Systems thinking is being able to look at a systems different parts and how they interrelate to each other, how those systems will work overtime, and how those systems will work inside other larger systems (Meadows, 2008).

Systems thinking can be applied to affect positive outcomes when seeing and connecting feedback loops. Specifically speaking to the reinforcing feedback loop that changes in direction to whichever way you push it (Meadows, 2008). If we reinforce our goals, the more we will get out of those goals, and the more we will want to put into those goals. This in turn for ourselves will create positive outcomes. If a goal that we have is to get into fitness, so we try yoga, we find that yoga relaxes us, we then continue to do more yoga, and become more relaxed. This reinforces the positive outcome of getting into fitness and staying consistent with it. This however can go the other way in that we try yoga, find that it does nothing for us, we do less yoga, and eventually quit all together producing a negative outcome. We will hopefully try a different activity in fitness to produce a new positive outcome.

In today’s society, information is often overwhelmingly plentiful. How would they go about finding exactly the information they would need?

Module 3 DB Overview: In today’s society, information is often overwhelmingly plentiful. How would they go about finding exactly the information they would need? Can you imagine the possible challenges here?

One of the competencies Health Educators perform is to evaluate resources for the people they serve, and to translate the information from these resources into useable, relevant information that meets the needs of any individual or community. https://blog.keenessays.com/2021/07/05/describe-the-significance-of-the-beam-pattern-of-light-source-on-the-video-surveillance-performance/ In DB3, we are going to practice how to translate complex information into understandable and usable information for a specific audience (elders), discuss the challenges of doing so, and share ideas with one another for how to meet these challenges.

Module 3 DB Instructions:

1. To complete this discussion board (DB) you will first need to have read the three resources provided in the Guidelines for Health Resources – Readings for Module 3 DB. The Nutrition.gov website is a list of resources for seniors.

2. For your Initial Post. You may pretend you are working with your interviewee from FE1 or pretend you are working with one of these people (pick only one – a, b, or c): a) A senior living alone; b) A senior living with a health issue, such as, diabetes or heart disease; or c) A person who is caring for their family member who has dementia. For your first post include all of the following:

  • Identify two  relevant resources from the Nutrition.gov website’s list of resources for your chosen elder. Talk specifically about how or why these two resources are  relevant for your chosen older adult.
  • Describe what specific points of information from the two resources from Nutrition.gov list you would highlight for the person you chose and why.
  • Next, describe what in particular is complex about the information and how you would you help make this information easy to understand/relevant to the person/persons you are working with.
  • Finally, talk a little bit about how you applied the information from the readings in making your choice of websites and simplifying the information to share with your chosen senior.

3. For your conversations with your classmates:

  • Read through one another’s posts.
  • Pick one classmate to engage in conversation.
  • Post back and forth with one another and explore what each of you did that was the same and different. Talk with one another about how you came to make the decisions you did.
  • Next, describe what in https://blog.keenessays.com/2021/07/05/describe-the-significance-of-the-beam-pattern-of-light-source-on-the-video-surveillance-performance/ particular is complex about the information and how you would you help make this information easy to  understand/relevant to the person/persons you are working with.
  • Next, describe what in particular is complex about the information and how you would you help make this information easy to understand/relevant to the person/persons you are working with.
  • Finally, talk a little bit about how you applied the information from the supplementary readings to making your choice of websites and simplifying the information to share with your person.

DISCUSSION 6

Write up a list of all the statuses you currently occupy and then address the following questions:

How many of the statuses on your list are ascribed?

How many of them are achieved?

What statuses on your list, if any, would not have made your list a year ago? Five years ago?

Which of the statuses on your list is most prestigious? Least prestigious?

Can you identify and describe any status inconsistencies on your list?

Finally, of all the statuses on your list, which one would you identify as your master status? Why?

respons no.1

Of all the statues I currently occupy, I would suggest that the vast majority of them are achieved. Now when I say that it sounds slightly conceited, like I am attributing my current position solely to the level of effort I have exhibited over the years. While I cannot directly argue against that, I would offer that once we reach a certain point in our lives, our identity and status for that matter are almost entirely dependent on our level of engagement and effort.

As I understand it, a person’s status or statuses refer to that individuals position relative to others within society. Due to this, we all have social statuses which are either ascribed (issued) to us or achieved though varying levels of effort as we grow and evolve. While most of the ascribed statuses which I was given at birth are still accurate, such as my race and sex, as an example, the social class which I was born into has shifted over the years because of both my actions and the actions of my parents. So, I would waiver between attributing the social class or socioeconomic class for that matter to either my early childhood development, which I largely just existed in, or my current state which has resulted largely from sweat equity and varying levels of effort throughout my more recent past. This to me is an exceptionally grey area where I could go either way.

I would offer, however, that if I had made a list five years ago, many of my statuses would still show up today. While I believe industriousness and enthusiasm shape our status more than other factors, I have largely just grown within the areas I was introduced to and evolved in, and I have built upon those statuses as a result.

Although I am still a little unsure of the prestige concept as it relates to status, I would offer that my status as a Marine would be considered prestigious within many societies. As for my “master status,” I would consider the title and position of college student as my most definable status within society today. Being a student in our country comes with its own set of parameters and defining characteristics which influence societies opinions and interactions with this specific group. Since master status also refers to the identity or role which is most responsible for shaping one’s outward appearance and social identity, I would suggest being a veteran influences my position in society just as much as being a student has.

respons no.2

I currently occupy a multitude if statuses and yet at the same time I don’t know any as I am still developing into the person I am going to be. I am a student, daughter, sister, volleyball player, retail associate, friend, most valuable player, babysitter, tutor, cousin, niece, piano player, knife throwert, etc. All of the statuses that are given by relations are atributed as I obviously didn’t decide to become a sister or a daughter. I was also ascribed student as I am currently in highschool and havent had the choice of being a student and have only been forced to go my entire life so far. I have a decent amount of statuses that I have achieved but I am unsure of the exact number. My most valuable player award was definitely an achievement that I am proud of.  Being a piano player was originally ascribed to me as I started at age 5 but I made the decision to continue on my own without lessons teaching myself a vast number of songs and so I have now reclaimed my title as a piano player and gave it to myself instead of it being given to me. The status of being a tutor and babysitter would not have been on my list a year ago as I had never done either until I got a job as a tutor and would occasionally babysit as well. I would also not have put retail associate on my list even a month ago as I have just gotten a new job working at a volleyball athletics store. All three of these statuses are new to my list and I am proud that they are there. Babysitting and tutoring was my first unofficial job and now working at a new volleyball store is my first official job. A status that would not be on my list five years ago would be most valuable player. I received that about two and a half years ago and I am incredibly proud of it knowing that I worked hard to earn that title. I also added about two years ago the title of knife thrower. I wanted to learn how to throw knives and so my mom and dad were able to buy me some practice knives where I practiced constantly and learned how to throw them. As of today, I can hit almost any target and it is an incredibly exciting and fun hobby to do. My most valuable player achievement is probably my most prestigious status as it was an award for hard work whereas I would say daughter, sister, niece, cousin, etc, is least prestigious as I didn’t do anything to earn the title. On my list I don’t think I have any that are super inconsistent except maybe an indoor volleyball player in specific. I haven’t been able to play indoors this whole year and this was my last season so technically I am no longer an indoor volleyball player since I don’t play nor have a team. I would identify my master status to being an extremely reliable and overall good friend. I work hard to maintain and enjoy all of my friendships making sure both me and my friend feel supported. I pride myself most on my kindness towards others and welcoming nature.

Sports-Nutrition case study

For this case study, you ideally will need to recruit a healthy adult competitive athlete. This person can be a recreational sports athlete, college athlete, or other type of active athlete. Alternatively, you can even use yourself. Note that this is just an academic exercise, so the person you are working with does not need to follow the program.

Go through Steps 1 to 8 from Unit 17, provided below, and develop nutritional guidepnes for your subject, dependent on the season that he/she is in. Then provide a discussion as to why you made your recommendations.

Show all calculations that may apply, using the methods in the course textbook related to the Steps. Make note of the person’s age, gender, sport, and athletic season.

Step 1: Determine body composition.

Step 2: Determine daily caloric expenditure range for training days and non-training days and for competition days.

Step 3: Determine the bioenergetics the sport primarily demands for peak athletic performance; Athlete- Type; Anaerobic – Immediate Energy System; Anaerobic Glycolytic; Anaerobic Glycolytic – Oxidative Glycolytic; and Oxidative. Some examples of sports are included below.

Step 4: Determine daily protein intake estimate and the foods and supplements to achieve it. Remember from your lessons that protein requirements can differ among different Athlete-Types and among individual athletes. This gives a scientific reason for making protein intake a priority for sports nutrition programs, in addition to other factors.

Step 5: Determine daily carbohydrate estimate and the foods and supplements to achieve it. Remember to plan for carbohydrate beverage intake before, during, and after practice and for sport events as appropriate. Modulate carbohydrate type and amount with meals and snacks to meet specific nutrition goals.

Step 6: Determine fat (essential fatty acids) intake estimate and plan, and select foods and cooking methods to achieve it. Keeping fat intake under 30 percent of total daily calories will be an ongoing skill to master. For certain sports, maintaining low fat intake during the season—between 15 and 20 percent of total daily calories—can be challenging and requires extra effort to make sure athletes are ingesting adequate amounts of the essential fatty acids: Linoleic and Alpha-linolenic acids. Add healthy sources of essential fatty acids in addition to EPA and DHA as required for health.

Step 7: Maintain proper fluid intake estimate to meet daily requirements, as determined by amount of physical activity, environmental factors, and specific athletic training, performance, and health needs.

Step 8: Determine the needs for using special sports nutrition and dietary supplement products.

discussion question in-cite text

If you are like me, your day (still) begins and ends with seeking to get ‘daily updates’ on COVID-19.

If you step back and examine how places like John Hopkins and Columbia are using daily infection & death rates, they are able to forecast the rate of infection and death (so far done predominantly by county).

But, each forecast also has different underlying assumptions for infection–mostly driven by social distancing practices in place and how long social distancing has been in effect. New underlying assumptions are emerging as vaccine rollouts proceed.

The articles are not always great at stating their underlying assumptions (which is a concern), but for you, the curious learner, is an important thing to realize. It makes you ask better questions of the data presented. The Daily Tracker and the interactive forecasting article are especially interesting when you start to think about both from the statistics standpoint.

There are currently 924,107 staffed hospital beds in the US (American Hospital Association, 2020). Occupancy rate of beds pre-Coronavirus was not found. The current US population is estimated to be approximately 329 million (United States Census Bureau, 2020).

What do you think? What is your experience one year after this first began?
