RE: Discussion 2 – Week 2

Discussion: Parenting and Substance Abuse

As a social worker, you will meet children and adolescents who are in complicated family situations and may require a variety of resources for support. There are many times when these situations involve drug abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and/or neglect. If these factors are present within a child’s or adolescent’s environment, it will impact their development. As mandated reporters, social workers are legally required to report any suspicion they have of child abuse or neglect to local authorities in an effort to ensure a healthier environment within which they can grow.

For this Discussion, review the case study “Working With Clients With Addictions: The Case of Barbara and Jonah.” Consider this week’s reading in the Learning Resources.

Post by Day 3 an explanation of influences of Barbara’s addiction on Jonah’s future development. Describe an intervention that you would use for Jonah if you were the social worker in this case. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.

This data project will be composed of two parts.

For this project, you will use the  class data posted in the “Shared Data” Discussion containing the Week 1  Ecological Footprint Data Tables.

This data project will address Course Outcomes 1 and 3:

  • interpret quantitative information to determine effects of human  activity on the environment and to evaluate environmentally sustainable  decisions
  • effectively communicate and use scientific evidence regarding human  impact on the environment with emphasize on sustainability and global  citizenship

Description

This data project will be composed of two parts.

In Part I of your report, you will compile class data from the Week 1  Eco Moment on our Ecological Footprints (found in the “Shared Data”  Discussion under Ecological Footprint Data) and summarize/analyze it  with Excel (or similar spreadsheet program).  Discuss what trend(s) you  see in the class data that relate to course concepts.  Think about the  best way to present your findings–tabular or graphical form?  There is  no “right answer” here, as long as you pick a format that highlights  your main findings and support your table(s) and/or graph(s) with clear  text that interpret the results.  Do any of the findings surprise you?   Why or why not?

In Part II, you will research and discuss possible solutions to the  environmental problems reflected in the class data. Here, you will want  to support your argument with reliable, scientific resources (e.g.,  peer-reviewed scientific papers, white papers, and government websites).  Be sure to end with a strong concluding paragraph that summarizes the  main data trend(s), along with the merits and relevance of your chosen  solution(s).

Format

The page limit for your written report for both Part I and Part II is  2 pages, plus 1 page for the data table/graph(s) you use to present  your findings in Part I. The page limit does not include an  optional title page, the reference list, and the appendix with the raw  class data. The report should be double-spaced with one-inch margins all  around and use a 12-pt font.

Here is the order in which to present the various project components:

  1. Part I = describe the class data we collected, include the  methodology, relevant web tool (if applicable), the mean and sample size  for each result, table/graph(s) that depict the main findings and/or  trends; interpret the table/graph(s) for the reader
  2. Part II = summarize research on possible solutions; be sure to  incorporate reliable in-text citations and focus on relevant, attainable  solutions
  3. Reference List
  4. Appendix of Raw Data = screenshot or copy in the Excel table showing all the class data (no analysis or mean)

Acting in a professional and ethical manner is critical for success in your career. Within the field, stories of unbecoming professional conduct or unethical practices by an event planner tend to spread via the grapevine (i.e., word of mouth), but often more rapidly by social media. Therefore, it is paramount that event planners protect their future by adhering to acceptable professional conduct and ethics. This in turn will bolster their careers as successful event planners.

You practiced with ethical practices in Part 2 and professional conduct guidelines in Part 3 of the learning activity. This assignment will give you an opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned as you apply professional standards and ethics to a client problem in the production of an event.

Scenario: Javier is the event coordinator at a prominent hotel in Naples, Florida. The cancellation policy has always stated that any cancellation of an event must be made a minimum 2 and a half months in advance of the event or the client will forfeit any monies paid to the hotel.

Since his hotel experiences hurricanes, they developed a cancellation policy to provide protection for the hotel. The hotel event contract stipulates that a deposit of 70% of the costs of the event space rental, room rental, and catering costs must be submitted upon the signing of a contract with the hotel. There is a hurricane clause in the cancellation policy that stipulates that in the event of a hurricane that does not actually hit Naples, the event will not be cancelled as long as winds remain below 60 miles per hour, and the full deposit and balance of the payment is still due the hotel. If the winds do reach or exceed 60 miles an hour, the deposit amount will be refundable, but a 5% cancellation fee will apply. If the client has paid the 30% balance, that balance is totally refundable.

The European Clockmakers convention put down their 70% deposit with the Naples hotel 8 months ago and paid their balance due 1 month ago. Now Thursday at 5:00 p.m. before their event (U.S. time), Hurricane Willy is bearing down on St. Petersburg (north of Naples) moving west at 55 miles per hour and will be out into the Gulf by Friday afternoon (Saturday at 1:00 a.m. London time). The Clockmakers call Javier on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Naples time (11:00 p.m. Thursday in London) and want to cancel their event. They are scheduled to leave by Saturday at 2:00 p.m. London time, which has them arriving at about 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning in Naples.

Checklist:

  • Define the problem and the contributing factors.
  • Based on the learning activity and the cancellation policy as stipulated above, explain what Javier’s response should be and why, using the professional and ethical practices provided.
  • Show how you figured out the solution to the problem using basic math skills.
  • Who is contractually justified here and why? Provide support for your response.
  • Explain what result would constitute a win-win end result (i.e., where both parties win some) and why.

New technology—and the application of existing technology—only appears in healthcare settings after careful and significant research. The stakes are high, and new clinical systems need to offer evidence of positive impact on outcomes or efficiencies.

Nurse informaticists and healthcare leaders formulate clinical system strategies. As these strategies are often based on technology trends, informaticists and others have then benefited from consulting existing research to inform their thinking.

In this Assignment, you will review existing research focused on the application of clinical systems. After reviewing, you will summarize your findings.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the impact of clinical systems on outcomes and efficiencies within the context of nursing practice and healthcare delivery.
  • Conduct a search for recent (within the last 5 years) research focused on the application of clinical systems. The research should provide evidence to support the use of one type of clinical system to improve outcomes and/or efficiencies, such as “the use of personal health records or portals to support patients newly diagnosed with diabetes.”
  • Identify and select 4 peer-reviewed research articles from your research.
  • For information about annotated bibliographies, visit https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/writingcenter/assignments/annotatedbibliographies

The Assignment: (4-5 pages not including the title and reference page)

In a 4- to 5-page paper, synthesize the peer-reviewed research you reviewed. Format your Assignment as an Annotated Bibliography. Be sure to address the following:

  • Identify the 4 peer-reviewed research articles you reviewed, citing each in APA format.
  • Include an introduction explaining the purpose of the paper.
  • Summarize each study, explaining the improvement to outcomes, efficiencies, and lessons learned from the application of the clinical system each peer-reviewed article described. Be specific and provide examples.
  • In your conclusion, synthesize the findings from the 4 peer-reviewed research articles.
  • Use APA format and include a title page.
  • Use the Safe Assign Drafts to check your match percentage before submitting your work.

Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.

Mid-Term Writing Assignment Instructions:    This is a 2-3 page, typed, double-spaced paper.    Select one (1) Supreme Court case from  the list of cases in “Scenarios from Selected Supreme Court Cases” (see  the attached document). You will analyze this one (1) Supreme Court  case from the perspective of five of the major concepts we have learned  in the first half of the course. These major concepts are:

  1. Living under a government that protects person and property, no exceptions
  2. Living under a government that does not harm person and property
  3. Religion
  4. Personal Liberty
  5. Self-Government

Instead of an introduction, simply  state the name of the case that you will analyze. Then write five  paragraphs, each one devoted to one of the concepts listed above, and in  the order listed above.   Each paragraph must consist of the following five parts, and in this order:

  1. State which side of the case will  promote the concept you are discussing;  if the concept does not apply  to your case, then state that it does not apply.
  2. Explain why this side promotes this concept, or why this concept does not apply to the case.
  3. Provide a primary source quotation  from the textbook that defines the concept you are discussing (this  should not be a quotation describing your case).
  4.  Explain what the quotation says, using your own words.
  5. Re-state which side will promote  this concept (or re-state that it does not apply) and the reason why,  but this time when you re-state the reason why, use part of the  quotation you just used instead of using your own words. (See the sample  paragraph that follows for an example of how to do this part.)

Follow this pattern for all five major paragraphs, and you are done.   Note on citation:  at the end of your quotation, cite the quotation by using the activity  number and letter of the quotation as it appears in the textbook and  place these in quotation marks followed by a period.   Note on plagiarism:  do not present anyone else’s work as your own, and do not write this  paper together with anyone else. If you do so, you may receive a 0 on  the assignment and be reported to the college for violating the student  code of conduct.

Reading response due at 10pm

Take a close look at Farmer’s discussion on the codes of medical practice and documents such as Tavistock, for instance (chapter 8). Notice the gap between rhetoric and practice. Now reflect on how these different practices apply to the rich and the poor (individuals and countries). What does Farmer say is the major issue in global ethics when considering the health of the poor? According to the rhetoric, how are humans classified? How are they (we) classified when considering medical practice in relation to health (and human) needs? Justify your answer.

Note: These discussions and readings are geared to help you gain knowledge, guide and challenge your thoughts about global health issues, so these tasks are not supposed to be “easy” or something you can complete last minute. There is no right or wrong in your answers. However, you must demonstrate that you have done the required readings for each assignment AND gone beyond the readings presenting reading-informed personal reflections. To demonstrate that you have done the readings, you need to always cite your sources in text and use examples from those reading to support your statements with evidence. For instance, if you are discussing a concept presented by Farmer, don’t take it for granted that because everyone reads the same texts, what you are referring to will be “obvious” to everyone else in the class. Instead assume that nothing is “obvious” until you make it so, but properly acknowledging your source. So, going back to our example of Farmer, once you present your statement discussing one of his concepts, ideas and/or examples, you need to cite this author. You can presented in several ways, but here are a couple of examples:
1. According to Farmer, …..[introduce his idea/your position]… [if using a direct quote ALWAYS use “quotation marks” and indicate page number]…. (2005, p.13).
2. Given the evidence [explain what this evidence is]/ Given the concept of “…present the concept…”/ In the example of US inpatients in… [remember to provide enough detail so everyone knows what you are referring to], I believe that…..[here incorporate your personal reflection on the topic]… (Crisp 2010, pp.21-23).

Note: Aim for a well researched, balanced and analytical approach to the information provided in the readings in your discussion posts. Be as clear and informative as possible.
Remember, your main post should be of a minimum 200-word length; your long reply of at least 50 words and your follow-up post does not have a word limit, but it is still a required part of your grading for this assignment. However, grading will be based on the quality of your content rather than quantity of words. The word limit is only a minimum length grading mark.
