2.2 SWOT Analysis:

There are many strengths of Bass Pro Shops. It is an American privately owned retailer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor recreation merchandise. Spreading out 177 retailer store (including 82 Cabela’s) in the US and Canada so far, so it has strong brand name. It owns many subsidiaries such as Cabela’s, Tracker Boats, Big Cedar Lodge, and Redhead, etc.

The company is an outdoor specialty store that they have comprehensive product goods. Not only sell clothes, camping gear, but also sell speedboats, canoes, shotguns, pistols, bows and arrows, and the wall decoration in the store is made up of some deer, cows, foxes, etc. Also, their products are variety with many price points on different lines so that can attract different consumer groups. On the whole, they have stable sales force and privately owned. Their employees are very loyalty, so they have good customer service.

However, the shop still has some weakness. Compare to their competitors, their cost is higher and lack specialty items. With the changes of the times, the way they used are still old fashioned management way. For example, displays lack creative innovation. Their products did not focus on high quality, so consumers are easy to revert to competitors and be substitute.

Nowadays, the revenue of the Sports& outdoor segment is expected to be raised in South Africa. Moreover, bass pro shop has stable finance. So it is a good opportunity to expand overseas. It can start to expand online shop. With the technology improves, many people prefer to buy online. The action not only can predict consumer response but also all South African can purchase.

South Africa has many substitute shops, it has many competitors such as Massmart, Walmart. Due to bass pro shop has limited products and lack specialty, it is easy to substitute.Bass Pro can develop a strong advertising and marketing strategy with online shoppers in these foreign markets. Try to be more special and different with others.

2.3 Competitoranalysis:

There are many competitors in South Africa, such as Walmart, Sportsman warehouse,Cape Union Mart, safari outdoor, and so on. The below is analysis for each company:

Walmartoperates more than 400 stores in South Africa and 12 other sub-Saharan countries. Massmart is the second-largest distributor of consumer goods in Africa. It not only focus on hunting or fishing, but also food, pharmacy, Furniture, and so on. It is very popular because their price is reasonable and cheap. Speaking of location, Walmart is convenient to find and it may cause that consumers do not want to change their preference. Walmart need to address the strong intensity of the threat of new entrants. New entry of retail firms may easily achieved even in the presence of giants like Walmart.

The high availability of substitutes and the low costs of their product offerings further increase the influence of substitutes against the company.

Sportsman warehouse, the largest competitor chain, specializes in a wide range of sporting equipment in South African. They have over 25 stores located countrywide. To bass pro shop, it is a tricky competitor- All sportsman Warehouse branded products are made from local as well as international manufacturers. Their products adhere to high standards of quality and excellence. To customers, they want to buy the best offerings available by paying the minimum price as possible. If Sportsman’s Warehouse Holdings, Inc. keep on coming up with new products then it can limit the bargaining power of buyers

There is some advantage of this company-Days inventory is higher than competitors – making the company raise more capital to invest in the channel. This can impact the long-term growth of the company. Their staffs are required to attend training sessions regularlyto improve their sport knowledge and performance. Moreover, the company has a dedicated customer relationship management department that achieves high levels of customer satisfaction among existing customers, and good brand equity among potential customers.

Cape Union Marthas been equipping South African adventurers since 1933, and is South Africa’s favorite outdoor adventure store. The company is started out as army and navy types. It is rated as the reader’s favorite outdoor retail brand. Stocking everything one needs for outdoor pursuits – including hiking, camping, trail running, mountain biking, snow sports, travel and more. Their main consumers supplied visiting troops with some of the luxuries and necessities associated with the military. Passing whaling ships and foreign fishermen were also catered for with a unique array of merchandise from around the world.

They view their employees as one of the most important core, so they treat their employees very well. Then employees offer very good customer service. However, their cost is higher than others. They invested heavily in employee training, also, the number of employees far exceeds that of other retailers. So it spends more on the average salary compared to others in the sector.

SAFARI OUTDOOR (Pty) Ltd. is the largest Hunting and Safari related shop in South Africa with a wide range of products catering for every hunter or nature lover’s needs. They stock the largest range of rifles, optics, reloading equipment, bullets and all other components needed for hunting and outdoor safari activities. There are four stores which located in South Africa. You can sell or trade your old guns at Safari Outdoor. However, their service is not as good as others that many customers complaint their refund policy are very poor. Employees did not explain clearly and cause serious misunderstanding for customers. For example, employee did not informed that refund money needs to take 2 weeks work day if they used debit card. The part is their biggest problem so far. ( Undone)

In conclusion, Walmart belongs to much amateur in the field of outdoor sports. Because their product lines including pharmacy, foods, clothes, and so on, their consumer line is wider than others. Compare to other three competitors, their customers may not much care about the quality is good or bad in outdoor sports field. However, all three competitors have fixed customer groups in South Africa. If bass pro shop or other global companies want to expand their company here, they need to do more commercial via TV or online to advertise their products, expanding the market on the basis of convenience, location, specialty, and other factors.

Discussion Questions #2, #4, #11, #13 and #16:

2. If you were a guard, what type of guard would you have become? How sure are you?.

4. If you were a prisoner, would you have been able to endure the experience? What would you have done differently than those subjects did? If you were imprisoned in a “real” prison for five years or more, could you take it?

11. Moving beyond physical prisons built of steel and concrete, what psychological prisons do we create for ourselves and others? If prisons are seen as forms of control which limit individual freedom, how do they differ from the prisons we create through racism, sexism, ageism, poverty, and other social institutions? Extend your discussion to focus on:

13. How do the ethical dilemmas in this research compare with the ethical issues raised by Stanley Milgram’s obedience experiments? Would it be better if these studies had never been done?

16 Knowing what this research says about the power of prison situations to have a corrosive effect on human nature, what recommendations would you make about changing the correctional system in your country?

Ford – Ford Unlearn

Source: Newswork

“Unlearn signalled to the UK that they needed to ‘let go of what they know’ about Ford and our media buying was no different. With exciting formats such as the Super Panorama and activity across desktop, mobile and print we not only reached the Aspirer audience, we made them Unlearn” what newsbrands can do.”

Ford launched the Unlearn campaign to change the way audiences think about the brand in Britain, using outstanding print formats to encourage re-evaluation of preconceptions.

With new market entrants from Korea changing consumers’ car expectations, Ford set out to persuade consumers to #Unlearn what Ford means to them by using newspapers to make an impact and inspire consumers – in a word, to be less “vanilla”.

The campaign launched with an eight-page super panorama ad on The Sunday Telegraph to grab attention, following up with a ’cover special’ on The Daily Telegraph the following weekend. High impact homepage takeovers served to sustain interest in the campaign, with the activity owning an entire day of the weekend, every weekend for the campaign period with a homepage takeover of either The Times, The Sun, The Sunday Times’ Driving Channel or The Sun’s motors channel.

By utilising publication and creative agency capabilities to produce impactful and memorable formats for Ford, Mindshare ensured that the #Unlearn rebrand created stand-out in the market. To sustain the campaign messaging, it built frequency in national press and across lifestyle magazines and supplements, where the aspirer audience would not usually expect to see the Ford brand.

Results

The Sunday Telegraph Super Panorama was an agency media first.

The overall reach and frequency for the print campaign was over 60% of ABC1 adults at a frequency of over 3.00 – equivalent to over 16,000,000 people.

The number of people who agreed with the statement ’Ford Motor Company is changing for the better’ doubled over the four-week period.

In six weeks, awareness to the term ’Unlearn’ equaled that of other campaigns that had run over 30 years.

Questions

1. What is the primary purpose of Ford’s Unlearn advertising campaign?

2. How did the advertising campaign affect consumers’ perceptions on Ford?

3. Do you agree or disagree that Ford’s Unlearn campaign is effective? Please explain.

4. What is the role of “creativity” in this advertising campaign?
