Deliverable 6 – Analysis with Correlation and Regression

Assignment Content

  1. Competency
Determine the linear correlation and regression equation between two variables to make predictions for the dependent variable.

    Scenario
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the probability of a magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquake in the Greater Bay Area is 63%, about 2 out of 3, in the next 30 years. In April 2008, scientists and engineers released a new earthquake forecast for the State of California called the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF).

As a junior analyst at the USGS, you are tasked to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support the claim of a linear correlation between the magnitudes and depths from the earthquakes. Your deliverables will be a PowerPoint presentation you will create summarizing your findings and an excel document to show your work.

    Concepts Being Studied

    • Correlation and regression
    • Creating scatterplots
    • Constructing and interpreting a Hypothesis Test for Correlation using r as the test statistic
    • You are given a spreadsheet that contains the following information:
    • Magnitude measured on the Richter scale
    • Depth in km
    • Deliverable 6 – Analysis with Correlation and Regression.xlsx

Using the spreadsheet, you will answer the problems below in a PowerPoint presentation.

      What to Submit
The PowerPoint presentation should answer and explain the following questions based on the spreadsheet provided above.

    • Slide 1: Title slide
    • Slide 2: Introduce your scenario and data set including the variables provided.
    • Slide 3: Construct a scatterplot of the two variables provided in the spreadsheet. Include a description of what you see in the scatterplot.
    • Slide 4: Find the value of the linear correlation coefficient r and the critical value of r using α = 0.05. Include an explanation on how you found those values.
    • Slide 5: Determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support the claim of a linear correlation between the magnitudes and the depths from the earthquakes. Explain.
    • Slide 6: Find the regression equation. Let the predictor (x) variable be the magnitude. Identify the slope and the y-intercept within your regression equation.
    • Slide 7: Is the equation a good model? Explain. What would be the best predicted depth of an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.0? Include the correct units.
    • Slide 8: Conclude by recapping your ideas by summarizing the information presented in context of the scenario.
    • Along with your PowerPoint presentation, you should include your Excel document which shows all calculations.

Consider short-term and long-term impacts, ommunity to assist with preterm infants and their families

 Topic 1 DQ 1

Low weight classified as preterm birth is a baby born with the gestational age of fewer than 37 weeks and less than 2500g in birth weight(WHO, 2018).Aside from the numerous threats in growth and maturity, low birth weight babies do experience disruption in the brain development process, and as a result, they are at greater risk for varieties of health problems such as developmental delay, psychological and intellectual functioning in the growth process.(WHO, 2018)

Effect of Low Birthweight on Families and Communities:

  • Babies might not adjust well to an external environment.
  • The care for these babies puts financial burdens on immediate families and communities where resources are needed to support and care for these children.
  • Parents feel overwhelmed and emotionally and psychologically drained providing care.
  • Balancing caring for a baby with siblings is difficult for parents.
  • Frequent Hospitalization is necessary, and sometimes babies are kept in neonatal intensive care units.
  • Babies are prone to developing neurological defects, which might result in an intellectual and mental delay.
  • Infection and other disease risks are high due to organs not adequately developed at birth, leading to frequent visits to the doctor(WHO, 2018).

Short-term Impact

  • Low birth weight babies are prone to poor thermoregulation.
  • The infection rate is very high, regular use of medications.
  • Above-average use of health services.
  • Risk for hypoglycemia.
  • Risk for hypoxia.
  • Poor feedingJaundice.
  • Breathing problems due to premature lungs developmentIntraventricular hemorrhage likelihood(WHO, 2018).

Long-Term Impact

  • Decrease in neurological development and functions due to brain injury and brain development.
  • Anatomical or functional abnormalities and very limited in activities.
  • Risk for retinopathy of prematurity, i.e., one eye disease common with low birth weight babies.
  • Risk for mental retardation and developmental disabilities.Risk for cerebral palsy(WHO, 2018).

Socioeconomic Implications

The care for premature babies could have adverse financial and social effects on both the parents, immediate families, and the communities trying to assist with the respect for the baby(March of Dimes, 2018)

Comorbidities:

The baby might develop other health issues such as:Hypertension(cardiovascular); heart disease.DiabetesOverweight/obese Metabolic syndromeIntellectual and developmental disabilities(March of Dimes, 2018)

According to the research studies conducted at the Washington state university graduate program, it was discovered that Filipino, Asian Indian, non-Hispanic black women have the highest incidences of low birth weight. Also, Chinese, Korean, and non-Hispanic white women have the lowest incidence of low birth weight. These disparities exist due to socioeconomic factors, little or no access to healthcare, maternal education, smoking, inadequate prenatal care, and pregnancy complication such as pregnancy-induced hypertension, obesity, and gestational diabetes among the high-risk population(University of Washington [School of Public Health], 2017)

There are various support groups in our community providing parents and families with low birth babies. An example is the children’s healthcare of Atlanta in Georgia, where support such as Kangaroo mother care, exclusive breastfeeding, and warmth are provided to these babies. They also provide families with community home care referrals for follow-up care.

What do I Know About Where I Live?

For this discussion, you are to use the following website: https://www.census.gov/acs/www/data/data-tables-and-tools/data-profiles/2017/ (Links to an external site.)

  • On the landing page, type in the name of your state, and then the name of your city or place.
  • Click on “Get Data Profile”.
  • On the new page, you will see links to 4 sets of information on your area:
    • Social
    • Education
    • Housing
    • Demographic
  • Choose any two variables you think might be related and find them by  using the links to the related set.  In the tables, locate the  variables you chose to work with. For example, you could use the number  of rooms (in a house) under Housing and household incomes and benefits  under Economy.
  • Find the values for each of your two variables for several years.  For example, you might use the number of rooms and household income for  the years 2012- 2017.
  • Use Excel to make a scatterplot and to find the correlation  coefficient. You should then have 6 points on the scatterplot, one for  each year.

Share your scatterplot and correlation coefficient in your post and use them to address the following in your discussion post:

  • Why did you think a relationship exists between the two variables you chose?
  • Based on the Excel scatterplot and output
    • State what type of relationship exists:  Negative, positive, or none.
    • Describe the relationship in words including what happens to one as  the other changes. For example, as the number of rooms in a house  increases, does the family income increase as well?
  • Does the statistical information you obtained support or refute your alternative hypothesis that a relationship exists?
    • How?
    • If you did not find a relationship, why do you think that is?
  • What is the value to knowing there is a correlation between the  variables? For example, what businesses might flourish in a wealthy  area?
  • Would another variable better explain the relationship?
  • How might the city use such information to make improvements?  For  example, if you found a relationship between crime and poverty would it  make sense to make addressing poverty a priority?
  • Can you conclude that one variable is causing the other? Why or why not?

Macbeth by William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Macbeth, or Macbeth, is one of his more limited misfortunes and was presumably composed between 1599-1606. Shakespeare wrote the play during the rule of James V1, who was a benefactor of the dramatist’s acting organization. Of the entirety of his plays, Macbeth may best mirror Shakespeare’s relationship with sovereign respectability.

The play is set basically in Scotland, and follows the personality of Macbeth, an intense Scottish general, as he becomes eager for power and insane with political aspiration. Shakespeare splendidly depicts Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s descending winding as they battle with the rebuffing physical and mental impacts of insatiability.

The main demonstration starts during a wild rainstorm, as three witches conclude they will next meet with Macbeth, a general adulated for his fortitude from the Scottish armed force. The witches tell Macbeth and his kindred general and companion Banquo their predictions about the men’s future. Their reactions appear to demonstrate that Macbeth will turn out to be initial a “Thame of Glamis” and a “Thame of Cawdor,” and afterward will become “Ruler in the future.”

Leaving the two men addressing to enigmatic predictions, the thane Ross shows up upon the scene and educates in Shakespeare’s Macbeth that he is currently the Thane of Cawdor, as the past thane has been executed for injustice. With the witches’ first prescience satisfied, Macbeth, from the outset suspicious, starts to envision himself as acquiring the seat.

Macbeth and Banquo are invited by King Duncan, and he lauds them for their courage in fight and reports that he might want to go through the night at Macbeth’s palace. Lord Duncan likewise reports that his child, Malcolm, will be his beneficiary, which Macbeth feels further requires his fast activity to take the seat. Composing ahead to his significant other, Macbeth admits the anecdote about the witches’ predictions. Woman Macbeth, with deceitful covetousness for the seat, challenges her better half’s masculinity for his hesitance in murdering the ruler and convinces him to slaughter King Duncan that very evening. They plan on inebriating the King’s chamberlains and afterward outlining them for the homicide.

Act two starts with Macbeth, actually addressing himself, wounds King Duncan. He is so upset by his own behavior that Lady Macbeth assumes responsibility for outlining the workers. The following morning, when Duncan’s body is found, his children escape, expecting that they are likewise in harm’s way. Their flight makes them suspect as Macbeth accepts the seat. Banquo, recalling the witch’s prediction, gets dubious of Macbeth’s climb.

Macbeth’s interior unrest develops and he arranges his companion Banquo murdered. Banquo’s phantom at that point frequents him. Visitors watching Macbeth raving at a vacant seat that holds the apparition of Banquo no one but he can see dread Macbeth has gone crazy, yet Lady Macbeth persuades them in any case. Notwithstanding, Macbeth is without a doubt plummeting into franticness and he goes again to visit the three witches for answers to his inquiries concerning the predictions. They produce horrendous ghosts yet guarantee him he is protected from risk. Maybe floated by a feeling that all is well with the world, Macbeth submits another horrendous demonstration and orders the homicide of Macduff, the aristocrat who found Duncan dead. Since Macduff has escaped to England, Macbeth arranges his whole family murdered.

Woman Macbeth’s heart gets up to speed to her significant other and she gets wiped out with blame, fantasizing bloodstains on her hands. She ends it all in her franticness, the information on which sends Macbeth into a profound sadness. Macduff, knowing about his family’s homicide, promises retribution. Along with Duncan’s child Malcolm and military, they ride back to Scotland. Macbeth, excessively certain of his own force, is struck down and executed by Macduff, and Malcolm acquires his legitimate seat.
