RESPOND IN 400 WORDS

I have heard all my life how men and women should be classified as different species. How we react to things, our perceptions of different events, and how we communicate are just a few differences between men and women. Deborah Tannen hits a few of the major differences in communication styles between men and women. All of them I completely agree with. With her statement,  “Men grow up in a world in which a conversation is often a contest, either to achieve the upper hand or to prevent other people from pushing them around. For many women, however, talking is typically often a way to exchange confirmation and support,” I believe this one is true to an extent. (Tannen, 2016, p. 632) I think men are indirectly taught they have to be the best. I think it is something psychologically taught to them somehow or maybe ingrained in their DNA. That being said, when describing the comments made about having jobs in different cities, the author did not specify whether men or women had made the comments. If it came from a man it could be that they were trying to one-up him, or it could be that that is just how his brain is wired. In my opinion, if you follow the author’s thoughts, then the women were saying it out of support or empathy. Now the husband has the wife thinking that the women were trying to one-up her. It is honestly a bad thing all the way around. I believe it is true that men and women do communicate differently. I also believe it has to change. The author took the first step in pointing out differences. She is very effective by providing detailed examples mostly anyone can relate to. Each example is effective because she shows both the male and female perspective and the why behind it. She concludes the example by showing how we can see the opposing persons’ view. My personal experience has been very close to the car ride example. I could not tell you how many times I have done something similar to just this and gotten the exact response from my boyfriend and we have gotten upset with each other. I literally laughed and then made him read it. We agreed we can work on our communication starting there. I am glad that we had to read this honestly it gave an amazing perspective.

Short fiction Essay 2 Narrowed Topic and Controlling Idea

Once again, you should have chosen your author and story, and now it is time to choose the element that you want to focus on primarily for your second fiction essay. Keep in mind that this does not mean that the element you choose will be the only element that you will cover in your paper; it just means that this chosen narrowed topic is the element that you are going to focus on and discuss more than any of the other elements in the story, and you will only reference other elements when you want to show how they work with this element to express your claim, which you will also establish with this assignment. Therefore, narrowing down to this element also means that this is the element that you are going to put into your thesis and, subsequently, develop your controlling idea in reference to. Most of you are still having trouble with controlling ideas and/or understanding that the narrowed topic and controlling idea are essentially your thesis – they, together, are what comprise your thesis, but that is okay because it is still early in the semester, and that is normal, but you should be getting closer now to being able to establish a thesis with a narrowed topic and a controlling idea within it. (BTW, it should be an element that is in one of the chapters that we have covered since the last essay, out of the chapters on either symbolism, theme, or style, tone, irony. Also, remember that if you are talking about symbolism, you need to distinguish between conventional and literary symbolism, and, if you are talking about irony, you need to distinguish between verbal, dramatic, and situational irony.)  This is an assignment that I like to do early in the semester for that reason, to help you get your mind around the concept of the controlling idea in general and how your element works specifically. Hopefully, we will be able to skip it next time as establishing a thesis out of what you learn during the annotation.:

After you have provided the element that you wish to focus on, write 250 words about how that element is used in the story as a prelude to establishing the controlling idea part of your thesis, just like we have been doing with discussion boards. These 250 words will, hopefully, help lead you to your controlling idea. Ideally, you will develop an idea here by using this as a kind of free writing exercise. After you have written them, you will attempt to synthesize them into an idea. This should be akin to a free-writing exercise except you aren’t talking about the story as a whole but a specific element within the story. After you get done with this exercise, hopefully, you will have brought the idea that you already have about the element you’ve chosen for your narrowed topic closer to being put into words and in that way finishing wording your thesis, which you started wording when you narrowed your topic. For instance, let’s say you chose Tobias Wolff’s use of conventional symbols in his story “That Room.” While you write you may realize that he uses conventional symbols to establish his literary symbols as corrections of typical understandings of conventional symbols, so you create your thesis out of those two things by wording your thesis thusly: “In his story “That Room,” Tobias Wolff enlists conventional symbols as his ammunition to create his literary symbols and in doing so contrasts our typical understanding of those symbols. Writing about the element you have narrowed to should be the primary thing that you do in this assignment, making the element that you have narrowed to the subject of most of your sentences. Here are some pointers:

1. Begin the writing exercise with the words: “In this story the element of ________ is used to ________.” The first blank should be your chosen element; the second blank should be the jumping off point for your 250 words. The next sentence that you write should have the element as your subject for sure. Refer to the example provided below for an illustration of this.

2. Try to make sure it is just one idea, not a lot of different ideas. The best way to do that is to make sure each sentence follows the previous one, meaning that you should get more and more specific each sentence as opposed to jumping back and forth from general to more specific and in that way making point after point after point like you would do in a proper essay.  The first sentence should be a very general and vague notion about the element, and the final sentence should be a more specific sentence about the same idea. Look below for an example of this with a story that we did not read:

In Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge,” the author does interesting things with point of view. In this story, Point of View is used to bring the reader into the character’s mind and feel his dilemma. When the story starts, the point of view is a very objective version of third-person omniscient. By the end of the story, the narrator is using a much more personal third-person limited point of view, which is much more intimate. The reader goes from regarding the protagonist as a nameless soldier being put to death on a bridge to understanding and almost becoming him, a person facing a deep and horrible loss, the loss of his family, dignity, and life. The reader goes from looking at the protagonist through a vague but visually descriptive point of view to careening through the mind of this man via his hopes, dreams, and emotions. In a small way, his loss becomes our loss, his failings our failings, his human frailty our own. We understand everything that brought him to that point on the bridge, his delusion, his false bravado, his disregard for the importance of his family. Furthermore, by switching from one point of view to the next and in effect allowing things to go from unreal to very real, the reader is helped to understand what really happened with the character. At first, he understood war in a very naïve way that didn’t account for the harsh realities of it. At the end, he came to understand them in the most extreme and terrible way. SYNTHESIS: In his short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” Ambrose Bierce uses point of view to show the reader the harsh realities of war.

Notice that my narrowed topic is the subject of nearly every sentence. Also, notice that I provide a tentative thesis statement at the end. You should do this as well.

Week 1 midweek assignment

Due April 30 at 11:59 PM

Recording Observations

Unobtrusively record observations in a public place of your choice for at least thirty minutes or more. The place must have at least ten people to observe. Since you are playing the role of an unobtrusive investigator, you must not disturb the people and must be positioned so that the people will not really take notice of you. You should watch people and focus on behaviors. The behaviors might be ordinary or interesting. You might even choose to look at behaviors related to a theme, such as how people relax or you can look at dyadic interactions. No matter what you choose to observe, you should describe what you witness.

Record the observations in your notebook in a 1- to 2-page Microsoft Word document. The observations should not be conducted with any specific notions or theories.

Type and submit your notes, which should be at least 500 words. Include the date of the observation, the time, and the setting. Along with your observation notes, include five specific study ideas that come to mind because of your observations. For example:

After observing mothers and children in the park, I would like to investigate whether mothers with multiple children allow the children to venture further away from them as compared to mothers with one child.

You must also state hypotheses for at least two of your study ideas. For example, you might hypothesize mothers with only one child will keep their child closer than mothers with multiple children.

Research Essay

Research Paper Topic :  Romeo and Juliet as romance or tragedy

There is plenty of evidence that the play is a romance. Romeo and Juliet fall in love and pine for each other. Both Romeo and Juliet will do whatever it takes to be together. They’re even willing to die for their love. This tragic ending, of course, makes a compelling case that this play is more tragedy than romance. Some believe Romeo and Juliet is more of a romance than a tragedy. Persuade your audience on whether you believe the play is more of romantic story or a tragic story. Use examples from the play to support your answer.

Guidelines:

The topic should be narrow enough that you are able to get to the point where you can speak with some authority on the topic without spending an undue amount of time on the project.

Regardless of whether you’re researching an intriguing topic or following up on an original idea concerning a topic, out of that initial research, you’ll need to come up with an original thesis and support it persuasively both with scholarly sources and argumentation. In other words, a standard formal academic research paper.

Length: The paper must be a minimum of 6 written pages , not including the required Works Cited page. This is a bare minimum. The minimum required length of your essay is whatever is necessary to argue your chosen thesis persuasively. So, be conscientious about the scope of your argument and certainly don’t stop writing at 6 pages if it’s not there yet. There’s no maximum length.

Thesis-driven, persuasive essay: The paper must be a persuasive,[1] thesis-driven essay focused on a narrow topic. In your paper you will take an obvious position which is:

Articulated clearly in your thesis paragraph(s) at the beginning of the paper

Supported by your cited research and textual analysis

Summarized/re-stated persuasively, along with your supporting evidence,  in your concluding paragraph(s) at the end of your paper.

Your thesis should be strong enough that it demands to be supported with argumentation, textual analysis, and research. It should also be narrow enough in focus that you can fully support it within the span of an essay as short as this. If you choose to write a 6-page essay, it would be a costly blunder to choose a thesis that needs a lot more (or a lot fewer) than 5 pages to support persuasively. Outlines, where you plan-out your argument step-by-step, paragraph by paragraph, reference by reference, are extremely useful in making sure you’re neither over- nor under-shooting your intended mark.

Supporting your argument: You will support your argument in two primary ways: (1) a close reading of your chosen play or theory text, and (2) research:

Close reading[2] of your chosen play text: The first way you will offer evidence in support of your thesis is to undertake a close reading of your chosen play or theory text. You won’t be analyzing the entire text, of course, but rather the specific passages that speak directly to the point you’re making.[3] You can do a sustained analysis of a particularly rich passage, or you can make a dozen references to instances of a particular image or theme. One way or the other, you need to analyze and interpret the passages you use, and you should be direct in explaining how they support the point you’re trying to make in the paper.

Research:  You paper needs to show the results of real, substantive, outside research. There is a wealth of articles available online when you access them through the Rutgers Libraries, but depending on your chosen topic, articles may or may not be the most appropriate resource. Between downloading useful journal articles and an afternoon at the library standing at the copy machine with a stack of books, you should have more than enough material.

It is just as useful to do research before you’ve selected your topic, as it is to do research focused on your topic afterwards. The best way is to do both. And in case it needs to be said–whatever articles or online content you reference (be very cautious about using the latter, by the way), it must be from a reputable, peer-reviewed, academic publication. Wikipedia, About.com, CliffNotes etc. are not appropriate sources for this kind of paper.  As a rule of thumb, if you’re in the position where you need to ask about whether a particular source is from a reputable academic publication, in all likelihood you should just find a better source, especially given that it tends to be pretty obvious in most situations. Just keep things simple, and use the library and the library website for your research. And if you’re new to all this, a brief chat with a librarian can make a world of difference. They will very likely be happy to help you.

Writing: The essays will be graded for all writing errors (grammar, syntax, logic/argument structure, essay structure, paragraph structure, easily avoidable citation mistakes, etc.). I’m not going to deduct points for every typo or something like that. Even so, there should be no typos. I’ll also mention that minimum page limit on this essay is low specifically to allow time for revisions, proofreading, etc. The papers are short, but you should take them seriously. They should be tight, clean, and purposive academic essays. Definitely spend a sufficient amount of time with the writing guide I’m distributing with the paper guidelines.

Citation method:  MLA style, including Works Cited page. (For anyone who prefers, or has an interest in learning the Chicago Manual Style, you’re free to use that format instead of MLA. Chicago is widely used in theater studies and humanities research in general. The most obvious difference between Chicago and MLA is that Chicago uses endnotes instead of parenthetical citations within the body of the paper.) If you’re not familiar with either the MLA or Chicago methods of citation,  useful resources are available here: www.easybib.com.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify sources for learning more about specific careers

Directions

  1. Access the CAREERLINK Inventory, add your name, and then click on the “Aptitudes” frog icon to begin the inventory. The CAREERLINK Inventory is designed to match the way you see yourself—your interests, aptitudes, temperaments, physical capacities, preferred working conditions, and desired length of preparation for employment–with available career information from the United States Department of Labor. The information you provide about yourself will produce a career profile showing to what extent your self-identified characteristics and preferences match those considered significant in 80 career clusters.
  2. Your responses to the items contained in this inventory should reflect your honest self-judgments in order to provide you with meaningful career information. If you are unsure about a particular response, please answer as accurately as possible.
  3. When you complete the inventory, review your personalized Career Inventory Results.
  4. Write a 500-word reflection discussing the results of the inventory. Use the considerations below to guide you.

To help you develop your reflections, you may want to consider the following:

  • What were your highest career-area clusters?
  • Review the work performed, worker requirements, sample occupations, related clusters, and response summary (this will make sense to you once you complete the inventory).  Do the results of the inventory surprise you?
  • Do you believe the Careerlink Inventory produced accurate or inaccurate suggestions for you?
  • Did you learn anything new about your career interests?
  • What insights from the inventory results might you apply to your life?
  • Follow your instructor’s directions for submitting this assignment.

need these 3 DIFFERENT PAPERS DONE IN 12 HOURS

Write a Formal LetterWrite a Formal Letter to a Supervisor or Office. See Unit 1, Module 2, p. 36
Imagine that your organization has a generous tuition reimbursement program, but currently employees must take classes outside of regular business hours. You’ve noticed that many classes you want or need at the local university are offered infrequently during evenings or weekends. Address your letter to the correct person or office.
For Additional Guidance:

  • Present a logical case with clear facts.
  • Even though form letters can save money and time, do not use one in this case.

2. Write a Formal Email Write a Formal Email Persuading a Lender to Defer Paying a Student Loan (LO 2-2)Many college graduates today leave school with large debts from student loans. Though the loans must be repaid, the time to do so and the monthly payment are determined by the lender. With a touch economy making it harder to find a job, students may also find it harder to repay loans. Many lenders, however, expect them to start doing so upon graduation. You plan to request a deferral to start paying back your loan.To do so, answer the following questions about your audience:

  • What is at stake for the lender if it defers the loan?
  • What regulating bodies (e.g., state and federal government) govern how a lender may alter the terms of a loan agreement?
  • What objections might a lender raise to deferring the loan?
  • What other resources might the lender suggest tapping in order to repay the loan?
  • What might the lender expect from you as a guarantee that you will repay the loan after the deferral?
  • What channel is the best way to reach the lender?
  • What tone will work best in the message to the lender?
  • How long of a deferral are you requesting?

3. Write a Formal MemoAnnouncing Holiday Diversity (LO 13-1 to LO 13-3)Your organization has traditionally given employees several holidays off: New Year’s; Martin Luther King, Jr., Day; Independence Day; Veterans’ Day; Thanksgiving; and Christmas. Employees who celebrate other holidays (e.g., Good Friday, Yom Kippur, Ramadan, Chinese New Year, the Hindu Holiday Diwali) have been able to take those days off with the consent of their supervisors. But some employees have complained that it is unfair to depend on the goodwill of supervisors. And now a few other employees have complained that people who honor other holidays are getting “extra” days off since they take those days in addition to the standard holidays. Therefore, the executive committee of your organization has decided to allow employees any 10 days off for holidays. They will have to tell their supervisors which days they plan to take off. People will be asked in December which holidays they want to take off in the following year. People can change their minds during the year as long as they have not yet taken off the full 10 holidays. Any religious, ethnic, or cultural holiday is acceptable. (Someone who wants to take off  Cinco de Mayo or Bastille Day can do so.) Vacations, personal days off, and sick days are not affected by this policy. As vice president for human resources, write a memo to all employees, announcing the new policy. Hints: * Pick a business, government, or nonprofit organization that you know something about. * Will the office be “open” every day? If not, do all employees already have keys, or will they need to pick them up so they can get into the office to work days that few other people work?* See www.holidayfestival.com for a list of holidays in various countries.

Dr. Bartelt and class,

Identify the information hub and topic selected. Provide a brief summary of the practice problem:

Unintentional injury is a category within the global burden of diseases that affect millions of people every year. In 2017, 55.9 million people died from a global disease burden (Roser & Ritchie, 2016). Some of the global burden of diseases include cardiovascular disease, cancers, unintentional injuries (falls, fire, and drowning), communicable diseases, respiratory diseases, and diabetes. In particular, falls greatly affect older individuals resulting in increased emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and death among this population. Globally, falls are the second leading cause of death for unintentional injury death resulting in approximately 684,000 fall deaths each year and 37.3 million falls that required medical attention (World Health Organization, 2021).

Compare and contrast national and state levels of data. Use the state of your residence as a basis for the comparison:

On a national level, millions of people aged 65 and over are treated in the emergency department due to falls. Approximately three million people were treated in the emergency room due to a fall, and over 950,000 people were hospitalized for falls costing more than $50 billion in 2015 (Moreland et al., 2018; Florence et al., 2018). The death rate for falls among older adults has increased by 31% from 2007 to 2016 in 30 states and the District of Columbia (Burns & Kakara, 2018).

In South Carolina, 26.8% of older adults age 65 and older had a fall in 2018 compared to 27.5% of adults in the United States (Moreland et al., 2018; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). The age-adjusted fall death rate for individuals 65 and over in South Carolina was 67 deaths per 100,000 in 2018. The total costs of falls in South Carolina were $671 million in 2014 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).

Describe how data from your home state compare to data from other states:

In analyzing the 2014 data for total costs of falls, other states spent a larger amount of money on doctor’s visits, hospitalizations, nursing home care, rehabilitation, and other services compared to South Carolina’s total cost of $671 million. For example, the cost of falls in Florida and California were $3.9 billion and $4.4 billion, respectively (Haddad et al., 2019). While states such as Alaska and North Dakota spending on falls were less than South Carolina, totaling $48 million and $91 million, respectively (Haddad et al., 2019).

Identify one national organization or intervention related to your selected topic that is addressing the burden of this disease. Describe the impact of the organization or intervention to improve outcomes:

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) is an agency under the Health and Human Services division that supports older adults and adults with disabilities by working with community-based organizations to provide health and wellness education to the adults they serve. The ACL is committed to investing in evidence-based fall prevention community-based programs for older adults to implement fall prevention strategies to decrease the incidence of falls. In 2014, the ACL found the National Fall Prevention Resource Center, which provides education on fall prevention and implements evidence-based community fall prevention programs, resulting in a decrease in the incidence of falls among older adults (Kulinski et al., 2017). Some of these community programs include “Stay Safe, Stay Active,” “Tai Chi for Arthritis,” and “Stepping On.”

Share your professional experience related to the topic:

As the designated falls champion nurse on my unit, I worked with other staff members to implement strategies and interventions to decrease the fall rate on my unit. We assessed each patient’s risk for falls. If patients met the criteria, the nurse would place a special armband on them, so everyone was aware that the patient was a high risk for falls. Also, we would place those patients who were very high risk on special low beds. Patients were rounded every hour by either the nurse or nurse tech and constantly educated during every encounter to use the call light before getting out of bed. These, along with other interventions, helped to decrease the fall rates some on the unit.
