Course Reflection

During this session, we looked at several topics on Strategic IT planning and strategy. We examined researchers, models, and issues in the area. As you get closer to starting your own dissertation, you will need to choose a topic in your first dissertation class DSRT 736, so it is essential to start preparing. This week, let us take a look at some topics to consider, and by the end of the week, we could have several ideas for dissertation topics. Since you have already examined several research articles, another way would be to examine previous dissertations in these areas. Visit the University of Cumberlands’ library, go to the Dissertation Database, and locate an interesting topic on IT strategy, or examine a model presented this term. Here are some pointers that will help critically evaluate some viable topics.

• Is the topic attainable for a first-time dissertation student?

• Is the problem rooted in the literature?

• Is the research empirical, i.e., is there a survey, is there an interview guide, has the data been analyzed via some statistical tool?

• Is there a theoretical model or framework discussed?

Discuss the topic, the problem the model has been used in the research, and any present findings. Do not read the entire dissertation, as the abstract and chapter one introduction should give a clear understanding of the research.

Homework Assignment 4

Due in Week 4 and worth 30 points

Discuss one (1) project where you used a problem-solving approach to address what turned out to be common-cause variation, or where you used a process improvement approach to deal with a special cause.

If you do not have a personal experience that echoes either of these situations, you may use the Internet to search for a case that reflects either of these situations.

Examples:

  • one’s personal investment strategy since 2008
  • reducing waiting times at the local hospital or emergency room
  • reducing difficulties trying to connect to a Wi-Fi Internet provider

Answer the following questions in the space provided below:

  1. Describe the experience in the project.
  2. What were the solutions used to address the problem?
  3. Was the case you described a special-cause or common-cause?
  4. Do you feel the solution or approach used appropriate for the cause?
  5. What would you do if you could do it again?
  6. What conclusions can you draw from the problem-solving or process-improvement techniques?

Note: You may create and / or make all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment. In your original work, you may use aspects of existing processes from either your current or a former place of employment. However, you must remove any and all identifying information that would enable someone to discern the organization(s) that you have used.

Reasons for Creating Artifacts

  1. In the first column, list three cultures you are a part of or that you identify strongly with, and rank them from most to least significant in your life. These can be national, ethnic, religious, regional, or local, and they can include subcultures or groups related to your personal interests.
  2. In the second column, identify one representative object for each of the cultures you identify with on your list.
  3. In a few words, explain how the cultural object reflects the culture in which it exists. Consider which aspects of culture have relevance for each artifact: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on.

To complete the second table, select three reasons for creating an artifact from the resources provided, or provide your own reasons.

  1. In the first column, state the reason for creating an artifact.
  2. In the second column, provide an example of an artifact that could have been created for the reason presented.
  3. In the third column, state whether the artifact was created by an individual or a group, and provide the name(s) of the creator(s).
  4. Select one of the artifacts listed and answer one of the questions following the worksheet:
  • Do you believe the creator was successful in achieving their purpose? OR
  • How do you think the artifact and the culture in which it was created could have influenced each other?

If you talk about a possible poor health outcome, do you believe that outcome will occur? Do you believe eye contact and personal contact should be avoided?

You would have a difficult time practicing as a nurse if you believed these to be true. But they are very real beliefs in some cultures.

Differences in cultural beliefs, subcultures, religion, ethnic customs, dietary customs, language, and a host of other factors contribute to the complex environment that surrounds global healthcare issues. Failure to understand and account for these differences can create a gulf between practitioners and the public they serve.

In this Assignment, you will examine a global health issue and consider the approach to this issue by the United States and by one other country.

To Prepare:

  • Review the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global health agenda and select one global health issue to focus on for this Assignment.
  • Select at least one additional country to compare to the U.S. for this Assignment.
  • Reflect on how the global health issue you selected is approached in the U.S. and in the additional country you selected.
  • Review and download the Global Health Comparison Matrix provided in the Resources.

The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Global Health Comparison Matrix; 1-page Plan for Social Change)

Part 1: Global Health Comparison Matrix

Focusing on the country you selected and the U.S., complete the Global Health Comparison Matrix. Be sure to address the following:

  • Consider the U.S. national/federal health policies that have been adapted for the global health issue you selected from the WHO global health agenda. Compare these policies to the additional country you selected for study.
  • Explain the strengths and weaknesses of each policy.
  • Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the global health issue you selected. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Using the WHO’s Organization’s global health agenda as well as the results of your own research, analyze how each country’s government addresses cost, quality, and access to the global health issue selected.
  • Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the health of the global population. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the role of the nurse in each country.
  • Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. Be specific and provide examples.

Part 2: A Plan for Social Change

Reflect on the global health policy comparison and analysis you conducted in Part 1 of the Assignment and the impact that global health issues may have on the world, the U.S., your community, as well as your practice as a nurse leader.

In a 1-page response, create a plan for social change that incorporates a global perspective or lens into your local practice and role as a nurse leader.

  • Explain how you would advocate for the incorporation of a global perspective or lens into your local practice and role as a nurse leader.
  • Explain how the incorporation of a global perspective or lens might impact your local practice and role as a nurse leader.
  • Explain how the incorporation of a global perspective or lens into your local practice as a nurse leader represents and contributes to social change. Be specific and provide examples

methodology

A project plan is a document created at the beginning of the project lifecycle that gives stakeholders and everyone else involved a clear idea of what the project will entail in terms of effort, time, cost, and anticipated results.

The methodology or approach the project manager plans to use to manage the project must be identified before the project plan can be created. Choosing a methodology is important because a methodology provides the framework—that is, an overall process and suggested documents and deliverables—that will guide project development from beginning to end. Some project methodologies are more appropriate for some types of projects than for others.

Over the next few weeks you will develop pieces of a project plan. This week you will determine your methodology based on project requirements and the components needed in your plan.

Read the Manage Your Health Inc. Case Study and complete the assignment below.

Consider the differences between Agile and waterfall.

Select 1 methodology to use for a project plan for this initiative.

Create a simplified project plan such as the examples listed in the “Tips” section below. Include, at least, the following criteria:

  • Name of task
  • Duration
  • Predecessors
  • Notes

After completing your simplified project plan, write a 175-word paragraph and complete the following:

  • Define which methodology, Agile or waterfall, is most appropriate for this project. Why? Cite at least 2 sources to support your rationale.
  • Describe the following roles for this project: project manager, project sponsor, business analyst, and scrum master or program manager.

You may create your simplified project plan using Microsoft® Excel® or another software application of your choice.

Tips:
  • Research additional project plan examples online.
  • Consider the application characteristics and requirements when building your project plan. For example, the app will require a search feature so employees can search for available programs, will require security to protect personal information, etc., which will help with the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Note: This information will be helpful in the Wk 2 – Apply: Work Breakdown Structure assignment.
  • Read the 2 linked examples of project plans implemented as Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheets: Example Plan A and Example Plan B. Use these as guides in creating your own draft project plan. Notice the differences between these 2 examples in terms of length (overall and task length), structure of the work breakdown (iterative vs. non-iterative), and methodology.

Your submission must include the following information in the following format:

DEFINITION: a brief definition of the key term – (the definition should come from the article)

SUMMARY: Summarize the article in your own words- this should be in the 150-word range. Be sure to note the article’s author, note their credentials and why we should put any weight behind his/her opinions, research, or findings regarding the key term.

DISCUSSION: Using 300-words, write a brief discussion, in your own words of how the article relates to the selected key term. Your Marketing Director has been invited to make a presentation to a group of domestic consumer marketers. The conference, ‘Going global, acting local – communicating global brands to global markets’ aims to encourage home businesses to take their brands abroad.

The audience will include marketing consultants, company marketing personnel and researchers. She has asked you to carry out some research for her and present her with a report on this topic area, from which she will put together her presentation. This should be clear and concise and identify the main points that she should make. The report should be based on one chosen brand only.

You will need to help her by looking at academic research.

The report should outline your responses to the following issues:

1. Discuss global, local and glocal strategies towards two of the following areas:

• Product

• Price

• Distribution

• Promotion

Use marketing theory when discussing globalization, localization and glocalization within the context of international marketing. Use range of examples to enhance your discussion and academic sources to discuss marketing terminology.

2.  Select and discuss the target market (or primary target market if there are more than one target customer) for your chosen global brand. Identify whether the brand is targeted to a global market or whether the target consumer differs from country to country. Deliverable 6 – Electronic Medical Record Brochure

Competency
Examine legal requirements for managing patient information, health information documentation, the release of information, and electronic health records.

Instructions
You have recently been promoted to Health Services Manager at Three Mountains Regional Hospital, a small hospital located in a mid-size city in the Midwest. Three Mountains is a general medical and surgical facility with 400 beds. Last year there were approximately 62,000 emergency visits and 15,000 admissions. More than 6,000 outpatient and 10,000 inpatient surgeries were performed. Three Mountains was recently in the news after employee emails were published where patients were discussed in very negative terms.

Due to the breach of information, many patients are skeptical about selecting Three Mountains as their hospital of choice. Even though specific names of patients were not disclosed as part of the inappropriate dissemination of information, parts of their medical records were mentioned. The patient information was not shared in a favorable light. Patients want to feel secure when they share information with their healthcare providers and be certain that it will remain private.

You will create an informational brochure educating patients about the contents of the medical record and the proper release of information. In a double-sided brochure you need to address the following topics:

  1. The Electronic Medical Record: Definition and contents of the EMR. You will want to include some of the Joint Commission’s requirements pertaining to what should be included in the medical record and when entries should be completed.
  2. HIPAA/Confidentiality: Provide an overview of HIPAA and the level of confidentiality that the patient can expect from Three Mountains Regional Hospital.
  3. Release of Information: Explain the process for a patient to obtain either copies or sections of their medical records. Discuss that information cannot be shared without their express permission.
  4. Privacy Pledge: Craft a privacy pledge statement informing the patient that they can trust that their information will remain private.
  5. The brochure that you will create should be a tri-fold design with two pages (the first for the outside and the second for the inside). Draw attention to your brochure by using well-placed art, an easy to read design, and use of color.

NOTE – APA formatting, and proper grammar, punctuation, and form required. APA help is available here.
