Corporate Finance

Select a publicly traded U.S. corporation for which you have a common interest.

A. Prepare an overview of the company, incorporating the following points:

     History of the company

     History of the industry

Types of products or services offered

Rank in the particular industry that it operates

     Discussion of the competition

New potential products of the company on the horizon and your assessment of its                    impact on the company and industry

B. Discuss the types of financing that your company uses (short term borrowings, lines of credit, commercial paper, debentures, collateralized bonds, issues of common stock)

C. As per our discussion of financial ratios in chapter 3 of our textbook, prepare an analysis of as many of the 13 key ratios as you can obtain information for. Financial statements for publicly traded companies include 3 years of balance sheets and statements of shareholder equity and two years of income statements. The Internet will furnish the third year’s income statement. Prepare the financial ratios for the 3 year period using the balance sheets, income statements and statements of shareholders’ equity.

D. For two of the company’s closest competitors, prepare an analysis of as many of the 13 key ratios as you can for the latest year information is available. Then chart the results of the key ratios of the 3 companies for the latest common year that you can obtain information on, and provide a discussion of your interpretation of the results and which company seems to be in the best and worst financial shape.

E. Finally, for the three companies in (D) above, prepare an analysis of the P/E (price to earnings) ratio for a three period and contrast those numbers with the financial results of each of the companies.. Determine if there is any correlation of the P/E ratios with the financial performance and strength (or weakness) of each of the companies.

Background/Required Reading:

Continuous monitoring is a critical part of the risk management process. “Continuous monitoring is ongoing observance with intent to provide warning. A continuous monitoring capability is the ongoing observance and analysis of the operational states of systems to provide decision support regarding situational awareness and deviations from expectations.” —Source: Keith Willett (MITRE) in support of the National Security Agency.

“Information Security Continuous Monitoring (ISCM) is defined as maintaining ongoing awareness of information security, vulnerabilities, and threats to support organizational risk management decisions.” —NIST.

Organizations should establish, implement, and maintain ISCM. ISCM should be a recursive process as its monitoring strategy is continually refined so that ISCM is a robust system. Tiered organization-wide ISCM framework and dynamic ISCM processes are proposed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Please scan through the important framework and processes in the following article. Its Appendix D “Technologies for Enabling ISCM” provides some technical and managerial details and examples.

Post a response that addresses the following:

According to the social and behavioral theories addressed in this week’s Learning Resources, behavior is learned through experience, observation, and the administration of punishment and rewards. For example, a child may avoid a hot stove after being burned, an adolescent may mimic his or her favorite recording artist, and an adult may drive slowly through a school zone after receiving a speeding ticket the week before. The majority of learned behavior is considered to be acceptable and falls within the confines of social norms. However, poor behavior can also be learned and reinforced through the same mechanisms as good behavior.

For this Discussion, you consider the degree to which criminal behavior is learned and whether the current criminal justice system is equipped to help offenders “unlearn.”

To prepare:

  • Identify a recent crime that received news coverage and for which there is information about the offender’s background and motives.

By Day 3

Post a response that addresses the following:

  • Summarize the crime you have identified.
  • Why did the offender commit the crime? To what extent do you think the crime was the result of learned behavior?
  • Is the current criminal justice system equipped to help offenders “unlearn” criminal behavior, such as that involved in this crime?

Post a response that addresses the following:

  • Explain how—and to what extent—the following factors account for criminal behavior in the case study:
    • Parenting styles and practices
    • Peer influences
    • Conditioning and reinforcement

Support your response with specific examples from the case study, theories from the Learning Resources, and relevant professional experience.

Assignment Details:

A woman in her mid-thirties suffered from a rare malignancy in her brain and around her spinal cord. She had surgery, and most of the tumor mass was removed, but the residual tumor remained in the brain and around the spinal cord. The doctors informed her that chemotherapy and radiation were possible treatment options but could cause serious problems such as sepsis, a permanent loss of IQ and stature, and even death. She wished to proceed with the therapy.

After undergoing aggressive chemotherapy and radiation, she did independent research and read of several drugs being administered for cancer in other states that were unapproved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and were illegal in their home state but were touted by physicians using them as “miracle cures.” The woman is considering suing her physician for failure to disclose alternative treatments, thus depriving her of informed consent.

A court awarded summary judgment to the physician.

Respond to the following questions about this case:

  • In your opinion, does the court’s decision seem warranted? Why or why not?
  • Under the doctrine of informed consent, should a physician be responsible for informing patients of all treatment options, even if some of the treatments are illegal or not yet proven effective? Explain your answer.

Discussion 3: Selection

If you watch the news, or read the news on the Internet or in your local newspaper you will often see instances of employment discrimination in hiring practices. Many large companies such as Hooters, Abercrombie & Fitch, and FedEx have been accused of discriminatory hiring practices.

For this weeks discussion you will search the Internet for an article about a recent employment discrimination case related to selection and provide a summary of the issue. You can do a general Internet search using various keywords (e.g., employment discrimination cases, hiring discrimination cases). The New York Times and Huffington Post often post interesting articles regarding such cases. You could also visit the EEOC’s website (Links to an external site.) for a list of recent cases to choose from. Try to find a case that involves a large organization that your classmates would be familiar with. Be sure that the case involves discriminatory selection procedures (NOT whistle blowing, sexual harassment, hostile work environment etc.).

In the subject box write the name of the company who was sued. Address the following in your post:

  • Provide a summary of the main issue in your own words (DO NOT cut and paste from the article or news brief). Why was the company being sued? What were they accused of doing? Why is what the company did in their selection process illegal? What protected class(es) were involved (females, racial minority, etc.)?
  • Describe the results of the case. How was the matter resolved? Who won? Did the organization settle for a certain amount of money? Was the organization ordered to do anything differently in future hiring endeavors?
  • Feel free to add you own thoughts or opinions about the case (this is a discussion after all!). Given what you know about this organization were you surprised with the allegations? Was the final decision fair in your opinion?

Staff Training Session

Overview

Develop and record a 10–15-slide audiovisual presentation to introduce staff personnel to the new or upgraded telehealth technology that was the focus of your previous assessments.

Successful deployment of a new health care technology requires that your team be well trained in its use. Nurse leaders have many options to choose from when considering an effective training strategy, among which is the use of Web conferencing technologies, such as webinars, used to deliver training remotely to a geographically dispersed audience.

This assessment provides an opportunity for you to develop a presentation to introduce staff personnel to the new or upgraded telehealth technology that was the focus of your previous assessments.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Evaluate technologies used to gather patient data; inform diagnoses; and enhance care quality, safety, and outcomes.
    • Describe the purpose and use of a new or upgraded telehealth technology.
    • Explain the potential risks and benefits of a new or upgraded telehealth technology.
  • Competency 2: Develop a collaborative technology integration strategy.
    • Identify the requirements for successful deployment of a new or upgraded telehealth technology, including appropriate training for providers, patients, and the patients’ families.
  • Competency 3: Develop a strategy for managing technology use that enhances patient care and organizational effectiveness.
    • Explain how an organization will assess the effectiveness of a new or upgraded telehealth technology.
    • Describe the type of ongoing training and technical support that will be available to a nursing staff.
  • Competency 4: Promote effective technology use policies that protect patient confidentiality and privacy.
    • Address patient confidentiality and privacy safeguards associated with a new or upgraded telehealth technology.
  • Competency 5: Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, in an appropriate form and style, consistent with applicable organizational, professional, and scholarly standards.
    • Support assertions and conclusions with relevant and credible evidence.
    • Develop slides that augment a multimedia presentation.
    • Communicate effectively with staff to support the implementation and use of a new or upgraded telehealth technology.

Required Resources:

Ana Nguyen and Tara Jennings are making great progress with the plan to launch a pilot telehealth program in partnership with the Murray County Central Secondary School in rural Slayton, Minnesota. This program will allow students to interact with mental health counselors at St. Anthony Medical Center via telehealth technology. Now Ana and Tara need to determine an effective training strategy.

Ana NguyenBehavioral Health Nurse Manager – St. Anthony Medical Center

We’ve made so much progress with this project. I’m really excited about the potential here and can’t wait for it to kick off. But… we do need to talk through the training strategy so Tara and I can develop staff training plans. This project is a somewhat unique in that, if you think about it, we will actually have three sets of trainees: the staff here at SAMC, the staff at the schools, and the end users – the students and their parents. For now, though, I want to focus on staff training both here and at the schools.

Troy HollandDirector of Patient Services – St. Anthony Medical Center

I think that’s a good plan, Ana. One of the areas we usually cover in staff training is safety. I this case, I think that dovetails with patient confidentiality and privacy, but it’s probably an area that you and Tara should pay attention to. I don’t want to be melodramatic, but there is so much attention to firearms in the schools – you two should determine how you want to discuss procedures for dealing with a very troubled student should the need arise. I read about a similar program in Texas that has actually removed students from the school based on the telehealth session. All I’m suggesting is that you determine how to address this kind of thing in your training.

Christopher HewittVice President of Medical Support Services

Another area to include is the basic back story. You’ve been close to this project for quite a while, but the people being trained have not. Don’t go overboard, but it helps people absorb the training if the understand the context. So, you should be sure to explain the purpose of the pilot, how is the technology going to be used, and so forth.

Frederick MoraDirector of Quality Management – Vila Health Group

I think it is useful to discuss the quality management plans. Explain how you and your partners at the school have defined success. What are the key measures of success and how are we planning to measure those outcomes? As with some of the other points made today, we don’t need to be overly specific with the details, but it helps users understand why they are being asked to do things in a certain way if they’ve been given insight to the big picture.

Blake CarterDirector of Information Technology – Vila Health Group

If you need any help from our people in IT regarding how the Behavioral Health staff can get technical support if they need it, let me know. You might want to consider developing a job aid that can be located with the equipment. If you do, we can help put that together.

Tara JenningsDirector of Nursing Informatics – St. Anthony Medical Center

Thank you all. I have a much better handle on how to tackle the training. One thing that Ana and I will need to clarify is what is needed for successful launch of this program. That’s going to include training questions and will be somewhat iterative I think. We need to have a good sense of how much training is required, how it differs for various staff – the school staff and our own – and who will be responsible for training the parents and students. There’s more to a training strategy than just the nuts and bolts, as you all know. That said, this conversation has helped me clarify things in my own mind.

Conclusion

Activity complete! In this activity, you had the opportunity to observe the planning committee discuss development of a training strategy and the specific needs for a staff training session. This information should help you complete your own staff training session for the topic you have chosen for your assignment.

Assessment Instructions

Preparation

Successful deployment of new or upgraded telehealth technology requires that your team be well trained in its use. One key element of your overall training strategy is to orient your staff to the new technology. Consequently, you have decided to develop an orientation webinar, which can be used to deliver the training remotely using Web conferencing technologies.

To prepare for the assessment, you are encouraged to think about how you might use Web conferencing technologies, such as webinars, to deliver training to nursing staff. You may also want to begin thinking about how you will approach the design of your webinar presentation slides.

In addition, you may wish to:

  • Review the assessment instructions and scoring guide to ensure that you understand the work you will be asked to complete.
  • Review the Guiding Questions: Staff Training Session document, which includes questions to consider and additional guidance on how to successfully complete the assessment.

Consider the following information relative to your consulting engagement for Hoosier Media, Inc.

Marketing

Currently Hoosier Media utilizes traditional media vehicles for marketing. This includes print advertising to solicit new and renewal newspaper subscriptions. Other marketing tactics currently used include regional television and radio advertising spots. Management has expressed interest in expanding its marketing reach through social media and mobile app technology but is unsure how to move forward in those areas.

Information technology

Hoosier Media’s newsroom is in dire need of technological updates. All workstations currently have desktop computers; however, many employees have been requesting the ability to work from home as well as have access to company networks while on the road for business. Many of the younger employees would like to have access to iPads and would like to replace their desktop computer with lightweight laptop computers.

For the next phase of your consulting engagement, address the following in a 700- to 1,050-word paper:

  • Propose marketing and information technology implementation tactics for Hoosier Media, Inc.

The paper should also reflect on how the company should communicate its strategic plan to key stakeholders by:

  • Identifying the information that should be communicated.
  • Defining the audience that should receive the communication.
  • Identifying the channel(s) of communication.
