This week’s environmental controversy focuses on the question: should Immigration into the US be reduced? Review the background information. Then, using the References along with resources from your own research, write a 1-2 page response to the questions that follow. Remember to cite your sources using proper APA format.

Background Information

Legal and illegal immigration into the United States is discussed in your textbook. Advocates of liberal immigration argue that both legal and illegal immigrants are needed to perform difficult and low paying jobs that most citizens won’t take. Advocates also sympathize with immigrants because many of them are fleeing poverty and tyranny in their homelands. Immigrants pay taxes, help to support the US social security system, and contribute to American society.

Opponents of immigration include individuals that want to ban or significantly reduce all immigration, and those that simply want more stringent efforts to end illegal immigration. Opponents argue that current immigration policies and border patrol methods are too lenient and allow terrorists to infiltrate into the US.

Questions

How do the views presented in the articles differ? How does illegal immigration both hurt and help state economies? Do you feel that the author’s of these two articles are ignoring each others side, or is it possible that the Illinois economy is simply better equipped to absorb illegal immigration? Before answering this final question make sure to consider the affiliations of the authors.

A controversial issue, closely related to cloning, that has caused a lot of debate is the use of embryonic stem cells.

A controversial issue, closely related to cloning, that has caused a lot of debate is the use of embryonic stem cells. One possible application of these cells is that they may be able to supply replacement tissues to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, paralysis due to spinal cord injuries, and other degenerative diseases. The word “embryonic”, has caused fierce opposition to this type of research because embryos are destroyed when the stem cells are removed. Questions that have surfaced in this debate include: When a cell nucleus is transferred to another cell, have we created life? Does a stem cell have the same status as a human? What should be done with the embryos that are left over at in vitro fertilization (IVF), clinics? Advocates argue that the medical benefits of stem cell research would be enormous. Opponents argue that life begins at conception and thus this type of research is abortion.

Based on what you have read, explain why you are for or against stem cell research. How would you explain your position to someone who disagrees with you?

In this unit, we are comparing and contrasting changing views of heroism by comparing and contrasting different kinds of soldiers and heroes. Our goal is to understand how our views on what makes a person a hero have changed over time, and to situate these views in their social and political context.

For this section, you want to adopt the position of scholars or anthropologists, attempting to understand an alien society by looking at the people that society considers to be its heroes. Assuming that each holds their hero to be (in at least some sense) an ideal, what does each hero say about the society that each hero comes from?

This essay should have the following sections:

Section 1. In this section, analyze Zadie Smith’s Accidental Hero, Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried and The Man I Killed and Homer’s depictions of Achilles (particularly in Book 1 and 20). For each of these different works, identify what the crucial components of heroism are. What makes each of these people a hero? Are they all heroes? Give evidence from the texts/films in support of your analysis/interpretation.

Section 3. This section consists of 3 reflections, one from each student, that reflects on the following question: does society shape its heroes, do heroes shape a society, or both? How does this happen? For this question, it may be worth thinking back to Plato’s criticisms of poetry and his ensuring censorship (whether or not you agree with him).

Section 1:

  • Section has a brief introduction, stating what the group’s essay will discuss.
  • Closely analyzes the text.
  • Evidence from the text is cited in support of the analysis/interpretation. These citations conform with the rules in the citations tutorial.
  • Content answers the questions posed in the essay prompt.
  • Section 3:
    • Is divided into three subsections of 1-1.5 paragraphs.
    • Each subsection contains the reflection of a single student, that answers the questions listed above for section 3.
    • Each subsection has a heading with the name of the student reflecting.
    • Reflections are full sentence, coherent and focused.
