NURS 6052 Evidence-Based (1page discussion)

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
  • Review the materials offering guidance on using databases, performing keyword searches, and developing PICO(T) questions provided in the Resources.
  • Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least two different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest. You should not be using systematic reviews for this assignment, select original research articles.
  • Review the Resources for guidance and develop a PICO(T) question of interest to you for further study. It is suggested that an Intervention-type PICOT question be developed as these seem to work best for this course.

By Day 3 of Week 4

Post a brief description of your clinical issue of interest. This clinical issue will remain the same for the entire course and will be the basis for the development of your PICOT question. Describe your search results in terms of the number of articles returned on original research and how this changed as you added search terms using your Boolean operators. Finally, explain strategies you might make to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question. Be specific and provide examples.

Company Description & Evaluation Instructions

Instructions

Part I: Your Organization

Write a brief (150-200 words) summary about the organization you plan to focus on throughout the course. What service/product is sold to whom and for what?

Then, describe the following aspects of your chosen organization:

1. Problem-Solving Process
Think of a recent issue that you have been made aware of. Detail how that problem was solved using the problem-solving model steps detailed in the text:

1. Identify the problem(s).
2. Understand the problem’s unique characteristics.
3. Define solution requirements – be specific about company policies in place.
4. Identify possible solutions.
5. Select the best solution.
6. Implement the best solution.
7. Observe and evaluate the solution’s impact.

2. Culture
Describe the culture in your organization. How does this culture contribute to the customer service provided to customers?

3. Customer Base
Describe your customer. What are their consumption practices? Payment practices? What are their expectations? How does your company support differences in consumers?

4. Empowerment
How are employees empowered at your organization? Examples of empowerment? How are customers empowered?

5. Co-Production
Describe the existence of co-production practices in your business. Does it depend on the situation? Provide an example of its use/non-use.

6. Negotiation
Are there procedures in effect that allow for negotiation?

Part II: Evaluate

Evaluate the effectiveness of each point described above.

  1. How does your problem-solving process and your systems of empowerment relate to your customer base?
  2. How would you describe the relationship representatives of your company have with your customers? Why?

The paper should be 1-2 pages in length, double spaced with a font size not larger than 12 point, New Times Roman. Correct APA formatting is required, including proper references and in-text citations.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uses the social vulnerability index (SVI) to evaluate the impact of disasters on communities, weighting the damage with social factors in the states of South Dakota and Indiana (CDC, 2018a; CDC 2018b).X

Each community requires independent evaluation to identify the vulnerability of the area. Two of the contributing factors for this analysis are minority status and language limitations. The data may lack credibility due to the fear of reprisal for persons that fall into these categories. Exploring the social and physical characteristics, excluding these metrics can provide insight on the overall impact on the SVI.

Question 1: What impact does the exclusion of the metrics that represent minorities and language limited individuals have on the predictability of the CDC’s SVI, based on the 2018 data (CDC, 2018a; CDC, 2018b)?

Question 2: Does the CDC’s SVI have key characteristics that impact the preclude potential exclusion without limiting the overall predictability of the SVI, based on the 2018 data (CDC, 2018a; CDC, 2018b)?

Fun home prep #4

For this prep, I expect that you will focus on Chapter Seven and provide one or more DETAILED references to some relevant and specific scene or panel. So please don’t spend much time (if any) on examples of “Silence” or “Anti-heros” from the previous chapters.

If you wish to refer to some other texts, that’s fine! But keep Fun Home as the primary focus.

=OPTION A: “YOUR SILENCE WILL NOT PROTECT YOU”: One of the most pressing issues in contemporary culture is that of being “silent” or “silenced.” What are some situations in which being “silent” develops into a complex ethical dilemma? Please refer to the choices of two or more people from Fun Home. How and why do they remain “silent” at certain key moments? What, if anything, do they reveal about their silence, how do they reveal it, and what conflicts arise from such revelations? Please make sure to specific scenes or statements from the book. HINTS: Google the words “Your silence will not protect you” and/or the phrase “SILENCE=DEATH.”

=OPTION B: “THE ANTI-HERO’S JOURNEY”: In our readings, the main person or character often is not the classic “hero/heroine” that one might expect. What might we expect from a classic “hero”—and how does an “anti-hero” somehow fail to meet those expectations? In what ways can the failure to meet such expectations make a character even more compelling or complex or sympathetic? (Make sure to note the meaning of this phrase in Chapter 7!!) And please make sure not to just assume how Alison is reacting as she learns of her father’s secrets and failings. What does she actually write/draw about these discoveries.

Please write a post of at least 250 words about ONE of these OPTIONS. Please make sure to refer to specific scenes. It is worth 4 points. DUE DATE: By midnight  on Wednesday, June 2nd.

PSY 5101 Week 4 – Assignment: Locate Research

PSY-5101 V4: Foundations for Graduate Study in Psychology (4846699035)

Skills Builder 4.1: Understanding Information Literacy

Review the Northcentral Information Literacy Tutorial, located under your weekly resources, to become familiar with information literacy, and to test your information literacy skills. Keep notes on the important points you discover there; these will be useful both in preparing assignments in this course, and in your other coursework at Northcentral.

Skills Builder 4.2: Effective Searching

In this activity, you will begin to develop your online library search skills that will enable you to tap into the rich resources in the Northcentral Library. The Library’s collection includes extensive holdings in scholarly articles and book chapters–all the information you will need to do your coursework and research. While it may take some practice to get used to conducting online library searches, you will find that the results you get far surpass anything you could get from just searching the internet. Library resources tend to be more authoritative, current, reliable, and accurate than resources gleaned from an Internet search. With Library searches, you can set your search options to find full text articles (not just abstracts or summaries), limit your search to a certain timeframe, and with some databases you have the option of setting up a personal account where you may permanently save resources and searches for future sessions. You can also create an online database using RefWorks to store your research materials. For more information on RefWorks, view the Student Orientation page in the Library.

Therefore, carefully complete the tutorials, follow the directions for searching, and think positive thoughts! Start with the Northcentral Search like an Expert tutorial to learn out how to get started with Library searching.

Skills Builder 4.3: Selecting a Topic

It is time to determine the topic related to the profession of psychology that you might want to pursue for this assignment. You can find some ideas for topics here:

  • American Psychological Association
  • NCU Library – Psychology database resources

Additionally, you may want to view the library tutorials on finding a research topic and preparing to search.

Note: You will use the sources here for the Signature Assignment. So, please select a topic in which you are interested; or one that relates to why you chose to pursue your degree; or one that relates to your professional “passion.”

Some example topics include eyewitness testimony, competency evaluation, psychopathy, risk assessment, treatment in correctional facilities, or the development of juvenile delinquency.

Assignment

For this assignment, you will perform a search for resources published within the last 3-5 years (if available) in your chosen topic area of interest related to psychology. Be sure to start at the databases or Find an Article page in the Library for the scholarly articles and the Find a Book page for a book. Locate three peer-reviewed journal articles, one book, and one scholarly resource (website or other resource). Begin by creating a table (a general example has been provided below), and then list the resources you find. You can use a Word table, and then include it with the write-up described below so that you will submit one document to complete this assignment.

The columns of the chart are as follows:

  • Column 1: Generate an appropriate citation (APA form) for the resource (article, book, other) you discovered in the library.
  • Column 2:  Provide the name of the database you used and briefly describe the subject content, resource types, etc.
  • Column 3: List the keywords you used in your search.
  • Column 4: List any search limiters such as full text, date, peer-reviewed, etc. that you used.
  • Column 5: Provide a note about issues that arose and how you can improve your searching skills.
  • Identify a researcher conducting research in your area and questions you would ask him or her about his/her research based on what you have read about his/her work. The primary author’s contact information is often at the bottom of the first page of an article. Researchers love to talk about their research and answer questions. You are not required to contact the researcher, but should prepare the questions as though you might.
  • Identify and set up a tool for managing the resources you collect from our Library or other sources. This might be OneNote, RefWorks, or a database you develop for yourself in MS Access, MS Excel, or a similar took (i.e.; setting up folders in DropBox). Explain why you made your selection, and then briefly explain how you set it up and how you plan to use it in conjunction with your use of scholarly sources.
  • Reach out with a question to the NCU Librarian. Explain your question and the answer you received and how that facilitated your use of the NCU Library.

Length: 2-3 pages (the chart on one page and 1-2 pages for the conclusion)

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

Module 1 Discussion/ Science of cooking

For this discussion question, pick out one of your favorite pre-packaged foods and take a picture of the nutrition label and ingredient list. You may also be able to find these online.
In your post, tell us first why this is one of your favorite foods (Is it convenience? Comfort food? Your secret vice?). Then, detail ONE of the following for your classmates:

1. List any pure elements that are found in the food. Check this against a periodic table to ensure that you are correctly identifying these.

2. Identify any ionic compounds that are found in the food. Remember that these will typically be salts of some kind, but may not be immediately obvious from the name. As an example, remember that monosodium glutamate (NaC5H8O4N) is an example of an ionic compound from your module. (If you have started Activity 1, this will help you with this).

3. Identify any vitamins that are present in the food. Provide your classmates with the chemical formula for those vitamins (or even the structure if you find it online). Do those vitamins have names other than just the letter “Vitamin __”?

4. Were there any ingredients that you couldn’t identify or recognize? Do a quick Internet search and provide your classmates with some information about that ingredient. Be sure to cite your source!

In your responses to your classmates, pick ONE of the above questions that he or she didn’t answer in the original post and answer it for him/her.

Urinary incontinence response

Urinary incontinence (UI) was a highly prevalent condition that increased with age and stress UI was the most common, dominant in late adulthood and the most understood (Minassian et al, 2017). The urethral support was responsible for continence which was located at the bladder neck and proximal urethra. The primary support of the bladder neck was an intact vaginal wall at the base of the bladder. The fibrous and muscular attachments to the pelvic side wall, the vagina was shown to act as a hammock to support the bladder neck which maintained continence. Stress UI was mainly the result of connective tissue laxity in the vagina and its supporting ligaments. The role of the suspensory ligaments was to support the proximal vagina and mid-urethra to maintain continence. Several etiological theories of UI suggested neurogenic, epithelial and myogenic involvement. A commonly accepted UI theory was the loss of inhibitory control by the central nervous system. In the micturition center in the brain that maintains continence, it was a disruption of the communication response by which it suppressed the urge to urinate. The epithelial hypersensitivity theory proposed the presence of chemo sensitizing agents which lead to bladder instability that existed in adult women with a history of childhood voiding dysfunction. The myogenic theory suggested that the pelvic floor might sustain a physical strain during developmental years in which the pelvic floor failed. The failure was due to birth injury, genetics, environmental factors that resulted in the loss of the ability to support the urethral continence mechanism during an urgency episode. Other UI proposed theories was influenced by psychosocial disturbances, inflammatory, and drug-induced conditions. The key feature in most bladder control conditions was urine loss which was difficult to accurately distinguish between different subtypes, especially when UI was severe (Minassian et al., 2017).

The etiology of urinary incontinence (UI) was multifactorial. The etiology of UI required a well-defined understanding of the mediators and modifiers of disease onset and progression. The primary associated risk factors included increased age, ethnicity, smoking, a history of incontinence, increasing body mass index, damage from prostate surgery, pregnancy, vaginal birth and overactive bladder syndrome. The compensatory mechanisms was brought on by diseases such as diabetes mellitus, impaired physical function and cognitive impairment. An association between depression and UI was reported, although it remains unclear whether there is a causal relationship between the two symptoms, or if they stem from separate causes (Giraldo‐Rodríguez et al., 2019). Increasing age was a well-recognized risk factor for UI in many population-based studies. The strong association with age and UI was not a normal part of aging and should never be solely attributed to it (Vaughn &Markland, 2020).

Social Movements are only as important as the person leading them. The person(s) leading a social movement must have charisma and be able to captivate an audience. Political scientists and historians are taught to analyze body language, especially during debates and speeches.

For this assignment, you will watch Dr Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream (Links to an external site.) speech and a speech by Alicia Garza of the Black Lives Matter movement (Links to an external site.) and answer questions listed below. Pay special attention to the following aspects in the two speeches.

  • Importance of body language while delivering the speech.
  • Gestures, cadence and delivery style.

Answer the following

  1. Provide a summary of the two speeches.
  2. Compare Dr. King’s leadership, charisma, power and passion to capture his audience to Alicia Garza’s speech. What are the similarities, if any? What are the differences, if any?
  3. How does the location of the speeches support their messaging? Dr. King’s speech was held in a church and at the Lincoln Memorial, whereas today we have social networking and more avenues to relay messages. Does messaging make a difference?
  4. Describe how the audience in Dr. King’s speeches relate to the Alicia Garza’s audience. Do you see a similarity or differences in the speeches and in the audience?

Outline Assessment Starting a new business with at-risk personal assets

Instructions

Complete an outline for the academic paper that is the final written assignment due in Week 7. The outline body must have the following sections:

  1. A definition of good decision making (based on a synthesis of research you conducted on published experts in decision making)
  2. One example of an important decision you made in the past, if that decision ended up being good or bad and your analysis of why it ended up that way.
  3. Based on a synthesis of research you will conduct, what are the things that one should consider before making a decision about the same important thing you did.

Remember – This is an outline of a report you will create in the future.  The outline should tell the reader what information each section of the research paper will contain. Here is a partial list of important decisions that students have written about in the past.  You may choose one of these or write about some other important decision you have made in your life.

  • Deciding to have or adopt a child
  • Moving to accept a new position
  • Making a mid-life career change
  • Deciding to quit your job without another job prospect
  • Starting a new business with at-risk personal assets
  • Deciding to declare bankruptcy
  • Deciding to seek a divorce
  • Deciding to marry
  • Expatriation to a foreign country as a permanent resident

Note: All assignments submitted to Herzing University should be in APA format. The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) can be used to answer many of your formatting questions. The OWL information on completing an outline can be found here:

Assignment Objective

  • This assignment will give you an opportunity to complete the outline as part of creating an academic paper.

Assignment Purpose

  • Demonstrate the process of creating an outline prior to creating a draft of an academic paper.
