 Personality is the dynamic structure of the psychophysical processes within an individual that define his traits, conduct, and cognition. It is the qualities or combination of characteristics that distinguishes a person. (Cervone & Pervin, 2019) Freddie Highmore from the show The Good Doctor is the character I selected. I have been a fan of Freddie Highmore since the Bates Motel series.

Alfred Thomas Highmore was born in Camden Town, London, England, to talent agent Sue (Latimer) and actor Edward Thomas Highmore (IMDB,2021). He went to Highgate School and then graduated from Cambridge University’s Emmanuel College with a double first degree in Spanish and Arabic (IMDB,2021). In the television program Good Doctor, Highmore portrays a character with Autism that works as a surgeon. At first the hospital was skeptical of hiring him because of his autism. But Shawn Murphy has proven them wrong and has completed multiple successful surgeries. Autism is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder with strong genetic liability (Geschwind, 2009). It is not a unitary entity but a clinical syndrome, with variable deficits in social behavior and language, restrictive interests, and repetitive behaviors (Geschwind, 2009). Recent advances in the genetics of autism emphasize its etiological heterogeneity, with each genetic susceptibility locus accounting for only a small fraction of cases or having a small effect (Geschwind, 2009).

Freddie Highmore exhibits the humanistic perspective of personality. The humanistic perspective focuses on psychological growth, free will, and personal awareness (Cervone &Pervin,2019). It takes a more positive outlook on human nature and is centered on how each person can achieve their individual potential (Cervone &Pervin,2019. Patience, being in his own comfort zone, and believing in perfection are some of Freddie Highmore’s personality qualities. Highmore is such an encouragement to those who want to achieve great things. He carries himself in such a way that he is a wonderful example of an actor who still maintains his roots in his hometown. Highmore returns home frequently to see his family. Highmore continues to attend family gatherings. He emphasizes how down to earth, and family oriented he is in his interviews. He makes clear and concise comments, and he is open-minded. He will be very direct, forthright, and honest in his interviews and on talk programs. We can sense his genuine admiration for her family.

The goal of this essay is twofold:
First, you should do your best to demonstrate traditional essay writing while applying the suggestions from the article. Secondly, in addition to demonstrating traditional essay format, I would like you to learn about the College, specifically what resources are available that help ensure student success. To develop this essay, you will need to go on a scavenger hunt of sorts.

Look over the College’s portal, click around, and make note of what resources are provided. These can be academic (like tutoring), cultural (like a lecture series), or even community (like a foodbank).
After you identify these resources, you’ll need to explain how they will help a student be successful.

A rarely thought of, yet, fundamental key to a college student’s success is being intentional with relationships. College can be a vulnerable time for incoming freshmen. Even before classes start, new college students have to endure many sudden life changes. Transitioning from high school to college, leaving home, and financial pressure, can leave students rattled and stressed by the time the school year begins. Because of this, the people new students surround themselves with is vital to their success. There is a social phenomenon called “homophily” that is defined as the tendency for people to begin to act similar to those close to them. This can be seen in relationships between friends, classmates, siblings, and parents. If college freshmen surround themselves with the stereotypical “rough crowd” – known for skipping class and getting bad grades – under the doctrine of homophily, they are likely to pick up those negative traits. Thus, said students are likely to regularly skip class and do poorly – even in subjects they’d usually excel in. Because of this, college freshmen should be intentional with their friendships, surrounding themselves with people who will support and uplift them. Choosing positive relationships to pursue is essential to college success – seeing as most of the friends made during the freshmen year, remain that person’s friend for the duration of the student’s college time.
Not only should students make friends with peers, but freshmen should become acquainted with their professors as well. While it may seem intimidating, interacting with professors can be an enormous help for students. Professors often welcome any questions and concerns students may have for them. Presenting these concerns may be difficult for a student in a large college. However, in smaller colleges or community colleges like Montgomery County Community College (MCCC), this professor-student interaction is far easier to achieve. Nevertheless, no matter the college size, students should familiarize themselves with at least one professor each semester, who can act as a mentor and guide.
Another key to success in college is to actively utilize any and all resources provided. A valuable skill for incoming freshmen to possess is the ability to put oneself out there and build relationships. However, students should be able to hone that skill to obtain the resources and help they may need. Montgomery County Community College has many vital resources for incoming freshmen. The school offers free tutoring in nearly every subject, counseling, a full, online and on-campus library, and has many useful links on its website – like the link to MyCareerPlan, a quiz that places students into suitable fields of study. When enrolled, MCCC also assigns an advisor to every student. Meetings with these advisors can easily be arranged through the Starfish link on the school’s virtual learning system, Blackboard. However, while the school may offer many useful resources, freshmen need to be independent enough to seek out these opportunities. Therefore, to ensure success, new college students should build relationships with their advisor, actively access the provided resources, and even schedule sessions with a tutor or counselor.
Finally, the best advice for incoming freshmen is to listen and heed the advice they are given. Every new high school or college student receives the lectures about time management, note taking, procrastination, balancing work and play, the list goes on. More than half the time, students brush off that advice and continue to do what they deem best. However, new students should accept advice from peers, instructors, and college resources. At MCC, the school offers a multitude of outreach and assistance programs for college-bound high schoolers and college freshmen. Such programs include Gateway to College and TRIO Upward Bound for high schoolers, and ACT 101 Scholars and KEYS for college students. Information and applications for these programs can be accessed under “Outreach and Assistance Programs” in the Student Success Center tab of the MCCC website. These programs offer students assistance and advice, learning opportunities, and support. MCCC freshmen can also receive advising and mentoring from their assigned advisors. However, in order for this assistance to be helpful, students must actually listen and heed the advice they’re given. Brushing off the advice defeats the purpose of seeking assistance in the first place. Naturally, not everyone will find every piece of advice helpful, but new college students should put effort into following given advice in order to see what methods for them. Incoming college freshmen will quickly realize that their successful techniques from high school don’t often help the same in college. Thus, students should pay close attention to the advice college advisors and programs give them.

Use Matlab to solve the system of equations (alternatively, you can use Ms Excel, if have difficulties in Matlab). 3) Model the problem in Plaxis 2D, using the “Embedded Beam Row” element for your

monopile. Regarding the soil material models, you can use linear Mohr-Coulomb or non

linear hardening model for the sand and linear Mohr-Coulomb or non-linear soft-soil

model for the clay. You are strongly encouraged to do both and compare the differences.

4) Compare also with your elastic analysis in question (2). Now consider an alternative foundation, with a 3-by-3 pile group (9 piles overall) connected to a stiff pile cap. You need to design again the pile group (diameter, length and spacing between the piles). To estimate the efficiency ratio of the pile group, you can apply the elastic interaction factors method.

5) Last step, model your pile group in Plaxis 2D, using “Embedded Beam Row” elements for the piles and a beam element for the pile cap. In this analysis you can use only one of the soil model combinations (in you have created both a linear and a non-linear set). Apply the loads in a sequence: first the vertical force, then the horizontal and the bending moment, and compare the effect on the results. Comment on the pile group interaction effects.

Case Study 14.1—New Jersey Kills Hudson River Tunnel Project

This case illustrates the challenges in making an early termination decision.  Often, particularly in the case of public projects, there is a real difficulty in stopping a project once it has gotten “on the books.”  As a result, projects with huge cost overruns, like Boston’s “Big Dig” are allowed to continue almost indefinitely.  New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made a tough call in deciding to cancel the Hudson River Tunnel project because he was given a number of rosy projections that did not match the actual costs incurred to that date.  This is a great case to let students pick sides: should Christie have cancelled the project or not? There are arguments to be made that the need was strong (although others could argue that the need was over-sold).  On the other hand, the history of the project to date and the uncertainty about future federal funding made it a real gamble, especially during a time of economic recession.

Questions

  1. How would you respond to the argument that it is impossible to judge how successful a project like this one would have been unless you actually do it?
  2. Take a position, either pro or con, on Christie’s decision to kill the ARC. Develop arguments to support your point of view.

The first part of this module week’s assignment is to choose and research a turbine-powered (i.e., jet-type) aircraft. Elevated blood glucose levels cause the water balance in the eyes to fluctuate which can cause blurred vision (McCance & Huether, 2019). 

2.  Are there correlations between his abnormal blood chemistries and his other symptoms? 

There are correlations between J.R.’s abnormal blood chemistries and his other symptoms. J.R.’s lab results meet diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus (DM). One diagnostic criterion for DM J.R. met was that he was a patient with classic symptoms of hyperglycemia and a random plasma glucose greater than 200mg/dL (McCance & Huether, 2019). J.R.’s random glucose test resulted with a blood glucose of 350 mg/dl and his admission non-fasting serum glucose was 268 mg/dl, which are both above the normal values for blood glucose. The second diagnostic criteria for DM that J.R. met was that his glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level was greater than 6.5%, at 9.6% (McCance & Huether, 2019). The diagnostic criteria for DM that J.R. met reflect his other symptoms. Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision are all symptoms of DM (McCance & Huether, 2019). Water is osmotically attracted from body cells due to elevated blood glucose levels, which results in intracellular dehydration and hypothalamic stimulation of thirst, resulting in polydipsia (McCance & Huether, 2019). When someone has hyperglycemia, it acts as an osmotic diuretic in the body (McCance & Huether, 2019). The amount of glucose that is filtered by the glomeruli of the kidneys exceeds the amount that can be reabsorbed by the renal tubules, which results in glycosuria accompanied by large amounts of water lost in the urine, causing polyuria (McCance & Huether, 2019).  The effects of insulin deficiency lead to the fluid is lost in osmotic diuresis and the loss of body tissue as proteins and fat are utilized for energy, resulting in weight loss (McCance & Huether, 2019). Cellular starvation and a corresponding increase in hunger, also known as polyphagia, results from the depletion of cellular stores of carbohydrates, fats, and protein (McCance & Huether, 2019). Sleep loss from severe nocturia can contribute to fatigue as well as the metabolic changes that result in poor use of food products. The effects of insulin deficiency lead to the fluid is lost in osmotic diuresis and the loss of body tissue as proteins and fat are utilized for energy, resulting in weight loss (McCance & Huether, 2019). 

3. Identify the cardiovascular and microvascular risk factors in the history, physical examination, and laboratory data in this patient. 

Microvascular complications of diabetes depend on both the severity and duration of hyperglycemia (Fowler, 2008). Diabetic retinopathy may be the most common microvascular complication of diabetes (Fowler, 2008). In patients with type 2 D.M., the development of diabetic retinopathy may begin to develop as early as seven years before the diagnosis of diabetes (Fowler, 2008). J.R. has complaints of blurred vision that is more than likely due to his high blood glucose levels from the lab values. Additional microvascular complications that can exist are diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy (Fowler, 2008). J.R. does not complain of signs of neuropathy at this time, but this is common and may come in the future. To determine diabetic nephropathy in J.R., we would need additional lab results. Individuals with diabetes pose a cardiovascular risk factor and are twice as likely to have heart disease or a stroke, especially at a young age (McCance & Huether, 2019). Over time, hyperglycemia can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart; therefore, individuals with diabetes are more likely to have other conditions that increase the risk for heart disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). J.R. does exhibit cardiovascular risk factors, specifically obesity (CDC, 2021).
