This assignment asks you to really think about why you are passionate about the career you want to pursue or the major you are in

Many of you have career plans that will necessitate advanced degrees and/or education beyond your B.A. or B.S. This means that at some point you will need to write a statement of purpose or personal statement. Admission to a graduate program of any kind is highly competitive–and is not based solely on G.P.A. When I applied to my Ph.D. program, almost 500 others did too, and we competed for 12 spots! Your application will include many things: transcripts, GRE/MCAT/other exam scores, letters of recommendation. The ONE part of your application that tells an admissions committee (and these are professors in the field) why you should be admitted is your statement of purpose.  In it, you need to address a number of things in a very limited space: what prompted your interest, what are your qualifications, how do you see yourself contributing to the graduate program and to the profession, why that specific program.

Even if you do not plan to go beyond your undergraduate degree, this is an opportunity for you to explore your career interest or, if you are still undecided, possible career interests.

I’ve served on numerous admissions committees and helped dozens of students over the years get into med school, dental school, PT programs, various Ph.D. programs, law school, etc. This assignment asks you to really think about why you are passionate about the career you want to pursue or the major you are in.

As with assignment two, you must meet the expectations of a specific audience–in this case, an admissions committee. As such, do some research. If you are interested in specific programs (say, UCLA med school), you should follow their requirements.

As I said, if you do not have specific goals, use this opportunity to think hard about what you like about your major and the classes you have taken or look forward to taking. Take a look at your major department’s web site. Look at course descriptions. Especially look at your professors’ bios and cvs. What kinds of research interest them. What have they published. Read some of their articles. Most of you are transfer students, so this is a great opportunity for you to get to know the professors and the work they do.

This pdf contains some information about personal statements that I found on the Ohio State University website. It also include a sample statement that my niece, Kate, wrote. Kate has kindly given permission for me to do so. She went to Minnesota, not Ohio State, but you will notice that her statement includes much of what the OSU handouts suggest. Kate probably wrote more than 50 drafts of her statement before sending it with her application to Minnesota’s Ph.D. program in mathematics. Note the order and type of details she includes–typical for any kind of program. The one thing I do not like about her statement is the mention of the boyfriend. Someone on an application committee could read this two ways: 1.) that she is would be committed to Minnesota and not to another university, and this is good OR 2.) that the ONLY reason she wants to come to Minnesota is that her boyfriend is there, and this isn’t in her favor as far as an admissions committee is concerned. Leave such personal info out. As far as length goes: Kate’s is about right. You don’t want yours to be longer than hers, but not much shorter either.

One of the major flaws in most people’s writing is wordiness. For this assignment, especially, every word, every phrase, every paragraph, must contribute to your purpose.

Option #1: Building a Diversity and Inclusion Program

organizations  must begin a diversity journey by understanding the current talent in their workforce, including breakdowns by gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, and more.  Just having diversity is not enough. To reap the benefits from increased diversity, organizations need to work toward inclusion.Leaders looking to increase diversity in their organizations are often asked to “make the case” for why it is necessary. During this course, it has been highlighted that diversity and inclusion in the workplace can lead to increased revenue, reduced costs, more significant innovation, and increased employee engagement, productivity, and commitment.

The first step for senior leaders interested in building a diversity and inclusion program is to create a specific business case on how diversity, inclusion, acceptance, and belonging will improve the organization. Write a business case for your organization.  Include both internal and external subject matter.

Internal topics should address the following:

  • Recruiting
  • Hiring
  • Promoting
  • Recognition
  • Employee Benefits

Internal topics should address the following:

  • Customers
  • Vendors
  • Business partners

6-3 Assignment: 24-month Pro Forma

Overview

Creativity and diversity can lead to outcomes that both maximize profit and enhance social well-being. Business leaders use measurable factors to help determine design and development decisions, “go” or “no-go” milestones, financial models, and many “what if” scenarios. In this process, the new product or service is considered as part of a system.

Scenario

You rocked your BMC and received a great response from the experienced project manager (PM). As you read the feedback, you realize that it’s now time to develop the financial component. In the comments, the PM also stated that no matter how good an idea is, to senior management, it’s a “no-go” if the new product or service does not produce sales.

In preparation for your funding pitch, which you will submit as your course project in Module Seven, the PM also warns that funding pitches are quick and decisive. Including too much information could overwhelm senior management, cause more questions, and erode the purpose of the funding pitch.

Prompt

The PM’s directive at this point is for you to develop a 24-month pro forma that demonstrates the potential profitability of the new product or service in an income statement. You will use the Module Six Assignment Template linked in the Guidelines for Submission section to complete this assignment.

You may use the current company’s income statement to project what can be added to the company’s profitability. This can be found in the company’s 10-K. Look to other companies in the marketplace with products or services similar to the one you are proposing as a basis for your projections. Additionally, you may use the company’s current year numbers and key assumptions based on your analysis of the market to project into the future. Remember, these numbers are purely speculative.

In the template, you will specifically address the following:

  • Previous fiscal year: Identify historical information for the previous fiscal year.
  • 24-month projections: Speculate projections for 24 months.
  • Explanation of assumptions: Explain how you were able to speculate appropriate assumptions.

Guidelines for Submission

Submit the completed Module Six Assignment Template as a Word document. Sources should be cited according to APA style.

“A” WORK AND PLAGIARISM FREE

Part B: How would a functionalist, conflict theorist, and interactionist explain the government healthcare program discussed in Part A?

Part C: Explain how two or more social structures (statuses, roles, groups, social networks, and/or social institutions) affect one’s access to quality and affordable health care in American Society.

Part D: What are your personal beliefs about the current American healthcare system? In your discussion, explain how at least two groups you belong to (e.g., family, gender, race, class, religion, and politics) influenced the development of your beliefs concerning our current healthcare system.

For this assignment, ensure you follow the requirements below:

1. Answer ALL the questions listed in Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D in your assignment.

2. Please answer the response questions in essay-style format. You will not be rewriting each question and answering it. You will be creating an essay that addresses the response questions.

3. Use sociological terms and concepts from the textbook reading in your essay to demonstrate you understand and can apply the concepts.

4. Cite the textbook or a web source at least once in the essay. APA style in-text citations are required to show how the textbook was used in your essay. An APA style reference list containing the textbook and any other sources you cited in the assignment is also required.

5. The essay should be four pages and should use the following APA style components: APA style title page, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and 12-point font.

Note: The rubric for this assignment contains a task section. Your task score is based on: (a) meeting the page requirement; (b) whether unit terms and concepts are directly identified and specifically labeled; (c) all parts of each question are directly answered and clearly demonstrated; and (d) whether at least one source was cited.

Current Event – Totalitarian Restrictions or Ethnic Conflict

Article (no more than one-month old) from reputable news source such as The New York Times or The Washington Post. Scholarly articles only!

Reviewing the concepts of ethnic conflict and totalitarianism:

Often students are confused on what constitutes an ethnic conflict. Before you select a topic for this assignment, be sure to review the information below to gain a better understanding of what constitutes Totalitarianism and ethnic conflict.

Totalitarianism and ethnic conflict are not the same as violent act committed by a police officer that was officially deemed as being racially motivated. Ethnic conflict is when government has discriminatory policies in place. Slavery and segregation were examples of ethnic conflict. Many students confuse recent events of violence or shooting by police officers on individuals as examples of ethnic conflict. However, not all of those actions were acts of racially motivated violence.  In addition, they were committed by individuals in the execution of their job, which are subject to review and oversight (administrative and legal), and if deemed excessive and/or racially motivated, will be sanctioned and prosecuted because they would go against standing policies and laws that do not allow excessive force in the execution of police duties or racially motivated violence against others (by police or any other person). In the 1960s and earlier, we had state governments requiring African Americans to be segregated. This was an example of ethnic conflict. We do not have government policy in this country today promoting the harassment or killing of people because of their race.

If a person kills another person, it is a legal issue. If the killing took place because of the race of the person, it is also a hate crime. It is not designated as ethnic conflict. Topics centered on racial inequity such as Black Lives Matter, while important and viable topics in the context of race relations and social justice, are not the same as ethnic conflict in Totalitarian regimes and so are not appropriate topics for this assignment.

Instructions

This week can present some definitional difficulties for students, particularly for understanding “restriction on freedoms by a totalitarian state” or “ethnic conflict within a nation”.  Please be sure to read the reading assignments as well as the insert with further explanation in the assignment details.  Additionally, please note there is a difference between Ethnic Conflict and Racism.  Ethnic conflicts often result in all out war or civil war within a nation.

In light of the current events occurring in the nation, regarding both the COVID 19 restrictions and protests for justice, it is important that you are aware that these not examples of restrictions on freedoms by a totalitarian regime or ethnic conflict.

For examples of restrictions on freedoms by a totalitarian state or ethnic conflicts within countries, your search results may be most successful if you search for countries that are totalitarian or that have ongoing ethnic conflict, such as North Korea and Ethiopia respectfully – instead of searching for totalitarianism or ethnic conflict only.

Again, please be sure to read all the assigned readings of the module to help in understanding totalitarian regimes and ethnic conflict/civil war.  A common mistake students have made in the past was misreading ETHNIC CONFLICT as ETHIC CONFLICT, an understandable mistake for students in the medical field yet nonetheless a costly mistake given the assignment.
