Week 2 Recordings

A process recording is a written tool used by field education experience students, field instructors, and faculty to examine the dynamics of social work interactions in time. Process recordings can help in developing and refining interviewing and intervention skills. By conceptualizing and organizing ongoing activities with social work clients, you are able to clarify the purpose of interviews and interventions, identify personal and professional strengths and weaknesses, and improve self-awareness. The process recording is also a useful tool in exploring the interpersonal dynamics and values operating between you and the client system through an analysis of filtering the process used in recording a session.

For this Assignment, you will submit a process recording of your field education experiences specific to this week.

The Assignment: (2–4 pages)

  • Provide a transcript of what happened during your field education experience, including a dialogue of interaction with a client. (EMPATHY AND SELF-OTHER AWARENESS)
  • Explain your interpretation of what occurred in the dialogue, including social work practice or theories, and explain how it might relate to engagement covered this week.
  • Describe your reactions and/or any issues related to your interaction with a client during your field education experience.
  • Explain how you applied social work practice skills when performing the activities during your process recording.

Homework Discussion Post (300 word min)

The Assignment:

Based on cause and effect, explain the relationship between an independent and a dependent variable.

Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.

Tips & Hints:

Please note that it is not sufficient to simply say that one is cause and the other is effect… because a) this just repeats the question, and b) statistics and econometrics does NOT really establish cause and effect!  (So you know what not to say as an answer!)

Be sure to read what the text has to say.  While it is true that one hopes that there is cause and effect, neither statistics nor econometrics can tell you whether a cause will with certainty result in an effect.  (How could simple math establish cause and effect?) So what exactly is the relationship between independent and dependent variables in statistics and econometrics?

It may help you to address this question by pondering an example. (This is intended as a thought experiment, not as something to answer in this question.)  Imagine that you were asked to forecast OLED TV unit sales for 2020.  Your dependent variable would be the number of OLED TVs to be sold next year; your independent variables might be consumer disposable income, the price of OLED TVs to the consumer, and industry capacity.  Does that mean that that industry capacity would cause sales of OLEDs?  Does that mean that consumer disposable income causes sales of OLEDs?  How could these factors suddenly actually cause you or me to run out and buy an OLED TV?  Of course they can’t!

But there is some kind of relationship.  The questions is what kind of relationship?  And that is what this Discussion asks you to consider.

4 – 5 pages book review of the book , “Martin Luther King,Jr.” by John Kirk on the aspect of Vietnam Era

The first paragraph of the paper should contain the author(s) thesis or argument. For some books this is up-front, generally in the introduction or in the conclusion. But for others, the thesis can only be ascertained by reading the entire work. Since I assume everybody will read their chosen work, this should not be a problem. The bulk of the paper will be a chapter-by-chapter summary of the book. In essence, I want you to tell me what the author(s) says, lists, or argues in each chapter of the work. Any material cited (i.e., quoted) from the work must be footnoted and documented. Failure to do so will be judged accordingly and will detract from your grade. For this model when footnoting:

Toward the end of the paper, each student will summarize and analyze the critical reviews of the book and give your own evaluation of the book. Did you like it? If not, why; if so, why? Did the author make his/her points? If not, how? Was the book well organized, or was it jumbled, etc? Questions such as these should be kept in mind as you read. Note: You do not have to like the book or agree with the work’s thesis. It is perfectly fine if you do not, and you can state that in your paper, but you must tell me why you did not like the book. Simply stating that you did not like it will not suffice.

The reviews can be found in historical journals such as the Journal of American History, Journal of Military History, Military History of the West, American Historical Review .

Do not use reviews from publications that are aimed at the general public or librarians.

At the end of the paper, on a separate sheet, add a bibliography of the reviews you consulted for the paper. Use this format to list the reviews, both in the footnotes and the bibliography:

Cultural Relativism and Moral Action

Instructions
For this assignment propose a scenario where you or someone you know are confronted with a moral dilemma relating to cultural diversity and multiculturalism. It cannot be the same as what was covered in the week one discussion.

Cultural diversity refers to religious, sexual, racial, and other forms of social difference. A moral dilemma is a situation in which one must make a decision between two or more options such that the options involve seemingly ethical and/or unethical conduct. Address the following questions:

  • What was the situation? What did the dilemma involve?
  • What would a subjective moral relativist say is the right approach to the dilemma? Why would that kind of relativist say that?
  • What would a cultural relativist say is the right approach to the dilemma? Why would that kind of relativist say that? Is that approach correct?
  • What did you the person confronting the dilemma decide to do? What moral justification did they give? Is that approach morally correct?
  • Was there an objective moral truth (the objectively right thing to do) in this situation? Why or why not?

Remember, the dilemma should be detailed with description and dialogue. Regard the questions as requirements.

Cite the textbook and incorporate outside sources, including citations.

Writing Requirements (APA format)

  • Length: 1.5-2 pages (not including title page or references page)
  • 1-inch margins
  • Double spaced
  • 12-point Times New Roman font
  • Title page
  • References page (minimum of 2 scholarly sources)

    • Identify academic peer-reviewed journal articles relevant to a health care problem or issue and describe the criteria used for the literature search.
  • Competency 2: Apply scholarly information through critical thinking to solve problems in the field of health care.
    • Assess the credibility and relevance of information sources.
    • Summarize what was learned from developing an annotated bibliography.
    • Analyze academic peer-reviewed journal articles using the annotated bibliography organizational format.
  • Competency 4: Write for a specific audience, in appropriate tone and style, in accordance with Capella’s writing standards.
    • Summarize a health care problem or issue and describe a personal interest in it and experience with it.
    • Write clearly and logically, with correct use of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
    • Write following APA style for in-text citations, quotes, and references.

Instructions

Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. At a minimum, be sure to address each point. In addition, you are encouraged to review the performance-level descriptions for each criterion to see how your work will be assessed.

For this assessment, research best practices related to a current health care problem. Your selected problem or issue will be utilized again in Assessment 3. To explore your chosen topic, you should use the first two steps of the Socratic Problem-Solving Approach to aid your critical thinking.

  1. View the Assessment Topic Areas media piece and select one of the health care problems or issues in the media piece to research. Write a brief overview of the selected topic. In your overview:
    • Summarize the health care problem or issue.
    • Describe your interest in the topic.
    • Describe any professional experience you have with this topic.
  2. Identify peer-reviewed articles relevant to health care issue or problem.
    • Conduct a search for scholarly or academic peer-reviewed literature related to the topic and describe the criteria you used to search for articles, including the names of the databases you used. You will select four current scholarly or academic peer-reviewed journal articles published during the past 3–5 years that relate to your topic.
      • You will want to access the applicable Undergraduate Library Research Guide related to your degree (found at the NHS Learner Success Lab) for tips to help you in your search.
    • Use keywords related to the health care problem or issue you are researching to select relevant articles.
  3. Assess the credibility and explain relevance of the information sources you find.
    • Determine if the source is from an academic peer-reviewed journal.
    • Determine if the publication is current.
    • Determine if information in the academic peer-reviewed journal article is still relevant.
  4. Analyze academic peer-reviewed journal articles using the annotated bibliography organizational format. Provide rationale for inclusion of each selected article. The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to document a list of references along with key information about each one. The detail about the reference is the annotation. Developing this annotated bibliography will create a foundation of knowledge about the selected topic. In your annotated bibliography:
    • Identify the purpose of the article.
    • Summarize the information.
    • Provide rationale for inclusion of each article.
    • Include the conclusions and findings of the article.
    • Write your annotated bibliography in a paragraph form. The annotated bibliography should be approximately 150 words (1–3 paragraphs) in length.
    • List the full reference for the source in APA format (author, date, title, publisher, et cetera) and use APA format for the annotated bibliography.
    • Make sure the references are listed in alphabetical order, are double-spaced, and use hanging indents.
  5. Summarize what you have learned from developing an annotated bibliography.
    • Summarize what you learned from your research in a separate paragraph or two at the end of the paper.
    • List the main points you learned from your research.
    • Summarize the main contributions of the sources you chose and how they enhanced your knowledge about the topic.

Example Assessment: You may use the following to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like:

Additional Requirements

Your assessment should also meet the following requirements:

  • Length: 3–5 typed, double-spaced pages, not including the title page and reference page.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

  • References: Use at least four scholarly or academic peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • APA format: Follow current APA guidelines for in-text citation of outside sources in the body of your paper and also on the reference page.

Module 2 Case – Large Group Interventions Questions

First and foremost, remember to go very carefully through all of the required materials before starting this assignment. There are two short articles, plus two in-depth book chapters to go through. There are also some optional readings in the background materials that you can use for your paper. It is important to make sure you understand the ins and outs of Open Space Technology and Future Search before starting on this assignment, so make sure to go through the readings carefully before you start on this paper.

For this assignment, you will be going through four scenarios. For each scenario, cite at least two of the readings from the background readings to support your answer. You need to cite at least four of the readings total for your paper—these can include both required and optional readings listed in the background materials. Your paper should be 4–5 pages in length:

  1. Suppose you win the lottery. Not sure what to do with all of your money, on an impulse you decide to buy a local college as you want to make a positive impact in your community. However, you soon find yourself a bit over your head as all day you have employees or students coming to your office with all kinds of advice, suggestions for changes that should be made, complaints, etc. Never having run a college before, you are a bit confused about how to deal with all of this input and you don’t really have a good idea about what to focus on. The college has about 300 employees and 800 students and wants to find a way to get some more organized input and creative ideas for improving the college. Should you use Open Space Technology, Future Search, or neither? Explain your reasoning and justify your answer using at least two of the readings from the background materials.

2.  A video game company starts out with five undergraduate students living in a dorm but rapidly grows within three years to around 50 employees and $10 million a year in annual revenues. While the company is still expected rapid growth, there is still sharp tension between the very young video game designers and the older and more experienced executives who run the finance and marketing departments. In particular, the younger employees strive to develop new video games that are unique and much different than any other games available. However, the more experienced executives wish to take a more conservative route and come out with games that are similar to popular games produced by their competitors. The five founding partners are not sure which of these two directions to take and wish to receive input from all of their employees through some type of formal process. Should the CEO use Open Space Technology, Future Search, or neither? Explain your reasoning and justify your answer using at least two of the readings from the background materials.

3.  An insurance company has most of its employees in three different departments – sales, accounting, and information technology. The CEO is always receiving input from the sales department, as most of the salesforce is very outgoing and they don’t hesitate to give their opinions or make requests. On the other hand, employees in accounting and information technology tend to be quiet and shy and rarely speak up. The CEO notices that there is considerably higher turnover in the accounting and information technology departments, and thus becomes concerned that perhaps employees in these departments are leaving because they are dissatisfied with decisions the CEO has made or because they feel the salesforce is overly favored. There are about 50 employees in each department. The CEO wishes to find a process by which a wider range of employee input can be obtained. Should the CEO use Open Space Technology, Future Search, or neither? Explain your reasoning and justify your answer using at least two of the readings from the background materials.

4.  A CEO initiates an Open Space Technology conference. At the start of the conference, the CEO provides a list of topics he wants covered and also gives his opinion on what kind of outcomes he wants from the conference. He also makes attendance at the conference mandatory. When the conference starts, participants all volunteer to give sessions on the topics proposed by the CEO. A few participants propose to give sessions on other topics not mentioned by the CEO, but very few employees come to these sessions and instead go to the sessions covering topics suggested by the CEO. At the end of the conference, the CEO is presented with a carefully worded summary of the conference and given conclusions that the CEO wanted to hear. However, after the conference ends and employees go back to work they are very slow at implementing the recommendations from the conference. What do you think went wrong? Which major principles or concepts of Open Space Technology do you think the CEO violated? Explain your reasoning, and cite Leith (1996) and at least one other source on Open Space Technology to support your answer.

Artifacts and Activities Paper Assignment Instructions

Overview

In your Content Competency Development Plan assignment, you identified six performances, essential knowledge, and critical dispositions within the InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards under Standard #4: Content Knowledge and Standard #5: Application of Content in which you feel you, personally, need further development. Taking each identified norm one at a time, you will discuss the artifacts and activities you have consulted to help your development in each norm area. You have identified six areas in need of improvement, therefore, you will complete this assignment six times during your time in this course.

Instructions

1. In written narrative form, name one of the Performance, Essential Knowledge, or Critical Disposition norms you identified in your Content Competency Development Plan as needing further development.

2. Identify and discuss what artifacts, activities, etc. you have completed during this course to demonstrate your development in the respective competency or norm. You must examine at least one artifact (e.g., book, journal article, scholarly work, etc.) within the scope of your paper and engage in at least one activity ( e.g. website, blog, webinar, interview, etc).

3. Discuss the biblical reference identified in your Content Competency Development Plan that aligns with the respective norm. Explore how that biblical reference can be applied in your practice.

4. In your references, be sure to cite the artifact (book, journal article, scholarly work, etc.) and activity (website, blog, webinar, interview, etc.) you identified in your Content Competency Development Plan as the sources to aid development in each respective norm you identified. Also, be sure to include the biblical reference identified in your Content Competency Development Plan that aligns with the respective norm. Include any additional sources used in your discussion for this assignment. Each paragraph is to be a minimum of five sentences totaling to a body of work      that is 1 page in length (the required title page, abstract of 100-120     words, and reference pages do not count toward this length      requirement). This assignment is to      be completed in alignment with current APA standards.
