Purpose of Assignment

Students will have the opportunity to develop a Balanced Scorecard. This, in turn, will allow them to create effective strategic objectives to be included as part of their overall strategic plan. They will also be presented with the task of creating a brief communication plan that will be used by their proposed division to efficiently distribute information with regard to their strategic initiatives.

Assignment Steps

Resources: Strategic Planning Outline and Week 4 textbook readings

Create a minimum 1,050-word strategic objectives summary.

Include your balanced scorecard and its impact on all stakeholders, and the communication plan.

Identify key trends, assumptions, and risks in the context of your final business model.

Develop the strategic objectives for your new division of the existing business in a balanced scorecard format in the context of key trends, assumptions, and risks. The strategic objectives are measures of attaining your vision and mission. As you develop them, consider the vision, mission, and values for your business and the outcomes of your SWOTT analysis.

Consider the following four quadrants of the balanced scorecard when developing your strategic objectives:

  • Shareholder Value or Financial Perspective, which includes strategic objectives in areas such as:
    • Market share
    • Revenues and costs
    • Profitability
    • Competitive position
  • Customer Value Perspective, which includes strategic objectives in areas such as:
    • Customer retention or turnover
    • Customer satisfaction
    • Customer value
  • Process or Internal Operations Perspective, which includes strategic objectives in areas such as:
    • Measure of process performance
    • Productivity or productivity improvement
    • Operations metrics
    • Impact of change on the organization
  • Learning and Growth (Employee) Perspective, which includes strategic objectives in areas such as:
    • Employee satisfaction
    • Employee turnover or retention
    • Level of organizational capability
    • Nature of organizational culture or climate
    • Technological innovation

Evaluate potential alternatives to the issues and/or opportunities identified in the SWOTT Analysis assignment and table you completed in Week 3.

Create at least three strategic objectives for each of the four balanced scorecard areas. Base your solutions on a ranking of alternative solutions including the following:

  • Identify potential risks and mitigation plans.
  • Analyze a stakeholder and include mitigation and contingency strategies.
  • Incorporate ethical implications.

Develop a specific metric and target for each strategic objective using a balanced scorecard format.

Example: a strategic objective in the shareholder or financial perspective is to increase market share. A metric to actually measure this strategic objective of market share increase is, “The percentage of increase in market share.” The target is the specific number to be achieved in a particular time period. The target for the metric of “Increase market share” could be “Increase market share by 2% for each of the next 3 years” of an increase of 2% per year for 3 years.

Outline a brief communication plan discussing how you will communicate the company’s strategic objectives including the following:

  • Define the purpose.
  • Define the audience.
  • Identify the channel(s) of communication and why you selected that channel.

Format your assignment consistent with APA guidelines.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

RIGHT

Point of View

In the Informative Essay, you are going to be writing in the third person point of view. When writing in third person, the writer does not refer to him or herself by using “I,” and does not address the reader directly by using “you.” Instead, the writer gives an observer’s perspective and uses words such as “he/she/they.”

  1. Copy/paste a few sentences from your Personal Essay (Assignment 1), which illustrates the use of first person (“I”) point of view.
  2. Change the point of view from first person to third person.

THE INFORMATIVE ESSAY

It is important to know that you are no longer writing in the first person (i.e., I and me). You must now use he, she, they or it. You may also use the actual name (i.e., specific noun) for each sentence you write.  See the following example:

Third person example:

Parents usually select childcare centers that are clean.

Do you notice how “Parents” is the specific noun used as the subject of the sentence? This is evidence of writing in the third person. Remember, it’s very important that your reader understands exactly who/what is the subject of each sentence.

Writing for Research:

You are no longer writing about your opinion. You must now convert your writing to reflect that you are writing for research. This means that you must include citations that support your position.

Example:

Parents usually select childcare centers that are clean (Davis, 2017).

Notice how the citation (Davis, 2017) supports the sentence? This is how you must write each of your supporting paragraphs of your informative essay.

Peer Feedback:

After you have posted, provide a classmate with feedback.

  1. Did they change the point of view correctly?
  2. Do you have any changes to suggest?
  3. What did they do well? Make sure to celebrate each other’s successes.

How to give feedback: A “good” peer review is specific and combines suggestions for improvement and praise for what works well. A “poor” peer review does not give specifics and does not offer insight to help your classmate reflect on or improve his or her writing.

I look forward to interacting with you in our forthcoming live-class sessions. Be on the lookout for your invites.

Explain how internal selection decisions differ from external selection decisions.

Selection involves choosing suitable candidates for certain roles. Selection process involves interviewing and assessing potential employees based on the job specification. Selection process can be grouped into internal and external selection. Internal selection involves assessment and evaluation of employees within the organization as they transition between jobs through promotions and transfers (Heneman et al., 2019). Assessment methods that are typically used in internal selection includes succession systems, talent management, peer assessments and self-assessment, recommendations, information discussions and managerial sponsorship (Heneman et al., 2019). With internal selection decisions, candidates are selected on the basis of job knowledge tests, experience and seniority, performance appraisals, review boards and promotion panels, interview simulations and assessment centers.

On the other hand, external selection decisions typically involve assessment and evaluation of potential employees from outside the organization. The process helps in recruiting the best candidates by selecting from a large applicants’ pool (Heneman et al., 2019). However, the process is time consuming and costly since multiple processes have to be involved. Selected employees also have to be indicted and trained with increases organizational costs. However, in external selection, the organization has unlimited choice and can get innovative and new ideas by hiring fresh talent (Heneman et al., 2019). When compared to external selection, internal selection tends to be quicker since employees are selected from within the company. Employees are also familiar with organizational rules, regulations and culture and there is therefore no need for induction training—something that saves money and time. Internal selection processes also boost employee morale and motivated employees can be advantageous to the organization due to enhanced performance.

What are the differences between peer ratings, peer nominations, and peer rankings?

Peer ratings involve a process where an employee’s eligibility for promotion is assessed using a rating scale for different peers (Cillessen & Marks, 2017). An employee with the highest rating is considered for the promotion. Peer nominations involve voting for the most qualified employee to be promoted. Peers with the highest number of votes are considered for the promotion (Cillessen & Marks, 2017). Lastly, peer rankings involve assigning ranks to peers. Employees with the highest ranking are considered for the promotion.

Explain the theory behind assessment centers

An assessment center refers to an internal selection method that is employed for selecting suitable candidates for promotions. The theory behind assessment centers is measuring different kinds of job-related skills and competencies of a candidate (Heneman et al., 2019). It involves different assessment exercises that provide for evaluation of different competencies such as problem solving abilities, interpersonal skills, written and oral communication, reasoning and planning abilities of the candidate (Heneman et al., 2019). Assessment centers help in assessing leadership and managerial competencies for high ranking positions.

Touchstone 2.2: Create an Annotated Bibliography

Please read the directions thoroughly. I need seven credible sources. Use the attachments to complete the assignment. Below the essay please insert the reflection questions and answer them accordingly.

ASSIGNMENT: Using your research question, working thesis, and outline from Touchstone 1.2, create an annotated bibliography that provides a synopsis of your sources and an explanation of how you will use them.

In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the Touchstone.

As this assignment builds on Touchstone 1.2: Write a Research Question, Thesis, and Outline, that Touchstone, as well as Touchstone 2.1, must be graded before you can submit your annotated bibliography.

A. Assignment Guidelines

DIRECTIONS: Refer to the list below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.

1. Annotated Bibliography

Make sure to:

❒ Alphabetize the entries, according to APA style.
❒ Include the required bibliographic information in APA format for each entry.❒ Include 3-4 sentences for each entry that provide a short summary of the source and how you plan to use it to support your argument.❒ Include at least seven entries in your annotated bibliography, all of which must be credible, academic sources.❒ Choose your own sources, but use no more than three websites (there is no limit on the number of online journals used).❒ Thoroughly check the formatting requirements for the different source types.❒ Indicate the required sources (book, peer-reviewed journal, newspaper/magazine, and credible website) by including the source type in parentheses after the relevant entry.

2. Reflection

❒ Have you displayed a clear understanding of the research activities?
❒ Have you answered all reflection questions thoughtfully and included insights, observations, and/or examples in all responses?
❒ Are your answers included on a separate page below the main assignment?

B. Reflection Questions

DIRECTIONS: Below your assignment, include answers to all of the following reflection questions.

  1. Accurately recording bibliographic information is essential and saves you time, as you can transfer this information to the References page of your drafted essay. Each source entry should include a brief summary of the source as well as 3-4 sentences describing how you intend to use that source to build or support your argument. Discuss how your annotated bibliography meets these criteria. (2-3 sentences)
  2. Which strategies were most helpful for you when searching for credible sources? (2-3 sentences)
  3. What difficulties did you face while searching for credible sources? How did you overcome these difficulties? (2-3 sentences)

The Alchemist (page 1 to 65)

Answer these questions in a place where you’ll be able to submit them at a later date (Word document, PDF…). Some answers will be short – only a sentence or two – and some might be longer.  Aim to be as specific and detailed as possible, but be concise: the aim is not a paragraph per question 🙂

1. Define “Alchemy”.

2. Describe the setting so far.  Given this setting, what predictions could you make in terms of what might happen?

3. Name two kinds of conflicts (character vs. ______) and describe the way they present themselves.

4. What do the drops of oil on the spoon symbolize  or represent?

5. What is the significance of the story about the Wise Man and the secret of happiness?  Do you think it’s possible to “have it all”?  To do both – see the marvels of the world and not “spill the oil”?

6. The boy refers to the sheep “only wanting food and water” over and over – why do you think that is?  Is there any meaning behind this? Who might the sheep represent?

7. Define “omen”,  Have you ever experienced one? If so, tell me about it.

8. On page 43, the boy quotes “I’m like everyone else – I see the world in terms of what I would like to see happen, not what actually does”.  What are the advantages and disadvantages to living this way?

9. “When you want something, all the world conspires in helping you achieve it” – do you agree or disagree with this statement?  Explain your answer.

10. Describe the setting featured in pages (46-59) and explain how the setting helps move the plot along. You should be aiming to give detail about time and place.

11. Discuss the power of thoughts in this section of the novel (pages 1-65).

Business Entrepreneur Interview

Entrepreneur – Business Owner Informational Interview (conducted remotely by  phone, Facetime, What’s App or other method for personal one-on-one conversation with physical distancing).  Don’t use email or text which does not have the advantage of fluid conversation, body language, or the tone of voice. Develop 3 or more pages, single spaced. Include each question with the person’s answer right below each question.  Value = up to 60 points

Entrepreneur-Business Owner Informational Interview

Introduction

You will read about entrepreneurship in your textbook.  There is also no shortage of books, magazines, articles, podcasts, YouTube videos and other resources about entrepreneurship, how to open a business, and how to operate one.  Just reading about business start-up is only half the information you need to understand entrepreneurship and how business owners think.  There is nothing like life-experience to help you gain a better understanding.

What is an Informational Interview?

An informational interview is a professional conversation between you and someone who works in an industry that you’d like to learn more about.

The purpose of this interview is to learn more about entrepreneurship and how founders think and move forward.

It IS NOT to learn about this individual person, their career or business history, or details about their business.   That would be a waste of their time and yours.

30-Minute Remote Informational Interview

  • The assignment is to complete a 30-minute Informational Interview to learn about more about entrepreneurship and how entrepreneurs think.
  • Develop about 20 open-ended questions in advance of the interview
  • Do not bother collecting collect facts or the personal or career history of the individual  business person you are interviewing.

Assignment Purpose

The purpose of the assignment this module is to learn how entrepreneurs think, make decisions, handle challenges, and move forward.  You are interested in their “pearls of wisdom”, what they have learned through their own processes of trial and error.

This interview is not to simply have a nice chat and to collect facts about the owner or their business, which is a waste of their time and yours. Do not bother asking questions for facts about this individual person or their business.  The interview is not about them…it’s to learn about entrepreneurship.

A good informational interview will expand your knowledge and understanding of entrepreneurship, the risks involved, how people make decisions and why they made them and much more. These are things you could never learn through reading and online research.

I recommend you start early this week to provide time to read about informational interviewing, develop good, in-depth opened ended questions, identify someone terrific to interview, take good notes and transcribe them, and to do great job on this important assignment.  You will need:

  • time to prepare
  • develop about 15-20 great, in-depth, open ended questions
  • select entrepreneur – business owners to interview (having a back-up person, is a great idea, in case someone has to cancel or the interview didn’t go well)
  • schedule the remote interview
  • conduct the interview remotely
  • transcribe your questions and the answers
  • complete your person reflection/summary of what you learned about entrepreneurship during the interview and how it related to what you read in our textbook
  • submit your professional, error free work before the deadline

Requirements – Informational Interview = 3 or more page paper

Identify an entrepreneur – business owner with experience founding and operating their own business to interview remotely during this module.

Write open-ended questions, which encourage the person to share their thoughts and also help keep you on track (at least a dozen or more questions, with flexibility to add even more follow-up questions, when needed, during the interview to “dig-in” and learn even more.

Conduct the interview.  Transcribe your notes.  Create a homework paper that lists each question with the person’s answer below it.

Add your personal reflection/summary at the end which shares what you learned about entrepreneurship and/or business operations during this interview.  (Not what you learned about this person or their business.)

Format Your Paper

  • 3 or more pages
  • typed, single spaced, using a standard size 12 font, 1″ margins
  • list each open-ended question, with the person’s answer right below each question
  • add your personal summary/analysis at the end which shares what you learned about entrepreneurship (not this person)
