Discussion: Selecting a Plan

Base this discussion on the Problem on page 261 of your text labeled “Choosing Health Insurance”. Defend your plan selection with material from the text.

From what you have learned so far, which of the following insurance plans listed below do you personally prefer, assuming each one costs the same? Defend your choice (both your selection and rejections) with reasons drawn from these readings:

  • Plan A: Covers the full range of medical care, subject to standard medical necessity or experimental exclusions, without any deductibles or copayments, but you must receive all care at an HMO clinic where doctors are paid a bonus for saving money.
  • Plan B: Excludes mental health and preventative care, and the rest is subject to a $200 deductible and 20 percent copayment up to a maximum of $1,500 per year. Your choice of doctor, but all expensive treatments must be submitted for prior approval by the insurer to determine medical appropriateness.
  • Plan C: Covers the full range of medical care, with no major exclusions and your choice of doctor, and no prior authorization requirement, but subject to a $3,000 deductible.
  • Plan D: Coverage is defined in an approach similar to the Oregon plan, only using 5,000 specific categories of inclusion and exclusion taken from the latest practice guidelines based on medical research, as selected by a national panel of politically appointed experts. No other restrictions or financial limitations.

Discussion CIO should develop reasoned responses that are driven by the company objectives.

1 page answer to

Please respond to the following:

Take a position on whether or not the CIO should develop reasoned responses that are driven by the company objectives. Explain your position.

  • Explain how IT strategy facilitates organizational decisions that are related to the forces that shape the role of IT within an organization (consider domestic and global environments).

plus please provide a paragraph response to the following answer from another student.

I believe they should develop reasoned responses that come from the company objectives.  This is just another way that the IT department can show that “value” all companies are looking for.  By making sure the team is in line with current/future objectives, shows that they are working towards helping to drive that change in a company instead of just trying to maintain the norm.  This is how IT increases their budget and improve their equipment by showing the company that they are onboard for this new objective but this is the way we do it right so we maximize the potential of the company (Express, 2021).

The best way to start with trying to facilitate the decisions of your company is to keep security in mind.  There are several reports that can be referenced to aid in this security stance.  Security has become a huge talking point for several companies, both local and abroad, and it mainly comes from the different types of internet laws that reside around the world (Williams, 2019).  Several of our current attacks are coming from state-sponsored entities which needs to be addressed.  The only way a company can do that is to listen to their IT team on what is needed to prevent such attacks/espionage.  The IT department can even go back to the cause of the Target breach which involved the attackers going after the third-party HVAC company that remotely monitored Target’s A/C systems for their buildings.  The attackers could not breach Target head on, so they used a weaker associate to gain access to the system (Vijayan, 2014).  By presenting this type of information to the company, it can influence the future decisions they make and ensure that security is thought of in the beginning instead of as an afterthought.

Coding consists of labeling and organizing qualitative data to identify different themes and the relationships between them (Medelyan, 2020). After coding 8 classmates introduction post from the Class Café a theme was identified. First, I examined gender. Out of the classmates selected 7 were female and 1 was male. The next common theme I identified was the profession. Out of the 8 classmates 3 of them have had dialysis experience, 1 neuro, 1 metal illness, and 1 nurse educator. I found this intriguing and selected this category as I have dialysis experience. Finally, I selected location. Out of the 8 classmates selected 6 lived in Florida and 3 were unknown. The state also resonated with me as I live in Florida.

Qualitative data analysis reviews and processes the data to understand what it represents. The most common example of qualitative analysis is content analysis (Medelyan, 2020). Coding the data makes it easier to interpret the data (Medelyan, 2020). Researchers use coding and qualitative data analysis to assist them with making decisions based on the feedback (Medelyan, 2020).  Completing the group analysis from the Class Café was not rigorous. There were only a few codes that were used to the consistent theming.

Using the framework approach to code fellow students’ introductions was more daunting than I imagined.  After reading and listening to our selected article I chose to follow the framework an approach that was outlined  (Medelyan).  This assortment of classmates’ introductions lacks transparency concerning the analytical processes employed, which makes this difficult to critically appraise (Maggs-Rapport 2001). Eight posts were available for me to review and I chose a framework that identified them according to areas of specialties, those who had children, years of nursing experience, and the goal they hoped to achieve as a result of obtaining a doctorate.

Of the eight, five had critical care experience. This in itself speaks highly of those individuals who did not view this patient population as intimidating. Six of the 8 have children while enduring the demands of this program. Granted, many of our children are adults but then there are grandchildren and fur babies to attend to. It is admirable that 5 of our classmates are pursuing a nursing degree for the noble cause of improving health care. This unselfishness is sure to benefit all. Although I am to remark on qualitative research, I could not pass up the opportunity to throw in some quantitative data.  Between the eight of them were a sum of 150 years of nursing experience! With a range of nursing experience from 4 to 35 years, the mean was 18.75 and the median was 18. Congratulations!

The commonwealth study ranked the United States las in administrative efficiency and access to healthcare (Schneider et al., 2017).  However, over the last decade, there have been gains made to improve the issue of access. Several health insurance plans have ensured the citizens of the United States gain access to medical services. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) is a medical arrangement where providers provide medical services to the subscribers. Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) is an insurance plan that provides medical insurance at annual fixed rates. Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) is a hybrid health insurance plan that allows subscribers to receive services from providers and institutions from their network.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) has gained popularity over the years due to the flexibility of the insurance plan. PPO is defined as a network of providers and healthcare institutions like hospitals that provide medical services to subscribers. PPO offers freedom to choose healthcare providers, an advantage missing from the other insurance plans (Range, 1984). The growth of PPO can also be attributed to some of the undesirable features with the other plans like HMO, where there is the least amount of freedom in choosing a specialist (Hurley et al., 2004).

When using PPO, referrals are not necessary as the network of physicians will ensure the health issue well taken care of. There is excellent coordination of services among the providers improving the consumer experience of the plan (Range, 1984). However, the amount of paperwork involved while using the system is significant, especially when seeing out-of-network physicians. In everyday situations, the physicians will fill the paperwork for insurance purposes. The paperwork increases when seeing out-of-network physicians. This also points out the issue of administrative efficiency in the study of why the United States healthcare system lags behind other developed nations (Schneider et al., 2017).

Challenges with PPO

A single PPO plan would, on average would $7,880, while a family plan would cost $22,248 in 2020 (KFF, 2020). This is expensive compared to the HMO, where on average, a single plan would cost $7,284 and $20,809 for family cover (KFF, 2020). The increase in premium for PPO would deter most people from using the plan. Over half of the people in the United States are covered by their employers. Companies try to reduce costs, and with the benefits of PPO, companies would still shun the plan due to increased premiums.

The paperwork involved in PPO is enormous in comparison to the other plans. In a study on the rising popularity of PPO, Hurley et al. (2004) cited administration inefficiency as the biggest drawback of PPO. The inefficiency is concerned with the amount of paperwork involved when seeing out-of-network doctors.

Recommendations for PPO

The insurance plan may be rising in popularity due to the various benefits the consumers enjoy, but huge costs deter some people from using the plan. According to Pope et al., an adjustment of the premium would make the insurance even more popular. This will increase the number of people who have access to insurance coverage as more people will subscribe to the plan. Paperwork is one issue when seeking out network providers. Filling the claim paperwork is a tedious process that most consumers would rather forego.  The plan should ensure that all the providers, even out-of-network providers, fill the claim paperwork.
