 Survival Guide for Leaders, Heiftez & Linsky, 2002

In so much as sport management is the application of business principles to the sport industry, it is beneficial for the student to examine literature that is outside of sport and identify ways to make application of those principles within the sport context. This is the case with Heifetz & Linsky’s article Survival Guide for Leaders (Heifetz & Linsky, 2002). In this article the student will learn about the external pressures and the internal pressures that leaders must manage in order to survive in these important positions.

Summarize the main points of the article.

· “The ‘survival guide’ has two main parts. The first looks outward, offering tactical advice about relating to your organization and the people in it. It is designed to protect you from those people trying to push you aside before you complete your initiative (p. 3).”

o Identify and describe the four (4) pieces of tactical advice given by the authors.

· “The second [part] looks inward, focusing on your own human needs and vulnerabilities. It is designed to keep you from bringing yourself down. (p. 3)”

o Identify and describe these two (2) pieces of advice given by the authors.

Analyze the main points of the article and discuss their application to the manager/leader in the sport context.

· Why do leaders fail to get off the dance floor and on to the balcony?

· One of my first acts as a head volleyball coach was to cut a walk-on who was not “good enough.” Why was that an important decision/act for me and for my team?

· Describe a situation where you have seen someone turn up the heat to produce a productive range of stress? Was it effective? Why or why not?

· If leaders are supposed to be problem solvers, why should they let (demand, expect) others solve organizational problems?

· How can someone be a leader if they should restrain their desire for control and their need for importance?

· How do the authors recommend anchoring yourself? Which of these is the most important, why?

· How do (should) we as Christians anchor ourselves?

Conclusion

· If leadership brings with it these kinds of challenges, why do people still choose to be leaders?

· What are your key take-aways from the article?

· How do the concepts presented in the article complement (align with) or contract your Biblical world view?

Your assignment must be completed based on the following criteria:

· At least 3 pages;

· 1-inch margins;

· Double-spaced;

· 12-point, Times New Roman font;

· A reference page in APA format with the article citation and any other sources used in the assignment; and

· Clear biblical integration

Include a title on the top line of the first page, and include your name. No other identifying information is needed.

Part 1: Research Security Awareness Policies (0/1 completed)

1. Review the security awareness training policies at the following websites:

o Health care: State of North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (https://policies.ncdhhs.gov/departmental/policies-manuals/section-viii-privacy-and-security/manuals/security-manual/@@display-file/policy_file/DHHS%20Security%20Manual.pdf)

o Higher education: University of San Francisco (http://www.usfca.edu/its/security/seta/)

 Question to answer

2. For each sample security awareness training policy that you reviewed in the step above, discuss the policy’s main components. You should focus on the need for a security awareness program and its key elements.

———————————————————————————————-

Part 2: Create a Security Awareness Policy (0/6 completed)

Note: A strong security awareness policy is a key component of a strong organizational security posture. The effectiveness of a security awareness training policy and program will directly influence how well employees will value and protect the organization’s security position. When writing a security awareness training policy, consider the following questions:

· Is the policy statement as concise and readable as possible? For example, no more than one to three sentences.

· Is the entire policy as concise and readable as possible? For example, no more than two to three pages.

· Does the policy align well with other governing documents?

· Does the policy speak directly to the target audience?

· Does the policy state the “why” with only the minimal detail, and rely on standards or guidelines for the “how”? Policies should be written in such a way that they will not need frequent updates.

· Does the policy adequately describe scope and responsibilities?

· Are the policy’s revision, approval, and distribution documented?

After the policy has been approved, its success relies on proper delivery and understanding. To simply give a new employee 5 minutes to read and sign a policy during orientation is not enough. Focused and interactive “policy understanding” sessions should guarantee every employee understands the policy’s reasoning and necessity. Customizing these sessions according to department or function can drastically increase how much employees retain of and apply the training during their work. Repeat sessions reinforce the policies and keep material fresh in their minds.

o The organization wants to monitor and control use of the Internet by implementing content filtering.

o The organization wants to eliminate personal use of organization-owned IT assets and systems.

o The organization wants to monitor and control use of the e-mail system by implementing e-mail security controls.

o The organization wants to implement security awareness training policy mandates for all new hires and existing employees. Policy definitions are to include GLBA and customer privacy data requirements, in addition to a mandate for annual security awareness training for all employees.

Task:       Write a research paper using evidence to support a thesis that addresses your research question examining a current issue or event in the news from the perspective of your field of study. The audience is people who are generally educated but do not have extensive knowledge of your field or topic.

Length:   At least 2000 words

Sources: Minimum of 6. At least 3 of these must be from scholarly journals, and all sources should be selected based on reliability, currency, and level of information/analysis. The UMGC library will be very useful in helping you find appropriate sources. You can, but do not have to, include all of the sources from your annotated bibliography.

Due date and revision: The first draft of the research paper is due by the end of Week 5. Submit your draft as an attachment (Microsoft Word is preferred) to this assignment folder. This should be as complete a draft as possible, in order to receive the most helpful feedback. In working on your draft, you may want to look at the rubric that will ultimately be used to grade your final paper. You can see it when viewing these instructions through the Assignments area of the classroom.

During Week 6, you will receive feedback on your draft.

You will then revise your paper and submit it by the end of Week 7 to the folder “Assignment 3: Research Paper, revised draft.” This version will be graded using the rubric and will count for 35% of your course grade.

Your instructor may or may not complete the rubric for your first draft, but only the grade on your revised paper will count toward your course grade.

Scenario:

In early 1975, brothers John and Michael Phillips founded the Stone Horse Supply Company. John and Michael, both horse riders and horse owners, had developed a horse feed to keep their own horses healthier and happier and found it in demand from other locals and neighbors. In response to that growing local demand, John and Michael converted their small home operation into a rented building in town and went forward with the business of manufacturing and selling specialized horse feeds.   Through the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, the Rock Horse Food Supply Company enjoyed modest prosperity, providing niche products to the local area with their products selling in most of the nearby counties. However, in early 2006, the situation began to dramatically change. In early 2006, John and Michael were contacted by representative of the largest chain of stores in the region. One of the officers of the large chain was a horse owner and had been buying the special horse feed for his horse. The officer felt that because she enjoyed the product so much and knew that other local customers had used the product and perhaps the product could have success on a statewide or even a national scale. Since its onset, John and Michael had run their business on virtually a manual basis. Suppliers were mostly local with sourcing decisions based on the supplier’s proximity. Forecasting and ordering from suppliers were completed through phone calls and faxes with new orders based on manual counts rather than any systematic process. Stone Horse Supply Company often found itself with either excess material or expediting material in from suppliers at the last minute to keep from missing a customer deadline. Likewise, Stone Horse Supply Company was in the same facility it had started in, a smaller facility that had an unusual layout that John and Michael had made minor modifications to through the years to adapt to problems encountered during those years. While John and Michael were excited about the prospect of the company and its product becoming a mainstream product with vastly increased sales, they both knew that they were already struggling to meet current customer demand and that the current methods used to run the company would be insufficient as it entered this next phase. More specifically, John and Michael were concerned about the company’s ability to order and maintain the correct inventories to meet the new sales projections or even if many of its suppliers could meet the higher volumes. John and Michael also were concerned about how they would get the materials to Stone Horse Supply Company because they currently used a single company truck to pick up most of the local materials. Finally, John and Michael were deeply concerned about inventory levels and the cash required maintaining those inventories because they were already experiencing excess cost and issues in this area. Having decided to move forward, John and Michael’s company faced many questions regarding the new sales opportunity. Both John and Michael knew that while the technology they had to offer was superior to any other product of that type currently on the market, they also knew their company needed help in developing a supply chain strategy to ensure that this fantastic new sales opportunity did not overwhelm the company and end in failure. Your task starts with assisting John and Michael with an assessment of their current and desired situations. You will follow with assisting Stone Horse Supply Company in developing a supply chain that will support its future operations while also knowing that now that John and Michael’s product is going mainstream that there is great likelihood that other competitors will follow and that any strategy must address the future competitive landscape of the company.

How does the community health nurse recognize bias, stereotypes, and implicit bias within the community?

An important role that the nurse has but is often overlooked is self-reflecting/self-awareness. When the nurse is aware of their own bias and stereotypes it allows them to work on the reason behind why they think in a certain manner. This, then reduces the likelihood of them displaying those biases and stereotypes at work. It is also beneficial for the nurse to be culturally competent especially when it comes to different cultures within the community. Angel Falkner (2018) states, “The nurse should be well informed regarding stereotypes and biases in order to be sensitive to these issues and provide the most unbiased care possible.” As the nurse gains cultural competence it will facilitate the recognition of discrimination based on stereotypes and biases in the healthcare setting.

The nurse can address these concepts to ensure health promotion activities are culturally competent by completing a thorough assessment including questions about the patient’s culture such as their beliefs on health, life, and nature as well as their religion and any health promotion strategies they have (Falkner, 2018). The nurse can also incorporate strategies to reduce cultural dissonance such as the LEARN model. The LEARN model focuses on providing empathy to the patient who feels they have experienced cultural dissonance, explaining your own perception of their situation, comparing the different views and their similarities, recommending a treatment plan, and lastly modifying the treatment plan to meet the patient’s needs and preferences. By adding these two strategies into the work environment the nurse will increase her cultural competency thus reducing discrimination based on stereotypes and biases.

Using 200-300 words APA format with references to support the discussion.

 How does the community health nurse recognize bias, stereotypes, and implicit bias within the community? How should the nurse address these concepts to ensure health promotion activities are culturally competent? Propose strategies that you can employ to reduce cultural dissonance and bias to deliver culturally competent care. Include an evidence-based article that address the cultural issue.

Cigarettes/E-Cigs

 In the mid-1950s, the first study linking cigarette smoking to lung cancer was published. In the decades that followed, many other studies supported this finding and a host of other health-related effects attributed to smoking were uncovered.Over the last few decades, cities and states have created local regulations prohibiting smoking in certain public places. In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was given regulatory authority of all tobacco products.Chapter 20 of your textbook begins with a comparison of two sources of inhalable nicotine: traditional tobacco cigarettes and E-cigarettes. Because E-cigarettes are a relatively new technology, less is known about the long-term effects of the firsthand and secondhand inhalation of vaping products. However, in recent years they have been treated and regulated similarly to traditional cigarettes.

Your assignment for this unit is to create a 10- to 12-slide PowerPoint presentation that covers the following elements:

  • the anatomy and physiology of respiration (e.g., explain how breathing works);
  • the effects of the inhalation of smoke and E-cigarette vapor on gas exchange in the lungs;
  • specific diseases associated with smoking, both pulmonary and cardiovascular; and
  • lastly, based on what you know about E-cigarettes from the reading and your own research, defend or oppose the regulation of vaping products as traditional cigarettes.

You will need to cite and reference at least one article from the CSU Library databases as one of your sources of information.

  • As directed in the tutorial above, pay attention to the background and font colors in your presentation—try to avoid using plain black text on a white background, but also avoid using colors that are visually difficult to see (such as yellow text on a light background) or that are unpleasant (such as red text on a yellow background). Strive for a pleasing, visually appealing appearance.
  • Reminder: The speaker notes should provide the detail and discussion of your presentation, and everything in the presentation should be in your own words, not copied and pasted from a source.As directed in the tutorial above, pay attention to the background and font colors in your presentation—try to avoid using plain black text on a white background, but also avoid using colors that are visually difficult to see (such as yellow text on a light background) or that are unpleasant (such as red text on a yellow background). Deliverable 2- The strategics sale plans

Assignment Content

  1. Competency
    Create a strategic sales plan.

    Student Success Criteria
    View the grading rubric for this deliverable by selecting the “This item is graded with a rubric” link, which is located in the Details & Information pane.

    Scenario
    You are the regional sales manager for International Herb Express (IHE) which is a large, US-based spice & herbs supplier. IHE sells to other businesses that purchase bulk spices and spice blends for use in their end products. The primary customers are baking and soup mix corporations that sell to other businesses, for example, bakeries, restaurants, other food-service, and regional grocery chains. IHE is launching a new spice blend that reflects a more diverse cultural & ethnic flavor profile than IHE’s traditional offerings.
    The abridged marketing strategy for this new spice blend is to target both current customers, but also to reach new customers that are target regions with higher ethnic diversity and/or the more adventurous “foodies” market. The marketing efforts will focus on taste testing, sampling, and on-site promotion. IHE is launching this marketing plan to help create a product offering that is not as commodity-driven (as most spices and herbs are the same quality no matter where they are purchased) and can potentially offer higher profit margins.
    It is important to note that spices and other ingredients are raw goods and traded as commodities. The raw price for these goods changes on a day-to-day basis. Pricing is based on classic supply and demand, though nature is a key contributor to the supply–extreme weather as well as health of crops have a direct impact on the supply chain and access to the raw goods.

    Instructions
    Having recently been promoted to Director of New Business Sales, part of your new responsibilities is to create a presentation for the next sales managers’ meeting. Since you are still relatively new at giving presentations, you want your slides and corresponding notes on the slides to offer enough detail to make you prepared for the open “question and answer” session that will immediately follow your presentation.
    Your presentation will be delivered via PowerPoint slides to highlight main ideas and will utilize the PowerPoint notes feature to include specific details for each slide that will reinforce the communication provided via the slide.
    The PowerPoint presentation should include:

    • Strategic sales plan overview for the new spice blend including:
    • Sales vision statement
    • Sales force’s objectives/goals that compliments the marketing plan
    • Recommended sales tactics to meet the sales objectives
    • Suggested metrics that will evaluate success in meeting objectives
    • Evaluation of the suggested sales plan through the key questions:
    • Who: Target buyer overview
    • What: Key selling features and benefits
    • Why: Highlight comparison to competitive products
    • When: Timing of sales events (ie, launch, promotional periods if you recommend them, etc)
    • Recommended communication style the sales force should use for the product launch with customers
    • Please note any details not noted above can be created by the student, but must be consistent with acceptable and common business scenarios.
