weekly case analysis

Each student will treat this as an individual assignment. Your response should be well-rounded and analytical and should not just provide a conclusion or an opinion without explaining the reason for the choice. For full credit, you need to use the material from the week’s lectures, text and/or discussions when responding to the questions. Post a case analysis of a listed problem for the week in the corresponding weeks assignment drop box. The case assignments are posted below in the Case Assignments.

The assignment should consist of a Word Document. It should include a summary of the relevant facts, the law, judicial opinion and answer the case questions. All that is necessary for an understanding of the case is important and required.

The report must go beyond the discussion of the problem posed in the textbook, to achieve a superior grade. Do research outside the textbook- this must include research outside the case citation such as the Lexus-Nexis in the DeVry Library or FindLaw.com, do research on the parties and circumstances of the case itself and incorporate some visual modality as a part of the case analysis. Something about one of the parties, as well as some background contained in the legal opinion. Doing significant research outside the textbook is essential.

Utilize the case format below.

“Incentive Pay Programs

  • Analyze the advantages of person-focused and job-based pay plans to determine which would be least preferable for companies in the technology industry. Explain your rationale.
  • Discuss at least (2) two disadvantages associated with team-based incentive pay plans. Provide examples to support your rationale.

Respond to a classmate:

Job-based pay plans identify the job and assign a pay structure for that role.  It would take into consideration experience and education and adjust the pay plan accordingly.

Ideally, it would be good to combine the two.  The knowledge one obtains needs to be transferable to job performance. If I had to choose the least preferable method for a technology company it would be the job-based plan because an employee in a technology company would need to be continually growing in knowledge, skills and competencies.  An degree in IT/IS may not be relevant a few years down the line. Ongoing education is critical to success in that industry.

A couple of disadvantages of the team-based incentive plans would be team members that perform at different levels.  An employee that is highly motivated may take on more than their share of the workload while those that are less motivated may have a tendency to slack off.  This scenario could lead to resentment and a hostile work environment.  This type of incentive plan can also make it difficult to provide counseling and mentoring for individual growth or feedback.

Clients must be assured that all aspects of their communication with any professional regarding themselves or their family members will be held in the strictest confidence. Clients who cannot trust professionals to treat information as confidential may withhold information that is important to investigation, assessment, and treatment. When professionals disregard the privacy of their clients, the clients are injured in obvious and/or subtle ways. A professional code of ethics provides guidance here. Codes of ethics fulfill three major objectives: to educate professionals about sound ethical conduct, to provide a mechanism for professional accountability, and to be a catalyst for improving practice. In this way, they provide a foundation for professional competency and integrity.

In a 1,050- to 1,400-word (or 3- to 4-page) paper (excluding references and title page), discuss how your professional ethics code fulfills these objectives. As ethical issues are also influenced by legislation, discuss how you believe legislation could likewise contribute to the fulfillment of these objectives. Discuss the most significant ways that you believe legislation and ethical codes can affect your future professional practice. To support your ideas, cite one or more landmark court cases from our readings addressing responsible ethical and legal professional practice, and discuss implications for ethical and responsible practice. This paper should reflect an integration of your knowledge of ethical practice, ethical codes, and legislative influences on professional practice. In addition to the required readings, cite at least two scholarly references.

Unit 3 Case Study Accounting

Instructions
Cookie Creations (Chapter 3)

This assignment is a continuation of the Cookie Creations case study from Chapters 1 and 2. You will use the information from the previous chapters and follow the instructions below using the general ledger accounts that you previously created.

Review the case information below and also on p. 3-54 of the textbook. Then, complete action items a–c). This assignment will allow you to practice what you have learned so far.

It is the end of November, and Natalie has been in touch with her grandmother. Natalie’s grandmother asked her how well things went in her first month of business. Natalie, too, would like to know if she has been profitable or not during November. Natalie realizes that in order to determine Cookie Creations’ income, she must first make adjustments.

Natalie puts together the information shown below.

  1. A count reveals that $35 of baking supplies were used during November.
  2. Natalie estimates that all of her baking equipment will have a useful life of 5 years or 60 months. (Assume Natalie decides to record a full month’s worth of depreciation, regardless of when the equipment was obtained by the business.)
  3. Natalie’s grandmother has decided to charge an interest of 6% on the note payable extended on November 16. The loan plus interest is to be repaid in 24 months. (Assume that half a month of interest accrued during November.)
  4. On November 30, a friend of Natalie’s asks her to teach a class at the neighborhood school. Natalie agrees and teaches a group of 35 first-grade students how to make gingerbread cookies. The next day, Natalie prepares an invoice for $300 and leaves it with the school principal. The principal says that he will pass the invoice along to the head office, and it will be paid sometime in December.
  5. Natalie receives a utility bill for $45. The bill is for utilities consumed by Natalie’s business during November is due December 15.

The trial balance from Chapter 2 is presented below.

COOKIE CREATIONS Trial Balance

Using the trial balance from Chapter 2 and based on the new information provided above, complete the tasks below.

  1. Prepare and post the adjusting journal entries.
  2. Prepare an adjusted trial balance.
  3. Using the adjusted trial balance, calculate Cookie Creations’ net income or net loss for the month of November 2019.

Note: Do not prepare an income statement.

Make sure to complete item “a” completely before moving to item “b,” and then move to item “c.” You cannot jump ahead unless you have completed each step sequentially in full.

Submit the Excel document in Blackboard upon completion.

Assignment B

Paper B: a matrix mapping of a key IT-related organizational (or personal) ethical issue concerning privacy and organizational policy designed to correct the ethical issue.

The first step of this assignment is an opportunity to analyze a key IT-related organizational (or personal, if you are not in the job force) ethical issue, related to privacy, subject to relevant laws, regulations, and policies.  Both of the following sites provide sources, and an excellent backdrop for issues relating to privacy protection and the law.

See EPIC Privacy Issues at:  http://epic.org/privacy/  See List on left and/or:  EFF Privacy at https://www.eff.org/issues/privacy  [see list below in center on this page].

This includes sub-topics discussing information privacy, privacy laws, applications and court rulings (case law is usually an extension of the basic law based on the facts from specific cases and real-world court decisions), and key privacy and anonymity issues. While the sites provide many interesting topics, be sure to focus on our class IT topics.

  1. Use the template below and the list of suggested workforce privacy topics from one of the sites above to produce a matrix to map a key organizational ethical (or personal, if not in the job force) issue and how this issue is affected by laws, regulations, and policies.  Use the list of normative ethics below to help you complete the matrix. Choose any three (only three) of the following list of twelve (12) principles of normative ethics described below.
  2. Prepare the Ethical Issue matrix (single-space in the cells) and include the following explanation (200 words) —double-space your narrative—below the matrix:
    1. Why I chose the dilemma;
    2. Why I chose the three principles; and
    3. An analysis of the research used to identify the actions in the matrix.

The completed matrix allows you to weigh the different issues involved and assign a rank as to the importance of the actions based on the effect on the stakeholders.

  1. Indicate appropriate APA in-text and source citations for all sources.  In addition to critical thinking and analysis skills, your assignment should reflect appropriate grammar and spelling, good organization, and proper business-writing style.

Normative Ethics List

Autonomy: is the duty to maximize the individual’s right to make his or her own decisions.

Beneficence: is the duty to do good both individually and for all.

Confidentiality: is the duty to respect privacy of information and action.

Equality: is the duty to view all people as moral equals.

Finality: is the duty to take action that may override the demands of law, religion, and social customs.

Justice: is the duty to treat all fairly, distributing the risks and benefits equally.

Non-maleficence: is the duty to cause no harm, both individually and for all.

Understanding/Tolerance: is the duty to understand and to accept another viewpoint if reason dictates doing so is warranted.

Publicity: is the duty to take actions based on ethical standards that must be known and recognized by all who are involved.

Respect for persons: is the duty to honor others, their rights, and their responsibilities. Showing respect others implies that we do not treat them as a mere means to our end.

Universality: is the duty to take actions that hold for everyone, regardless of time, place, or people involved. This concept is similar to the Categorical Imperative.

Veracity: is the duty to tell the truth.

A sample template for the matrix is shown below.  To reconstruct the sample template, you may use the Table Tool in MS Word or copy and paste this template.

Ethical issue:

Stakeholders

(Principle 1)

(Principle 2)

(Principle 3)

1

2

4

Step 1:  Identify the ethical issue that you want to analyze, as described above. An example might be the falsification of your personal profile in a social networking site.

Step 2: Identify the stakeholders involved. You, someone who reads your personal profile in a social network site, potential employers, etc.  Be sure that each stakeholder category is unique and not similar to another category you use.

Step 3:  Choose any three (only three) of the Normative Ethics principles that might apply to your issue such as autonomy, publicity, and veracity.

Step 4: Identify how the ethical issue affects each stakeholder based on the principles you identified. Put this statement in the matrix next to the stakeholder.

Sample Completed Matrix

Ethical issue: falsifying  your profile on a social networking site

Stakeholders

autonomy

publicity

veracity

1: Yourself

You have the duty to maximize the right to make your own decisions.

You have the duty to take actions based on ethical standards that must be known and recognized by all who are involved.

You have the duty to tell the truth

2: Other users of the networking site

They have the duty to make their own decisions

They make these decisions based on ethical standards that should be recognized by the person falsifying their profile

They assume that the person falsifying the profile has the duty to tell the truth.

3: The social networking site

The autonomy of the site is limited by law (Goldman, 2007)

Users of social networking sites are content publishers, as such the site must take actions based on legal and ethical standards and must notify users of these standards so they are known by all.

As providers of content the site must conform to the laws regarding truth or be held responsible for legal issues as defamation (making harmful false statements about someone else) or copyright infringement. (Goldman, 2007)

The second step of this assignment requires that you write an organizational policy (or personal policy, if you are not in the job force) to correct the IT-related ethical issuethat you had previously described, where you mapped a key organizational or personal issue and identified how the digital ethical issue was affected by relevant laws, regulations, and policies.

The following elements must be addressed:

You may take a look at other policies to see how they are written. While the following site:   https://www.sans.org/information-security-policy/?msc=securityresourceslp – For other possible SANS resources,  go to the home page: https://www.sans.org/ and click on the free resource link which provides credible examples of templates for policies, an Internet search may provide other templates, however there is no need to copy a template for this assignment, as the template should only be utilized to provide guidance regarding the following headings.

Your policy should include appropriate information for the following major headings:

  • Overview of the policy – an Introduction
  • Purpose of the policy – the aim of the policy
  • Scope (roles and responsibilities of stakeholders) – who is involved in policy execution.
  • Policy Points to follow – (Note: you should be aware that a policy only describes “what,” the staff of an organization will do, while a procedure describes “how,”the staff of an organization will accomplish a required action. As a result, this section should only discuss the specific measures, needs, or changes to behavior within the organization in terms of policy points, i.e., what they must do to conform to the policy. Any procedures that are needed to assist in doing the “what,” are usually included by reference later in the policyprocedures should not be included in the policy points).
  • Sanctions/enforcement of policy – what happens in case of non-compliance

This assignment requires a minimum of three external references. Indicate appropriate APA source citations for all sources you use.

In addition to critical thinking and analysis skills, your paper should reflect appropriate grammar and spelling, good organization, and proper business-writing style.

Prepare a 4-6 page, double-spaced paper with your Ethical Matrix and your Organizational or Personal Policy (if not in the job force).

Please submit your Paper B to the LEO Assignments Module as an attached Microsoft Word file. Paper B is due at the end of the fourth week of this course. Include a Cover Page with your Name, the UMGC/Name of the Class, and the Title of the Paper.

RESEARCH AND REFLECTION

  6-8 Pages

watch

and read attached doc

Using all learning available this session including biblical and extra-biblical resources, your own research, and the important chapter 10 material on Human Rights, write a quality 6–8-pg. research & reflection paper. Your paper will be a response to the film, Ghosts of Rwanda, a film revisiting the 1994 genocide committed by Hutu militias against rival Tutsi tribespeople resulting in nearly 500,000–800,000 civilian deaths.

In a world where most students have heard the post-Holocaust mantra “Never Again,” repeatedly trumpeted, pay special attention to the stories and reminiscences of former participants in the event—UN officials from the Sec. General to Peacekeepers on the ground, key presidential and state department officials in Washington, other diplomats from both developed and developing countries, US and other international journalists, and local officials on the ground in Rwanda. One stunning takeaway from this event is a tragic ‘success’: all of the people, states, and institutions involved forged a successful temporary alliance to avoid a policy of humanitarian intervention that might have saved tens of thousands of lives!

Answer the following prompts in any manner you wish, either separately or integrated:

§ How and why did it happen?

§ With so much talk of “Never Again” as well as human rights law criminalizing genocide, how and why did so many good, responsible people, states, and institutions agree to do nothing in the face of mass murder? Does the criminalization of genocide actually matter, or does it create more complication than it resolves?

§ Were some international actors or people more culpable than others?

§ Did the media play a role here as an early warning system, or worse, as an aid to the killing?

§ Does the current international norm known as R2P (the Right to Protect) seems a robust deterrent likely to change the desirability of states for military-based humanitarian intervention?

§ More recently, Yale Holocaust historian Tim Snyder has attempted to explain how so many civilians became complicit in helping Nazis commit mass murder in Eastern Europe. Massive numbers of civilians have been killed in Darfur (beginning in 2003, also referred to as genocide) and the Syrian civil war, with little robust willingness on the part of developed nations to militarily intervene—is there a pattern of conditions or behaviors here that triggers a ‘bystander’ policy for states and international institutions?

§ Finally, why do you think Christian Churches, statesmen, and NGOs were not particularly different than others in their response to the Rwanda crisis? The Jewish and Christian faith traditions have traditionally asked, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”, a rhetorical question signaling our moral responsibility to safeguard the lives of humans as humans. But in cases like these it needs to be asked—why has the organized Church been slow to mobilize? Apart from humanitarian aid assistance, did they mobilize for Darfur and Syria?

The paper must be in current Turabian style with default margins and 12-pt Times New Roman font and submitted in an MS Word document. The paper must include a title page and reference page also in current Turabian format. You must include citations to a sufficient number of appropriate scholarly sources to fully support your assertions and conclusions (which will likely require more than the minimum number of citations); the paper must contain at least 6–8 scholarly sources original to this paper and not including the course textbook.

Necessity

PowerPoint presentation. It is a healthcare manager’s responsibility to first determine the necessary activities to achieve the organization’s goals, followed by dividing the activities on a logical basis into departments that perform the specialized functions, and finally to implement the systems necessary to coordinate and control the activities and individuals who perform the tasks. This is a challenge considering all the variables that must be considered and evaluated—the environment, technology, strategies, processes, and so on. For this PowerPoint presentation, you will:

  • Describe the five organizational parts of an      organization and their significance to organizational design (6 slides)
  • Describe each element of the structural dimension, with      examples, and how it relates to organization design (6 slides)
  • Discuss the relationships of the five organizational      parts of an organization to simple, machine bureaucracy, professional      bureaucracy, divisional, and adhocracy structural configurations (6      Slides)

This PowerPoint® (Microsoft Office) or Impress® (Open Office) presentation should be a minimum of 22 slides, including a title and reference slide, with detailed speaker notes on content slides and recorded audio on the introduction and conclusion slides. Use at least six scholarly sources (texts used in this course and peer-reviewed journal articles) and make certain to review the module’s Signature Assignment Rubric before starting your presentation. This presentation is worth 400 points for quality content and presentation.

Required

Length: 22 slides; answers must thoroughly address the questions in a clear, concise manner

Structure:

Title slide and reference slides in APA style. (4 slides)

Organization design: at least 6 slides

Structural design: at least 6 slides

  Relationships: at least 6 slides

Additionally, because a good presentation has few words on the slides include a script with the verbiage you would say when presenting; script should be a minimum of 50 words per slide.

References: Use the appropriate APA style in-text citations and references for all resources utilized to answer the questions. Include at least six scholarly sources to support your claims. Reference must be within 5 years. Quality content. Check for grammatical errors and spellings.
