Assignment 3: Profile

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Write a newsworthy professional profile on a journalist or another person of your choosing.
  • As with every assignment, the topic you focus on here should be newsworthy and include the following:
    • 500-800 words
    • A clear angle
    • An engaging lead
    • Distinct structure (Ideas flow logically from one to the next)
    • AP style
    • Your main source, your subject, can be a journalist or any other professional of your choosing. Try to find at least one secondary source, even if it’s another article
  • The assignment will be graded based on the criteria above as well as your overall voice, tone and writing style.

You profile should be about any professional of your choice. It could be with professor, doctor, nurse, engineer, carpenter, journalist — anything really. If you’d like to interview a journalist, I’d be happy to help you find someone to talk to.

As always, there should be some kind of news hook — anything to make it feel current — and then the article should be about this person and what they do for a living. So, for example, if I were to interview someone in the oil industry, I might peg it to this news about Shell and how they say their oil production is going to fall every year: https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/11/business/shell-oil-production-peak/index.html. Then I’d focus the article around how their career may be changing in light of this. If I interviewed a journalist, I might talk to them about attacks on the media and “fake news” and how it affects their work.

As for examples, the piece we read last week on Jorge Ramos is a perfect example of a profile that focuses on someone’s professional life (though of course it’s much longer than what you’ll submit). A couple others:

Brain writing assignment

The first step in composing this paper is to conceptualize your brain. My brain has a long corridor with many doors on the left and on the right. Each door holds a memory. However you might want to conceptualize your brain differently. My suggestion is that you read some of the sample papers that students have written, so you can see how they have conceptualized their brains. Your entire writing will occur within the way you conceptualize your brain. Some students conceptualize their brain as an ocean, or a valley, or possibly an underground cave, all holding the memories of their lives.

This writing assignment will demand four bodies of information:  The way you conceptulaize your brain, the slam poem of your choice, The memory behind the door (such as in my brain) and the research.

Logic:  Read a whole bunch of these slam poems in Module 3, observe if any of the doors open in the corridor of your mind. Execute research on one of the issues that is found behind your door.

MLA

Your paper must have 3 quotes from the slam poem. The paper should also include three quotes from an article (research). Your paper must follow all MLA rules, and a works cited page must be included based on your one source.

Discussion 8- Exe Proj

Assigned Readings:Chapter 8. Cost Estimation and Budgeting Initial Postings: Read and reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Then post what you thought was the most important concept(s), method(s), term(s), and/or any other thing that you felt was worthy of your understanding in each assigned textbook chapter.Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook should be a source listed in your reference section and cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion. Also, provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:

  1. Imagine you are developing a software package for your company’s intranet. Give examples of the various types of costs (labor, materials, equipment and facilities, subcontractors, etc.) and how they would apply to your project.
  2. Think of an example of parametric estimating in your personal experience, such as the use of a cost multiplier based on a similar, past cost.  Did parametric estimating work or not?  Discuss the reasons why.

[Your post must be substantive and demonstrate insight gained from the course material. Postings must be in the student’s own words – do not provide quotes!]  [Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review]

What would spirituality be according to your own worldview?

Every person has his or her very own specific worldview. “A worldview is not a physical lens but, rather, a philosophical and intellectual lens though which a person sees and interprets everything one encounters.” (Hogan, 2020) Spirituality is in my personal opinion or my worldview is an important aspect of life for all people of the earth. To be spiritual, I feel does not mean that you are necessarily of a specific religion but believe or link to a higher power than oneself. Some people are part of a religious group and others may not belong to a religious group. Spirituality for me personally has changed throughout my life. I was a regular churchgoer for much of my life as a child and as a young adult. My husband and I became members of a church in our area but when we moved from the area we did not find a new church as of yet. I find comfort and stability in myself when we regularly attend church services. For myself, I do find that being a part of a religion is my spiritual worldview. However, I feel that it is a wonderful thing that in our country there is freedom to choose.

How do you believe that your conception of spirituality would influence the way in which you care for patients?

I believe that my conception of spirituality, of being open and understanding of many ideals of spirituality makes it easier to care for patients of different types of spiritual backgrounds. “Like your sense of purpose, your personal definition of spirituality may change throughout your life, adapting to your own experiences and relationships.” (Louise Delagran, 2016) This is true in my work experiences. I have taken care of patients with different religious beliefs whom had specific healthcare interventions that they vow to not undergo as part of the religious group they are a part. I have witnessed providers doing great work to care for these patients and offering alternatives to care in respecting the wishes of that patient and family. Where I live is not a largely diverse region but I do take interest and enjoy learning about different spiritual groups. Recently, I learned more about the Jehovah Witness religion because my department has a staff person whom is part of that religious group. It was very interesting to hear about the group and to better understand the reasoning behind some of the medical intervention denials. As nurses, I think it is important to keep an open mind when caring for patients with different spiritual beliefs and the best way to do that is to learn and listen to the patients.

As a nurse and according to my worldviews of spirituality, it is commonly thought of as a search for what is sacred in life, a person’s deepest values in relationship with God, or a higher power that transcends the self. Also, persons may hold powerful spiritual beliefs without having or being active in any institutional religion (McCormick, 2014). Therefore, spirituality can be defined as “a belief system which focuses on intangible elements that impart vitality and meaning to life’s events”. Many in the baby-boom generation who claim not to be religious, admit to a sense of “reverence” for life, like the concept championed by theologian-philosopher Albert Schweitzer (McCormick, 2014).

My conception of spirituality as a nurse would influence the way in which I provide care to patients in that nurses have intuitive and anecdotal impressions that the beliefs and religious practices of patients have a profound effect upon their existential experiences with illness and the threat of dying (McCormick, 2014). This is because when patients face a terminal illness, religious and spiritual factors often figure into their coping strategies and influence important decisions such as the employment of advance directives, the living will and the Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care. In addition, considerations of the meaning, purpose and value of human life are used to make choices about the desirability of CPR and aggressive life-support, or whether and when to forego life support and accept death as appropriate and natural under the circumstances (McCormick, 2014). Many are comforted in the face of a health-crisis with an inner calm that is founded on their deep trust in God’s loving care for them in all situations.

Moreover, religious and spiritual beliefs and practices are important in the lives of many patients, yet nurses, medical students, residents and physicians are often uncertain about whether, when, or how, to address spiritual or religious issues. Physicians in previous times were trained to diagnose and treat disease and had little or no training in how to relate to the spiritual side of the patient. In addition, professional ethics requires physicians to not impinge their beliefs on patients who are particularly vulnerable when seeking health care (McCormick, 2014; Kumar, K., 2004). As a result, no nurse or physician could be expected to understand the beliefs and practices of so many differing faith communities.

8 pages due by 48 hour

This paper will be an application of the leadership practice concepts learned throughout your degree program to a real-world situation. In an eight- to ten-page paper, discuss one significant organizational challenge within your organization or an organization you have researched. How did the leadership of the organization address the challenge? Could it have been done more effectively? How would you recommend future leaders strategically plan to avoid encountering a similar challenge within their own organizations? Provide suggestions for overcoming the challenge based on your own research and concepts presented in your degree program and grounded in leadership theory. Some challenges to consider would be (but are not limited to): an ethical challenge, a challenge occurring because of changes in the economy, a globalization challenge, or a challenge of organizational culture.

The Final Paper should, at minimum, include:

  • A description of the organization and its primary stakeholders. Include the vision and mission statement if they are available to the public, and the code of ethics if the company has one (if it is long, an excerpt or description is an acceptable alternative).
  • A detailed analysis of one challenge facing the leadership of the organization.
  • A strategy for overcoming the challenge based on outside research, the textbook, and concepts discussed during your degree studies.

The Civil War

The Civil War was fought in 10,000 places, from Valverde, New Mexico, and TUI-lahoma, Tennessee, to St. Albans, Vermöht;and Fernandina on the Florida coast More than 3 million Americans fought in it, and over 600,000 men, 2 percent of the population, died in it.

American homes became headquarters, American churches and schoolhouses sheltered the dying, and huge foraging armies swept across American farms and burned American towns. Americans slaughtered one another wholesale, right here in America in their own cornfields and peach orchards, along familiar roads and by waters with old American names.

In two days at Shiloh, on the banks of the Tennessee kiver, more American men fell than in all the previous American war? combined. At Cold Harbor, some 7,000

Americans fell in twenty minutes. Men who had never strayed twenty miles from their own front doors now found themselves soldier in great armies, fighting epic battles hundreds of miles from home, They knew they were making history, and it

was the greatest adventure of their lives.

The Civil War has been given many na es: the War Between the States, the War Against Northern Aggression, the Sefond American Revolution, the Lost Cause,

the War of the Rebellion, the Brothers’ War, the Late Unpleasantness. Walt Whit-man called it the War of Attempted Secession. Confederate General Joseph Johnston called it the War Against the States. By whatever name, it was unques-tionably the most important event in the life of the nation. It saw the end of slavery and the downfall of a southern planter aristocracy. It was the watershed of a new political and economic order, Ond the beginning of big industry, big business, big government. It was the first modern War and, fo Americans, the costliest, yielding the most American fatalities and the greatest domestic suffering, spiritually and physically. It was the most horrible necessary, intimate, acrimonious, mean-

spirited, and heroic conflict the nation has ever know

M’en must pay for the evil they do

Men Must Pay for Evil They Do

By not punishing the most grave offences harshly, we send the message that we do not consider them grave.

Answer 2 of the following questions.

1. List the main points Barrett presents in favour of reinstituting capital punishment. What counter-arguments can you give? Which side appears to have the stronger case? Why?

2. Judging from the first three paragraphs, what do you think prompted Tom Barrett to write this article?

3. According to Barrett, what do most Canadians believe about capital punishment? Do you think Barrett is right?

4. Interview three people to determine their views on capital punishment. Summarize what each says.

Men Must Pay for Evil They Do

TOM BARRETT

By not punishing the most grave offences harshly, we send the message that we do not consider them grave.

THE DESPERATE campaign to prevent the restoration of capital punishment is producing some of the most inflammatory and emotional rhetoric heard in many years.

On the editorial pages of The Journal, MPs who support the death penalty have been condemned as unprincipled opportunists, ready to string up prisoners in order to pander to public bloodlust, and the views of the vast majority of ordinary citizens who stubbornly maintain that our very worst criminals should be executed, have been repeatedly branded as ignorant, uncivilized or worse.

Attacks of this nature do no credit to the abolitionist cause or to the people who make them, but we really shouldn’t be surprised to read them. The mud being slung is a little thicker, the pomposity a tad more overbearing perhaps, but the attempt to shame and intimidate those who believe justice demands the return of the death penalty is an all-too familiar feature of this “debate,” and one that demands a response.

Like most Canadians, I prefer to live in a community that is angry at the Clifford Olsons and Bill Tames, rather than one anxious to extend unwarranted sympathy to men who have committed the most heinous crimes. There is nothing sick or shameful in such anger, or in the belief that death is the only fit penalty for the crimes such men have committed. The fact that most citizens still insist on the ultimate penalty for ultimate crimes is a sign of the continuing moral health of our community, not of a wanton desire for blood.

Their anger is not a selfish, narrow passion, but a reflection of the fundamental human belief that men must pay for the evil they do; that those who commit violent acts against any member of our community do violence to us all, and, in the case of men like Olson or Charles Manson, any penalty less than death is inadequate. The continued existence of men such as Manson, who now amuses himself by selling his obnoxious ravings to newspapers, is an insult to all law-abiding citizens. As former University of Toronto professor Walter Berns has written, execution is a terrible penalty, but there are terrible crimes. By not punishing the most grave offences harshly, we send the message that we do not consider them grave.

Obviously the anger we feel towards violent criminals must be properly tamed in a court of law, which, far from the heat of passion, ultimately expresses it as the denunciation of society. Yet we must never forget the fundamental connection between anger and justice. A community which deals with criminal activity on a mere calculation of mutual self-interest, wholly bare of moral indignation, is an impoverished community indeed, and not the kind most of us would choose to live in.

Yet that is the supposedly compassionate society some critics of capital punishment advocate-one in which moral indignation is discarded as irrational and compassion is blindly extended to all, regardless of the offences committed or aggravating circumstances.

But it is those who cloak their own moral uncertainty in pious sentiments about unlimited compassion and the sacredness of all life whose judgments deserve examination. When the lives of unspeakably vile men such as Manson or Adolf Hitler are said to be as sacred as that of heroic men like Gandhi or Martin Luther King, you can be sure the word has lost all meaning. This is not evidence of a generous vision, but of a bankruptcy of vision. The claim that no crime, however heinous, warrants execution, that absolutely nothing is worth dying for, exalts mere existence over every other moral value. This is not the compassionate, progressive stand it masquerades as, but a poverty of values.

Fortunately, the vast majority of Canadian citizens do not share this lack of conviction. They continue to believe that we are right and criminals are wrong, that both compassion and punishment, sometimes very harsh punishment, have a place in our criminal justice system, and they are determined to see that our worst criminals are paid back for their actions and receive the penalty that justice demands.

Infer Stats in Decision-Making DSRT-734

You have been provided the data set in order to answer the research question below. The data set (CSV-Student_Achievement_Dataset.CSV) is a Comma-Separated-Values file. Generally, JASP opens these files nicely, but you will always want to check your rows and columns to see that nothing seems out of place. You will do a complete/full analysis with this file and provide your conclusion in APA format. Again, you should not include output in your dissertation, but for this assignment, it IS required.

A quiz that earns full credit will include (for each research question):

1. An introductory sentence about which test(s) will be used and what indicated that it was the correct test.

2. A stated null and alternative hypothesis. (Except for correlation)

3. The output from JASP.

4. A conclusion in paragraph form that includes the decision you made, APA formatted reporting of your statistics, and a final statement about your findings as it relates to the research question. (2-3 sentences is fine)

For this quiz, you do not need to use this Word file, but you will need to create your own. While I don’t have an issue with you turning in an Excel file, you should see this as an assessment of your professional writing of statistical analysis for which Excel may not be appropriate.

Research Questions

1. Is there a relationship between a student’s Language Arts Scaled Score (cstlass) and a student’s Math Scaled Score (cstmss)?

2. Do males and females score differently on Language Arts Scaled Scores (cstlass)?  What about Math Scaled Scores (cstmss)?

Final Paper

Overview:  You will be required to write one 4-6 page research paper (double-spaced, 12-font) where you examine the historical significance of an image from the John Carter Brown Library’s Archive of Early American Images or the Archive of Political Cartoons (https://www.brown.edu/academics/libraries/john-carter-brown/jcb-online/image-collections/archive-early-american-images (链接到外部网站。)链接到外部网站。 ). You will choose one or two images from the JCB archives to explore the historical story of the image. For a research paper, you will need to generate the main question you will pursue and develop a clear argument for the reader. You will then need to support your central claim with evidence drawn from primary sources of the time being studied and scholarly secondary sources relating to the topic being examined.  Purpose:  The purpose of this assignment is to challenge students to produce a written product where they explore the history of a particular historical image and unpack the context necessary to understand the temporal space and significance of the image.  Skills that will be practiced:  To fulfill this assignment, students will need to acquire and implement the following skills:  Problem solving—Students will need to use historical thinking and critical thinking skills to be able unravel the significance and historical context of the image the chose. Information literacy—As part of their research, students will learn the difference between primary and secondary sources, popular and scholarly sources, credible and untrustworthy sources. Moreover, they will need to use information resources like the internet, library services, etc. Image analysis skills—Students will learn and practice how to read an image and how to uncover its levels of meanings. Complex writing—Students will practice brainstorming, organizing, outlining, editing, and finalizing a complex, research-based written product. In-depth understanding of a historical moment in U.S. history—To untangle the historical context of the image they select, students will need to acquire multiple perspectives and understandings of the historical moment pertaining to their image. Assignment Expectations:  Your paper must:  Be written clearly and with minimal grammatical, spelling, and typo errors. Use at least three primary sources and three secondary sources. Use proper Chicago Manual of Style format to cite quotes and paraphrasing. The assignment will be turned in via Canvas on December 2, 2018. There are two additional requirements that you must complete for this paper worth 20 points each. The requirements are:  a List of Quality Research Questions (Due 10/28/18) For this assignment, you will use the process presented in class in “Generating Good Research Questions” to develop a list of between 5 and 10 strong, quality research questions you could explore for your image. an Outline and Sources List (11/18/18) For this assignment, you will create an outline of the key points you expect to explore and present in your paper. Your outline must include a working thesis. You will also create a sources list formatted in Chicago Manual of Style format of the sources you plan to use for your paper.

Jared is a 62-year-old male who has asthma but is otherwise in good health. He works in the plate-processing section of a battery manufacturing plant. One of the risks in working in the plate-processing department is exposure to airborne lead. Jared has become comfortable after working in the same position at the plant for the last 25 years. At times, he may rush or skip steps or not pay attention to best safety practices of the company. For the past several months, Jared has put in many hours of overtime as he prepares for retirement. At the end of his shift, Jared skips changing and leaving his clothes at the plant to be washed before going home, saying that he will wash them at home himself. In addition to Jared’s relaxed behavior toward safety practices, he works in an older building, and the equipment does not always function the way that it should. Quite a while back, the vacuum for Jared’s station stopped working, and Jared has been forgetting to report the broken vacuum. He has not placed an equipment replacement request to have a new vacuum delivered to his station. Jared has been cleaning his area by sweeping with a broom that he borrowed from a maintenance closet on the office floor since he does not have a functional vacuum.Lately, Jared has been experiencing extreme fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and muscle pain that he blames on the long work hours. The addition of stomach cramps to his existing symptoms, however, has led him to go to the doctor. Upon evaluation, the doctor has determined that Jared has extremely high levels (40 ug/DL) of lead in his system. A blood concentration of <5ug/dL of lead is considered elevated. At a concentration of 40 ug/dl of lead in the blood, Jared is experiencing the onset of lead toxicity.Reflect on the above case study and reference the required unit resources for this unit to respond to the case study analysis below.

  • Discuss how Jared’s profile (age, health status, etc.) can affect his susceptibility to lead toxicity.
  • Consider the ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) of lead in this case study.
    • Discuss the most likely route of absorption of lead in this case study.
    • Lead is not metabolized by the liver. Explain Phase 1 and 2 reactions. Would the lead in Jared’s body undergo biotransformation and Phase 1 and 2 reactions? Explain.
    • Due to the route of absorption, how will lead be distributed throughout Jared’s body?
    • If the half-life of lead is 28 days, how long will it take for 40ug/dL of lead be reduced to less than 5ug/dL? Explain how you determined that time frame.
  • If you were the safety supervisor at the battery manufacturing plant where Jared works, what would be some points that you address with him to avoid further exposure to lead at work?

Your analysis of the case study should be at least one page in length and should utilize at least two reliable references, which should be cited and referenced using APA style.
