ANS Discussion post

Introduction: The ANS is the part of the nervous system that supplies the internal organs and structures, including the blood vessels, stomach, intestine, liver, kidneys, bladder, genitals, lungs, pupils, heart, and sweat, salivary, and digestive glands. Two divisions of ANS (the sympathetic and parasympathetic) have opposite functions. As we learned, the sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for intense physical activity and is often referred to as the fight-or-flight response. The parasympathetic nervous system has almost the exact opposite effect, relaxes the body, and is often referred to as the rest-and-digest response.

For this post, you will:

  1. Choose an organ in the body that has autonomic innervation.
  2. Next, describe how the organ you have chosen is affected by one of the two divisions of the ANS. Is it stimulated? Inhibited? Which part of the organ is affected? Do not do both divisions of the ANS.
  3. Identify the location and neurotransmitters of the preganglionic and postganglionic neurons that innervate the organ you chose from the division (sympathetic or parasympathetic) you chose.
  4. Would your organ be controlled through a gray ramus communicans, splanchnic nerve, cranial nerve, or sacral spinal nerve?
  5. Describe a situation, like a car crash, that increases or decreases the activity of your organ, and explain the effect that situation would have on your organ. Compare that effect to normal basal levels of your organ’s activity. Explain how the change(s) in the activity of the organ of your choice might be perceived, if at all. Other situations could include a job interview, relaxing on a beach, encountering a growling dog while walking outside, jumping out of the way of an oncoming vehicle, getting a massage, feeling unsafe while walking down a dark street at night.

A global agricultural chemical company produces a large variety of chemcials used as pesticides, plant growth regulators, and seed treatment applications. As the company produces chemicals which are put on food, they are very closely regulated by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Each time a change is made to the ingredients or instructions for use (e.g. crops added or changed, major ingredient changed), a revision must be made to packaging. This revision results in a date code revision on

packaging. The date code indicates revision number and date; e.g. 013/01/23/17. Keeping track of current packaging is becoming extremely difficult resulting in a great deal of time going back and forth between subcontractors, warehouses, and procurement. What would you do to alleviate the problem? Mislabeling products can result in huge fines by the government. All packaging is assigned an sku number in the computer system.

Contingency Leadership Theory

Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal. Leaders show the way and influence the behavior of others by their actions and ideas. Leadership failure rates range from 40 percent to 60 percent, costing organizations millions of dollars each year. Researchers have been trying to formulate various theories to figure out what makes great leaders. In my opinion, the contingency theory of leadership most accurately explains effective leadership. According to Manning & Curtis (2018) “. Leadership contingency theory holds that the most appropriate leadership qualities and actions vary from situation to situation. Effectiveness depends on leader, follower, and situational factors” (p.21). As per the contingency theory of leadership, a leader’s effectiveness is contingent on whether or not their leadership style suits a particular situation. According to this theory, an individual can be an effective leader in one circumstance and an ineffective leader in another one. Contingent leaders are flexible in choosing and adapting to succinct strategies to suit change in situation at a particular period in time in the running of the organization. This theory was made popular by Fred Fiedler with his famous Contingency model, which paved way for further contingency theories and models with more details and understanding. According to Fiedler, task-oriented leaders get the best results when faced with strongly favorable or strongly unfavorable situations. Over the years, Contingency theory of leadership has been criticized for falling short in trying to explain why leaders with certain leadership styles are effective in some situations but not others. Contingency theory also fails to adequately explain what should be done about a leader/situation mismatch in the workplace. Contingency theory also fails to explain how leaders can change their behavior or style depending upon the situation or features of the group.
