Solid Waste Management

Discuss the pros and cons of thermal treatment of municipal solid waste. Would a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant be useful for your community’s solid waste? Are you in favor of having a WTE plant near your community? Why, or why not?
ALSO PLEASE REPLY TO ANOTHER STUDENTS COMMENT BELOW

Heather:

Some of the pros of thermal treatment of MSW are disposal of infectious/hazardous materials, energy production and it is an alternative to landfilling the materials. Some cons of thermal treatment are emissions such as dioxin, waste heat, and ash that needs proper disposal. I absolutely believe that a WTE plant would be beneficial in my community if for nothing else but an alternative to the landfill. The electronics recycling company I previously worked for had just begun the process of looking into setting up their own WTE system to produce energy to run the shredder and lower the electricity bill. I no longer work there, so I do not know if they are going to proceed with that, but I hope so. Not only is it a way for the business to save money, but they will no longer have to ship material to other states for WTE and the community can contribute their waste instead of sending it to the landfill. Until about two years ago most of our electricity came from our nuclear power plant. This plant was decommissioned and I’m not sure what has replaced it as far as electricity production.

Building an access control system

As a member of the Information Security team at a small college, you have been made the project manager to install an access control system (ACS) in a dormitory. The ACS will automatically unlock the dormitory doors via an electronic proximity reader and integrate with an existing security camera system. The cameras are designed to face and rotate to record a person as they use their identification card to unlock the door.
Create a 3-4 page project plan for this project in which you:

  1. Include a one-half page project scope statement.
  2. Define five (5) major tasks, each with one to two (1-2) subtasks. Also write a brief description for each task.
  3. Create a Gantt chart illustrating the project tasks (use Microsoft Project or a similar project management program).
  4. Create a system diagram illustrating the equipment and connections required for this project (use Microsoft Visio or a similar software package).

Your assignment must:

  • This course requires use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • Include charts or diagrams created in Excel, Visio, MS Project, or one of their equivalents such as Open Project, Dia, and OpenOffice. The completed diagrams/charts must be imported into the Word document before the paper is submitted.

The specific Course Learning Outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Distinguish between non-functional and functional requirements.
  • Use contemporary CASE tools in process and data modeling.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in systems analysis and development.
  • Write clearly and concisely about Systems Analysis and Development topics using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.

crime data report

Select any city you wish from the links below. The first category/column is the larger Metropolitan Statistical Area that the cities belong to.  You will just be selecting a single city from this group (aka the second column). For the sake of everyone who will pick the proverbial “low hanging fruit” of the Chicago, I am considering that “off limits” as a choice.

Give me the report on 3 years of the most recent crime data as provided by the following Uniform Crime Report (UCR) charts from the FBI website:

2017 Metro Stats: https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2017/crime-in-the-u.s.-2017/tables/table-6

2018 Metro Stats: https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2018/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018/tables/table-6

2019 Metro Stats: https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/tables/table-6

DO NOT simply copy and paste the charts into your report.  Report them as a general narrative. While what want to see are the numbers from the chart (especially in the context of the crime rate/100,000 inhabitants of these areas), you may, and should, report the raw numbers that seem excessively high or low (such as if you area had close to 1000 murders as the Chicago or St. Louis areas do), or if there is an EXTREMELY low number of crime or zero registered crimes in a particular category.  Importantly, I also want to know over this 3-year period if the crime went up or down or stayed stagnant.  For this you should not only report the violent crime and property crime category statistic listed, but also calculate the percentage rise or fall between each of the 3 years. Here is a simple tool for calculating percentage change: https://www.skillsyouneed.com/num/percent-change.html

ALSO IMPORTANT: Not all cities have data reported for all 3 years. Therefore, prior to selecting a city to write on, make sure you have data that comes from the UCR in 2017, 2018, ands 2019

This should be about a page in length and be in a professional style as if it were being read/presented as a press conference on crime in your city. It should be easy to understand to a common citizen while touching on the #’s, rates, and trends for crime over the 3 year period in that community.

AC114M5 Merchandise Accounting

Ethics play a vital role in business and in the accounting profession. Here is an opportunity to connect you current learning about inventory with the profession’s commitment to ethics.

EC5: Tiffany Lyons was just hired as the assistant treasurer of Key West Stores. The company is a specialty chain store with nine retail stores concentrated in one metropolitan area. Among other things, the payment of all invoices is centralized in one of the departments Tiffany will manage. Her primary responsibility is to maintain the company’s high credit rating by paying all bills when due and to take advantage of all cash discounts.

Jay Barnes, the former assistant treasurer who has been promoted to treasurer, is training Tiffany in her new duties. He instructs Tiffany that she is to continue the practice of preparing all checks “net of discount” and dating the checks the last day of the discount period. “But,” Jay continues, “we always hold the checks at least 4 days beyond the discount period before mailing them. That way, we get another 4 days of interest on your money. Most of our creditors need our business and don’t complain. And, if they scream about our missing the discount period, we blame it on the mailroom or the post office. We’ve only lost one discount out of every hundred we take that way. I think everybody does it. By the way, welcome to our team!”

In this activity, you will learn about long term care in general, then calculate what your long care costs might be in the future.  You will also learn about long term care insurance.  Answer all questions in complete sentences using correct grammar and spelling.  You will copy and paste the questions into a Word document, answer the questions, then save and upload the document to this assignment.

Step 1

Go to Nerd Wallet (Links to an external site.) and read about long term care.

1.  What are the two most interesting things you learned from reading the article?

Step 2

Complete Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey (Links to an external site.). Link Below

https://www.genworth.com/aging-and-you/finances/cost-of-care.html

Complete the survey again using a city where you would like to live (other than your current city).

2.  Compare the monthly cost of a private room in a nursing home in both cities.  Summarize your findings in complete sentences, including your thoughts regarding what you learned from completing the survey.

Step 3

Complete Genworth’s LTC Insurance Calculator. (Links to an external site.) Link Below

https://www.genworth.com/products/care-funding/long-term-care-insurance/ltc-insurance-calculator.html

Use State Missouri

You will need to scroll down a bit until you reach “Calculate a Premium for Louisiana”.  This is what you should click to find the survey.

3.  What was your annual premium estimate for a two-year plan, $100 per day?  After looking back at your results from the cost of care survey, do you think this plan will cover all of your long term care expenses?  Why or why not?  Many people will need long term care for more than two years, but as you increase your daily amount and/or length of plan, the cost of the plan also rises.  However, most of you are young and would receive lower premiums.

4.  Do you think long term care insurance is worth it?  Why or why not?  Would you consider buying long term care insurance?
