WEEK 5- Discussion 1: Political Representation and Changing U.S. Demographics

Research shows that the demographic makeup of the United States will shift considerably over the next thirty years.  However, the demographic composition of the United States government is not representative of these changes.

For this discussion, review the Paul Taylor’s article The Next America (Links to an external site.), https://www.pewresearch.org/next-america/#Two-Dramas-in-Slow-Motion which presents statistics to show how the gender, racial, ethnic, and age composition of the United States is expected to change over the next few decades. Also review the Pew Research Center’s report America’s Changing Religious Landscape (Links to an external site.).   https://www.pewforum.org/2015/05/12/americas-changing-religious-landscape/ These resources will give you an overview of the demographic composition of the United States and over time.

Next, review Congressional Demographic (Links to an external site.) https://thesocietypages.org/graphicsociology/2012/10/10/congressional-demographics/ (for an audio version click here (Links to an external site.)) and this Washington Post article (Links to an external site.) https://thesocietypages.org/graphicsociology/2012/10/10/congressional-demographics/ to review the demographic composition of the United States Congress.

After reviewing the resources above, address the following:

  • Describe the following:
    • The current racial, gender, and religious composition of the United States.
    • How these demographics are expected to change in coming decades.
    • The racial, gender, and religious composition of the United States Congress.
  • Compare the demographics of the United States population and the United States Congress by summarizing any similarities and/or differences.
  • What are the potential consequences of the demographic composition of Congress not matching the demographic composition of its citizens? In other words, what problems may occur if the makeup of the members of Congress does not match the racial, gender, and religious makeup of the citizens?

For additional assistance with this part of the question, please review the following resources:

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or scholarly resources, and properly cite any references

Using the attached Business Case/Elevator Pitch Exercise complete the following Stakeholder Identification Exercise. Copy and paste the Business Case/Elevator Pitch from Week 2 in the space below (ensure it is single spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font). Fill in each of the quadrants in the chart below for internal and external stakeholders impacted by the project progress and the project results. List eight (8) unique stakeholders per quadrant. Do not repeat stakeholders.

Be specific with your stakeholder identifications

For example, if the project were the repurposing of a fast food restaurant to operate under emergency circumstances (i.e. 2020 Coronavirus pandemic) then you should not just list “Customers” as stakeholders. You would need to identify these more specifically as “Dine-In Customers”, “Drive Through Customers”, Walk-In Customers” and “Delivery Customers”.

Your identified stakeholders need to be specific. For example, listing City Government or Local Government is not specific enough. What department of the city government are you referring too? Is it several? A construction project could include engineering, planning and zoning, public works and even mayor/council. Quality of analysis and critical thought are important in this exercise. If you can breakdown an identified stakeholder group into smaller groups then you have not been specific enough. Be thorough and be specific.

After you have identified the Stakeholders you will create a Communication Management Plan for your project as per Exhibit 6.9 template of  Kloppenborg textbook. You will provide this detailed plan in the section following the Stakeholder chart. Please make sure to include Project management tool

This section of the Problem Set should utilize the Communication matrix as provided in the Kloppenborg textbook. The objective of the course is to provide you with the opportunity to learn and develop skills with project management tools & techniques. However, the Communication Matrix of Exhibit 6.9 deals with the specific communication process for each stakeholder which would be relevant to the request.

r. Vic’s TIPS!

Instructions

Select a country where a specific job will be stationed. You may select from the United Nations’ list of developed economies (Table A, page 169) in World Economic Situation and Prospects [PDF].

If you wish to select a country other than those listed in the UN document, you must request permission from your instructor.

(Dr. Vic: PLEASE get started early on this assignment, this paper will require a strong level of research and also insight in terms of blending many concepts we have discussed in class this quarter).

Make sure the county of choice is logical for the company you are using.

Develop a 6 page cultural information report that will help an employee better understand how to make the transition overseas.

Include the following:

1.  Write an Executive Summary that explains the organizational strategy for expanding company operations to this particular country.

a.  What is the company strategy for working in this country?

b.  What are the expectations of leadership (ROI)?

(Dr. Vic: please concentrate on the “why” and rationale portion of these questions – focus on the company’s purpose for entering a foreign market. Use the company you currently work for or a previous employer – but make sure it is a real company, AND that they do not already operate in the country you have selected. When discussing strategy for expanding focus on the plan to expand – will it be a phased-in move, or will they use an acquisition method (take over an existing company’s presence) or other approach. Also, discuss the expected results [expectations] of leadership with regard to HRM process in the expansion).

2.  Prepare an overview of the critical information an American would need to know to live and work in the selected country.

a.  Language(s) spoken.

b.  Currency, economy, political climate.

c.  Housing, cost of living, transportation.

d.  Health care.

e.  Recreation.

(Dr. Vic’s TIPS, there is a lot to discuss and research here.

  • Language(s) spoken: Disclose the primary language spoken and any dialects your employees might also encounter.
  • Currency, economy, political climate; Discuss what the monetary system is like including currency, discuss also anything pertinent about the economy your employees might need to know [for example are certain shops closed on certain days etc.], and discuss the national and even local political structure.
  • transportation availability, cover available transportation options both locally and across the country. Trains, airports, local busses, taxi service and always provide an emergency transportation medium like a phone number employees can call to have a taxi or other transportation means come to them.
  • housing costs, Cover how housing will be taken care of, for example will there be corporate housing, or will the employee need to find suitable reimbursable housing on their own – sometimes this is a very cost effective strategy for many smaller companies.
  • union influence – if any; provide union contact info, if any, and also union expectations.
  • work week; Here cover the day-to-day and week-to-week work flow for employees, include work day schedule if different than 8a-5p – for example in some countries the work day lasts past 5:00pm and in other countries it ends before 5:00pm. Cover when lunch is typically taken and also when breaks, if any, can be taken.
  • Health Care: Provide information on how health care will be handed – will a different medical insurance plan be needed for these employees? If so, provide information on local health providers – in short make your employees both knowledgeable and comfortable with their health cover as they work abroad.
  • Recreation activities & typical vacation time; here cover vacation expectations especially if it is different than normal – that is, cover if vacation is earned at a different rate – for example if employee will earn vacation hours or credit diffident than normally. Also, discuss if there are any recreation limitations your employees should be aware of due to laws, or cultural. Also offer a trusted vacation travel agent phone number in order to facilitate employee’s safety as they might want to travel.
  • anything specific to the country we would not experience in the US; here try to focus on work customs and laws that might be different than normal in the U.S.  Offer a Hotline phone number employee can call with questions regarding work place expectations.
  • In short, write about day-to-day things like local transportation (the bus or metro system) currency needs, where the local grocery store is located, where the nearest in-network clinic or hospital is located, and who to call if anything happens.

3.  Develop a list of advice on successfully assimilating into the selected country and culture.

a.  Local customs, values, and traditions.

(Dr. Vic: write about any local customs from the region you will sending employees – customs can include language, holidays, traditions of the area, celebrated festivals etc.  Also, write about the actual experience from what to expect on day 1 – though to day-to-day routines, try to be specific here with realistic expectations.

4.  Determine the type of immigration laws or visa requirements needed to work in the selected country.

(Dr. Vic: And, write about the documents your employees might need, visas, passports, copy of birth certificate, government ID, consulate or Embassy documents, and important contact info from the company).

5.  Discuss three ways company leadership can provide human and material resources to support employees in foreign locations.

a.  What will help these employees succeed before, during, and after the transition period?

(Dr. Vic: here are a few tips I have learned from my own experience, 1) try to send employees to their destination country for a week and then have them return, just to give them a few days to become familiar with a few realties of their move. This type of pre-move visit often settles many anxieties employees might have and it gives them an opportunity to create familiarization before they actually move. Also, 2) provide pre-move cultural training as much as possible. And, 3) provide a mentor in the new country – either a local person or an establish employee, please discuss three way of your own or truly expand on the three I have listed.

Overall, treat this assignment as an HR written ‘travel abroad manual’ for a staff level employee.

> Background:
>
> Historically when we talk about the effects of technology upon society, we speak of the golden spike, Kitty Hawk, UNIVAC, the horseless carriage, The Bomb – events somewhat removed from our personal knowledge and experience. But during the 19th century and early 20th century important interactions between technology and society took place closer to home, indeed in the home, at play, and where we work. This technological revolution, transformed our daily lives in a myriad of ways, new ideas led to new inventions, new technologies and to new products and gadgets.
>
> “Everything that can be invented has been invented,” proclaimed Charles Duell, director of the U.S. Patent office, arguing in 1899 for the closure of his department. It seems he was wrong. The U.S. Patent Office is still busy, in fact busier than ever. (There still seems to be plenty of new ideas.)
>
> Assignment: Answer the following two questions. Here is your opportunity to be creative and invent:
>
> Innovation is nothing more than finding a better way to do something. Choose an everyday job that you dislike, but must perform, and be innovative in discovering a new way to accomplish the same task.
> If you had the resources and the time, what innovation, invention (technology) or gadget would you create? Why?
>
> Formatting:
>
> Text Size: All of the text in this assignment needs to be set in 12-point size. Please resist the temptation to mix and match point sizes. If you doubt your applications intentions, just select all of your text and insure that it is in 12-point size.
>
> Double Spacing: For this class select all of your text and set it for double spacing. This includes the name block, title and body of your work. This allows space for marking up or making notes while I am reviewing what you have written.

> Margins: One-inch margins mean one (1”) on all sides. The only text that ends up on the outside of the one-inch margin is the page number.
>
> Name Block: Place the name block in the upper right corner of the page. In this class, the name block only needs to be on the first page. Put your name first, then the class title and then the date. Example:
>
> Your Name
>
> TECH 393 Technology in World Civilization
>
> May 17, 2018
>
> Title: All homework assignments have a title. Please place the title just below the name block. The title for thisassignment is “Project 3”.
>
> Spelling/Grammar Checking: Remember to do your spelling and grammar checking before turning your assignments in. When doing the spelling/grammar checking keep in mind that some words such as mush and must, woods and words, or here and cow, will not be caught by either check. To correct these problems, you will need to proofread your work.
>
> Paragraphs: The first word of the first sentence in a paragraph needs to be indented. At the end of a paragraph, do notinsert an extra blank line. The indentation serves as the visual clue that there is a new paragraph.
>
> Page Numbers: Any homework that has more than one page, needs to have page numbers on it. Please place your page numbers on the bottom of the page. In MS Word, use the footer selection and place the page number in the bottomcenter or bottom right of the page.

Scenario/Summary

Jessie was a typical 2-year-old who liked to try and spread his wings. He would run and fall throughout the house. On several occasions, with minor falls, a bruise would develop on his legs or arms. Jessie’s parent would often worry about being reported for child abuse because of the easy bruising that Jessie experienced.

At three, Jessie would complain that his ankles hurt. This was especially true after a hectic day of running and playing with other kids at the playground. Jessie’s parents wondered if he was simply trying to get attention. Which he usually did being an only child.

When Jessie was four, he accidentally ran into a small tree, hitting his nose. The nose bled excessively. Jessie’s mother tried to stop the bleeding, first with paper towels, which Jessie soaked through quickly, and then with a cold washcloth. Nothing seemed to help. Nervous about the amount of blood that Jessie was losing, his parents rushed him to the emergency room.

The emergency doctor ordered some blood work that included a Prothrombin Time (PT)and a Thromboplastin Time (PTT) test for clotting deficiencies. The site of the venipuncture for the blood draw, also took some time to stop bleeding.

An hour after the blood draw, the physician returned to the ER room to discuss the test results. Jessie’s PT results were normal but his PTT results were abnormal with an extended clotting time. The PTT clotting time was much longer than normal indicating the Jessie may lack of or decreased levels of a clotting factor.

Deliverables

Answer the following questions and save your responses in a Microsoft Word document. Provide a scholarly resource in APA format to support your answers.

  1. Discuss which clotting factors the PT and PTT test evaluate and whether each test measures the intrinsic or the extrinsic pathways.
  2. Describe the common coagulation pathway.
  3. Based on Jessie’s test, which factor deficiency do you believe he has and why?
  4. Jessie’s clotting factor disease is seen more often in males. Please explain why.
  5. If both the PT and the PTT tests were abnormally long, which part of the coagulation pathway would be affected?

Responsibilities of Parents For The Education of Children

Students spend approximately 850 to 1000 hours yearly in school away from home. With these numbers of hours, one would expect that the teachers alone are responsible for their success in education. Fortunately, parents also have a large role in ensuring the kids get the best support possible for learning. Let’s unravel your responsibilities as a parent in the success of your child’s education.

Prepare Them To Be Ready To Learn

Nutrition plays a vital role in preparing the children to stay active for learning. Ensure your children get the necessary nutrients from feeding adequately before heading to school. It’s important that you reduce their screen time, stick to a regular bedtime, and ensure they have enough night’s sleep. Send them off with the best attitude to prepare them ready to learn.

Monitor Their Assignments & Study Time

Aside from keeping tabs on their social skills, it’s the parent’s responsibility to monitor assignments and study time. Children would rather play away the few hours after school all through dinner time. You’re just as responsible for the academic achievement and success of your kid as their teachers.

Follow-up on their assignments and assessments from school and also provide help in necessary areas. Teach your children studying techniques that prevent them from cramming and enable them to understand better. Once you decide to get help from the best dissertation services you should first read writing service reviews to determine whether you can trust them.

Attendance In School Is Mandatory

Unlike a few decades back, attendance is an important part of the academic requirements at all levels of education. Your children’s education progress becomes easy to assess when you’re certain they are always present in school. Try to teach your kids the essence of punctuality at a young age to help them become punctual individuals. Except they show symptoms of sickness, there’s almost no excuse for accepting they stay away from school. Support your children’s education by ensuring they are present and ready to learn.

Let Your Children Fail or Succeed on Their Own

Parents are fond of assisting their kids on assignments, school projects, and research leaving them to do almost nothing. Parental involvement in a child’s education becomes a curse when you have to do everything for them. You deprive your kids of getting higher grades on their own by helping them write their homework.

Allow them to face the consequences of failing, so it prompts them to try harder and study better in subsequent times. Let your kids boast of their success without feeling guilty of your involvement in their assignments and projects.

Teach Self-respect, Discipline, Teamwork & Honesty

Many scholars lack qualities like self-respect, teamwork, discipline, and honesty because their guardians never practice them. Making your kids accountable for their actions helps groom them to become better humans. Teach your kids to be honest to prevent them from cheating during school exams, which have grievous consequences. A disciplined student knows to study and prepare ahead for their continuous assessment and not jeopardize their chances of success. Practicing teamwork with your kids at home helps them value every team member’s importance in group tasks.

Encourage Your Kids & Acknowledge Their Success

Praising your children when they cross milestones on their academic journey helps build their general confidence. Try as much to encourage their academic performance from time to time and give them the support needed to put in more effort.

Kids tend to perform well when parents are their number one support system. Young scholars approach school activities differently when they are reassured of being smart, intelligent, and successful by their parents. Always acknowledge results and celebrate with them when necessary.

Conclusion

Parents are a huge part of the learning activities and academic success of young scholars. Teachers and facilitators are limited when stirring kids in the right direction towards educational success. As their guardian, you have a better chance of reaching your kids and helping them become better students. These are the highlights of your responsibilities as a parent in the overall success of your child’s education. Get to work!
