MANAGING HUMAN RESOURCES

Assignment Overview

As a health education program director/coordinator, you will likely be called upon to supervise/manage staff responsible for implementing your health education programs. In this capacity, you may encounter situations in which members of your team are underperforming. The following video clip depicts such a scenario and two ways in which a manager/supervisor might respond. Click to view the video clip.

Case Assignment

After viewing the clip and reading Chapter 40, Section 1 of the Community Tool Box (i.e., Achieving and Maintaining Quality Performance), address the following questions in a four-page essay:

Discuss the merits of each of the approaches taken by the manager upon realizing that his employee was underperforming.

  • What might the implications of adopting the former approach be for this employee’s performance? Please explain.
  • What might the implications of adopting the latter approach be for this employee’s performance? Please explain.
  • What are the basic principles of Total Quality Management (TQM)? Which TQM principles seem most relevant to the scenario shown in the video clip? Why?

NOTE: Please ensure that you support your analysis with evidence from background readings and additional scholarly sources.

Summarizing EDA insights in a visually engaging way (data visualization)

Scenario – You receive this email after submitting findings from an exploratory analysis:

Dear Favorite Analyst at TableauCeutical Inc,

Thank you for sending over the findings from your exploratory analysis. Nicely done!

Now we need to package your exploratory findings into an insights summary deck for our new COO. The insights summary is a PowerPoint deck that allows us to help focus her attention on the most important components of your analysis and ensure she has something tangible to reference in other introductory meetings she is having as meets with other departments.

Unfortunately, simply taking screenshots from Tableau won’t give us the professional, camera-ready aesthetic we need to communicate. Many, visuals will likely need to be rebuilt so we can have more control over the final look. We’ll want to add text annotations to further explain what the visual is communicating, but without making our COO digest whole paragraphs. As you can imagine, COOs have more demands on their time and attention they have hours in the day, so we’ll need to make sure she has the most important information served up in a simple, clean, and concise way. She needs to be able to consume the insights in less than 10 minutes, so we’ll need to be deliberate about what we highlight, what we deemphasize, and how it flows.

If the summary insights go over well, I wouldn’t be surprised if she asks us to build a dashboard for her in the next week or two (Module 5) so she can have the information she needs at her fingertips. As you build the deck, please review the assignment objectives, requirements, and submission expectations below. They are pretty details, but much of credibility stems from following directions.

Please send the slide deck (PowerPoint or Google Slides) along with the packaged Tableau workbook from last week by the end of week (11:59 pm CT on Sunday). PDFs and unpackaged Tableau workbooks won’t be accepted.

Thank you again for your help!

Discussion Board #3 – Maximum Security Inmate Classification

No unread replies.No replies.

In Chapter 10 – Managing Risk Through Offender Classification, we learned how classification and risk assessment are used to improve the effectiveness of correctional agencies.

Risk Management and the Classification of Prison Inmates

Initial Classification Process:  Until the 1970s, most states used the clinical classification process, to decide what type of prison housing, work assignment, and treatment programs would be best for the inmate. Currently, most states use an objective classification system—an actuarial risk assessment—to determine an inmate’s initial assignment to a prison. During the 1970s, correctional agencies attempted to identify factors in an inmate’s background and prison behavior that are predictive of violence or escape. Objective classification systems were developed that could assign weighted scores to various background, sentence, and behavioral factors.

Reclassification of Inmates: After initial classification, prison staff regularly review inmates’ progress and move them to a different security level when their needs warrant a change.  The reclassification review is used to modify the original classification and possibly reassign the inmate to a different prison. Reclassification has three basic purposes:

  1. to consider changes in program needs, mental health, or medical condition;
  2. as an incentive for good behavior by dropping the security level of inmates who conform and follow prison rules; and
  3. to identify the need to increase inmates security level because of misconduct and resultant disciplinary action.

In this Discussion Board, let’s discuss whether or not you think that inmates assigned to maximum security prisons have no further use for classification by administrators.  As a reminder, maximum security prisons are grades of high security level used by prison systems which offer an enhanced level of security to prevent prisoners from escaping and from doing harm to other inmates or guards.  Do you agree or disagree that inmates have no further use for classification by prison officials?  Give reasons for your decision.

Uber Pays the Price

Nine years ago, Uber revolutionized the taxi industry and the way people commute. With the simple mission “to bring transportation—for everyone, everywhere,” today Uber has reached a valuation of around $70 billion and claimed a market share high of almost 90% in 2015. However, in June 2017 Uber experienced a series of bad press regarding an alleged culture of sexual harassment, which is what most experts believe caused their market share to fall to 75%.

In February of 2017 a former software engineer, Susan Fowler, wrote a lengthy post on her website regarding her experience of being harassed by a manager who was not disciplined by human resources for his behavior. In her post, Fowler wrote that Uber’s HR department and members of upper management told her that because it was the man’s first offense, they would only give him a warning. During her meeting with HR about the incident, Fowler was also advised that she should transfer to another department within the organization. According to Fowler, she was ultimately left no choice but to transfer to another department, despite having specific expertise in the department in which she had originally been working.

As her time at the company went on, she began meeting other women who worked for the company who relayed their own stories of harassment. To her surprise, many of the women reported being harassed by the same person who had harassed her. As she noted in her blog, “It became obvious that both HR and management had been lying about this being his ‘first offense.’” Fowler also reported a number of other instances that she identified as sexist and inappropriate within the organization and claims that she was disciplined severely for continuing to speak out. Fowler eventually left Uber after about two years of working for the company, noting that during her time at Uber the percentage of women working there had dropped to 6% of the workforce, down from 25% when she first started.

Following the fallout from Fowler’s lengthy description of the workplace on her website, Uber’s chief executive Travis Kalanick publicly condemned the behavior described by Fowler, calling it “abhorrent and against everything Uber stands for and believes in.” But later in March, Uber board member Arianna Huffington claimed that she believed “sexual harassment was not a systemic problem at the company.” Amid pressure from bad media attention and the company’s falling market share, Uber made some changes after an independent investigation resulted in 215 complaints. As a result, 20 employees were fired for reasons ranging from sexual harassment to bullying to retaliation to discrimination, and Kalanick announced that he would hire a chief operating officer to help manage the company. In an effort to provide the leadership team with more diversity, two senior female executives were hired to fill the positions of chief brand officer and senior vice president for leadership and strategy.

Critical Thinking Questions (Answer questions separately, NOT an ESSAY!!!! No bullet points.)

1Based on Cox’s business case for diversity, what are some positive outcomes that may result in changes to Uber’s leadership team?

2Under what form of Canadian or federal legislation was Fowler protected?

3What strategies should have been put in place to help prevent sexual harassment incidents like this from happening in the first place?

4What is the role of a leader in Managing Diversity in the workplace?

BUS 624 WK2 DISCUSSION 1&2

Prior to beginning work on this discussion,

In United States v. Hall, 47 F.3d 1091 (11th Cir. 1995), the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals discussed the difference between a business and an individual’s reasonable expectation of privacy in the area around their home or business (called the curtilage). In Hall, a government agent seized a bag of shredded documents from a dumpster located on the property of Bet-Air, Inc. Hall filed a motion to suppress the evidence on the grounds that the search and seizure was a violation of the Fourth Amendment. Review United States v. Hall and discuss the following:

  • What was the Court of Appeal’s decision?
  • Was the search and seizure a violation of the Fourth Amendment? Why or why not?
  • Would the result have been different if the dumpster was on private property rather than on commercial property?
  • Suppose you were an executive at Bet-Air. What recommendations would you make to help Bet-Air assert an expectation of privacy in the dumpster?

Your initial response should be a minimum of 200 words.  USE THE IRAC(ISSUE, RULE, APPLICATION, CONCLUSION) RULE.

DISCUSSION 2

Prior to beginning work on this discussion,

  • Review Chapter 6 of the course textbook.

Jones was the attorney for the Town of Smithville. He filed a defamation lawsuit against a newspaper that served the Smithville area and against the writer of that newspaper’s Town Crier column. Jones based his case on statements that appeared in the column. The writer of the column referred to Jones as a “political hatchet man” and as “one of the biggest powers behind the throne in local government.” The writer also asserted that “Jones pulls the strings” and raised the question whether Jones was “leading Smithville to destruction.” What arguments should the defendants make in an effort to avoid defamation liability? Should Jones win his case? Your initial response should be a minimum of 200 words.
