Brillaint Answers

The purpose of this assignment is to analyze how businesses interact with their internal and external environments. Students will also apply their knowledge of decision-making models, technology and innovation challenges, management theories, and goal setting.

Write a paper (1,600-1,800 words) in which you address the following based on the information provided in the “West Chester Private School Case Study” resource.

1.  Review how organizations interact with their external environment (as open systems and complex adaptive systems). Evaluate the effectiveness West Chester Private School (WCPS) as an open system at the time of the closure. Additionally, evaluate the effectiveness of WCPS as a complex adaptive system at the time of the closure.

2.  Review the readings provided for this topic on the internal environment of organizations. Evaluate the organizational culture and organizational climate at the time the decision to close two campuses was made.

3.  Evaluate the decision made by Dr. Murphy and Educations Management Services (EMS) in terms of the process of going about the closure. Explain how the behavioral decision-making model was applied in the WCPS’s decision to shut down its campuses.

4.  Provide an explanation, using appropriate management theories, for how the administration could have handled the closure effectively with stakeholders. Include one theory from each of the following: the classical approach, the human relations approach, and the modern management approach.

5.  Provide a suggestion of two goals: one long-term and one short-term goal for the future direction of WCPS. Include a justified rationale of the suggestions.

6.  Concluding statement: Integrate the four functions of management as a means to revamp management at WCPS and meet the recommended goals.

Scenario:

Mrs. Thomas is a 54, year old African American widow, mother and grandmother, who lives with her daughter and four grandchildren (ages 12, 10, 7 and 5) in a 4 story walk up apartment. She is an active member of her church community and friends, comments that she had so much energy that she exhausted all of them just being around her. At age 51, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Busy with raising her grandchildren, a little more than 3 years went by before she sought attention for her symptoms and was diagnosed. Despite aggressive treatments with chemotherapy and radiation, her diseased progressed and she was considering undergoing a bone marrow transplant. Climbing the stairs to the apartment one afternoon she became very short of breath and collapsed. Her twelve, year old granddaughter called 911. At the hospital she was minimally responsive and in severe respiratory distress. She was intubated and transferred to the ICU. A family meeting with the oncology and ICU team was called to discuss Mrs. Thomas’s advanced condition, the fact that she would probably not survive further treatment of the lymphoma and to decide on goals of care. Fifteen family members arrived, including her daughter, pre-teen granddaughters and grandson, three nieces, four nephews, several friends from her church and the minister. On being asked that only the immediate family participate in the meeting, the family and friends became angry and insisted that all of them be involved in this discussion.

Discussion questions:

What is your impression regarding this scenario? What are some concerns you have with this case and what do you anticipate would happen? Support your answer.

Have you thought about what kind of care you would want if you could no longer speak for yourself at the End of Life? Give examples.

How would you handle all the family members and friends wanting to be included in the discussion?

Microeconomics Discussion

This week we shall look at Monopolistic Competition.  This is where you, as a consumer, spend most of your time.  In Monopolistic Competition, there are many companies selling similar but not identical products.  Put differently, the goods are close, but not perfect substitutes.

Because of the relative ease of substitution, companies often compete by advertising, services (for stores), brand names, brand loyalty and product differentiation more than by price.  Thus, prices of competing products tend to be close, but not identical as they are in Perfect Competition.

Since this market is where you – as a consumer – spend most of your time and a lot of your money, this week you are going to look at this market in action in your daily life. When you go shopping this week, pay close attention to product prices and what information they tell you about how the products compete.

A grocery store is a good example.  Look at the soda aisle and by viewing the prices and the product locations on the shelves, which products are close substitutes, sufficiently differentiated that they have brand loyalty (i.e., a higher price), etc.  Do the same with canned vegetables.  Or undertake the same observational experiment in another type of store you regularly frequent.

Assignment Summary:

  1. Watch the video above and under the Week 4 Videos, watch all videos.
  2. Then go to a store, as discussed above, and observe.  Observation is a well-established method of real world research.  It will probably be easier and perhaps more informative if you pick on one product line to observe and observe by brand name. In particular, look for:
    1. product prices,
    2. product packaging (design, colors, logos, etc.); and,
    3. product shelve placement relative to other similar products.
  3. Based on what you observe can you identify:
    1. which products/brand names compete most closely with each other?  Are they placed close to each other on the shelves or far apart?
    2. which products/brand names are aimed at cost conscious consumers?  Where are these on the store shelves for grocery stores?
    3. which are aimed at higher end consumers? Where are these on the store shelves for grocery stores?
    4. which products/brand names have a narrower market and command brand loyalty?  This one could be tricky to figure out.
  4. Share what you find with the class on the discussion board.
    1. What do you think you have learned from this activity?
    2. What have you learned about monopolistic competition?
  5. Post your views to the discussion board and refer to at least two different concepts from this week’s Chapters. Your illustration of concepts MUST include an explanation why you think they are relevant to the week’s topic using specific information from the articles, videos and other research that you have done.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU ADD SOMETHING NEW to the discussion.

  1. Post on three different days for a minimum of three posts. Failure to meet these minimum posting requirements results in point loss
    1. Include a word count on each post. Min. 200

Music: Doctrine of Ethos

Both Plato and Aristotle believed that music should be used in such ways to better oneself, whether it is to build character and promote virtuous behavior (Plato) or by imitating human action for pleasurable or practical ends (Aristotle).

Step One: Watch both of these videos: The Greatest Theater and Music and Creativity in Ancient Greece

Step Two: Do some more research online on Aristotle and Plato’s ideas about music as briefly discussed above.

Step Three: Find a song in which the lyrics portray either or both philosophers’ ideas Step Four: Write a five-paragraph essay on the song you chose.

  1. In the first paragraph:
Provide the musician’s name, title of song, and genre. Provide the URL to a video or website containing the song with its lyrics.
  2. In the second paragraph:
Explain how your song leans more toward a Platonian (Plato) or an Aristotelian (Aristotle) type of song.
  3. In the third through the fifth paragraphs:
Quote specific lyrics from the song to explain how the song inspires one to transform one’s character and behavior to become a better person. You must use part of the lyrics–a minimum of three–to show how the song influences one to become a better person. Each quote must be followed by a full paragraph of detailed explanation. Three quotes; three paragraphs.

3.2 Discussion: Writing Exercise – Literature Review

Getting Started

The focus of this writing exercise remains researching and article analysis. Remember to make good use of the services and resources through OCLS, including a Personalized Search Plan (PSP). The reading for this week focuses on literature reviews. You have likely encountered this component of research in your previous educational pursuits, but the importance and significance of the literature review in a doctoral program should not be underestimated. Locating and becoming acquainted with the body of research that exists on your topic is an essential skill in order to successfully complete this program.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

  • Apply critical thinking in the review of articles.

Background Information

The work of a literature review can inform a scholar’s entire research project. From past scholarship, researchers often derive and refine key concepts, hypotheses, sampling strategies, analytical techniques, solutions to ethical dilemmas, and other helpful ideas and practices.

Despite their wide-ranging impact, literature reviews are often associated with the introductory sections of a journal article—everything after the abstract and before the methodology section—because that is where scholars summarize prior research and explain how their article will add to it. In these introductory sections, much gets accomplished. Researchers expertly distill key points from the dozens or hundreds of prior studies that they have read; they identify competing perspectives, uncover important contradictions or disagreements that need to be resolved, and show the connections (and disconnects) between disparate studies—studies that may have been conducted decades apart by scholars in different disciplines and subfields. (Harris, 2014, p. 38)

wk 6 6220 Discussion Response 1

The cognitive theoretical orientation focuses on cognitive processes and holds that cognitions, or ideas, beliefs, and attitudes, are what influence one’s conduct (Cervone & Pervin,2019). While a social cognitive theoretical orientation believes that one’s cognitions are influenced by one’s environment and social interactions, as well as one’s experiences, which then guide one’s behavior, a social cognitive theoretical orientation believes that one’s cognitions are influenced by one’s experiences (Cervone & Pervin,2019).

Social cognitive theory distinguishes among three modes of agency: direct personal agency; proxy agency that relies on others to act on one’s behest to secure desired outcomes; and collective agency exercised through group action (Bandura,2002). In personal agency exercised individually, people bring their influence to bear directly on themselves and their environment in managing their lives (Bandura,2002). The difference is that a cognitive theoretical orientation focuses primarily on cognitions and believes that they are the dominant forces driving social interaction and behavior, whereas a social cognitive theoretical orientation believes that cognitions are influenced by social interactions and the environment, and that these factors then guide one’s behavior. The similarity is that both place a strong focus on cognitions as a driving force in behavior. Humans are social beings who are influenced by their environment and social interactions, social cognitive theoretical orientation is more comprehensive than cognitive theoretical orientation.

Discussion 500 words – Organizational Behavior

It should be no surprise that organizational culture can have an impact on employee performance and satisfaction. Tell us about the organizational culture at your current or past employer. What type of impact did it have on your performance and satisfaction? In addition to the textbook, utilize at least two outside sources to support your response.

Info below is from textbook with citing info at the end:

a Definition of organizational culture Organizational culture refers to a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organizations.1 Seven primary characteristics seem to capture the essence of an organization’s culture:

1. Innovation and risk taking. The degree to which employees are encouraged to be innovative and take risks.

2. Attention to detail. The degree to which employees are expected to exhibit precision, analysis, and attention to detail.

3. Outcome orientation. The degree to which management focuses on results or outcomes rather than on the techniques and processes used to achieve them.

4. People orientation. The degree to which management decisions take into consideration the effect of outcomes on people within the organization.

5. Team orientation. The degree to which work activities are organized around teams rather than individuals.

6. Aggressiveness. The degree to which people are aggressive and competitive rather than easygoing.

7. Stability. The degree to which organizational activities emphasize maintaining the status quo in contrast to growth.

Each of these characteristics exists on a continuum from low to high. Appraising an organization on the strength of each provides a basis for the shared understanding members have about the organization, how things are done in it, and the way they are supposed to behave.

Assignment:

Watch the film ‘Welcome to the World’ linked above or another film of your choice about child birth in another culture. Answer the following questions:

a. How does poverty effect early child development in this country?

b. What historical, cultural and economic factors that have caused this type of poverty?

c. What would need to happen to structurally reduce poverty in this country?

************************************************

Every year 130 million babies are born.

Their life chances are a lottery depending on where they are born. In Europe, six babies per 1000 will die before their first birthday. In Africa, it’s 82. In America, 1 in 3 will grow up to be obese; in Cambodia, a child is more likely to become malnourished than go to high school. In Sierra Leone, one in eight mothers die in childbirth. Through the stories of mothers and babies around the world, we look at how poverty affects childbirth, childhood – and everything beyond. According to the World Health Organization, 99% of women who die during pregnancy and childbirth are in the developing world. Every minute and a half, a woman dies from pregnancy-related causes and just eight countries account for almost 50% of the world’s maternal deaths every year.

As developmental psychologist we can look at the effects of poverty on lifespan development, it is the greatest factor in predicting many factors related to how a child will develop in terms of health. Yet before we go to far we need to theorize the more basic question: why is there poverty at a point in the human history where we have the resources and technology for every human being to live well?
