Developing Measurable Learning Objectives

We will begin the process of developing assessments for an instructional plan using the backward design model. In this model, we begin with the end in mind; therefore, when developing an instructional plan, we begin with the standards that we use to develop measurable learning objectives to ensure alignment. Once that is finalized, educators then create assessments before writing the instructional plans as this will ensure alignment between how we measure learner knowledge with instruction. Assignments in Weeks 1 through 5 will all be used in your Final Paper, so be sure to review your instructor feedback to make any necessary revisions in Week 6.

Prepare

Prior to beginning work on this assignment,

• Review the Weekly Lesson for Week 1 that provides more explicit details on how to create measurable learning objectives.
• Read Chapter 4: Learning Objectives, Assessment and Instruction. Be sure to complete the activity at the end of 4.1 that will help you identify measurable learning objectives.
• Explore the following article about the backward design model (Links to an external site.) Understanding by Design (Links to an external site.).
• Watch the following video about the backward design model (Links to an external site.) Grant Wiggins – Understanding by design (1 of 2 (Links to an external site.)).
• Review the Read the Standards (Links to an external site.) web page.
• Review the  Bloom’s Video (Links to an external site.) and Bloom’s Wheel (Links to an external site.) to help you with writing measurable learning objectives.

Reflect

Consider the following:

• Teaching does not only happen in classrooms. There are many avenues in which you might need to know how to teach and assess learners. Consider what area of teaching you envision yourself. Do you see yourself as a classroom teacher, a corporate or health trainer, a military trainer, for example?
• Consider what type of learners you would be teaching and the content area of interest.

Content Instructions (Due Monday, Day 7)

Complete the following:

• Fill out the Week 1 Developing Learning Objectives Assignment Template (see Weekly Lesson for Week 1 for an exemplar). The Week 1 template is what you will submit to Waypoint.
• Highlight your chosen path that you foresee yourself teaching in (ex. PreK, K through 12, Military Trainer, Corporate Trainer, Health Trainer, etc.)
• Copy and paste a selected standard from the following options:
  • Pre-K standards of your state.
  • Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that are for math and reading (see Read the Standards (Links to an external site.)).
  • K-12 standards of your state if you do not follow the CCSS or if you choose a different content area than math and reading.
  • Standards that are outside the discipline of the public schools (e.g., military, corporate, healthcare, etc.)
• Develop three measurable learning objectives that align to your selected standard.
  • Check out Week 1 Weekly Lesson, which will provide additional support for developing your objectives.
  • Use the Bloom’s Wheel (Links to an external site.) to help you create three learning objectives within three different cognitive (thinking) levels. Be sure to label each objective with the level of thinking from Bloom’s Taxonomy.
  • Select from the verbs in the middle section of the wheel when writing your measurable learning objectives. Having measurable objectives makes writing your assessments so much easier!

Writing and Formatting Expectations

Your Developing Measurable Learning Objectives assignment

• Complete the Week 1 Developing Learning Objectives Assignment Template.
• Must include a separate title page with the following:
  • Title of paper
  • Student’s name
  • Course name and number
  • Instructor’s name
  • Date submitted

• Must complete the one page template (be sure to include the title page).
• Must use proper syntax and mechanics. Your writing should display meticulous comprehension and organization of syntax and mechanics, such as spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Assignment:

Topic: This week you have been introduced to the specific mechanisms (example: A-B toxin) that elicit the symptoms of disease in a host. Pick three of these mechanisms and describe each in a research paper. Please follow the expectations that are listed below.

Assignment Expectations:  

• Length should be 1250-1500 words, not including Title and References pages (typed, 12 point font, double spaced).
• These subheadings are required (content expectation is also provided)
  • Introduction (list the three mechanisms that you have picked and provide a brief overview)
  • Mechanism 1 (Describe the cellular source of the mechanism. Explain how this mechanism produces an effect inside the host. Provide an example pathogen that utilizes this mechanism).
  • Mechanism 2 (Describe the cellular source of the mechanism. Explain how this mechanism produces an effect inside the host. Provide an example pathogen that utilizes this mechanism).

Assignment – Week 10

In the world of counseling, many clients come to their first session either (a) already taking psychopharmaceutical medications for specific disorders previously diagnosed by a psychiatrist or other prescriber, or (b) in need of a psych eval to determine the actual diagnosis and potential psychopharmaceutical options for stabilization. It can be a bit overwhelming when working with clients to know which responses are being influenced by the client’s presenting issues and which responses are being influenced by the medications they are on. Creating a medication reference guide is a learning tool that will provide you with a valuable information about the various medications—in a format that makes sense to you—so you are able to navigate psychopharmaceutical medications within the scope of counseling and integrative, collaborative behavioral healthcare. 

The goal of this reference guide is for you to create a meaningful, easily accessible reference guide—and relevant project—that produces a tool you will be able to use in your internships as you progress toward licensure. While there is required information that you must find for each medication of the reference guide, feel free to let your learning styles shine through, and use your creative side to organize the information by adding color-coded sections, pictures, diagrams, charts, graphs, website resources, articles, videos, or other elements that you would refer to when a client presents with a specific medication or options for medications. This tool is meant to be a living document that you can add to on an ongoing basis, as you learn new information in the field.

Now that you have explored substance use disorders, add the medication information specific to the category of substance use disorders to your Psychopharmaceutical Reference Guide (PRG).

For the category of substance use disorders, the template lists eight medications that are prescribed in this category:

• buprenorphine
• naltrexone
• naloxone
• methadone
• bupropion
• acamprosate
• topiramate
• disulfiram

The template for the PRG lists the required information you will need to enter for each medication.

By Day 7

Submit Part 2 of your Psychopharmaceutical Reference Guide. Now all the categories should be complete:

Part 1 (submitted in Week 6):

1. Antidepressants
2. Mood Stabilizers
3. Anticonvulsants
4. Anxiolytics

Part 2:

1. Antipsychotics
2. Sleep Aids
3. ADHD medications
4. SUD medications (used for substance use disorders)

The template for the PRG lists the required information you will need to enter for each medication. For each category, the template identifies major classes within that category, when applicable. Under each class, you must include at least three commonly prescribed medications within that class. You can include more than three if you would like – remember this is supposed to be a tool you can continue to use as you progress toward licensure.

The assignment requires students to locate a peer-reviewed primary article in the University’s periodical holdings, read it and answer questions about it.

Please use the University’s Library to locate the article “The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard: Advantages of Longhand Over Laptop Note Taking”. It is a primary research article reporting three empirical studies published in the peer-reviewed journal Psychological Science. It was published in 2014 in volume 25.
