Written Instructions

These are the guidelines for the written instructions. Due by midnight on Friday, July 13th

These instructions are typically 4-5 pages long, you need to use at least 5 visuals (can be hand drawn, scanned in, Clip Art, etc). Typically, the instructions are about 12-15 steps long.

There are two examples of written instructions in the pink booklet of sample assignments. Also, make sure to review Chapter 6 in our textbook for more information.

With written instructions, you need to explain a task or a project at a medium level of difficulty. For example, you couldn’t do something like making Kraft Mac and Cheese. That’s too basic. You could do something like making homemade lasagna.

Most people choose to explain how to cook or bake something, an arts and crafts project, doing a basic woodworking project, car repair, maintaining a piece of sporting equipment (tuning skis, truing a bike wheel, etc), some type of first aid procedure, etc.

You need to use the main headings that I have suggested, but you can vary them slightly. For instance, you might have Tools, Supplies, and Materials, rather than Ingredients, Utensils, and Mixing Bowls.

In the Estimated Time and Cost, you need to have a basic introduction of your instructions to explain the time involved, the approximate cost (if appropriate), the 4-5 main steps, and then most critical step of all.

In the Instructions, you typically will have 12-15 steps. That is about average. You can give tips, suggestions, and anticipate potential problems. If you want to use a Note to point out something more, do that underneath a step (see the examples in the booklet).

Try to begin most of your steps with a command like: Place, Position, Move, Grasp, etc. Look at the example of the one on Pecan Tassies to see what I mean. Also, try not to use more than about two-three sentences per step.

Then, you have Final Reminders where you review the 4-5 main steps, stress the most critical step of all again, and give some final thoughts on the project.

Make sure that when you are doing the instructions that you encourage your reader that he/she can do the task or project.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

And here are some examples of this assignment.

Final version Statement

A group of frustrated trainers have had it. They are tired of criticism from administration. They are irate because those same officials have for years provided them with in-service activities that are useless or superficial. Consequently, they have decided to generate their own ideas about the kind of staff development that is needed at all levels of experience and expertise to help them train more effectively.

Assume that you are the leader of that group. You have the responsibility of writing the final version of this statement on essential staff development that the group will hand to the CEO.  Make sure to include an introduction that clearly indicates that you are writing to a Superintendent (e.g., Dear XYZ), and that you provide the appropriate background context so the reader can make sense of the responses to the following core questions.
You must find answers to the following core questions:
How can caring be incorporated effectively into the curriculum?
How is teaching a science? An art? Both of these at the same time?
What is the proper role of psychology in selecting instructional practices?
What kinds of knowledge does the effective teacher possess?

Each heading should be centered and boldface. Your paper should exhibit
content also from:
1. the reading in the text (emphasizing but not limited to Part Two) and
2. At least two sources from Nova’s electronic databases, but you should cite all claims and statements that require support.

3. Should be 5-7 pages in length and not exceed 2500 words (excluding references)

It should exemplify skillful writing, clarity, and strict adherence to APA guidelines.

SOCW 6070 Week 10 Assignment – Leadership Assessment

Earlier in the course, you were asked to informally evaluate your leadership skills and qualities. In this Final Project, you use formal assessment tools to identify your areas of strength and areas in which you need further development. You may use the results of this self-assessment to develop a plan to gain the skills and experiences that will help you move toward achieving your short- and long-term professional goals and objectives.

Using the assessment tools provided in Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice, conduct a self-assessment of your own leadership characteristics, style, and skills. Complete at least four assessment tools for this Male self-assessment. In addition, select one tool to give to a colleague or supervisor so he or she can assess your leadership skills.

Final Project (3-page in APA format)

Evaluate your current leadership characteristics, style, and skills based on the assessment tools you and your colleague/supervisor completed. Be sure to:

  • Include actual results or summaries of the results you collected using these tools
  • Identify personal leadership strengths as well as areas for improvement
  • Include references to the leadership concepts covered in this course and relevant issues related to ethics, diversity, and power in the organizational setting

Must contain at least 4 references and citations from the following materials:

The continuum of human evolution

 Goal

The goal of this assignment is for you to synthesize the theory and data we’ve covered about modern humans (Homo sapiens), our hominin ancestors, and our chimpanzee cousins, and explain the traits that you think make us human. Given the traits you think are most important, you will lay out the argument for which hominin ancestor was the first you are willing to call “human”. There isn’t a right or wrong answer to this question. I just want to know what you think and to see you use evidence from the class to support your argument.

Prompt

What are the key traits of Homo sapiens that you think makes us “human”? Which hominin species from the genus Homo do you think first qualifies as “human”? How do both these species significantly (or not) differ from Chimpanzees? The hominin species you select as the first “human” must be a member of the genus Homo (1.5 mya or more recent), and you must focus on a single species to compare to Homo sapiens. (If you think only Homo sapiens can be called human, then compare them to Homo neanderthalensis, arguing why their traits differ enough that you don’t consider Neanderthals human yet.) Compare both to Chimpanzees. You will need to include anatomical, behavioral, and cultural traits in your argument.
 Instructions

Read: Use the information already part of this class. Review the traits and the species you want to write about. Only use the Explorations textbook, module pages, and links provided on the module pages for your argument. Do not use direct quotes, whether cited or not. Everything must be written in your own words.

Organize: You will want to present information on the following kinds of traits for both Homo sapiens, your one chosen hominin species, and chimpanzees, in a comparative structure. For example, “Homo sapiens do X” and include a description and details about this. “Homo erectus did X too in mostly similar ways”, and include a description of how it is similar or different. “Chimpanzees are different because they do Y.” “Given these similarities, I think Homo erectus can be considered the first “human” hominin.” Also discuss the selective pressures that favored these traits, and how selection drove the evolution of “human” traits we see today.

This worksheet can help you organize things: Capstone Assignment Organization.docx
The traits you should discuss include:

evidence for modern bipedal anatomy (pelvis, femur, foot, etc), compared to the knuckle-walking anatomy of chimpanzees. Describe each feature and how it functions.
skull shape and size, teeth size, and brain size, and how natural selection has shaped these features in response to diet and behavior
social lives, and life history features (specifically pay attention to the ideas covered in the second half of Week 7 discussing life history, and how these have changed due to selective pressures.
cultural artifacts like tools, clothing, shelters, fire, art, or other decorative activities. Relate these to diet, anatomy, social behavior, and life history as relevant.
Present: Share what you have learned in a clear and organized way. You can do this in a variety of formats.

4 short written essays (300-400 words each) one for each of the four numbered set of traits listed above. Or one longer essay doing the same (4 – 5 pages).
PowerPoint presentation (slides only, though be careful it has all the needed information). You will want to have several slides covering each of the points above.
A video of you giving your PowerPoint. You can also play the PowerPoint and record a voice-over.
A poster or drawing for each species or each of the 4 points above with species comparisons for each point.
A newspaper or magazine article, tinder profile, or other written presentation of the information that includes images and a bit more casual writing style or perspective on the presentation
A video of a skit or other performance about the species. I love interpretive dance and puppets 🙂
A quiz show about each species
A song or poem about each species
You tell me! I’m open to fun new ideas – message me and let’s discuss
Cite: list all sources of information you used in your presentation. This can be a single page separate from the presentation work, or incorporated into the presentation in creative ways. Let’s talk if you aren’t sure how to do this. Please use APA citation format.

Module 10 Course Project – PowerPoint Presentation Due

Module 10 Content

Follow the instructions below and the attached rubric closely- I am excited to see your final presentation!

Course Competencies:

  • Incorporate professional values, attitudes, and expectations regarding ageism when caring for older adults.
  • Outline the importance of advocating for older adults in the management of their care.

Your supervisor provided some valuable feedback in response to your outline! They are excited to see the PowerPoint slideshow you are creating for your topic’s in-service training. Having developed a number of presentations for in-services, your supervisor offered the following advice:

“When developing a slideshow, it’s important to be mindful of how you layout your content. For an in-service presentation, the slides should present key points, be arranged logically, without extraneous information contributing to a cluttered look. The audience should get a lot of the content from listening to what you say, not just from reading the slides. Using the Speaker Notes feature in PowerPoint is a great way to include relevant details that you want to provide without overloading the slides.”

Your supervisor wants you to work from your outline and prepare a visually appealing PowerPoint slideshow for the in-service presentation. They said it should:

  1. Have a title slide.
  2. Contain 6-10 content slides pertaining to the important content areas for your presentation topic.
  3. Use the Speaker Notes feature in PowerPoint to reduce the amount of text that appears on the slides. (The Speaker Notes will contain the text that will guide what you say while presenting the slides.)
  4. Be written using proper spelling/grammar.
  5. Cite at least 2 credible references and present the sources in APA format on a References slide.

For information about creating PowerPoint presentations or adding Speaker Notes, consult the resources below.

Tip:

Submit your completed assignment to the dropbox below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.

“This too shall pass”

There was a king and he once said to the court sages – I have a ring with one of the finest diamonds in the world and I want to hide a message under the stone that can be useful in a situation of extreme despair.  I will give this ring to my heirs and I want it to serve faithfully.  Think of what kind of message will be there.  It must be very short to fit in the ring.

The sages knew how to write treatises, but did not express themselves in one short sentence.  They Thought and thought, but did not come up with anything.

The king complained about the failure of his venture to an faithful old servant who raised him from infancy and was part of the family.  And the old man said to him:

“I’m not a sage, I’m not educated, but I know such a message. For many years spent in the palace, I met a lot of people. And once I served a visiting mystic whom your father invited. And he gave me this message.  I ask that you don’t read it now. Save it under the stone and open it only when there’s no way out at all. The king listened to the old servant.

After some time, the enemies attacked the country and the king lost the war.  He fled on his horse and his enemies pursued him.  He was alone, his enemies were many. He rode to the end of the road.  There was a huge deep cliff before him, if he fell there, it would be the end.  He could not go back, as the enemies were approaching. He already heard the clatter of their horses’ hooves.  He had no way out.  He was in complete despair.

And then he remembered the ring.  He opened it and found an inscription: “This too shall pass.”

After reading the message, he felt that everything was quiet.  Apparently the pursuers got lost and proceeded in the wrong direction. Horses were no longer heard.

The king was filled with gratitude to the servant and the unknown mystic. The words were powerful.  He closed the ring.  And set out on the road.  He gathered his army and returned his state.

On the day when he returned to the palace, they arranged a magnificent meeting, a feast for the whole world – the people loved their king. The king was happy and proud.

The old servant came up to him and said softly: “Even in this moment, look at the message again.”

The King said, “Now I am a winner, people are celebrating my return, I’m not in despair, not in a hopeless situation.”

“Listen to this old servant,” the servant answered. “The message works not only in moments when everything is bad, but also in moments of victory.”

The king opened the ring and read:

“This too shall pass.”

And again he felt a silence fall over him, although he was in the midst of a noisy dancing crowd.  His pride dissolved.  He understood the message.  He was a wise man.

And then the old man said to the king; “Do you remember everything that happened to you? Nothing and no feeling is permanent. As night changes day, so moments of joy and despair replace each other. Accept them as the nature of things, as part of life”
