USE Connotative vs. Denotative Vocabulary

Words are not limited to one single meaning. Most words have multiple meanings, which are categorized as either denotative or connotative. The denotation of a word is its explicit definition as listed in a dictionary. Let’s use the word “home” as an example. The denotative or literal meaning of “home” is “ a place where one lives; a residence.” Hint: Denotation, denotative, definition, and dictionary all start with the letter ‘D.

The expressiveness of language comes from the other type of word meaning—connotation, or the associations that a word usually brings to mind. The connotative meaning of “home” is a place of security, comfort, and family. When Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz says, “There’s no place like home,” she’s not referring to its denotation, but the emotions “home” evokes for her and most people.

Connotation Determines UseThe connotative and denotative meanings of words are both correct, but a word’s connotation determines when it is used. By definition, synonyms have the same denotation or literal meaning, but almost always have different connotations, or shades of meaning. For example, the synonyms of “boat” include ship, yacht, dinghy, and ferry. All these words refer to the same thing, but each elicits a different association in the reader’s mind.

Word choice affects the meaning of what you say and write. A quiz may ask you to select words or write sentences that convey positive, neutral, or negative connotations. For example, notice how the sentence meaning shifts when the underlined word is changed:

Positive: Sally was an enthusiastic member her sorority.

Neutral: Sally was an active member of her sorority.

Negative: Sally was a fanatical member of her sorority.

Discussion: Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

As your EBP skills grow, you may be called upon to share your expertise with others. While EBP practice is often conducted with unique outcomes in mind, EBP practitioners who share their results can both add to the general body of knowledge and serve as an advocate for the application of EBP.

In this Discussion, you will explore strategies for disseminating EBP within your organization, community, or industry.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the various strategies presented throughout the course that may be helpful in disseminating effective and widely cited EBP.
    • This may include: unit-level or organizational-level presentations, poster presentations, and podium presentations at organizational, local, regional, state, and national levels, as well as publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Reflect on which type of dissemination strategy you might use to communicate EBP.

By Day 3 of Week 9

Post at least two dissemination strategies you would be most inclined to use and explain why. Explain which dissemination strategies you would be least inclined to use and explain why. Identify at least two barriers you might encounter when using the dissemination strategies you are most inclined to use. Be specific and provide examples. Explain how you might overcome the barriers you identified.

I NEED A BUSINESS PROPOSAL

The purpose of this assignment is to begin drafting an internal business proposal that outlines how you will implement the solution to the problem you have identified in your organization.

There are several parts to this assignment, and each part has been explained and briefly outlined in the “Business Proposal Project Summary” document in the Topic Materials. The document should be used as a guide to assist you with constructing key elements of the proposal. Word count guidelines are provided for each section of the business proposal. For this assignment, you will complete the Purpose Statement, Problem Statement, Data and Research Findings, Proposed Solution, Stakeholder Analysis and Benefits, and Implementation Methods sections of the Business Proposal. Much of this content has been generated in the Topic 1-4 assignments, as noted below.

  1. Purpose Statement (100-250 words) provides clear statement of why the business proposal is being made.
  2. Problem Statement (revised as needed from Topic 1 assignment feedback) including specific data (statistics and numbers) related to how the problem impacts the business. This part of the proposal should include the graph/chart/data you collected in Part 1 of the Topic 2 assignment.
  3. Data and Research Findings (250-500 words) should include a summary of what you learned from conducting research related to what has already been done to address the organizational problem. This part of the proposal should include the graph/chart/data you collected in Part 2 of the Topic 2 assignment.
  4. Proposed Solution (250-500 words) should include a summary of the top three problem solutions you considered to address the problem. In addition to including the graph/chart/data you collected in Part 3 of the Topic 2 assignment, this section should provide a succinct discussion of the pros and cons of implementing each of the top three solutions being considered to address the problem.
  5. Stakeholder Analysis and Benefits (500 words, revised as needed from Topic 3 assignment feedback)
  6. Implementation Methods (250-500 words) summarize specific strategies that will used to implement the problem solution including time and costs associated with implementation.

It is important to include specific data throughout the business proposal. Include statistics that support the problem statement; can be used to establish and track goals; relate to specifics of implementation, timing, and cost; and illustrate stakeholder benefits. Keep in mind that the proposal is an internal document that will be read by stakeholders within the organization where the problem exists. Focus on this audience as you write. Within the Word document, include subsection titles to organize content according to the categories listed above to provide easy reference points for the reader.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Refer to the LopesWrite Technical Support articles for assistance.

Evolution and Mating Practice

I have attached the case study description at the bottom so that you can read it to write the paper.

Please watch the following YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXQwtTOnLvg) which complements the material covered in the evolutionary perspective chapter, the psychosocial perspective chapter(s), and the first article about which you will write a review paper this semester. In the linked video, Dr. Puts describes the evolution of some important gender differences in mating behavior. For example, he describes why men evolved to secure and provide resources and why women evolved to prefer men who can provide consistent resources. He also describes how evolutionary theory helps us understand why women’s mate preferences change over the course of their menstrual cycle and why men (should and do) care for their own children and not other men’s children.

After you have viewed the video (and taken notes), please 1) read the attached Case Study description

(and 2) answer the application questions noted below. You will type your answers in a separate document and upload it in this drop box for credit. Please remember to enumerate your list of answers and to NOT copy and paste the questions into your paper.

  1. According to evolutionary psychology, to what type of women should men be most attracted? Why?
  2. According to evolutionary psychology,  to what type of men should women be most attracted? Why?
  3. How could evolutionary psychology explain what would make Dylan’s first wife, Whitney, stay with him even though she knew about his infidelities?
  4. According to evolutionary psychology, what would a woman married to Dylan have to do in order to make Dylan initiate a divorce?
  5. Why does Dylan not use birth control, according to evolutionary psychology?
  6. Using an evolutionary psychological perspective, make the case for why Dylan’s ‘side pieces’ would use birth control when they are with him. Then, make the case for why Dylan’s ‘side pieces’ would NOT use birth control when they are with him. Be specific and explain your answer clearly.
  7. What are some problems with the evolutionary psychology explanations noted here?
  8. Use Freud’s theory to explain Dylan’s promiscuity. How does the focus of Freud’s theory differ from that of evolutionary psychology?

Natural Versus Human-Made Disasters

Disasters, for the most part, occur without warning and can have devastating effects. Forces of nature and geological shifts in the earth’s inner core can instantaneously alter the lives of individuals and entire communities. When this happens, the cause of the event can be scientifically explained. Sometimes disasters are not natural events. Consider instances where human action caused the disaster. What if entire neighborhoods are destroyed by fire as a result of an individual intentionally starting a wildfire? What if an airplane crashes due to human error and kills hundreds of people? What if the lack of effective road and bridge maintenance leads to an unnoticed structural error, which later results in the collapse of a populated bridge in a busy city? At the same time, natural disasters can become more catastrophic due to human influences such as climate change, the manner in which communities build cities to withstand disaster, or social segregation causing greater impacts to some communities over others.

For this Discussion, think about similarities and differences in effects and interventions between natural and human-made disasters.

By Day 4

Post a brief comparison between natural and human-made disasters. Then, apply the ecosystem approach to explain how the various systems effect a disaster and how these systems influence intervention. Finally, explain what type of debriefing you would recommend to social service providers responding to disaster survivors.

Ethics Homework ESSAY 3

This assignment should be submitted to the proper TurnItIn Drop Box by 12:00 NOON on the due date listed here. The submission will be graded according to the rubric appearing in the syllabus, and should be   thoroughly proofread and properly cited.   Limit your response to   no more than 3,000 words   (not including citations). Remember that all assignments can be turned in early for evaluation, and you will receive feedback within 72 hours.

This assignment requires you to write an essay of the same type as the first two essays, but with four additional criteria:

1. Your essay must be on one of the three topics listed below: capital punishment, abortion, or active euthanasia.

2. Your essay must be on a DIFFERENT topic from ONE of your previous two essays. If you submitted essays on two different topics for Homeworks 1 & 2, then all three topics are available to you, since you’ve already written on two different topics. However, if you submitted on the SAME topic and it was one of these three, then you MUST switch to a different topic for this essay. Obviously, regardless of what you wrote your previous papers on, active euthanasia is available as a topic, since neither of the first two essays could have been on that topic.

3. Each of the topics now has a SPECIFIC SET OF QUESTIONS, which must be answered in your thesis, and defnded in your arguments. If your thesis does not address the specific questions listed, your assignment will be considered incomplete, and you will receive a grade no higher than a C.

4. Each topic has a set of assigned readings, which you should have completed. You do not have to utilize the arguments made in these readings, but you DO have to ADDRESS those arguments if they come up. That is, if you make a point in one of YOUR arguments which was countered by one of the assigned readings, then you should acknowledge that and attempt to respond. If you are making novel arguments, not addressed by these authors, then this won’t affect your essay at all. But if your arguments also appear in these readings, acknowledge what the author has said about it and respond intelligently.

CHOOSE ONE OF THESE TOPICS:

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
Assigned Readings:
Ernest van den Haag “A Defense of the Death Penalty” (handout)
Walter Berns “The Morality of Capital Punishment” (325-329)
Stephen Nathanson “The Death Penalty as a Symbolic Issue” (330-337)
Jeffrey Reiman “Why the Death Penalty Should Be Abolished in the United States” (handout)
Helen Prejean “Would Jesus Pull the Switch?” (handout)
Thesis Questions: Is it morally permissible for the government to execute people convicted of premeditated murder? What about people convicted of forcible rape? What about people convicted of international drug trafficking? Are there any factors about the criminal beyond what crime they committed that affect any of your answers? Defend all four your answers with arguments, and make sure your arguments are CONSISTENT for each answer. If your argument in defense of one answer contradicts your argument in defense of another, then you have weakened your own position and will be penalized for irrational self-contradiction.

ABORTION
Assigned Readings:
Judith Jarvis Thomson “A Defense of Abortion” (186-204)
Mary Anne Warren “On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion” (205-222)
Don Marquis “Why Abortion Is Immoral’ (223-231)
Rosalind Hursthouse “Virtue Theory and Abortion” (232-244)
Thesis Questions: Is it morally permissible for a woman who became pregnant as a result of forcible rape to abort that pregnancy? What about a woman who became pregnant through consensual intercourse, but who lacks the resources required to care for herself during pregnancy or to care for a child once it is born? What about a woman who simply does not wish to ever have children? Does how far along the pregnancy is affect any of your answers? Defend all four of your answers with arguments, and make sure your arguments are CONSISTENT for each answer. If your argument in defense of one answer contradicts your argument in defense of another, then you have weakened your own position and will be penalized for irrational self-contradiction.

ACTIVE EUTHANASIA
Assigned Readings:
“Euthanasia” by Judith Boss (handout in supplemental readings folder)
“Active and Passive Euthanasia” by James Rachels (pp. 246-252)
“The Intentional Termination of Life” by Bonnie Steinbock (pp. 253-263)
Thesis Questions: When, if ever, is a medical professional morally justified in providing to a patient a medication or medical procedure that is intended to quickly and painlessly end the patient’s life? When, if ever, would it be morally impermissible for a medical professional to do this? Try to include as many relevant factors in your answer (e.g., patient’s age, mental state, diagnosis, medical status, consent, etc.) as possible. Defend your answers with arguments, and make sure your arguments are CONSISTENT for each answer. If your argument in defense of one answer contradicts your argument in defense of another, then you have weakened your own position and will be penalized for irrational self-contradiction.

fair criminal justice NEED PLAGERISM REPORT

Consider the following scenario:

John Mathews drove while intoxicated and caused an accident. An elderly couple was seriously injured in the wreck. The couple was hospitalized for several weeks, and was in physical therapy for one year after the incident. John however had received only minor injuries.

John has a previous history of drunk driving. He had joined the alcoholic anonymous groups to get over alcoholism but that has been of no help. After leaving the group, he again went back to drinking. He has earlier been involved in drunken driving accidents and has been on probation for causing these accidents and causing injury to people.

  • What would be the fair criminal justice sentence to John and why? Be objective and consider the rights of the elderly victims in this case.
  • Conduct research to ascertain the recidivism rates for drinking and driving. Also, find out how many people are killed each year by drinking and driving. Are the current laws effective or should they be modified? What changes to the laws would you make?
  • What are the financial and psychological impacts of victims in these types of cases? What are the financial and psychological impacts for the family members of the victims?
  • Discuss key issues in objectivity through the analysis of the case scenario. Should a victimologist with a minor history of drug or alcohol abuse be asked to evaluate the victims in this case? Why? Support your rationale with examples or situations that you have experienced in real life.

Submission Details

  • Submit your answers in 2–3 pages Microsoft Word document.
  • Support your responses with examples.
  • Cite any sources in APA format.

Original work only!

2 paragrapgh each and separte response.

1. “Appropriate Standards”

  • Select an organization with which you are familiar. Identify the compliance laws that you believe would be most relevant to this organization. Justify your response.
  • Define the scope of an IT compliance audit that would verify whether or not this organization is in compliance with the laws you identified.

2.  “Writing System and User Requirements” Please respond to the following:

  • In your reading this week, you looked at scope creep and the IEEE 830-1998 standards. Read the following discussion questions and post your initial response by Wednesday for full points. Return on a couple of other days before the Sunday due date and interact with a couple of classmates. Respond to any posters who have commented on your post and respond to the posts of others. Let’s get the conversation going… and don’t forget to have fun while you’re learning!
    • Requirements gathering is tough. Clients are often unskilled in technology and will be unable to articulate their problems and symptoms in technical terms. To create a sufficiently detailed list of requirements, the software engineer or systems analyst must be a skilled interviewer.
      • Discuss different techniques you can adopt to overcome the “scope creep” situation. Your answer should align with the IEEE 830-1998 standards.
      • Notes:
        • A phenomenon known as “scope creep” can derail a project when new features keep getting added, which eventually fall outside the scope of the original project. Give an example of how this might happen if your team was designing a payroll application.
        • IEEE830 defines how system requirements should be documented to ensure that all parties are on the same page regarding what the new system is expected to do or the problems it is expected to resolve. Where might some breakdowns occur?

3.     “Chapters 2 and 3”

Refer to the section marked “Discussion Questions (Evaluation)” at the back of each of the assigned chapters (Chapters 2 & 3):

  1. For each chapter, pick one of the discussion questions to address. Copy the question into the forum, along with your answer (see example, below). We are looking for a post for each chapter.
  2. Reply to at least two fellow students with a follow-up question, comment, or a different perspective on their discussion questions.

Example Response:

Chapter 2. #101. Consider a ball at rest in the middle of a toy wagon. When the wagon is pulled forward, the ball rolls against the back of the wagon. A friend asks what force pushes the ball to the back of the wagon. Interpret this observation in terms of Newton’s first law.

Answer: I’d tell my friend that there is no force applied to the ball. This phenomenon is actually due to the inertia of the ball. Initially, the wagon and the ball are both stationary relative to the ground. In order to get the wagon moving along the ground, a force must be applied to it. The force applied to the wagon but not to the ball. Consistent with Newton’s law of inertia, the ball remains stationary relative to the ground. With the wagon moving forward relative to the ground, but the ball remaining stationary relative to the ground, the position of the ball in the wagon shifts to the back.

Chapter 3: Consider a bob attached by a string a simple simple pendulum that swings to and fro. (a) Why does the tension force in the string not do work on the pendulum? (b) Explain, however, why the force due to gravity on the pendulum at nearly every point does do work on the pendulum. (c) Where is the single position of the pendulum where “no work by gravity” occurs?

Example Reply to a Fellow Student

In your explanation, the frame of reference is the ground. Why do you have to relate everything to the ground?

Budget

Assignment: The Client Budget

Staying on budget is critical both in maintaining the event planner’s reputation and in allowing the event planner to stay in business. Budgeting includes not only budgeting for all the costs involved with an event but also including the independent event planner’s payment to themselves for their services. Allowing a percentage contingency is also a good idea for the unexpected issues that might surface during production.

Scenario:

The Progressive Auto Products Company, located in Detroit, Michigan, is a relatively new company launching their third product in May. Their third product is a windshield that gets progressively darker or lighter depending on the light conditions that are registered through light sensors on the glass (somewhat similar to eyeglass lenses) and based on state automobile windshield laws. They have contracted you as an independent event planner to produce this launch event with a total budget of $400,000 for the 2-day event ($200,000 for each day).

Friday: They want to have a launch event on Friday evening beginning with a reception that is not too loud for 1,000 attendees. The reception will last 3 hours, beginning at 6:00 p.m. They also want to showcase a car on a revolving stage with a spokesperson giving demonstrations using commercial lighting lamps to highlight the adaptive capabilities of their new windshield. There should be substantial hors d’oeuvres, and an open bar as well as decor to match with the theme you selected for the event. There will be a need for security guards, traffic and parking lot coordination, and personnel to staff the event.

Saturday: The event will continue on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with the same number of attendees. This event will be hosted at the local race track with a famous race-car driver demonstrating and commenting on the car’s new windshield and providing autographs. A skywriter will be hired to put the company logo in the sky above the racetrack in the company colors. There will also be demonstrations on the safety of the glass, a children’s area with rides and staff, and hamburgers and hotdogs with beans, salad, pie, and soft drinks, along with a popular band playing songs in the background.

Provide a prospective budget for either the Friday or Saturday event. Your client works in the finance world and will be questioning every budget item. Therefore, even though you have a large budget to work with, make sure you have examined each item and provided realistic and reasonable costs. You will not want to quote the highest price on any item without substantial reasoning.

Checklist:

  • On Tab 1: Narrative, write a short (2- to 3-paragraph minimum) narrative on the theme and overall budget for either the Friday night or Saturday event (be sure to specify which event you chose). Remember to explain how you met the client’s needs while you maintained the budget. For example, if you chose the Friday event, make sure to explain audiovisual, staffing, and engagement needs, and for Saturday, please note the types of rides for the children. Put all the expenses on Tab 2. On Tab 3, provide the sources.
  • Submit the completed Launch Budget Spreadsheet below to the Dropbox based on your choice of either the Friday or Saturday event. Feel free to add or modify any part of the spreadsheet to best fit your event.

Note: If you find your costs are too high, try providing a slightly different version of what the client wants.

Access the Launch Budget Spreadsheet template.
