Assignment: Drafting a Process Evaluation

The steps for process evaluation outlined by Bliss and Emshoff (2002) may seem very similar to those for conducting other types of evaluation that you have learned about in this course; in fact, it is the purpose and timing of a process evaluation that most distinguish it from other types of evaluation. A process evaluation is conducted during the implementation of the program to evaluate whether the program has been implemented as intended and how the delivery of a program can be improved. A process evaluation can also be useful in supporting an outcome evaluation by helping to determine the reason behind program outcomes.

There are several reasons for conducting process evaluation throughout the implementation of a program. Chief among them is to compare the program that is being delivered to the original program plan, in order to identify gaps and make improvements. Therefore, documentation from the planning stage may prove useful when planning a process evaluation.

For this Assignment, you either build on the work that you completed in Weeks 6, 7, and 8 related to a support group for caregivers, or on your knowledge about a program with which you are familiar. Review the resource “Workbook for Designing a Process Evaluation”.

Submit a 4-page plan for a process evaluation. Include the following minimal information:

· A description of the key program elements

· A description of the strategies that the program uses to produce change

· A description of the needs of the target population

· An explanation of why a process evaluation is important for the program

· A plan for building relationships with the staff and management

· Broad questions to be answered by the process evaluation

· Specific questions to be answered by the process evaluation

· A plan for gathering and analyzing the information

Week 7 (Feb 22 – 28) Decision Making

What do you see as the main difference between a successful and unsuccessful decision? Describe your own personal decision making skills and what you have done to make your decisions more successful.

Response must be a 150 word initial post.

Respond to this comment:

The difference in a successful and unsuccessful decision I believe a successful decision if not only when your decision works out the way you wanted it too, but also if you go by making your decision in the right way, and unsuccessful decision is just that, it did not work, maybe due to not following the plan that you laid out or maybe people just didn’t like the decision you made for a company.

One of my most successful and scariest  decision I have made was to go to school and learn to do hair and skin care, and  then I open my on hair salon and tanning salon, I worked very hard long days and long nights, but it paid off and I had a very successful business for 25 years, For me to have made that decision was very scary to go out and open my on business and could have been a bad decision but it turned into a very good decision.

The Calamities of Consensus

The Calamities of Consensus

When it is time for groups to reach a decision, many turn to consensus. Consensus, a situation of agreement, seems like a good idea. To achieve consensus, groups must cooperate and collaborate, which ultimately will produce higher levels of camaraderie and trust. In addition, if everyone agrees, then the prevailing wisdom is that everyone will be more committed to the decision.

However, there are times when the need for consensus can be detrimental to group functioning. Consider the recent ‘fiscal cliff’ faced by the U.S. government toward the end of 2012. The White House and Congress needed to reach a deal that would reduce the swelling budget deficit. However, many Republicans and Democrats stuck to their party lines, refusing to compromise. Many viewed the end product that achieved consensus as a less than optimal solution. The public gave Congress an approval rating of only 13 percent, expressing frustration with the lack of compromise, but the group may not have been able to function well partly because of the need for consensus.

If consensus is reached, does that mean the decision is the right one? Critics of consensus-based methods argue that any decisions that are ultimately reached are inferior to decisions using other methods such as voting or having team members provide input to their leader, who then makes the final decision. Critics also argue that, because of pressures to conform, groupthink is much more likely, and decisions reached through consensus are simply those that are disliked the least by everyone.

Questions

  1. Is consensus a good way for groups to make decisions? Why or why not?
  2. Can you think of a time where a group of which you were a part relied on consensus? How do you think the decision turned out?
  3. Martin Luther King Jr. once proclaimed, “A genuine leader is not a seeker of consensus but a modeler of consensus”. What do you think he meant by that statement? Do you agree with it? Why or why not?

Using Open-Ended Questioning in Assessment

Open-ended questions cannot be answered in a one- or two-word response. Rather, they are phrased to encourage elaboration and typically begin with words, such as “why,” “how,” or “what,” or phrases, such as “tell me about…” or “help me understand…” For example, an advanced human services professional practitioner, meeting with a service user who is married to an abusive spouse, might ask an open-ended question like, “What is your relationship with your spouse like?,” rather than “When did the physical abuse begin?”

To Prepare

  • Review your Course Announcements for possible information related to this week’s Discussion and Assignment.
  • Review the Learning Resources on open-ended questioning. Pay particular attention to the examples of open-ended questions, how they are structured, and how they are different from closed-ended questions.
  • Go to the Hart City virtual community using the link that is provided in the Learning Resources. Once you are in the community, review the case study you were assigned.
  • Create three open-ended questions you would ask the service user from the case study to elicit information. Consider why you would ask each, as well as what information you are trying to elicit from the service user.

Identify the Hart City case study you were assigned in the subject line of your post.

Post the three most important questions you would ask your service user in the case study to assess their most critical need. Remember to use open-ended questions. Explain why you chose to ask each question and what information you are trying to elicit from the service user. Be specific.
