Promoting Safety and Quality

In the article “Managing to Improve Quality: The Relationship Between Accreditation Standards, Safety Practices, and Patient Outcomes,” the authors discuss the growing trend by medical insurance companies to eliminate reimbursement for Never Events. As these types of mistakes should be easily preventable, hospitals have developed protocols to lessen or extinguish the occurrence of these events. In addition, The Joint Commission (TJC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have developed core measures to guide health care providers’ efforts in improving patient safety and the quality of care delivered.

Health care organizations have developed strategic agendas to help meet these standards and reduce the incidence of Never Events. Nurses significantly influence the overall quality of health care provided and play a pivotal role in improving patient outcomes.

For this Discussion, you will consider the standards that are in place for nurses and how they can be used to improve quality of care.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the information at the Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services websites on the core measures and standards presented in this week’s Resources.

Consider the nurse’s role in supporting the organization’s strategic agenda as it relates to improving clinical outcomes.

Conduct an Internet search for either a Never Event or a core measure, and select one to address in your post.

By Day 3

Respond to the following:

How has the emphasis on quality of care, patient safety, and clinical care outcomes been impacted by specific standards emanating from TJC and/or CMS? Cite your selected core measure or Never Event in your response.

What is the impact of the nurse’s role in clinical outcomes for the organization?

Discuss nurse-specific challenges in influencing change in quality improvement.

How does this influence the ability of the organization to achieve its strategic agenda?

Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.

Note Initial Post: A 3-paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old).

Assignment 1: Discussion Questions—Culture and International Trade

Culture and politics are important parts of the external environment and vary greatly, not only between, but also within each country… Research the impact of culture and politics on business using your textbook, Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Respond to the following:

  • Why is understanding culture critical for successful international business? Give examples of how understanding culture has been important for an international business.
  • Classify and describe at least four different types of political systems that an international business might encounter. What type of political system might have the greatest potential for imposing adverse political risk on an international business? Compare at least one other system to the one you selected and explain why it has less potential for imposing political risk.

STUDENT RESPONSE:

For one to truly be successful in the international business market, we must understand and be open to the multitude of cultures and subcultures of our clients. It can be quite easy for someone who is fairly new to the international business world to overlook the fact that within a culture, lies many subcultures. According to Wild (2016), “A subculture can differ from the dominant culture in language, race, lifestyle, values, attitudes, or other characteristics” (page 43). Managers would be wise to educate themselves as much as possible on the many cultural factors that they may encounter while conducting business abroad. This will also assist in preventing monumental mistakes such as ethnocentricity. Remaining educated, flexible, and adaptable are all keys to success when dealing with other cultures.

Personal space is a good example of cultural differences. While Americans are most comfortable remaining at arm’s-length and shaking hands, many Europeans and South Americans have no reservations for standing shoulder-to-shoulder and kissing business associates on each cheek as a greeting (Ray, n.d., para. 2). From our textbook, we are given the example of cultural awareness experienced by the German company Haribo (www.haribo.com). The gelatin that was used in their candy was solely pork-based. Therefore, the company had unwillingly alienated subcultures who adhere to strict religious diets such as Muslims and Jews. This had potentially cost them billions of dollars annually. After years of research, the company was able to find success in a bacteria-based compound which complied with the omitted market’s needs (Wild, 2016, p. 41).

One way to reduce risk while conducting international business is understanding the different type of political systems and their subcategories. A democracy is known as the political system where the government is elected directly by the people or their representatives (Wild, 2016, p. 77). There are two relatively popular types of democracy, direct and representative. The political system known as a republic is one that is governed by representatives of the citizen body and are founded on the ideology that sovereignty rest with its people (Munro, 2018, para. 1). Another political system is communism. This is system believes that only through an established Communist Party and socialism can economic and social equality be reached. (Wild, 2016, p. 76). Finally, a dictatorship is a political system where absolute power is held by an individual. The citizens under a dictatorship have no say in the actions of their government and generally lose all basic human rights. Dictators can suddenly seize a country’s foreign assets for themselves as in the case of Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez (Zegart, C.R., 2018, para. 2). Democracies, unlike dictatorships, are structured to preserve stable business environments with laws which are designed to uphold individual’s rights. With this theory, commerce flourishes when the private sector includes autonomously owned firms that seek to bring in profits (Wild, 2016, p. 79).

Psychological Treatment Plan

It is recommended that students review the e-book The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner (Jongsma, Peterson, & Bruce, 2014) for additional assistance in completing this assignment.

Clinical and counseling psychologists utilize treatment plans to document a client’s progress toward short- and long-term goals. The content within psychological treatment plans varies depending on the clinical setting. The clinician’s theoretical orientation, evidenced-based practices, and the client’s needs are taken into account when developing and implementing a treatment plan. Typically, the client’s presenting problem(s), behaviorally defined symptom(s), goals, objectives, and interventions determined by the clinician are included within a treatment plan.

To understand the treatment planning process, students will assume the role of a clinical or counseling psychologist and develop a comprehensive treatment plan based on the same case study utilized for Case study 18: Julia A minimum of five peer-reviewed resources must be used to support the recommendations made within the plan. The Psychological Treatment Plan must include the headings and content outlined below.

Behaviorally Defined Symptoms

Define the client’s presenting problem(s) and provide a diagnostic impression.

Identify how the problem(s) is/are evidenced in the client’s behavior.

List the client’s cognitive and behavioral symptoms.

Long-Term Goal

Generate a long-term treatment goal that represents the desired outcome for the client.

This goal should be broad and does not need to be measureable.

Short-Term Objectives

Generate a minimum of three short-term objectives for attaining the long-term goal.

Each objective should be stated in behaviorally measureable language. Subjective or vague objectives are not acceptable. For example, it should be stated that the objective will be accomplished by a specific date or that a specific symptom will be reduced by a certain percentage.

Interventions

Identify at least one intervention for achieving each of the short-term objectives.

Compare a minimum of three evidence-based theoretical orientations from which appropriate interventions can be selected for the client.

Explain the connection between the theoretical orientation and corresponding intervention selected.

Provide a rationale for the integration of multiple theoretical orientations within this treatment plan.

Identify two to three treatment modalities (e.g., individual, couple, family, group, etc.) that would be appropriate for use with the client.

It is a best practice to include outside providers (e.g., psychiatrists, medical doctors, nutritionists, social workers, holistic practitioners, etc.) in the intervention planning process to build a support network that will assist the client in the achievement of treatment goals.

Evaluation

List the anticipated outcomes of each proposed treatment intervention based on scholarly literature.

Be sure to take into account the individual’s strengths, weaknesses, external stressors, and cultural factors (e.g., gender, age, disability, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, etc.) in the evaluation.

Provide an assessment of the efficacy of evidence-based intervention options.

Ethics

Analyze and describe potential ethical dilemmas that may arise while implementing this treatment plan.

Cite specific ethical principles and any applicable law(s) for resolving the ethical dilemma(s).

NURS-6050-WEEK11 ASSIGNMENT

Assignment: Global Healthcare Comparison Matrix and Narrative Statement

If you talk about a possible poor health outcome, do you believe that outcome will occur? Do you believe eye contact and personal contact should be avoided?

You would have a difficult time practicing as a nurse if you believed these to be true. But they are very real beliefs in some cultures.

Differences in cultural beliefs, subcultures, religion, ethnic customs, dietary customs, language, and a host of other factors contribute to the complex environment that surrounds global healthcare issues. Failure to understand and account for these differences can create a gulf between practitioners and the public they serve.

In this Assignment, you will examine a global health issue and consider the approach to this issue by the United States and by one other country.

To Prepare:

  • Review the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global health agenda and select one global health issue to focus on for this Assignment.
  • Select at least one additional country to compare to the U.S. for this Assignment.
  • Reflect on how the global health issue you selected is approached in the U.S. and in the additional country you selected.
  • Review and download the Global Health Comparison Matrix provided in the Resources.

The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Global Health Comparison Matrix; 1-page Plan for Social Change)

Part 1: Global Health Comparison Matrix

Focusing on the country you selected and the U.S., complete the Global Health Comparison Matrix. Be sure to address the following:

  • Consider the U.S. national/federal health policies that have been adapted for the global health issue you selected from the WHO global health agenda. Compare these policies to the additional country you selected for study.
  • Explain the strengths and weaknesses of each policy.
  • Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the global health issue you selected. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Using the WHO’s Organization’s global health agenda as well as the results of your own research, analyze how each country’s government addresses cost, quality, and access to the global health issue selected.
  • Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the health of the global population. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the role of the nurse in each country.
  • Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. Be specific and provide examples.

Part 2: A Plan for Social Change

Reflect on the global health policy comparison and analysis you conducted in Part 1 of the Assignment and the impact that global health issues may have on the world, the U.S., your community, as well as your practice as a nurse leader.

In a 1-page response, create a plan for social change that incorporates a global perspective or lens into your local practice and role as a nurse leader.

  • Explain how you would advocate for the incorporation of a global perspective or lens into your local practice and role as a nurse leader.
  • Explain how the incorporation of a global perspective or lens might impact your local practice and role as a nurse leader.
  • Explain how the incorporation of a global perspective or lens into your local practice as a nurse leader represents and contributes to social change. Be specific and provide examples

Changing the AIS

Migrating to a new accounting information system is not an easy task. Many firms have struggled with this process, even though our textbook makes the process seem quite straightforward. Recently, IBM recapped some of the lessons learned in migrating to a new accounting information system within the federal government. These lessons can be applied to any accounting information system project. Others have developed their own recommendations for best practices and lessons learned involving implementing accounting information systems. However, in order to appreciate what IBM and others are proposing, we need to apply lessons learned to a real-life situation involving the failure to implement an accounting system properly.

For this assignment, research the Internet or  for information related to a real-life accounting information system failure and best practices, as well as lessons learned from implementing the accounting system. In addition to information that you may find during your research, please use the following IBM article to complete the assignment: (http://www.businessofgovernment.org/article/what-we-know-now-lessons-learned-implementing-federal-financial-systems-projects).

Write a ten to twelve (10-12) page paper in which you:

  1. Identify three to five (3-5) factors that contributed to the accounting information system failure within the business that you have identified. Indicate the impact to the business. Provide support for your rationale.
  2. Assess senior management responsibility for the failure in question. Specify what the senior management could have done differently to avoid the failure. Provide support for your rationale.
  3. Evaluate whether the most significant failure occurred within the system design, implementation, or operational phase of the process. Indicate what the company could have done to avoid the failed outcome. Provide support for your rationale.
  4. Evaluate how implementing best practices would have reduced the chances for failure. Provide support for your rationale.
  5. Based on your research, develop a list of between four (4) and six (6) best practices that organizations should use today to reduce the chances for failure. Provide support for your rationale.
  6. Using the information provided by IBM and others, indicate which of the principles designed to provide insight into effective and efficient strategies on how to best deploy financial management systems, which were outlined within the related article, should serve as an example of what not to do when establishing the foundation for a firm to follow. Your proposed foundation should consist of at least two (2) principles, but no more than six (6). Provide support for your rationale.
  7. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note:Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

building a data warehouse and establishing the foundations for a BI program

Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Knowledge (analytics), information (reporting), and facts (data) form the basis of business intelligence (BI). Although many service organizations (nonprofits) are developing core competencies in one or more of these key areas, it takes a true organization-wide commitment and approach to achieve the benefits of business intelligence and data-driven decision making.

A rapidly-growing service organization (e.g., a nonprofit organization) has hired you as a consultant. Your task is to build a data warehouse and the foundational aspects of its BI program. You have your first meeting with the head of the service organization, and you must discuss the following topics (as well as provide examples to support your explanations):

  • Explain the theoretical framework behind the effort of building a data warehouse and establishing the foundations for a BI program. Make sure your response describes the framework that you found in your research.
  • Explain how the data warehousing process can be a driving force behind the organization’s new BI program.

Your response should be 400–600 words, plus sources, and repeating the questions does not count toward the total word count.

Hyphens

Insert or delete hyphens as needed in the following paragraph:

  • 1 Attending College in New York City can be pretty scary, especially for a small-town girl from Des Moines, Iowa. 2 Since I am studying nursing, I decided to join Scorpions for Smiles, a student-volunteer-group that visits children who spend a-lot of time in the hospital wards for recovery or treatment purposes. 3 It’s a great feeling knowing that a sick or hurting child is benefiting from my time and up-beat attitude. 4 The last time I visited, I brought coloring supplies so that Amy, the eight year old patient I usually spend time with, and I could draw pictures for her family. 5 Amy is a very well known patient; she is always playing practical jokes on the nurses and doctors! 6 When I went visited with my student group this past week, Amy wasn’t there because she had an X-ray scheduled. 7 I left her a note with some crayons so that she could color after the procedure. 8 Next week is her birth-day. 9. I won’t be visiting that day, but when I do, I’ll bring two plain t shirts to decorate with paints and markers. 10 The corner store near my dorm has cake-mix for only ninety nine cents! 11. I’ll bring a cake for Amy and-the-rest of her friends, too!

Step 2 Save and submit your assignment.

When you have completed the assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to your instructor using the dropbox.
