Assignment 09.2: Negotiating Contract

HA4070D – Regulatory Environment in Health Care

Assignment 09.2: Negotiating Contract

Directions

Complete the assignment beginning page 492 titled “Exercise: Negotiating a Managed Care Contract” in a one to two page paper. Submit the assignment to your instructor. For a general description of Marcus Welby Hospital see page 369 of the text. The assignment below makes some adaptations to the text to clarify expectations for your paper.

One of Marcus Welby Hospital ‘s (MWH) competitors established a successful IPA-model HMO two years ago. Fearing loss of patients, MWH is forming the Marcus Welby Managed Care Network (the Network). The objective is to sign up a number of physicians, mainly in primary care but also in common specialties, and then to market this network to these two sources: () large employers who provide health insurance to their workers on a self-insured basis; and 2) large regional or national insurance companies (such as Blue Cross) who then offer the network to their customers.

The Network is approaching each physician group individually and asking them to sign up nonexclusively, leaving them free to sign up with other networks or HMOs. The contract excerpts on pages 493 and following contain some common sticking points in these negotiations. Read each pairing of contract options and determine what is at stake. Then, assume the position of lawyer/negotiator for either (a) the Network or (b) a physician group who wants to sign up but is concerned about the details.

• Write in your paper what you would say in a meeting with a representative from the other side and

• Describe how you would hammer out a deal, either adopting one version or the other, or making any changes you want.

• You must therefore be able to write clearly about what the concerns of the other side would be.

• Cite when appropriate.

Case Study #2

Case Study and Questions

Gloria and Lakeisha are coworkers who are assigned to work on a project together. Lakeisha is very organized and wants them to do really well on this project. To help them get started, Lakeisha took some initiative and prepared a list of to-do items along with due dates. She even color-coded the list to indicate which partner will do each item and sends an email to Gloria with the to-do list. Lakeisha wants her partner to know that she’s serious about their success.

Gloria is surprised by Lakeisha’s to-do list and feels a bit uncomfortable because she feels like Lakeisha is micromanaging her. Gloria wants to do her part on the project but is feeling anxious because she doesn’t know where she fits in, and it is making her worried about working on this project. She wonders how she can succeed on this project if Lakeisha is already the leader. When working for a previous employer, Gloria felt anxious about her ability to successfully complete a project and attempted to communicate her feelings with a coworker; however, her coworker didn’t seem to understand Gloria’s concerns and said that she should just ignore her feelings and get the work done.

As Gloria ponders having a conversation with Lakeisha, she starts to feel overwhelmed and thinks it might just be easier to be removed from the project. Using your problem solving and self and social awareness skills and what you have learned about personality traits and emotions, answer the questions below to help Gloria calm her anxiety and find a solution to her problem:

1. From Chapter 3 in the webtext, what are the Big 5 personality traits?

2. Use one of the Big 5 personality traits to describe Gloria’s personality.

3. Chapter 6 in the webtext focused on emotions. Using what you learned, give advice to Gloria on how she can identify and regulate her own emotions so that she can stick with this project, and be successful.

4. If you were in this situation, how confident are you that you could successfully resolve a workplace conflict like the one that Gloria faced? What past experiences or knowledge influence your answer

ACCT 326 Writing Assignment #1

Managing in a global, digital society requires accountants to pay close attention to information. One of the reasons accountants have to pay close attention to information is because management will use the information presented by accountants for making crucial decisions. Finally, accountants must have the correct skills to perform this and other key functions.

Section I (Information Management Today): Roughly 50 years ago, Russell Ackoff wrote about the importance, or lack of importance, of information that management needs in “Ackoff’s Management Information System” (see attachment). After reading the article, you will analyze how each assumption applies or does not apply to our society today. Treat each assumption separately in your analysis. As part of your response, provide a specific example for each assumption.

Section II (Information Management Revisited): After reading the Ackoff article, you will revise each of 5 assumptions to reflect a global, digital society. You will provide a summary (at least four sentences) that describe each revised assumption in detail and how they reflect our global, digital society.

Section III (Framework for Information Management): You will review the CPA Horizons Report and the Competency Framework (see attachment). After reviewing the reports, you will describe how these reports will help accountants to provide their managers with the right information at the right time in the right format.

Section IV (Skills): Take a moment to skim through the World Economic Forum report (see attachment). Pay close attention to the “Pilar III – People” section. After reviewing this report and the Financial Management in the Future report (see attachment) , identify and discuss three skills that accountants are lacking that limits their ability to produce the right information for management and users. NOTE: One of the skills you propose must be one that addresses the advances in technology (see the Financial Management in the Future attachment for a reference to advances in technology).

Section V (Conclusion): Explain how your degree from UMGC and this class will help you to be a better person that ‘embraces the future’  and ‘creates value’ for your firm, based upon the key themes covered in this assignment.

Paper Guidelines

Page Length: Your response should not exceed eight pages (double-spaced) or four pages (single-spaced). No separate Cover Page or Title Page is needed; however, you must include the title of your assignment as a heading on the first page. Note that the reference page and appendix, if provided are excluded from the page count.

References: You will need to include at least four literary references and at least four in-text citations to support your paper. These references must be related directly to the topics covered in the paper. References & citations must be properly formatted as noted below.

Headings: You will need to use headings (short, brief, and centered) to separate each area of your paper. Your headings should have an appropriate title, not something like Section IV.

Margins & Font Sizes: Use standard margins (minimum .5″; maximum 1.5″) and standard font size (minimum 10 point; maximum 12 point) in your paper.

Writing Style: APA7 is the preferred writing style. Please consult the UMGC Effective Writing Center (http://www.umgc.edu/writingcenter/index.cfm) for assistance regarding formatting your paper and references via APA7.

Revision – Summer 2021

3 pages essay between 500-800 words

Q.1) The death of Socrates, to a large extent, occurred because the citizens of ancient Athens’ were unable to distinguish clearly between Socrates and any old sophist; accordingly, a comparison of Socrates to the sophists will help one to avoid making the same mistake as that committed by those early members of the Western world. Why, then, is Socrates often mistaken as a sophist?  In what ways is he different from them? In crafting one’s response, one would do well to consider to what respective ends rhetoric is employed and why; nomadism versus fidelity to Athens; Aristophanes’ portrayal of Socrates in The Clouds; Socrates’ description of himself as a “gadfly”; Socrates’ description of himself as a “midwife”; Socrates’ reason for confessing that he cannot teach knowledge and, accordingly, why he cannot accept payment; the sophists’ reason for charging their students; and relativism and skepticism/cynicism versus absolute knowledge, or Truth.

Q.2) Who are the sophists? One would do well to consider some, if not all, of the following: the historical context surrounding the emergence of sophistry; the nature of the material that the sophists claimed to teach; the definitions of, and the relationship between, rhetoric and relativism, respectively, (including the roles of skepticism, agnosticism, and the logos, as well as Protagoras’ claim that “of all things, man is the measure”); the definitions of, and the

relationship between, physis and nomos (including the tie to relativism, the collapse of the distinction between knowledge and opinion, and, consequently, what becomes of the logos).

Q.3) According to Socrates’ friend, Chaerephon, the sacred Oracle at Delphi claimed that no one was wiser than Socrates of Athens; however, Socrates claims to know only one thing: that he possess no wisdom whatsoever. Nonetheless, what four beliefs does Socrates appear ‘to know,’ or hold to be true? What makes him reasonably certain of these convictions?  Is there anything ironic about his seeming ‘to know’ these things?  One would do well to include consideration of the Socratic method and dialectic vs. dogmatism; Alcibiades’ eulogy of Socrates; Socrates’ attitude in the face of death; and his pronouncement that “the unexamined life is not worth living.”

Q.4) According to Saint Augustine, how is the world ordered, and what does such order suggest about the nature of God? One would do well to consider the following: Plotinus’ notion of the One; emanation versus voluntary, loving creation ex nihilo; The Great Chain of Being; being as intelligibility; the metaphysical status of nothingness.

Q.5) What is the problem of evil in Saint Augustine’s thought? Consider some or all of the following in your response:  both types of evil (natural and moral, which is to say, evil as privation of good/intelligibility and moral evil), the free will and its corruption, spiritual conversion rather than mere ascertainment of knowledge, Augustine’s interpretation of the Fall of Man, Augustine’s notion of babies, the Great Chain of Being as a hierarchy of values; pride; the nature of sin; original sin; loves, both ordered and disordered.

Q.6) Saint Augustine identifies himself as a Neo-Platonist, following in the tradition of Socrates, Plato (and Plotinus); in what way is Augustine’s thought similar to, different from, and a development of or deviation from Socrates and Plato’s philosophy? Feel free to focus on any feature(s) of their respective thought and offer a nuanced comparison and contrast thereon.

Q.7) In what way is Philosophy reactionary? Select one of the two major thinkers that we covered in class and discuss how each thinker’s particular poetic philosophy is a reaction to the culture of his time, as well as to the tradition. One would do well to consider the following: the polytheism of ancient Greece; sophistic influence thereon; Manichaeism; and early Christianity.

Q.8) The history of western philosophy is, as the title of Norman Melchert’s book indicates, a great conversation; in many ways, this great conversation begins with Socrates and his various contemporaries- particularly, the conversation that takes place among them and some of their immediate successors found in late Antiquity. Please trace the trajectory of this conversation as it begins in ‘Socrates’ and moves through Saint Augustine of Hippo. One would do well to consider the precise ways in which each thinker’s claim(s) is somehow

shaped by the thinker(s) that came before him (including, perhaps, the influence of geographic location) and, more broadly, the cohesiveness of the overall conversation.

theory play practice

Directions: You will design 1 play activity for a particular age group and explain the information in an essay format. Each section should meet the approximate paragraph length. First, choose from the age groups below and then complete the steps from Part #1-#4.

  • Birth to 3 years age
  • 3 years to 6 years
  • 6 years to 9 years
  • 9 years to 12 years

Part #1: Play Activity (approximately 3 paragraphs)

Design 1 play activity that will benefit this age group. Include the following:

  • Name of activity
  • Explain how Piaget’s play theory applies to this play activity.
  • Discuss and explain 2 aspects of development (e.g. physical, cognitive or social/emotional) that you believe this play activity will address
  • Select 2 play strategies that you would recommend for this play activity. Each strategy should address a developmental domain (physical, cognitive, or social/emotional development).

Part 2: Research and Modification (approximately 3 paragraphs)

To address part 3, use 3 reputable sources to support your explanations on:

  • Describe how this play activity can be supported in a setting of your choice (e.g. education, hospital, therapy).
  • Explain how this play activity can be implemented within diverse families (e.g. single families, blended families, Polynesian culture, homelessness, deployed parents, etc.). It can be any family circumstance. It does not have to necessarily be a family that was discussed in this course.

Paper examine the influences and effects of computer networks on the world around us

In this assignment, you are to examine the influences and effects of computer networks on the world around us. You can pick almost any area: Social effects (how we talk or interact), Business (how we market, advertise, buy, and sell items), Criminal (how people try to break the law) or Legal (new laws which are needed because of computer networks), or another area. Please pick one area so that you can concentrate on it. If you can’t think of a topic – please let me know.

Pick an article or topic that you can write 5-7 pages on (cover page or references pages DO NOT count). Summarize and describe what the situation before computer networks (you can go back as far as you’d like) and what it is like now (after or during the impact of computer networks). Describe any possible further effects that could still happen (or where you think the area will go or what would be really cool if it happened). THIS IS ABOUT YOUR OPINIONS, NOT JUST A LOT OF REFERENCES ABOUT WHAT OTHERS THINK.

You are to hand in: the paper (of course) and any references that you use (URLs are preferred). If you cannot submit a URL, then a hard copy must be turned in.

NOTE: Term paper rules apply. Quoted material must be footnoted. References are required, but there should only be a few – this is to be your own ideas. You will be graded on the level of detail that you get to in describing the background, the impact and future effects of networks on the subject that you pick. If you have any questions about what constitutes plagiarism, please contact me immediately. You don’t have to have any references, but you should have one or more which back up your history or current disposition of the area. Any questions, please ask!

managerial economics

Problem Set #5

Using shifts in supply and demand curves, describe a change in the industry in which your firm operates. The change may arise from a change in costs, entry/exit of firms, a change in consumer tastes, a change in the Macroeconomy, a change in interest rates, or a change in exchange rates. Label the axes, and state the geographic, product, and time dimensions of the demand and supply curves you are drawing. Explain what happened to industry price and quantity by making specific references to the demand and supply curves. If more than one change occurred, then decompose the change into smaller pieces so that your explanation has a step-by-step character to it. (Hint and warning: Demand and supply curves are used at the industry level, not at the firm level.) Describe how your company could profitably use the analysis.

The assignment is to answer the question provided above in essay form. This is to be in narrative form. Bullet points should not to be used. The paper should be at least 1.5 – 2 pages in length, Times New Roman 12-pt font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins and utilizing at least one outside scholarly or professional source related to organizational behavior. This does not mean blogs or websites. This source should be a published article in a scholarly journal. This source should provide substance and not just be mentioned briefly to fulfill this criteria. The textbook should also be utilized. Do not use quotes. Do not insert excess line spacing. APA formatting and citation should be used.
