Political Thought

 Step 1: Case Scenario

Read the following case first; then proceed to the next steps.

Thomas is a new addition to your company. He is an excellent worker and has been named employee of the month four times, and just this past week he was named employee of the year. Thomas is up for his first yearly evaluation; and as part of the process, the human resources department reviews his employment file. Upon reviewing Thomas’ file it comes to light that he was not completely truthful on his resume. The inconsistency does not involve his work history or the training he has to make him qualified to do his job. What the human resources department discovers is that Thomas claims some educational success that is untrue. The policy of the company is “Any employee that has been found to make false or misleading statements to the company during the hiring process in order to obtain a position within the company shall be terminated.”

Step 2: Reflection Part

Think about the following:

  • If you are in charge of Human Resources for this company, what would you do?
  • Does it matter if you know Thomas personally?

After you have thought through your position on this scenario, apply your thinking to this week’s philosophers and complete Step 3 – the writing part of this assignment.

Step 3: Writing Part

For the Module 02 Assignment, in 2-3 pages share your insights and support as you address the following areas in your paper:

  1. In the introduction (1-2 paragraphs), summarize how Aristotle and the religious philosophers (Augustine and Aquinas) would respond to this case if they were confronted with this situation.
  2. In the analysis section (2-3 paragraphs), describe how these philosophers might apply fairness and compromise to this situation. Support your analysis with quotes or paraphrases from the philosophers.
  3. In the application of the philosophy (1-2 paragraphs), share your recommendations for how this case could be solved. Use APA format and citation when writing your assignment and incorporate research/support from credible sources.

Remember – Assignment is based on the scenario and with Aristotle the philosopher

    Assignment:

    Parse’s Human Becoming Theory

Write a 1250-1500 word APA paper addressing each of the following points. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. Separate each section in your paper with a clear heading that allows your professor to know which bullet you are addressing in that section of your paper. Support your ideas with at least two (2) sources and your textbook using citations in your essay. Make sure to cite using the APA writing style for the essay. The cover page and reference page in correct APA do not count towards the minimum word amount. Review the rubric criteria for this assignment.

    Case Study

The hospice nurse sat with Ann’s husband, Ben. Ann was resting quietly as the increased dosage of IV pain medication gradually reached its therapeutic level. Ben turned his head and slowly turned, looking out the room’s only window. As he glanced up, a small flicker of light caught his breath. It was a shooting star. A tear fell from the corner of his eye and he turned to Ann. The nurse sensed that something significant to Ann and Ben was unfolding. Shuffling to Ann’s bedside, he took her small fragile hand in his. These hands had rocked cradles, burped babies, and groomed the horses she loved to ride. Gently holding her hand, he turned to the nurse. “She would ride like the wind was chasing her.” Looking back to Ann his voice broke; choking back tears “Ann, Ann I saw Jessie…Jessie is calling.” Ben turned “Jessie was our daughter. She died having a baby that was too big. When she died it was a pitch-black night. Cold, so cold, the baby died too, a little boy, named him Abe, Jr. after Jessie’s husband. I took Ann outside so she could cry to God above and there in this dark sky we saw two falling stars…together…just falling. We knew it had to be Jessie and Abe…two angels to light up the night.” Ben turned back as a deep sigh escaped from Ann’s lips. A soft smile remained as she joined Jessie and Abe.

    • Based on this case study how would the nurse actualize Parse’s theory of Human Becoming?
    • What are characteristics of a human becoming nurse?  What are strengths and weaknesses to this theory of nursing?
    • What challenges exist for healthcare institutions to switch to this nursing approach?
    • How might Parse’s understanding of transcendence guide the nurse, as Ann’s death became a reality to Ben?
    • From the nursing theories we have discussed, what additional theory would you apply to this case study? Develop a plan of care to include both nursing theories (be specific and provide reasons)

    Module 3 Discussion Assignment

    Details Chapter 3

Read the following New York Times article before responding to discussion questions:

Cave, D. (2009). Women at arms: A combat role, and anguish too. The New York Times. Online at: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/us/01trauma.html (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Article Summary: PTSD and Women Soldiers

The focus on PTSD and American combat veterans has been primarily on men. That is because, technically at least, women had never served in combat. But current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan give new meaning to the term “combat.” No longer are soldiers just marching in battalions or serving on ship. They are walking or driving down city streets (in Iraq) or patrolling mountain ranges and caves, or driving down forsaken mountainous dirt roads, waiting for the next improvised explosive device to detonate underneath them or a rocket-propelled grenade to assault them from above. No, you don’t have to be labeled as being in “combat” to face horrific dangers in these wars.

Women are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from PTSD as severe as their male counterparts. But we don’t hear about it much in the news (though, the Veteran’s Administration does recognize it and treat the women, of course). That is, until The New York Times ran a special story on women war veterans and PTSD, part of a series of stories about women at war. The article concludes that women cope with PTSD differently, in part because their families, friends, and the public don’t expect women to have been in “combat” or subjected to conditions that could produce PTSD. Another factor is that when individuals with PTSD are women, people will likely have little patience with them if they burst out in anger or punch a hole in a wall or otherwise act out with aggression, as some men with PTSD do. Gender roles are different for men and women warriors. In addition, while deployed, women don’t have many other women for emotional support–they are outnumbered by men. Men and women share the same types of feelings but express them differently. Often what a woman in distress needs is another woman who shares her communication style. Sadly, studies have found that women veterans seeking compensation for PTSD as a war-related injury are held to a much higher standard than men. “You weren’t in combat,” “You didn’t kill anyone,” are some of the excuses that women veterans have heard from the military and the Veteran’s Administration. As the story reports, at least 3,000 women with diagnosed PTSD have been refused compensation by the VA.

    Discussion Questions:

    1. Locate a recent article on PTSD and American combats. The FSW library (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. is a great resource.

    2. Summarize the article in two-three paragraphs.

    3. In your conclusion, explain if you agree or disagree with the article and what would you propose to help veterans suffering from PTSD? Use the article summary above as a formatting guideline or example.

    Guidelines

Before you begin, remember to review the class Discussion Board Guidelines.

Your original post, in response to the discussion prompt above, should contain a minimum of 125 words, not including restatement of questions or reference sections. Utilize critical thinking, and support your work with additional resources as applicable.

In addition, read and respond to the post of one peer/classmate. Your response must be 100 words, substantive, and expand the discussion.

Finally, any content that is paraphrased, summarized or quoted in your discussion post or response must be must be cited using APA format. For more information on APA format, review the OWL Guide: APA General Format

    Aircraft Maneuvering Performance

For your independent project, create an instructional presentation. Create a V-G diagram specific to your aircraft “Cessna 172” at a selected weight and atmospheric condition and explain how the V-G diagram can be utilized to identify specific maneuvering parameters. For inputs on how the V-G diagram is developed, review the discussion in the Flight Theory and Aerodynamics book (Dole, Lewis, Badick, & Johnson, 2017, pp. 229-235)

    1. At a minimum cover the following aspects:
      • Positive and negative limiting load factor (i.e., the maximum G allowed for your aircraft)
      • Stall speeds at 1, 2, 3, and so on G up to the maximum positive G (at your selected weight)
      • Ultimate load factor (ULF)
      • Positive ultimate load (i.e., the actual force [lbs]) at the selected weight
      • Maneuvering speed
      • The bank angle associated with the positive limiting load factor
      • For the specific maneuvering speed of your aircraft identified above, explain how to numerically find (provide the specific example and values) the associated turn rate and radius utilizing both of the following methods:
      • Rate and radius formula
      • The turn performance diagram (Figure 2.29 in Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators, Hurt, 1965, p. 179 or Figure 13.14, Dole et al., 2017, p. 239).

As in previous assignments, you will need to research a variety of additional information such as required formulas and pertinent aircraft data and/or assume a few parameters for your aircraft. Please make sure to detail those:

    1. Required Formulas:
      • Bank angle to G relationship
      • Turn rate and radius
      • Stall speed under elevated G / bank
    2. Necessary aircraft information:
      • Limiting load factors (positive and negative) for your example aircraft (from research)
      • Assumed aircraft weight
    3. Previous information:
      • Utilize your previous module work to find 1G stall speed for your selected weight
      • Assume atmospheric conditions

Again, the emphasis in this project task is on explaining your methodology as if you attempted to instruct someone unfamiliar with the aerodynamic details and relationships. Therefore, make sure to detail all assumptions, all formulas used, and all steps that were taken.

As previously, you are encouraged to utilize appropriate computational software such as Excel® or MatLab®

This is just to give you a framework and idea of what is required for this assignment.

Grading is based on 5 criteria: Oral Presentation Style; Data on your topic; Visuals; Critical Thinking/Worldview Analysis; Recommendations for Solutions.

    Practice ‘Inspire a Shared Vision’

For this journal entry, you will identify an aspect of personal leadership that currently has room for improvement, and practice actions to help you strengthen or develop in that area. For this journal entry, complete the following steps:

    • Review the Inspire a Shared Vision data summary (Page# 8- document “Fenil_Patel_1”)in your SLPI 360 Individual Feedback Report.
    • Record your overall score from the Student Leadership Practices Inventory for Inspire a Shared Vision.
    • Of the six leadership behaviors that are part of Inspire a Shared Vision, identify the statement that one of your observers indicated you engage in most frequently. If there is a tie score between two or more behaviors, then indicate the one in which you feel is most accurate.
    • Identify the leadership behavior statement that your observers felt you engaged in least often. If there is a tie score between two or more behaviors, then indicate the one in which you feel is most accurate.
    • Identify at least one action that you can practice this week to strengthen your least engaged in leadership behavior. Review the “Take Action” sections of Chapters 3 and 4 (at the very end of the chapters) in The Student Leadership Challenge for suggestions to help you become a better leader.
    • Then implement your plan and describe what you did and the outcomes of your actions. This must be a novel action you initiate for this assignment; you cannot describe a past example. This part of the assignment is worth the most points

To successfully complete this assignment, view the Module 3 Journal Rubric document

    Discussion: Searching Databases

When you decide to purchase a new car, you first decide what is important to you. If mileage and dependability are the important factors, you will search for data focused more on these factors and less on color options and sound systems.

The same holds true when searching for research evidence to guide your clinical inquiry and professional decisions. Developing a formula for an answerable, researchable question that addresses your need will make the search process much more effective. One such formula is the PICO(T) format.

In this Discussion, you will transform a clinical inquiry into a searchable question in PICO(T) format, so you can search the electronic databases more effectively and efficiently. You will share this PICO(T) question and examine strategies you might use to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question.

    To Prepare:

    • Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
    • Review the materials offering guidance on using databases, performing keyword searches, and developing PICO(T) questions provided in the Resources.
    • Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least two different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest. You should not be using systematic reviews for this assignment, select original research articles.
    • Review the Resources for guidance and develop a PICO(T) question of interest to you for further study. It is suggested that an Intervention-type PICOT question be developed as these seem to work best for this course.
By Day 3 of Week 4

Post a brief description of your clinical issue of interest. This clinical issue will remain the same for the entire course and will be the basis for the development of your PICOT question. Describe your search results in terms of the number of articles returned on original research and how this changed as you added search terms using your Boolean operators. Finally, explain strategies you might make to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question. Be specific and provide examples.

    Terrorism

As the author of your text has argued, terrorism is the foundation of conflict between Israel and Palestine. Although terrorism has expanded over the past 30 years beyond the Middle East, it remains at the center of the continued conflicts between Israel and its neighbors. Ever since its founding in 1948, the state of Israel has faced the threat of terror attacks from rejectionist organizations such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah. Because these groups haven’t been able to defeat Israel on the battlefield, they’ve targeted Israeli citizens in an attempt to subvert the national will.

As we’ve learned, terrorist violence aims to undermine the personal security of civilians, to sow fear and trepidation, and to sap public morale in order to pressure decision makers to make political concessions. The primary goals of Israeli counterterrorism strategy are to prevent terrorists from influencing the national agenda and to preserve the psychological resilience of the civilian population.

On the other hand, Israel has been accused by its critics of using tactics that are nothing short of inhumane. Some of these tactics can be found listed on page 218 of your text and others may be reviewed in this article by Sami Kishawi: “Controversial, Illegal, and Documented: Israeli Military Strategies in Gaza.”

Your assignment for this project is to compose a five- to six-page essay that discusses and analyzes these complex issues in terms of justice and political policy. You should touch on the following:

    • Are the tactics used by Israel a      form of terrorism similar to that being used by its enemies? If so, why,      and what are the implications for future negotiations? If not, why not?      What explains the difference between the two policy positions?
    • In terms of the extremists found      on each side of the conflict, what steps should be taken to lessen the      influence of the extremists? Why?
    • Is compromise a desirable      solution? If so, why? What appearance would reasonable compromise take in      this region of the world?
    • If compromise isn’t an option,      should the conflict be resolved by military victory of one side over the      other? Why or why not?
    • What role should the United States      and other Western nations play in this controversy and why?
