W2: Topic Selection & Literature Review

Review recently published (within the past five years) peer-reviewed scholarly articles located in the AMU/APUS University’s online library databases.  Discuss a criminal justice, intelligence studies, international relations or security management topic requesting instructor approval of the topic you would like for your research proposal (term project) paper. In doing so, please remember for this class you are selecting a topic NOT for writing a research paper about, but rather for writing a proposal to do actual hands-on research using scientific research methodology. In your discussion post discuss what you have identified in the current peer-reviewed literature located in the APUS Library databases on a topic you wish to research. Briefly discuss the literature and express what still needs to be researched or requires further research on the topic you would like to address in your research proposal. In other words, did the authors of the studies already done on this topic you reviewed call for further research on the topic or something to do with the topic? Then again, perhaps you identified a problem that still needs to be researched on the topic where the current literature is lacking.  If so, discuss what it is and how it pertains to the topic and why it needs to be researched and who would benefit from the research. After doing so, you are to provide a ‘Working Title’ for your Research Proposal, as discussed in this week’s lesson. Understanding this may change as your Research Proposal develops during the course.

Assignment Preparation

In Unit 9, you will be submitting a PowerPoint presentation as part of your assignment. To prepare for this assignment, read the following resources.

Readings

Use your Neukrug textbook to read the following.

  • Chapter 5, “The Helping Interview: Skills, Process, and Case Management,” pages 99–132.

Learning Components

This activity will help you achieve the following learning components:

  • Align human services roles with a selected service delivery model.
  • Describe skills and knowledge needed for different human services roles.
  • Apply the principles of effective composition.
  • Develop communications appropriate for the audience.

Final Case Study and Recommendations

In this assignment, you will finalize your case study making recommendations for needed services and planning for their implementation. You will create two documents for this assignment, one paper of 8–10 pages as the final course project and a PowerPoint presentation of 8–10 slides with speakers notes. The PowerPoint presentation should be made to a hypothetical team of professionals working on the issues in your case study. It should summarize your analysis of the case study including theoretical orientation and recommended service implementation.

Paper – In Unit 5, you conducted a literature review, which most likely revealed many new perspectives, approaches, and solutions to problems. This week, you will revise your submissions from Unit 3, 5 and 7 to construct your final course paper. Each of those units should be combined to create one document that is integrated and presents a holistic perspective of human service theories, service delivery models, and roles. Respond to any questions related to ethical conflicts and dilemmas presented in Unit 3. Incorporate recommendations for the case study and what functions each of the human service professionals will perform in the case study.

PowerPoint – Your PowerPoint presentation should include the following:

  • Introduction
    • Provide an overview of the case study you have chosen to focus on for your final course paper.
  • Areas for exploration and next steps
    • In more detail, describe 2–3 big ideas you have already started to uncover because of your literature review. Describe the roles and responsibilities of the human service professionals you selected for your case study. Cite the Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals linked in the Resources as you discuss ethical considerations.
  • Conclusion
    • Provide a brief conclusion describing the overall plan for recommendations.

Refer to the APA Style and Format link in the Resources for guidance on formatting all assignments in this course.

Significant Contributions to Public Health Final Assignment Part 1

[WLOs: 3] [CLO: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review these resources:

This is a two-part assignment. This week, you will complete the first part of the work as defined below. In Week 5, you will continue to add to this work to complete the final project in class. Please review the Week 5 directions for the Significant Contributions to Public Health Final Assignment details, including the grading rubric, to understand the full grading criteria.

For this part of the assignment, you will create a 12-15 slide PowerPoint presentation with detailed speaker’s notes of at least 100 words for each slide, not including the title and reference slides. Do NOT record the speaker’s notes as the file size will be too large to submit. These should be written and placed in the Notes section below each slide. Please see the HCA415 PowerPoint Instructions downloaddocument for expanded information on expected detail in your presentation.

The presentation will be based on your research of a historical figure in the public health world, their contribution to public health, and how their work helped shape the public health system that serves the community. Furthermore, you will analyze how their contribution from the past continues to contribute to today’s public health system, and how it might guide future work within the industry.

Complete the following steps:

  • Select one of the historical figures listed below for your presentation. They are linked throughout the textbook to help get you started on your project. Choose one of the following:
    • John Snow
    • Margaret Sanger
    • Jonas Salk
    • Larry Kramer
    • Edward Jenner
    • Rachel Carson
    • Sara Josephine Baker
    • William Phelps Eno
    • Sir Edwin Chadwick
    • Luther Terry
    • John Graunt
    • Dick Cheney
    • Everett Koop
    • E.B. DuBois
    • Charles Edward Winslow
    • Franklin D. Roosevelt
    • Clara Barton
    • Florence Nightingale
    • Thomas Francis
    • Albert Calmette
    • Camille Guerin
    • Ignaz Semmelweiss
    • An individual of your own choice: you must obtain instructor approval in advance for this option.

Use the outline below to organize your presentation. As you create the content, it is expected that you will formulate a well thought out analysis for each segment with logical transitions as you would a professional presentation. Research and critical thinking are large components of this project. You will curate resources to support your statements using proper APA Style (Links to an external site.).

  • Describe your selected person’s biographical background and experience.
    • Tip: research the individual’s background. This can include resume elements such as birthdate, location, education, and brief statement of their contribution to public health. (reminder: biographical information can be easily plagiarized. Please do not copy from your biographical websites. Paraphrase or quote and cite everything according to apa.)
  • Analyze the climate of the time period in terms of political, socioeconomic, environmental, and technological context in which this person worked.
    • Tip: Research the barriers and issue of the time. Think about whether this person was up against resistance or if the work this person did was welcomed.
  • Examine the personal beliefs of your person that prompted this work.
    • Tip: You are basically addressing the question: “Why did this person get involved with the issue at the time?”
  • Examine how this individual overcame or confronted any adversities.
    • Tip: Think about how this person overcame the barriers and issues. Questions to consider: what did the person specifically do? Did they have any allies? How did their actions succeed or fail?
  • Describe the final outcome of this individual’s contribution to community or public health.
    • Tip: Think about the importance of the contribution to community or public health at the time. Think about this question: What occurred as a result of this person’s action?
  • Explain what the individual’s contribution did for overall community or public health at the time.
    • Tip: Think about this question: What was the purpose for the community or nation?
  • Explain why this contribution was so important at that particular point in history.
    • Tip: Think about this question: What made this important for our nation?

Research Sources for Your Final Project

All of the individuals and their contributions are searchable through UAGC’s library at [email protected] platform (this is the search box on the library’s homepage). This platform searches across most of the databases that the library subscribes to. Watch the How to Use [email protected] (Links to an external site.) video.

The “Credo Reference” database in the UAGC Library is a great place to conduct background research for the Final Assignment Parts 1 and 2. You can access Credo Reference by clicking on the “Encylopedias & Dictionaries” button on the library homepage.

More specific database information is below. These are the specific databases that will be helpful for this assignment.

Ebook Central: the library’s largest e-book database. E-books will have academic information that will be helpful in providing biographical and background information. This includes background information on the people listed as well as the health topics and time periods.

EBSCOhost and ProQuest: These are two of the library’s largest databases that will be useful resources after conducting initial, background research.

JSTOR: an archival database with scholarly articles. The articles will not be very recent; some may range from quite old to just a couple years old. This database will be helpful when analyzing the historical and social perspectives of each topic.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric (Links to an external site.) for the criteria that will be used to evaluate y

1-2 page essay. Who can do this? Can you do it by tomorrow morning?

Speech
I am a new homeowner and let me tell you- it is always work! I am a professor of mathematics and statistics and that is how I filter everything. I had a hypothesis about German cockroaches that recently infested my Florida house.

I have a hypothesis that I tested. I wondered if every cockroach infesting my house was a German cockroach, or another type of cockroach. I concluded that approximately 70% of the cockroaches that infested my house were German cockroaches. How did I arrive at that conclusion? I consulted the Florida Department of Agriculture and learned that 50% of the cockroaches in Florida are German cockroaches and 70% of the cockroaches found in Pasco County, Florida, (where I live) are German cockroaches as well. I then generalized that nearly all of the cockroaches in Pasco County, Florida, are German Cockroaches. I also counted 10 cockroaches, of the tens of thousands infesting my house, and I noted that 7 of the 10 cockroaches were German cockroaches.

My cockroach infestation is analogous to the Great Rattle Snake Infestation of 2010. Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snakes infested my subdivision that year. There were 10,000 snakes located and killed- and 9,990 of them were Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snakes. Both infestations were similar and nearly every one of the invaders was of one particular type.

Questions:
1. Does Dale provide an informal or formal inductive argument? Why?

2. Does the sample size that Dale discusses logically lead to his conclusions? Why or why not?

3. Are the generalizations that Dale makes accurate based upon the sample size and confidence level? Why or why not?

4. Are the analogous arguments that Dale makes accurate based upon the sample size and confidence level? Why or why not?

Review 5

A 4 page “Review-of-the-Literature” (double-spaced; one inch margins, with font 12) for each section of assigned readings/materials is mandatory.  There are a total of 5 Reviews (one review for each section of the syllabus). A minimum of 4 pages (no more than 6 pages) is required for each review. Please note that these reviews are not meant for specific correction and individual feedback, but to ensure active and consistent reading of the assigned materials and effective engagement. You will not be graded based on agreement or disagreement with the authors or personal preferences, but on your overall grasp of the issues addressed and most importantly in accordance to the format provided below. A successful completion and timely submission of these 5 reviews constitute 70% of the grade (70 points in total; each review 14 points). The Reviews must follow this Format/Content:

  1. Content: All the readings and videos for each section of the syllabus should be covered in the Review for that section. One page minimum of the review must address the material from the Viotti and Kauppi textbook. The degree of attention and space you devote to the remaining required readings or videos is up to you.  The point is not to write a detailed summary of the readings and videos, but to identify the key and salient points/main ideas of each author’s findings and assertions. Your grade for each review will depend on: a) the comprehensiveness of your coverage, i.e., the inclusion of the assigned readings and required videos, b) meeting the minimum of required pages, and c) following the format provided here.
  2. Writing format: You can, but you do not need to, write these reviews in essay format; you can also simply name the author and identify key arguments/points that you think are most important in that particular reading or video using bullet format.
  3. Length: A minimum of a 4 page Review (no more than 6 pages) on the required readings/materials for each Section is mandatory. The Review must be typed double-spaced, with one-inch margins and font 12 format.
  4. Must Bold the names of authors/speakers.
  5. Read the readings and write the reviews in the sequence in which they appear on the Syllabus to maintain the flow of your engagement with each topic.
  6. Avoid long quotations.

Please note, all readings and videos must be addressed on the paper

Toomer Energy Drink Project

Complete Modules 1-5

MODULE 1

Requirement 1-1: What ideas do you think the management team might suggest to generate additional operating income in the months of November and December? Specifically, think about business actions they could take, or financial reporting choices they could make, to generate additional operating income.3 Consider management’s likely actions and choices under three different scenarios: (a) Management always behaves ethically, and would never take actions or make financial reporting choices that violate U.S. GAAP. (b) Management is willing to bend (but not break) U.S. GAAP. Actions that bend (but do not break) U.S. GAAP ‘‘are often viewed as aggressive if the tactics push the envelope and stretch the flexibility of GAAP beyond its intended limits … [however] without objective evidence, it’s difficult to distinguish between legitimate choices made within GAAP and earnings management’’ (Ortega and Grant 2003, 52). (c) Management is willing to act unethically, and would consider violating U.S. GAAP

MODULE 2

Requirement 2-1: In your own words, describe ‘‘earnings management’’ and the difference between ‘‘real’’ and ‘‘accrual’’ earnings management. If earnings management benefits management through increased bonuses, then does it harm any other stakeholders? If so, how? Requirement 2-2: For each idea the management team proposed to increase earnings, identify whether it is a real earnings management technique or an accrual earnings management technique. Requirement 2-3: Which idea(s) do you believe comply with U.S. GAAP? Requirement 2-4: Describe how action taken for each idea will result in an increase to U.S. GAAP operating income in the current period. Requirement 2-5: Discuss the impact of each idea on TED’s future operational and financial performance (i.e., in the next fiscal year and beyond). Requirement 2-6: Evaluate each idea using the following scale:6 1 ¼ Ethical practice. 2 ¼ Questionable practice. I would not say anything to management, but it makes me uncomfortable. 3 ¼ Minor infraction. Management should not engage in the practice again if the idea is implemented. 4 ¼ Serious infraction. Management should be severely punished if the idea is implemented. 5 ¼ Totally unethical. Management should be fired if the idea is implemented. Requirement 2-7: Instead of the current 2016 results, assume that TED-Europe’s financial performance far exceeded management’s stretch goal. In this case, would it be ethical to utilize earnings management techniques to reduce operating income (e.g., reschedule the routine maintenance on non-production machinery that is traditionally performed in January to December of the current year)? Explain. What impact would this type of earnings management have on future financial performance? Why might management be incentivized to engage in incomedecreasing earnings management? Requirement 2-8: Should management’s bonuses drive their business decision-making? Their financial reporting choices?
