Finance and Accounting

Candidates must answer any TWO (2) questions. All questions are equally weighted.

1.  In ‘Managing 21st Century Political Risk’ (HBR, 2018), Rice and Zegart argue that for companies, 21st century political risk is essentially the probability that a political action will significantly affect their business—whether positively or negatively. Assess political risk in explaining how to tackle it in emerging markets.

2.  In ‘New business models in emerging markets’ (HBR, 2011), Eyring et al argue that ‘targeting the middle market can be lucrative’. Assess their new business models and the management challenges confronted by MNCs in emerging markets.

3.  In ‘The role of the EU in shaping FDI flows to East Central Europe (ECE)’ (Journal of Common Market Studies, 2014), Medve-Balint argues that the EU has actively shaped foreign capital flows to the region. Assess the locational advantages of ECE in explaining the dynamic interaction of EU’s approach to FDI and ECE’s response to it.

4.  In ‘The rise of middle kingdoms: emerging economies in global trade’ (Journal of Economic Perspectives, 2012), Hanson argues that specialization serves as a vehicle for middle income nations to transform the global economy. Assess specialization in relation to comparative advantage and the new trade theory/strategic trade policy.

Transactional, Charismatic, and Transformational Approaches to Leadership

Dr. Wassmiah is a leader in a local hospital and works well in the environment. The hospital’s environment is characterized by well-defined individual roles where each employee knows what is expected of him or her. Employee conflicts are minimized as everyone understands his or her responsibility, and the coordination of all activities leads to goal attainment. There is no duplication of work. Dr. Wassmiah encourages people to perform well and rewards positive behavior to boost productivity. Most goals Dr. Wassmiah sets are short-term, making them easier to fulfill, less intimidating to achieve, and as a result, employees are interested in obtaining the various rewards. When a problem arises, Dr. Wassmiah directs the employees in what to do and is quick to point out if the employee does not deliver results. However, Dr. Wassmiah suspects that employees are not working when there is no supervision.

What style of leadership is most likely described in this case and why have you reached that conclusion? What are the advantages of this type of leadership and what examples from the case support your position? What are the disadvantages of this type of leadership and what examples from the case support your position? What are the implications for employee motivation with this type of leadership? What other styles of leadership might be complementary to that described in the case and why?

Directions:

  • Write an essay that includes an introduction paragraph, the essay’s body, and a conclusion paragraph to address the assignment’s guide questions. Do not address the questions using a question-and-answer format.

Your well-written paper should meet the following requirements:

Managerial Decision Making – Case Study 1

“Commercial Space Travel” on page 16.

On October 4, 2004, at nearly 400,000 feet (70 miles)above the Mojave Desert, history and $10 million dollars were made. SpaceShipOne had completed its third required flight to claim the $10 million X Prize. The Ansari X Prize was created to jump-start interest in commercial space travel and was similar to the hundreds of aviation incentive prizes created in the early 20thcentury to help develop today’s $300 billion commercial aviation industry. The X prize achieved its goal with 26teams from seven countries spending over $100 million to make commercial space travel a future reality. Onceinconceivable for non-governmental agencies, there are now several for-profit companies looking to enter the space-travel market. Sir Richard Branson created a new company, Virgin Galactic, and has ordered five spaceships from the creators of SpaceShipOne.Branson’s ships will be larger, holding five passengers and one pilot. Virgin Galactic has already had 5,000people make serious inquiries about tickets, which are currently running at $190,000 apiece. Another company, Space Adventures, is selling space-travel tickets for less than $100,000 and has advanced deposits of $10,000 from 100 customers. Not only didSpaceShipOne make history in being the first non-governmental group to launch people into space, but it may also have made history by launching a new industry. Only time will tell!

Questions 1. Clearly, there are potentially great risks associated with being blasted into space and then gliding back to earth. Many systems must work almost flawlessly for day-in and day-out space travel. This is rocket science after all. From your perspective, would you be an early adopter and want to be one of the first to fly into space? Or would you wait until the industry was more mature? What factors would you include when thinking about commercial space travel?

Questions 2. The economics of space travel raises some interesting questions. These space-travel entrepreneurs believe that they can control costs better than governmental organizations. By being smaller and leaner, they can react quickly to changes in the marketplace. PeterDiamandis, the organizer of the X Prize, summed up this sentiment by stating that these entrepreneurs were the“furry mammal(s)among the dinosaurs of the aerospace industry.”Do you agree with this thinking, or do you believe that for-profit companies might cut corners to keep costs down and thereby be riskier?

Note:
1. Your Case Study should be 2 – 3 pages in length and written in APA style format.
2. Separate title and reference page (minimum of 2 references)
3. Double spaced with 12-point Times Roman font.

Evaluate a Source

***I HAVE UPLOADED THE SAMPLE ESSAY THEY PROVIDED. ALL FORMATTING SHOULD MATCH THE UPLOADED ESSAY.***

ASSIGNMENT: For this essay, you will select one of the sources you have found through your preliminary research about your research topic. Which source you choose is up to you; however, it should be substantial enough that you will be able to talk about it at length, and intricate enough that it will keep you (and your reader) interested.

In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the Touchstone.

The introduction of this paper will involve introducing the source: Provide the author, the title, and the context (where you found the source, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.)

You will then go on to evaluate the source on two levels:

  1. Credibility: Using the information in this unit as a guide, evaluate the source’s authenticity and reliability. Look at all the information that you can find about the source to establish the author’s (or sponsor’s) trustworthiness.
  2. Usefulness: Using a combination of summary and analysis, examine the source on a critical level. Determine what the source’s purpose (thesis) is, and how it arrives at that goal. Examine its value to you and the project you are working on. How will it help you prove your own points? How might it come in handy to back up a claim (or address a counter-claim)?

Finally, you will include a conclusion which shows your final assessments on both counts.

Refer to the list below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.

1. Source Identification

The introduction of this paper will be introducing the source:

❒ Have you provided the author’s name?❒ Have you provided the source title?❒ Have you provided the context (where you found the source, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.)?

2. Source Evaluation

❒ Have you provided a judgment on the source’s credibility?❒ Have you used specific examples from the source to illustrate your judgment on credibility?❒ Have you provided a judgment on the source’s usefulness?❒ Have you used specific examples from the source to illustrate your judgment on usefulness?

3. Reflection

❒ Have you answered all reflection questions thoughtfully and included insights, observations, and/or examples in all responses?
❒ Are your answers included on a separate page below the main assignment?

B. Reflection Questions

DIRECTIONS: Below your assignment, include answers to all of the following reflection questions.

  1. What types of questions did you ask yourself when evaluating the credibility and usefulness of your source? (2-3 sentences)
  2. How do you feel this evaluation practice will help you as you continue to move through the research process? (2-3 sentences)

D. Requirements

The following requirements must be met for your submission to be graded:

  • Composition must be 2-3 pages (approximately 500-750 words).
  • Double-space the composition and use one-inch margins.
  • Use a readable 12-point font.
  • All writing must be appropriate for an academic context.
  • Composition must be original and written for this assignment.
  • Plagiarism of any kind is strictly prohibited.
  • Submission must include your name, the name of the course, the date, and the title of your composition.
  • Include all of the assignment components in a single file.
    • Acceptable file formats include .doc and .docx.

Discuss the ways in which a nurse demonstrates cultural competency in nursing practice.

  Topic 4 DQ 1

In the field of nursing there are many things the nurse needs to be good at. We need to be good at listening, assessing, treating, and many other things. Today there are so many different cultures that nurses meet. To provide the best care for the patient the nurse needs to be culturally competent and be able to gain the cultural information from the patients. To gather that information, the nurse can do several things. They can ask the patient verbally or by a written questioner. The nurse can also observe the patient and pick up on their culture. asking the patient to get the information can sometimes be difficult but I think it is the best way. The nurse needs to ask questions in a non-judgmental way.

When a nurse is culturally competent they give better care. They can know what the culture wants and allows during care. Some cultures the husband makes all the decisions, some cultures do not allow a male doctor or nurse around a female patient. In my field certain cultures do not believe in pain management and some believe in a LOTUS birth. When the nurse knows the different cultural beliefs, they can give much better patient centered care. Allowing the patient to practice their beliefs if they are safe shows cultural competency on the nurse’s part. Not trying to force the patient to do something that they do not believe in, for example pushing the pain medication on the patient that does not believe in it. Being culturally competent is very important so there needs to be training to become culturally competent (Cuevas, O’Brien, Saha, 2017)

What is the main issue for your organization in addressing a solution to evidence-based nursing practice? Discuss what might be the first step in addressing and resolving this issue.

Evidence-based practice (EBP), a problem-solving approach to patient care based on the best available and reliable evidence, improves care quality, lowers costs, and allows nurses and other health professionals to grow personally and professionally.Person as well as organizational barriers to EBP implementation exist. EBP is a consistency of nursing practice. The main issue my organization in addressing related to evidence-based nursing practice is the fact that many nurses hardly want a cahnge in the way they work and handle patient care.

As a result, familiarity with EBP is advised. One of the most significant obstacles to EBP adoption is a lack of awareness about how to use evidence-based practices(Wallis,2012). Some nurses have been shown to lack the skills necessary to incorporate research results into their practices. According to the findings of the study, there is little evidence that most nurses, especially inexperienced nurses, have knowledge of how to incorporate EBP in their practice. We need to include EBP concepts in entry-level education to encourage critical thinking, inspire potential research interest, and further develop the available body of knowledge in our increasing clinical practice (Manspeaker & Van, 2011). Today’s students are tomorrow’s clinicians; we need to include EBP concepts in entry-level education to promote critical thinking, inspire potential research interest, and further develop the available body of knowledge in our growing clinical practice (Manspeaker & Van, 2011).

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in nursing involves the application of knowledge obtained from various credible sources after critically evaluating the information and then using it to make informed decision on the most effective intervention to use to enhance patients’ outcomes (Goodman, 2013). For this reason, Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is regarded as the golden standard for delivering competent and patient centered care to clients. Despite its benefits adoption of Evidence-Based Practice in healthcare system remains low. In the facility that I work, the main issue that emerged in the process of addressing a solution to Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) was resistance to change. Notably, many of the nurses and even some of the organizational leaders had issues with incorporating Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) to different operations in the facility. In their view, things had always been done in a certain way and given that they were working, there was no need to make a change (Mahmoud & Abdelrasol, 2019). Additionally, addressing a solution to Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) meant that there would be a change in the organizational culture at the facility. That was met with a lot of resistance due to the fear of the unknown, for example, how would the patients react to the change? In addition to that, there were concerns about an increase in workload for the healthcare professionals at the facility. That is because they had to research the evidence, appraise it, and finally proceed with the implementation. All that made nurses and other professionals resist the process of addressing a solution to Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).

Given that, the first step to solving the problem mentioned above is through stakeholder engagement. It will mean having meetings with nurses and other professionals addressing their fears about the use of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). That will create trust, and hence the nurses will be more receptive to the use of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). Additionally, it will help in collecting the views of nurses about Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and incorporating them in the process of implementation. That will make Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) have the capability to address the unique problems at the facility. After getting the buy-in from the nurses, then it will be easier to proceed with the process of addressing a solution to Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).
