney, Maggie Mason mentioned in confidence the imminent merger of Walgreens with Rite-Aid. Mason’s ex-husband, Gus Mason, was on the board of directors at Walgreens. Mooney communicated the information to a securities broker, Olive Green, who immediately made trades in Walgreen’s securities for her own account and for her customers’ accounts.

Did Mooney, Maggie Mason, Gus Mason, or Olive Green engage in illegal insider trading? Explain the potential culpability of each party. Include possible civil or criminal penalties for each party.

Was the conduct of the parties ethical?
